    Great for most kayaks, aluminum boats, fiberglass crafts, & more!
    It sticks to just about everything except PP (Polypropylene).
    For really large fiberglass power boats the company makes a different keel guard. These kits shown in video are the ones recommended for small plastic/fiberglass hull kayaks/canoes/& more. However they could be used to patch damaged hull areas in powerboats if needed.
    The same kit can be used for keel guards or for easy kayak repairs. In this video we go over applications for using the product and testing. We chose the largest patch and cut it into strips for creating a keel guard. We could have done nearly 3 kayaks with the one kit. The product is very robust and durable when fully cured. It is a UV Curing Fiberglass Polyester Resin Patch Material. It basically feels like fiberglass after about an hour of sunlight exposure. So apply to areas needing either protection or repair and in a hour you can enjoy the water! I came across this product at iCAST 2017 and requested samples from the company for testing. I had been looking for a product like this since my experience with other keel protectors was unsatisfactory. Other products simply were too thin and quickly were destroyed by oyster/shell rash on beaches. This product is thicker and like fiberglass on boats it can withstand more abuse. Dragging kayak on concrete is still not highly recommended, but even then the Gator Guard product was able to withstand more than competing products in my experience. You can cut strips to fit entire keel using multiple patches but i found that unnecessary. I primarily use keel protectors on bow and stern. I will be putting these on all my kayaks for keel protection.

      Thanks for sharing! Not much sticks to kayaks so this is awesome. Definitely will be ordering some. My keel in the back of my Hobie has taken a beating and needs some protection big time. Keeleazy looks like overpriced crap. This gator guard stuff looks much better.

      Awesome! Thanks for sharing your experience. The Gator Patch is by far the best product I have found for Skid Plates/Keel Protection. Other products I have tried simply don't compare for longevity. The stuff is awesome!

      This same kayak still has the same strips on it and barely worn down. We use them exclusively in saltwater which is typically harsher conditions than fresh. Very happy with the product. They gave them to me for free but at my request after seeing them at iCAST. Knowing what I know now from testing I would buy more in future should I need them. However, they don’t wear very quick so might be a while.

      That is good to know. Reading about a bunch of other products not lasting and applications. This has to be the best product on the market. Which I have been searching for. Small price to pay for a big investment.
      Gotta love youtube!
      Thx again!!

    I was just debating on gluing a thin strip of metal to the keel of my yak since the granite rocks eat kayaks for fun and sport here on my local river. This may be a good alternative and certainly worth keeping with me for emergencies.

    • @KayakDIY
      @KayakDIY  6 лет назад

      We still have the same strips on the kayak. They are holding up well. We drag this kayak and the stern keel has 80%+ thickness left.

    Looks like an awesome product for keel gaurd. I wonder how well it bonds to the plastic. A great test would be to bend the bucket near the patch to see if any part of it will delaminate.

    • @KayakDIY
      @KayakDIY  6 лет назад +1

      +Lowegy I have a lot of faith in it holding during that test. I can try it and test it. Likely won’t do another video showing it. However, I can let you know. I currently still have water in bucket. Doing a longer term study to see if saltwater exposure affects patch adhesive.

    • @Lowegy
      @Lowegy 6 лет назад +1

      KayakDIY let me know the results. Thank you for testing

    • @KayakDIY
      @KayakDIY  6 лет назад +2

      +Lowegy just tested per your recommendation today. I pressed on the bucket around the repaired crack. The patch limited the indentation some due to being more rigid than surrounding plastic. However I was unable to delaminate patch or break the adhesion from simply pressing on bucket around the crack. It has a pretty dang good bond going on. Thanks for the suggestion. That test could resemble hitting a submerged rock near repaired area. Bucket still had water in it too prior to test and no leaks.

    So from what I understand, the only thing holding this stuff to the hull is the 3M adehesive tape. Not so sure I'd trust that in salt water.

      CZ West it peels off but is VERY VERY hard. You can stack another on top as well. This stuff can also be sanded and painted. It is like fiberglass when cured in sunlight for few minutes.

      It still is enough to cure even in overcast days. Just don’t use it right away. Give it a few hours. In florida on overcast day I did some of my rental kayaks. It cured in less than an hour even when not in direct sunlight. I honestly don’t think you need a UV light.

    YOU FIX PLASTIC WITH PLASTIC!
    I barely see any damage on your kayak!
    IF YOU HAVE A KEEL HOLE, Fill it with plastic (both surfaces must be hot) test for leaks then melt in wire mesh and melt plastic over that too...
    DID I MENTION...
    BOTH SURFACES MUST BE HOT!
    NEVERMIND!
    THIS WHOLE VIDEO IS AN AD!

    • @KayakDIY
      @KayakDIY  3 года назад

      Missing point of vid. I use gator guard as a keel protector and as an emergency repair. However, you do you. You seem to be in a friendly mood. 😂
      People not knowing what they are doing can do way more damage trying to melt plastic a doing a plastic weld job. I run a kayak rental business. I know how to do plastic repairs. I also know some people shouldn’t attempt it. I get people trying to transport 70lb kayaks with bungees on roof of their BMW. Those kinds of people should stick with Gator Patch for repairs. In this vid I outline the repair benefits, but primarily an excited for a good keel protector.
