How to Make the Best Keel Guard (KYDEX)

  • I've spent a long time trying different keel guard solutions. Some were too temporary, others too expensive, and some were just not aesthetically pleasing. To keep you from all the trial and error I went through, I put together a step by step video to make your own custom keel guard that will only take a few minutes and won't break the bank. Hope this helps! To secure it to the kayak, I've found Marine Goop works very well. And yes...if you can turn the vessel upside down, that'll work to your advantage. In my case, there was just too much stuff mounted to the top and it was easier just to work on it while on the hoist.

Just made a couple perfect keel guards for my Hobie compasses! Thanks for letting everyone in on this tip!
I used .08 size in grey - there are so many colors available! Being thicker I had to use a rotary tool to cut it into shape and the dremel sanding bit to finish it. Super strong and much better than pvc in terms of durability and scratch resistance. Also doesn’t have those burn marks and can take a lot of heat without damaging it

I just formed one from the thin wall pvc pipe, not near that easy to work with, still turned out pretty good, if I do another I will use the Kydex! Sure would have been easier though with your boat upside down on sawhorses... Thanks again!! W

    Our LL:
    1. We used a Dremel type tool to bevel the ages so there would be less drag, less chance of something like grass catching the edges,
    2. We found Kydex in a black carbon fiber pattern that made the aesthetics more palatable on a black carbon fiber canoe-FYI,
    3. Our application was a carbon/Kevlar (aramid) canoe so we decided to use 2 sided tape, however the tape is too thick; I wish we could find something thinner and water proof. We did not want to use glue due to our concern that we would never be able to replace it given the carbon/Kevlar construction of the canoe.
I sure appreciate the Alan's ingenuity!

I've been searching for something like this for a while. This looks like a really nice solution. How long have you been using it on your Outback? I'm curious how much use you can get out of it. Did you have to rough up the area before you glued it down with marine goop?

    • @kayakangler

It'll last a long time, maybe the life of the yak. You don't need to rough up the area, just clean it.

After a couple decades of wanting to have a fishing kayak, the day has finally come and I want to protect "my precious" as much as possible, lol. However, how much is really needed and where, and how much would make me look like a lunatic, lol? I could cover the entire bottom of the boat with kydex for the ultimate protection, lol.
Do you think you can make a video sharing your thoughts on how much keel/hull protection is really needed, and if there are other areas of the hull which could use a small panel of kydex protection too?

    • @kayakangler

I would never drag my kayaks that far. This is for landing on boat ramps and the incidental dragging that occurs. The marine goop is tenacious but can be sheared off with a putty knife.

@@philipdean5950 from looking online I would choose either kydek T or the boltaron, preferably boltaron. Just from looking on holster forums boltaron is said to be more scratch resistant over time compared to kydek T. I also came across a chart on Google with all the different types of kydek. I'd love to get my hands on kydek 100 but it's expensive and I can only find it 4ft by 8ft sheets online. It's pretty much the stuff hospitals make their room signs out of... Hey Tony, yes it would be way easier if you could turn your kayak up side down. This particular model is a Solo Skiff, which is a bit heavy, but more so, I have so much stuff mounted to the top of the deck that it would have taken me longer to undo all of it than to work on it on the hoist :-) As far as a large sheet, I'm sure it's made, but I've never seen it. That would be pretty nice if you can come across one! Let me know if you do, thanks!
