    well i tell you Patty dahlin, i'm a Creative Designer of bags and accessories and i am dabbling into new things. I just got into working with gussets, adding lining and I created a beach bag using fabric scraps that looks like i used a jelly roll. i just ordered my first jelly roll so i am looking forward to working with it. there are so many wonderful ways of creating fantastic bags and i just love it!

      It’s so much fun to experiment and learn new techniques and bag styles! I have several jelly rolls waiting to be used, I just need the time and the energy to make them into something. 😊

      Thank you! I generally do like to use music and most of my videos will have music in them. I'm not sure why I didn't use any here. Missouri Star ended the commissioned partner program for the rest of the year and gave no indication it would be returning, so I don't think I am a partner any more. I don't do giveaways and they are only working with the people who participated in giveaways during what was apparently a trial program. I"m extremely sad they ended this program so suddenly and I'm taking a break from video and content uploads in general as I take some time to think over what I'm going to do moving forward. But early retirement seems likely. But the bag project is a good one! I'm making a new one for myself now!

    Great video! Patty, in my opinion you are one of the best instructors/ teacher, your voice volume is clear , concise, and same volume\tone all though the video, very calming and encouraging! Picture quality is great, I love the auto focus on your videos. Your step by step approach is awesome. I can see why it takes a long time to shoot and edit the videos, it is so worth he wait on my side. The written instructions are a mirror image of your videos. !!! ❤🥇🥇

      Oh my gosh! Thank you so much!! I generally start with the blog post and get that written and then edit the video. And I do try to make it all cohesive. This project took me 2 full weeks to construct and film and edit and write. There are so many moving parts to even a simple bag project like this one, and figuring out what to keep and what to delete is challenging. I always do my best on whatever I share, and I'm so happy you noticed. Thank you!
      I don't know if I'll do anything else with this much detail for a very long time, or ever, because the views are not there. But I can do abbreviated project videos going forward, and people can refer back to this if they need more detail. Viewers really prefer entertainment to learning at this point on youtube so I need to figure out how to shift what I'm doing on the channel to better address that shift.

    I can't wait to give this bag a try. I like the way you put your squares together where there are no seems to match up. I find that if I use some SF 101 or lightweight interfacing on my lining that it helps prevent it from stretching.

    Patty, I’m so looking forward to making the pouch and then this bag! You’re not zooming through instructions, assuming we all know what’s going on! Thank you for taking the time to create a fun project & video. Excited to start bag making!

      Thank you so much for that feedback Lorrie!! I cut out so much to get this tutorial down to a reasonable length, and I'm glad to hear it doesn't feel that way to you. I'm going to do a couple of shorter videos showing just the easy zipper method and just the boxing of corners and just the strap making. Then you can reference the shorter videos if you need just a part of the process and don't have to wade back through the whole video. The zipper pouch is a really fun little project! Start there for sure. Expect to see another zipper pouch soon to introduce one with boxed corners. I have already made a few of those, and I just love them!

    What a great video! I love how you point out how things get wonky. I have made several bags and pouches and am familiar with the wonkiness. I have the Boxed Bag template by Carolina Moore, and it is great. I don’t have to worry about over cutting my boxed corners. I also use regular 1/8 inch double-sided tape to hold the zippers in place while I sew. This tote would make a great shopping bag. Thank you!

    • @PattymacMakes
      @PattymacMakes  8 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you! Yeah nobody ever shows the wonkiness or tells you about it. I thought it was important to address it. It gets removed in trimming but for so long, I thought I was doing something wrong. I'll check out the template! and I love the tip about the double sided tape! I think of this as more of a handbag than a shopping bag, but for small items, it does work well. I need to do more photos to show me holding it for scale. The weather hasn't been all that cooperative for photos, so I only have the bag itself. But it's good size. My water bottle fits in there.

    • @Sherri_O
      @Sherri_O 7 месяцев назад

      @@PattymacMakes I wondered if I were doing something wrong, too. I still try to make edges meet, so it’s great to see that I don’t have to worry about it. I think this tote would be a good size for errands or those times when you’re just getting a few items. I love that it has the zipper.

    • @PattymacMakes
      @PattymacMakes  7 месяцев назад +1

      @@Sherri_O Yes exactly! It holds more than you think and I will do a demo video to show that.
      It's always better if we have fabrics line up as expected...but with all these layers it's impossible for them to not shift. Applying a lightweight interfacing would help with the migration of the lining, but short of that and/or using a walking foot it's pretty difficult to feed that much through a machine with any migration. It is in in the seam allowance, so it's not a huge deal, and I just trim it away when I cut the zipper tails away. I love my bag so much and I'm excited to make a few more to show them in different fabrics.

  • @wmyoung1000
    @wmyoung1000 2 месяца назад

    thanks for showing that the seams get wonky when making bags, every one makes them look like they always come out perfect. very awesome very honest !!!

      @PattymacMakes  2 месяца назад +1

      You're welcome!! Yeah, nobody ever mentions it, and I think that's a disservice to people trying to learn. The trick is in trimming as evenly as possible and minimizing the migration of the fabric. I have been using this bag as my daily purse for a couple months now and I LOVE IT!! It's beautiful and has been fantastic to use. I hope you'll try making one!

    I make bags and totes all the time. If you don’t mind a suggestion, sew down both sides of your fabric straps for a more finished look next time. Love the fabrics you chose and what a great job!!!

    • @PattymacMakes
      @PattymacMakes  8 месяцев назад +4

      Thanks Darlene!! I considered doing that, but in trying to get the video completed, I went with a quicker version. I'm sewing these things while I'm filming, and I have to work in between people coming over and managing daylight etc. It's very difficult to stop and start constantly and filming one project over several days. I'm planning a short video just talking about straps, so in that version I'll show the double stitching. For this project, I was on such a deadline I had to simply get it done.

    Ive made a couple bags with no zipper but I’ve been wanting to try a zipper. You said put zipper “wrong side” down. I would have thought the side with the pull was considered the “right” side? I’ll be watching your smaller bag video also before starting mine

    • @PattymacMakes
      @PattymacMakes  Месяц назад

      It can be confusing, but when you sew the zipper tape to the fabric, you want the "wrong" side of the zipper facing down so the pull is on the outside of the bag. I hope that helps!!

  • @robinrutherfordcost4748
    @robinrutherfordcost4748 Месяц назад

    Question: if your bag is already sewn, corners boxed with lining tacked down to the boxed corners, and then you decide you want to add a zipper - is there a way?

    • @robinrutherfordcost4748
      @robinrutherfordcost4748 Месяц назад

      Like I usually keep the top of my bags open and the straps get tucked in between the 2 fabrics so I have about 20 bags where all I have to do is sew the tops - using a double needle. There should be a way to attach a zipper at that point, correct?

    • @PattymacMakes
      @PattymacMakes  Месяц назад +1

      I don't really know how you would do it neatly after the fact. I've only put in zippers using this method.
