- In search of the wild Boar of the Forest of dean,. There are approximately 500 boar and recently they have started a culling program to control the Wild Boar of the Forest.
As a result this beautiful animal has become very shy and often difficult to approach and film.
The wild boar in general will do all they can to avoid humans. They can sometimes be inquisitive and in large numbers they can cause quite a lot of damage by uprooting and digging the ground in search of food.
In my opinion they most certain have a place in the Forest of Dean. They have as much right to be there as I do...!
They also taste good!!!! But what a beautiful animal.
Hi Sandy,
Just been watching the boar in the forest of dean on BrianPwiildlife`s channel, Taken on the main before the cull.Amazing how their survival instincts have come into play as they approach people in the videos.Hope you enjoy. Thankyou for your Inspirational works,
Regards Mike Spencer
so nice to look at wild boar in the wild.nice little camp you had there to
Great to see you out and about, a great camp and area, looked like you were in your element :)
Sandy another very good video should have being out tonight in the woods but foul weather predicted has kept me indoors this time, sitting here watching your vid makes us both want to be out thanks for sharing mate better than watching the box :-) more please
Thanks for watching Paul,
Hope you can get out soon.
Sandy
Another First Class video Sandy.
Great to see the two of you complementing one another, sharing and exchanging your different skills and experiences.
Carry on Camping Man!
Noel
Thanks Noel,
I am out again next week with Austin the Scudo camper and John Wellings (The chap who build my first grinder) camping on a site Nr Chedder (not too far from you). Would you like to join us? If not for the camp then maybe for a visit?
Sandy
Wiltshire Man Which days Sandy?
***** Not sure yet Noel, I will let you know when I know more
Wow!
What an amazing video.
The angles, the ambience and the way you captured the moon, the sunrise and the squirrel.
Thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining.
I suppose I think with my stomach because in most vids I just love the food element and cor that pheasant looked handsome, cooked to perfection.
Re the eggs : I keep my own hens too, can't beat a freshly laid home chicken egg. ( recently did an introduction to my hens vid, should you or Dean be interested) and I love his philosophy on keeping them, I'm fairly new to it and have the same thoughts but he put it so eloquently.
I shall remember those words.
Still contemplating an sj400 by the way ;-)
Thanks again Sandy for a wonderful vid, I look forward to the next one.
All the best
Matt.
h wow mate. Absolutely wonderful..... what a great vid! looking forward to the next camp ;-)
Your welcome Sandy, seen some vids on FOD meets and wouldn't mind attending one some time, I do need to get out, but can't leave the wife without a car, the wilderness gathering is about all I get upto nowadays, oh well, regards.
Love your use of the quadcopter. I got one too now, so hopefully I'll be able to do similar things :-)
I reckon when we 'retire' again, (first time was an early bash at it and the better half wasn't ready for it), I might have to add the Forest of Dean to the , 'sell-up and move-to', shortlist of potential relocations. I have seen a few vids of the area now, and it looks welldamned lovely.
really enjoyable vid Sandy.
a.t.b.
If I could afford to retire there I would too.
You have to understand ,Sandy... I would probably be living in a pile of logs or a tent. Many of my retirement plans are very wishful affairs. atb.
I really enjoyed watching this video while sipping my coffee this morning Mr Jack. You have an open invitation to come to the States and go to the Appalachian Mountains with me anytime you would like.
If it was nearer or if I had more money you can bet I would definately be over. Who knows I may bwell be able to at some future time.
Thanks for watching
Sandy
Amazing video mate,I've really enjoyed this one,I Am going to watch it again lol.
Thanks Son, glad you enjoyed it. Speak soon.
Dad
Another great video Sandy, I was watching Bear Grylls survival challenge last night on the tv, I think this is better filmed and narrated, without the silliness of eating live scorpions and drinking urine. well done mate I stand by my comments of as good as David Attenborough. wonder when the adver are going to pick up on you.
The Adver? The Swindon Evening Adertiser! Thats the local rag.
I have to agree about the silly machoness of BG. I do watch him sometimes but I am not influenced much by what I see.
David Attenborough on the other hand is a great source of inspiration
Sandy
Another great wildcamp Sandy, you guys really immersed yourself in your surroundings and I luved Deans philosophy on keeping the hens after they have stopped laying. Many thanks for taking the time to share this ~Peace~
Epic adventure I'm really enjoying your videos. Since you purchased the SJ400 and the quad copter the quality of your videos have skyrocketed (pardon the pun), what is your main camera you use.
All the best
Ranger
All the quad copter footage is shot using the SJ4000 and handhld cameras are Panasonic and Gopro hero4
Very nice video. I like how you put this one together. Better luck capturing footage next time, maybe some fresh bacon?
What brand of quad is that ?
Is it diesel or petrol ?
Hi Ade,
The quad is a Honda Forman 600cc petrol engine. 2 or 4 wheel drive

why do you not bring a tent and real pot holders?
Great edit !!
Thank you for the video !!
Good show Sandy! It looks like I need to step up my video skills. Very impressive work!
Thanks Steve,
You will be pleased to know that my Folding Firebox goes every where with me and is used frequently. I am extremely pleased with it.
Sandy.
Wiltshire Man Thank you Sandy, I'm so glad to hear that you like the Firebox enough to always have around. You made my day for saying so! Cheers, Steve
HI SANDY
looked a great time out - i like Deans ethos on his hens role within the family, very nice.
so many good points on this video - the pheasant looked lovely.
i look forward to out camp this year and seeing you at the july meet (hopefully).
looks like you found where chris caine was living lol.
take care my friend
Haa Yeah Chris Caine would have been happy living there! I will be at the July meet for sure. All the best mate
Sandy
fantastic camp out Sandy. I was lucky enough to spend some time with Dean last weekend, a very knowledgable chap indeed. He took us to his base camp area, and that tree is impressive :) Quad footage is always great ! Hope you are well mate, and I am quietly catching up on missed vids over the last 6 week or so. talk soon, atb Richie.
Another great video Sandy, your filming and editing is really great, the ariel footage really adds to the whole experience. Looks like you had a very nice camp out with Dean and you got to see the wild boar too this time. a.t.b. vee
Hello Sandy,
Lots to enjoy here, aerial camera, quad bike and a true forest. an excellent wild camp scenario :)
Thanks for sharing with us..........Les.
what a beautiful area for a camp. That pheasant realy looked good and the bacon in the morning with eggs you guys ate very well. very nice you were able to catch that boar on film. thanks for sharing all the best John
Great trip. Thanks for sharing.. I'm getting caught up on watching video's..
Really good video Sandy. I'm always impressed by the subject matter you cover on your channel. A really cool camp there. Nice to see the pheasant - we did similar recently whilst on a hike in Wales but no film. It's power meat if you find it! You saw the Boar.....A quick story. I was up near Lydbrook recently and i was told of a group of Boar. I saw them creaped up the bank to get some film but they had gone by the time I got to the top. So good on you for capturing that. Again - wonderful video Sandy. All the best. Mark.
Great trip sandy. I am loving the Deep woods camping vids from the forest of Dean. It is such a beautiful woods! This made me miss my quad, I had to sell it last year :( maybe another one in my future though. Take care -Chris
It felt a bit like an Robin Hood situation to me, what with you cooking that "road kill" pheasant over a campfire...thought they belonged to the gentry or the crown in England -- jk. The copter shots sure add some breathtaking views to your videos. I'm glad you showed how destructive wild boar can be to the landscape. Here in WIsconsin it isn't a question of culling, but eradication of what is considered an invasive species. Hunters can take as many as they can shoot year 'round with the blessings of the Department of Natural Resources. Not easy, however, to get close to them.
Great video, looks like you ate like kings out there. Can I ask, what did you use to take that image of the moon? it was so sharp and detailed. atb Si
Even without sound that was wonderful. The aerial shots are really professional. I'm missing my long walks in the Forrest with the dog. We saw wild boar quite often, along with deer etc. Mind you we once came across a camel which was accompanied by a lama!.....from a local travelling circus. Keep up the great videos. All the best.
James ( stuck in the city ).
Thanks Sandy and Dean for the trip out nothing like being out in nature to reconnect and charge the batteries ♥ Sending Love from Ireland
Great video Sandy...
The scenery in the Forest of Dean is amazing..
the sights and sounds must have been incredible.
Very relaxing to watch too.
All the best..
Mark
loved the beginning of the vid Sandy looked like the start of a professional tv special, good to be able to get that far back in the woods, the quad bikes are amazing in where they will take you, having dodgy knees and back, my forays tend to be only a couple of miles from the landrover, in Canada i used the quad to get me further back into the woods, went miles back had breakfast by a frozen lake etc, was great, and like you say they have so little impact on the ground, it's just idiots racing around tearing up the place that get them a bad name, i use the dutch bivi too, so that was good to see, good vid buddy, see you at the next FOD i hope, cheers Dave, (the one with the black dog haha)
Well done, Sandy! I enjoyed your wild camp. One question - isn't the fire rather close to your tarp? Don't you worry about sparks? Thanks, cheers!
Great stuff Sandy, really liking the views with the airborne camera ;-) Spent loads of times in woodlands, always good to see them from another view angle without risking life climbing tree's lol. Pheasant looked delicious, and like others have said, it's good that Dean keeps his hens when stopped laying, as a Hippy he has my respect. Nature and Animals are not below man, we are just on a different path. I have come across many camps that have been left, they certainly don't follow the "leave no trace" policy....though sometimes it has benefits. All the best Sandy to you and Dean, can't wait for the next video. Best wishes.
Another GREAT video, there Sandy!. I really enjoyed that ,and i feel like i was there ! The cooked pheasant " roadkill" had me salivating! Thanks for the vid.
Hi Sandy
Once again a really enjoyable video😄 Your camp site looked absolutely fantastic and your video footage was again very professional. I only live about 1/2 hr away from the Forest of Dean, but have yet to go there, I've heard it's a fantastic place. If you would like to borrow my Spy Point Stealth cam at any time to get night and day footage of any wild animals let me know it would be my pleasure to let you use it. All the best mate, John
awesome video.....wild boar are almost as common as squirrels here in Florida....good job...!!!
Looks like a amazing woodland Sandy great spot for camp ,the food looked great enjoy your time out !
atb john
I didn't know you could wild camp in the forest of Dean? Did you get permission? Or is it okay to just go there and camp?
I believe Dean has special dispensations to camp in certain areas but like elsewhere in England wild camping is forbidden. If you do wild camp leave no trace applies as in all cases.
A great place to camp Sandy! The quad copter gives an interesting view of things. Nice to see the boar on film, a shame about the SJ400 not picking up anything, but hey ho! Another time perhaps.
Toodle pip,
Al
What a fantastic night out you had, it looks like, and you seemed wonderfully prepared. Still way too cold and too much snow where I am. Lovely video, wonderful looking spot to enjoy the forest. I'm very jealous. Going out with someone else is always good too. You've been getting out a lot lately and I'm enjoying your videos immensely. Thank you.
Nice camp Sandy, echo what you say about being more alert when you are out within nature, I love to just sit and observe, can be most relaxing. Atb mate, Mike.
Really nice video guys :)....Is there a blinking light on the moon at 11.14 in and all the time the moon s filmed??!!.......Greetings from Sweden
Looks like a nice time out Sandy, I heard rumor of a camp in the forest of Fog sometime in the near future.
Hats off to you and Dean, I have to say your camera and editing skills are superb Sandy! Very jealous! All the best
Jamie
Another great video and I also appreciate Dean's comments re the hens. I did not notice any adult beverages being consumed? Looks like the perfect weather for some brandy or bourbon...
Fantastic video Sandy! You better be careful the BBC will want you to run a series for them. Terrific outing, life don't get much better than an adventure like that. As a boy I once camped for three weeks and when we got back home it felt very strange to walk on the even floor of the house. Keep up the good work. Sincerely, Ossie
Of all of your videos, I have to say that this is one of my favorites. The subject matter is wonderful, but it's your videography that keeps be coming back to it.
Hello sandy, I thought you only used a sj4000 sandy, so what was the other cam you were using. the one you just showed us the sj4000 on?. just being inquisitive.
Great trip Sandy. That pheasant really looked tasty. I was so glad your friend was using a Jacklore knife. Thanks for sharing the experience with us.
Brilliant video Sandy. Always like the useful information in your videos. Keep making entertaining videos.
Another great video Sandy the eggs and bacon looked yummey .And a great location for a wild camp .👍👍
The pheasant looked mouth-watering, and followed by that amazing moon shot with all the visible craters, what an incredible camp
john
I do envy you camping in the forest of dean it looked so peaceful. Are the wild boar hunted or are they left alone ?.Another excellent video Sandy.
Great video Sandy look like you had a good time some great footage from the quad copter too,atb John.
Thanks John, I have been messing with the SJ4000 and finally got the white balance settings sorted. I don't want to risk the gopro on the copter
That's the way to live it up guys....brekkie looked lovely too ;) And that pheasant had me drooling
Great video Sandy, thanks for sharing.... Greetings from FSAIOWA
FOD is definitely on my to do list, looks like a great place to chill out and watch(if you can spot)the wild life. Great video, again PEACE :-)
Awesome Sandy! I was waiting for this episode. A lot of fun to watch.... and useful information (home made fungus fire-startler for example). Great discussion / philosophy. Thanks for posting, Ken
Thanks for watching Ken,
This is a proper forest area in the UK and probably one of the most remote wildcamps I have done. A lovely place.
I suppose your getting ready for your trip to Australia soon.
Hope it all goes well Ken. Strong signs of spring here now.
Peace Man
Sandy
Wiltshire Man Yep, I'm getting ready for Australia. Signs of spring in Texas. We're having more rain than usual .... and that's good. Also it the time of year when folks celebrate THE OLD WEST...and there is a re-enactment trail ride into Houston and a large rodeo, with GO WEST celebrations for three weeks. So it was appropriate for me to make a video about American Pioneers and The Code of the West. I it was uploaded to YT two days ago. It focuses on traditional values as they apply to survival. .... research based video that includes a detailed narrative with links to source documents. Take care, Ken
Good to see folk starting fires the traditional way. Too many lazy campers walk in to camp with fire lighters lol. I'm guilty of that at times
Hello sandy , a great video I enjoyed watching ,like the lads said your vids are getting better & better atb Martin
Wonderful video as ever, fantastic location and glad you daw a boar! Thanks forecasting, nick
Fantastic video Sandy really enjoy them all and amazing camera shots of are beautiful green land . Thanks,Andrew.
Great video, thanks for sharing. The sound of the chiffchaff is a sure sign that spring is on it's way.
Fantastic video Sandy. Great footage with the quad copter. Really enjoyed watching mate.
Enjoyed that, the ariel shots really add something. Forest looks great and far enough away from civilisation. When you're not actually wild camping watching vids like this makes a great substitute. A.t.b
Thanks for watching. The location was very remote for the UK
I like how you mix in your quad film with your norm al footage makes there area look even more outstanding
I totally echo the "The Bearded Clam" your videos are getting better, totally engrossing Sandy and i love the way your using the aerial footage. That's what i want to do on some trips ( when i eventually start using it ) use the aerial footage to enhance the wild camp video as opposed to just high wide sweeps.Top stuff !
You can get some really dramatic footage with the copter Eddie. It was quite windy when I flew it but the gimbal managed to take most of the wobble out. Looking forward to seeing your areal videos. Don't store your lipo batteries fully charged. It will kill them. I learned the hard way. Ideally they should be stored half charge.
So relaxing watching your videos. Like being there in person.
Great bush camping sandy. Nice work on the chopper footage too
Nice follow up, enjoyed it immensely. Great aerial footage.
Great video Sandy. Good to hear the Chiffchaff singing in the background, spring is nearly here. Steve.
Spring is springing Steve.
Thanks for watching
Sandy
Hi, What Cameras Do You Guys Have--Use...John
Nice video Sandy I really enjoy your videos mate. I lived in the forest of Dean for a year. It's a beautiful place. I'm back in Swindon now. I believe you and me may drink in the same public house in Swindon. If you ever fancy some company when you go wild camping I would be more than happy to keep you company.
Occasionally frequent the Kingsdown pub but not a big drinker hete. I was born in Swindon but grew up in Watchfield and Shrivenham. Now live near Kingsdown, Stratton st Margeret
Superb footage throughout Sandy, man that pheasant was cooked to perfection, Dean really knows his stuff doesn`t he, you seem to have taken to the sky`s with ease Sandy the ariel footage was great, birds singing just brilliant mate, ATB, G.
Thanks George,
Flying the copter is not too hard once you've had a bit of practice.
Glad you enjoyed the video.
Sandy
Nice 1 Sandy enjoyed that, the pheasant looked tasty, little hint m8, when cooking meat/fish over an open fire cook off to the side, the flames won't cinder it and it cooks a bit quicker, never actually been in the Forest of Dean, looks Beautiful, good to see you out, atb, Paul.
Thanks for the tip Paul. If you get a chance to visit the FOD then just go, you won't regret it
All the best
Sandy
Fantastic outing for sure. I hope you get another chance to do that again soon
Hi Sandy, just to say that we love watching your videos. We can see how close to nature you are and that you enjoy being out in all weathers, doing your campouts and your long distance hikes. Here in sussex on the south downs, we have some great hiking country, and lots of places for stealth camps too. We are lucky to be quite close to places like Cissbury ring and Chanctonbury ring, both iron age hill forts, and many ancient trackways. We also have a long distance walk called the Southdowns Way, and the Monarchs Way, which is the route taken by prince Charles when he made his escape to France from Shoreham. We look forward to watching many more of your exploits, bye for now..from Nighthiker 1&2
+Dave & Annie Wills Thanks Dave and Anne. I hope to be getting out a bit over this coming year. Got lots of plans. The south downs sounds a very interesting place to explore.
All the best
Sandy
Nice one sandy gd to c u out with Dean again atb FP
Great work sandy you lucky bug;;;;;;;;r. Well done my friend. You looked to have had a great experience out there lovely place regards Marty
Thanks Marty, I gave you a mention and showed them boots you gave me
sorry buddy I think pheasant is a delicate meet and that's burnt
What a great experience to be camping out in a woodland of that size, you must have gotten a sense of what it must have been like for ancient people who lived in woodlands like this, the smells and the sounds of the woodland. Those wild boar are very elusive although they have a lot of area to hide in. Quite a privilege to be invited to to camp there Sandy.
Hi Jeff,
Dean and I were talking about how the ancient people thought and lived. Their lives would have been ordered by the seasons and the nature/ wilderness that surrounded them, not like modern ,man who has isolated himself in concrete boxs with artificial light and heat. After you spend some time in this environment you can really feel the "reconnect" to nature strarting to wake up.
Sandy
Wonderful video Sandy. Your production is excellent and incredibly immersive. You do a great job in making the viewer part of the experience. Thanks!
I try my best Steve and with practice I hope I am getting better.
Sandy
Sandy great vid my friend.
As i said to you on our trip, "very few people get an invite to my areas" the reason for this is very few people realise where we fit in nature, and how we must care for her.
Sandy your welcome anytime.
Stay safe myfriend.
Thanks Dean, it was a great camp. Looking forward to more Boar tracking adventures soon.
ATB
Sandy
Really entertaining Sandy.
An interesting camp, that pheasant look scrummy!
As per usual some really good areal footage with the quad copter
As you said in the description what a beautiful animal the wild boar is.
Cheers Roger
The boar is quite a beast and really belongs in deep woodland like this. They are running a culling program as they can be destructive but the belong here for sure.
awesome vid sandy ,thumbs up , all the best kenny
How do you get away with having a camp fire in the FOD?
Thanks guys for taking us with you. Very enjoyable trip, fire cooked fresh meat looked really good. All the best to you both, Ted.
Thanks for watching Ted
Sandy
Excellent video Sandy, You time out looked brilliant from start to finish. Atb Glenn.
Thanks Glenn, it is a beautiful place
The aerial shot of the forest shown just how vast the forest is, like you said it was. Nice one Sandy. ATB2U - Stanley
Hi Stan,
This is one of the largest forested areas in the south of the UK but when compared to some of the forests over your way it pales into insignificance.
Still it is a big forest and a lovely place.
Sandy
G0VQW
another lovely adventure* Thank you :-)
thanks from florida, excellent video
Lovely camp. I could feel the peace. Nick.
Great video as always, that pheasant looked smashing too:-) I must make it my business to visit the Forest of Dean some time!
Thanks Gareth
The pheasant was wonderful.
Thanks for watching
Sandy
Bet you could make a lot of sausages and bacon out of one of those creatures, that's all i think about when i see a pig, ha, ha, thanks Sandy.
It's easy to think about the lovely bacon, but they really are a fantastic creature. I am glad they are here. Lets hope to stay.
Is the wild boar indigenous to that area?
Brilliant video Sandy, and Dean is a great bloke. What a privilege to get deep in the Forest like that, awesome.
Thanks Eny
