    Interesting notes not mentioned: Thompson-Boling Arena was modeled after Rupp Arena when first built. Though, you could hardly tell it was today. Also, Vanderbilt's Memorial Gymnasium reminds you of an opera house in someway? That's because when in opened in the 1950's it was built to be a multi-purpose building! This includes being a concert hall! With renovations and additions, it is not so easy to tell today. Finally, Rupp Arena is the only SEC arena that isn't owned by or even on the college campus itself - it's owned by the City of Lexington.

      Played against Vanderbilt one year at their stadium and that tripped me out. I came to the comments looking to see if anyone else mentioned this. I had a hard time adjusting to it during warmups, felt like I had to pay extra close attention to the floor so I didn’t fall off haha. That being said, I loved it. Such a cool stadium and was a cool experience to be on that court.

    The Pavilion at Ole Miss is quite possibly the biggest possible upgrade in arenas from previous venue to current. The Tad Smith Coliseum (aka the Tad Pad) was a dump. The roof leaked so badly, a game had to be cancelled due to rain on the court. Additionally, during the fundraising for the Pavilion, the power went out after halftime for like a half hour in the Tad Pad. They got a lot of donations for the Pavilion in the following weeks.
    Also, Memorial Gym sucks. Least favorite place I've seen a basketball game.

    While watching this video, I was surprise to learn that my college Northern Kentucky University had play a game with Arkansas. NKU's basketball team the Norse had play a very good game against the Kentucky's Wildcats. While the team led the game for a few seconds, NKU Norse is the type of team not to underestimate. NKU plays in the Horizon League . At first, the Horizon League seems to be a third rank conference to a lot of College Basketball fans. Yet it is one of the few conferences whose champion may spoil a lot powerful college teams' dreams of winning the NCAA Championship.
    Ironic Note I am still a Kentucky Wildcats fan as well as a NKU Norse fan . Despite a large part of its history, the Kentucky Wildcats is still one of the top five college basketball teams in our country.

    Until recently, the Florida Gators and the South Florida Bulls actually played in structurally identical arenas because both universities asked the state government for funding at the same time, so the state commissioned 1 design for both. The renderings for Rupp you showed are a little outdated. Basically what they are doing is a scaled down version of that. They only added chairbacks on the sideline sections in the upper level and they aren't adding any luxury boxes. The clubs they are adding will be under the arena and will mainly be a hang out place before and after the games and won't be tied to arena seats and won't have a view of the court. The whole plan of it was to expand the concourses which will be much bigger now and to expand/renovate the convention center to draw more conventions/events into Lexington. It'll still be really nice though.

    Back in the day before more modern concert venues were built, Coleman Coliseum was the ‘go to’ place for concerts from The Rolling Stones, Allman Brothers, Jimmy Buffet, Elvis, etc; hence the reason for the acoustical tiles. There’s an ongoing debate to either gut Coleman & completely redo a 50+ year old building or build a totally new building.
    Starkville, MS is also known as ‘StarkVegas’. The old Auburn arena went up spectacularly in flames during a televised football game.

    Wait till you discover “Phog” Allen Fieldhouse at the University of Kansas (Big 12). Perhaps the loudest indoor arena in the world, it was built in the early 50’s during war time steel rationing. To finish it, they added weapons storage rooms which technically classified it as an armory (which allowed them to buy steel). Nicknamed “The Phog” (partially due to a student-made banner that says ‘Pay Heed, All Who Enter: Beware of the Phog’ which was permanently hung behind the student section), the Jayhawks rarely lose two home games in a season. The court is named after James Naismith, the inventor of basketball and first coach at Kansas. His original rules for the game are displayed in the adjoining DeBruce Center (which also has a great selection of food vendors that serve as the student athlete dining center). Allen Fieldhouse is the cathedral of college basketball, we KU students/alumni might be a little ultra//self-absorbed, but (rightfully, might I say) we’re very proud of our one-of-a-kind home.

    Mizzou Arena was originally named the Paige Arena, the first name of one of Stan Kronke’s daughters.
    Kronke is the Majority Owner of the L-A Rams, and the husband of a Wal-Mart heiress who donated the bulk of the money to build what is now Mizzou Arena.
    Paige turned out to be a bad girl; she went to USC, paid people to write papers and tests for her, and was stripped of her degree, and her name on the arena.

    Excellent video! Always love your content.
    One interesting note about Thompson-Boling, at the time it was built it was the largest basketball-specific arena in the US, at a tad over 24,000 seats. Renovations back in 2007 (which added luxury suites) knocked it down to the current capacity. The other unusual fact is that, historically, UT's men's basketball program really hasn't been all that impressive, which would beg the question why such a large arena was needed. Many people would answer that by suggesting the arena was actually built with the women's program in mind, which until a recent relative slump, was the best historic program of all and drew (and continues to draw) huge crowds and large tv audiences. Recently the men's team has been relatively better reversing a traditional trend. Also, at least back in my day, if you were a student and arrived before opening (1.5 hours before tip-off) they would let you sit in court-side seats for free. Few people actually knew this but it was a great way to see a game.

    • @donaldthomas7070
      @donaldthomas7070 3 года назад

      @@argentinevol6720, 1 problem with having an arena with a lot of seats is that a lot of the nosebleed seats will have obstructed views of the scoreboards, playing court, etc.-or the action will be so far from the seats that it's hard for fans to be involved in the action or even know what's going on (hence the larger & larger center-hung video boards that are found everywhere). More seats isn't necessarily better.

    If success is cheap, everyone would have been successful, if the road to success was straight many would have been enjoying success long ago. But am sorry, its not! If you are expecting your dreams to come through cheaply, then you need a change of mind. Success is not for people who give up easily, its not for lazy people, its not for people who give excuses. Success comes to people who are dedicated, committed and ready to give their dreams all it takes to be fulfilled. So I ask again, what manner of person are you? Someone who gives up easily? Or someone ready to fight through the bad day to earn the days? Think about it!,

    As a Tennessee fan I love the enterior of Thompson Boling Arena. But the exterior and concourses need a MAJOR upgrade!! Tennessee Basketball is currently one of the best and most stable programs in the country. They need an Arena that represents that. I really like what's happening with Rupp Arena. UT should follow suit.
