Setting up Etsy calculated shipping to avoid overcharges to you or the customer!

- How to set up calculated shipping so that Etsy won't give the customer free priority shipping if you have a free shipping guarantee also set up. This is a problem that comes up a lot because people have their shipping profile on the listing level set up incorrectly, and they think it's Etsy doing something funky when it's really a simple fix.

Great videos! I am just asking because Etsy won't respond to any help requests. Can you do a video on why the calculated shipping option disappeared from the new and old listing forms. There is no option to add it to my shipping profiles anymore. I am in the US and am a Star Seller and verified. Also when I go to a set up a domestic shipping service there are no options given. This is a big problem for many Etsy sellers.
I'm still seeing it as an option so it's probably a glitch. Etsy seems to be messing around with shipping settings in the past week or so, things are weird and seem to be moving around in error.

Hi Kara. I'm still confused about what to put for "Item size (when packed)". I sell vintage items on etsy that vary in size. If, for instance, I'm listing a ceramic vase that is 9"x6"x6" (and weighs 2 lbs), am I suppose to put the actual size of the vase (9"x6"x6"), or the size of the box that I'm using to package the vase (Priority Mail Flat Rate 11"x8"x6")? Please advise :)
That part is for calculating whether you'll need an oversized package, which is more expensive. But if you put the actual box size in, the postage calculators will basically add the box sizes together instead of understanding that you can put two things in one box. I use 6x4x2" boxes, so if I sell three things, it calculates that as 18x12x6 for the shipping box. That's obviously not right, so I put in 1x1x1 and that way it won't add it up. If you never use extra-large boxes I would just put 1x1x1 in and put the weight of the product when it's packed in a box. That way the weight will calculate correctly for multiple items, but the box size won't get multiplied like crazy.

Hi, If I have these shipping settings for all my listings, but then someone chooses a gift box, which then goes to a 16X16 box - how does this work? Can I create a separate mailing category if they choose the gift box route? So confusing. You are such a great help!
You can set up a shipping profile for gift boxes, but you can only put one shipping profile in each listing. If the gift box is a variation in the listing it's going to be hard to set that up. You might be able to do a variation with a different price and cover it that way.
Hi Kara I was wondering what to put for the item weight if I have multiple options that weigh different amounts on the same listing. I'm selling bath salts so the item weights are 5 oz, 16 oz, and 32 oz. would I need to make separate listings for each so the right shipping cost is added or can I do it under the same listing and if so which weight would I use?
You can do it under the same listing, but you can only put one weight in, so you'd have to decide whether you want to do that and eat some of the shipping cost for the higher-weight items or not. That's usually what people do, you can increase the item price a little to offset the lower shipping price you'll be collecting when you send the larger amount.
Etsy keeps changing my shipping settings from my original "free shipping from the UK" to "shipping from United States" and adding a shipping charge to my ads. Does anyone know how to prevent them making these changes on a daily basis?
Ugh, probably not. You would have to get in touch with technical people there, and that's impossible. I would post about it in the technical issues forum in the Etsy forums.
I recently changed all my (wreaths) listings to "free shipping" but it shows on my Shipping as "calculated" in my dashboard. Am I suppose to do each wreath with size and weight even if I on average know the size of the box around 22 x 22 and weighs 5#? I'm allowing some funds to cover shipping but well under $20.
If it's showing up as free shipping that will probably override the calculated shipping setting. You can set up a general shipping profile if you know the size and weight, but you can also just do a free shipping profile and set them all to that, and it shouldn't show up as calculated if you put them in the free shipping profile.

Hi Kara. I have a question. So I’m really new just started this week. I make tiny gnomes that weigh 1.2 oz (I see I should put this weight and not add the box weight which is 4.2 oz along with it) the box measures 8 x 6 x 4.
I will only ship to U.S. so could I bypass Etsy entirely for shipping and give all customers free shipping on all purchases and just build it into the price? My head is really full trying to understand all of this correctly. I think I heard that you have a course? How much is it and how do I find it? Could I ask a lot of questions if purchasing the course? Enjoying your videos!
I would use calculated shipping and put 1.2 ounces in as the weight since you can probably put more than one in a box without increasing the price. My things are 1 ounce each so I put in 1 ounce and 1"x1"x1" for the box size to avoid Etsy adding the box sizes up and making it look like I'm shipping a huge box. 5 things will be 5 ounces, and that's the point at which the price goes up, until then it all gets sent at the 4 ounce rate.
