That reversed guitar is actually the main riff backwards
There are three versions of it.
The E-riff on the low strings.
The riff a third above that
The E-riff an octave above the lower version.

You gotta listen to Devil’s Dance also off of reload, it’s another D standard heavy groove that I think is the most underrated Metallica song.

Best they ever made is subjective but Load/Reload definitely doesn’t deserve the hate it gotten. I’d much rather have the diversity they went though in the 90’s as opposed to getting master of puppets volume 2 and 3

definitely not an easy going song... not a song to fall in love at first sight with... you do have to let it sink into you, there's a deep, heavy dark , dragged, down vibe to it... it´s a real moody song, with really personal lyrics

They HAVE to play it at least once, right? I mean, how can they really retire satisfied if they haven't even played their entire catalogue at least once? Maybe one day, when they're nearing the end of the line, they'll have a batshit insane concert with all the deep cuts, and really blow everybody away.

I was about to buy that exact guitar about 10 years ago when I could actually afford it - same color combo and everything, and I decided on a white Schecter with a floyd rose... Ended up selling it a year later AT A LOSS. One of my biggest regrets in life.
If you haven't already, you need to listen to "Suicide and Redemption" of Death Magnetic. Has hands down my favorite Metallica riff. Also yeah, most of Load and Reload really has to grow on you for a bit

Fixxxer means a lot to die hard like myself because it’s about James opening up about his abuse with his father and not wanting to keep falling down dark paths to falsely heal from the abuse be they self medication and addiction or becoming an abuser himself and it speaks to me a lot

Fixxer, Fuel and Until It Sleeps are my favorite songs of the Load/Reload era, and what you say is true. It takes a few listens to get in the song
dunno I remember early 98 when I bought the album, fixxxer , memory, dance, and carpe diem instantly grew on me, but i was 15 then... still love those songs

I remember back then at 16 years old having gone through a break-up with a girlfriend this song helped me a lot, brings back so many memories.
Like many have pointed out already; this song lyrically goes perfectly well with the sonics and choices of guitar/vocal fx (like the heavy modulation on James voice in the bridge, that clears up powerfully as the bridge ends, with only his voice and no other instrument to back it up), I feel this is a kind of songs that if chopped/paused, it loses much of its impact, similar to many of Tool's songs... They're a full-on experience.
Also, I love the bass play in this song, love the bass line in the bridge!

Nae, sir. THE best.
The juxtaposition between riffage and vocal content makes this song. Sounds funny but put down the guitar and listen to how personal and powerful the lyrics and vocal performance are. You have already figured out most of the guitar parts. It will actually make you FEEL the riffs MORE. Same thing with The Outlaw Torn.
Those two songs are my favorite lyrically. I was way into Load and ReLoad since that’s when I got into them. I love those albums.
Prince Charming next
The song is definitely a grower and not a shower...ha ha. I totally felt the exact same way you did when I first heard it I think it wasn't until maybe 15 years later when I became a different sort of guitar player and I heard it again and felt that I finally understood how truly powerful it is. I saw an interview with James talking about how proud he actually is of that song and I think that kind of helped me take a second look at it
Devil’s dance and prince charming are really good too. Load/reload are too underrated \m/

I kind of wish he would have just listened to the song first and then maybe did another video breaking down the song musically with the guitar and stuff later on. I think that would help get the most out of both, the reaction and the instruction, also he would get more mileage out of the song contentwise without it feeling watered down. As a guitarist who is overwhelmingly inclined toward virtuoso players, I believe that this song is one that warrants more attention to the feelings brought on by the melody and lyrics in a different way than Metallica is known for.

I appreciate the review, but I give it a 8.5. I really like the flow and vocals on the song, my favorite song on Reload. Reminds me a lot of The Outlaw Torn off of Load. I think you will raise your rating after a few more listens. Love your channel!

Well I'm early. What a great song by a great band. If you haven't you should check out Outlaw Torn too. The twin brother ending song to Fixxxer as I call it. Mama Said and Low Man's Lyric could also be considered twin brother songs too in that they're unusual (more country feel, or even folk). Where the Wilds Things Are is also great (has parts written by Jason too); one of my favorite songs too from those 2 albums.

I really like your work and I've got a ton of your videos saved in my guitar techniques playlist but you really need to listen to the music outside of your guitar playing. This song is incredible,
I think part of the attraction this song gets is because it's Outlaw Torn's evil twin, in a way. They both serve the same purpose within each album. Fixxxer kind of reprises at when Outlaw leaves after James' solo. Or at least I imagine that in my mind.
Such an under appriciated song.

The slide was a nice touch! I hope that one day I can figure out songs by ear on the first listen.
For me the hidden jewel in this song are these clean notes beginning of the chorus which then travel through the chorus in the background. Gives a whole new spin to the song.

I also know the feeling of listening to music that you associate with depression. I genuinely can’t listen to certain bands or songs for that reason. Such a weird feeling listening to an awesome song followed by this heart sinking feeling of what it reminds you of.

You have to play the song on your instrument of choice to appreciate it fully. There's something meaty for everyone to do. Lars has those triplet fills, Kirk's slide solo, the tricky-to-play-and-sing-simultaneously verse riff, and Jason holding down the low end while reinforcing the musical idea.
Fixxxer is kind of like Bleeding Me and The Outlaw Torn went on a date, and hit it off immediately.
Good catch on the NIN similarity. The intro actually reminds me a little of the outro to Mr. Self-Destruct.

Fixxxer is a song that has its moments of monotony but that monotony fades away the more you listen to it. Theres little nuances in there that you discover the more you hear it. Then the lyrics. Extremely personal but presented in the way only James Hetfield can by allowing the listener the room to make thier own interpretations.
Reload has a couple of other notable songs but when its bad it is not good. Bad Seed is muh ok I guess, Low Man Lyric is good, so is Where the Wild Things Are, The Memory Remains, but the best song from either Load albums is Fixxxer.
