A disturbing new problem is sweeping American schools: Students are using artificial intelligence to create sexually explicit images of their classmates and then share them without the person depicted even knowing.
Natasha Singer, who covers technology, business and society for The Times, discusses the rise of deepfake nudes and one girl's fight to stop them.
Guest: Natasha Singer (www.nytimes.com/by/natasha-si...) , a reporter covering technology, business and society for The New York Times.
    Background reading:
    • Using artificial intelligence, middle and high school students have fabricated explicit images of female classmates (www.nytimes.com/2024/04/08/te...) and shared the doctored pictures.
    • Spurred by teenage girls, states have moved to ban deepfake nudes (www.nytimes.com/2024/04/22/te...) .

Teachers have been saying phones were bad for kids for at least 10 years and the public didn’t care. Please finally listen to us, these phones are destroying our children

I’m awake now because a mosquito was sucking my toes blood 🩸 until I heard its voice again next to my ear in the darkness. This news is the beginning of what is coming, larger and larger, with AI.

You will NEVER stop this. Send your child to an all girls school. These schools are just too vile to be reformed.

This news broke in 2023 June. This is now being covered by NYTimes nearly one year later. Why’s it taking so long? There should be a form of news that reacts faster than waiting for a full on Daily investigation 🤨

Eventually people will just assume everything is fake and it won’t have the same impact - humans adapt to new technologies

Part of adapting is learning to regulate new tech. These deepfake nude AI tools are ridiculous

So in a era of gender equality, if a girl created a AI photo of a young man in the school, would the reaction be the same?
How about if a boy created a embarrassing photo of another male classmate?
The larger question is, where does this argument end? Does the suspension actually stop this behavior or does it only make it secretive??

    • @Anya33
      @Anya33 Месяц назад +1

I mean sexually explicit pictures and an embarrassing picture are not on the same lvl.

@@Anya33 So because I didn't use the word sexual, your point is any stronger??
My point is, boys would generally shrug off a sexual photo of themselves and not make a legal case of the behavior.
The argument for gender equality isn't one only of perceived benefits, but of negative effects also.

So creating this kind of fake pictures is not a nice move.
But then I was thinking how girls in my class (ok. 40+ years ago, not the same technology) would have reacted. Quite sure there would have been pictures of the boy with a very small mushroom at the special spot.
I guess I will have to discuss with my daughters about this...

Girls aren’t creating deepfakes of boys though… it’s very concerning that boys are creating sexually explicit photos of non consenting CHILDREN

women are not punished for friendzoning men why should men be punished for this?

Because friendzoning males and creating nude images of minor females are not the same. "What's the big deal?" questions reveal the how abusive the ignorance toward women's privacy is.
