Harley Dyna heated grip install, internally wired through the handlebars

  • This is how I installed heated grips on my 2014 Dyna Low Rider and routed the wiring inside the handlebars. Harley's instructions call for zip-tieing the wires outside to the bars, which looks pretty awful.

How do you use any kind of externally wired heated grip for giving throttle if the wires are running on the outside of the bar? Even if it goes with your customization inside the switch housing, doesn't the wire interfere rotational motion? I get the left side, but because the other one rotates it's much more important! Please tell!

LOL, you are funny bruh. The throttle side only has 1 wire. It is connected internally, runs through the bars, and connects to the left side. They made the throttle grip such that when you rotate the grip, the part where the wire is does not rotate. So no rotation of the internal wire. The left side is where there are 2 wires. Since there's no rotation there, it doesn't make a difference if the wire is routed inside or outside of the bars.
I can't believe this video is 4 years old already, dang I feel old!

Nice job, there is only one thing I would do differently and that's because it has nipped me in the but a few times. Even with the shrink fit solder free connections, I have had them corrode. So, I have started either to either direct soldiering my butt connections with shrink tube or, if I have to use the solder free connections I put a little bit of dielectric grease into each end before I seal them by shrinking. Just saying my friend.

That is excellent. I've never liked the crimp connections myself. Fortunately that wiring is easy to get to and I may go back and do that.

Setting number one not hot. Setting 3 will heat up through big gloves on cold day. Normally I run setting 2 on my factory heater grips and there is just enough warmth. My electra glide is the first bike I ever had with heated grips and now I am spoiled

I went out for 50 miles to test it today. I had a thick pair of gloves with thinsulate in them. It was around 45. I had the heat on 3 and was backing it down in time. I know what you mean about being spoiled. ;^)

Good job working through the issues. For splicing wires maybe next time use the butt connectors that have solder inside. Much more efficient... 😋

Hey Dave, I didn't even know such a thing existed, but I will definitely check those out. I've never liked the old style pressure connectors.

hi real good vid, I have a lowrider just like yours, like the bags you have on , could you give me the harley part number to the bags..thanks

Greg, those were Viking bags which were hands down the worst purchase I ever made for any bike. They are in a landfill somewhere now. The company is horrible and so are there products in my opinion. I would discourage anyone from buying them.
I'm back to using a tailbag on the luggage rack.

@redneckwithajeep5001 I didn't have any issues sliding them on. Double check your part numbers and handle bar diameter.
