Great review, I love your channel! Having been born in '71, I was there for Series 1 of the figures. I never really thought about that until right now. Imagine being a kid in 1986 who is old enough to love GI Joe...no Destro figure, no Baroness figure. A lot of the greats from the comic book and Sunbow cartoon are not on pegs. Hasbro and, more importantly, Larry Hama, created not just a toy line, but an entire universe with such a great history and ongoing story that love for the ARAH brand has lasted decades. You are part of that history now. Anyone today whom has a love for the toy knows about you and a few others. You have rekindled my love for the toy line that Hasbro destroyed with greed and bad case assortment selection. Thank you!
This was sadly on the shelf for a very short time and I recall for years dreaming of the Gold Head version and was so happy when the ebay era came and I was able to get him. I love Iron Grenadiers and thanks for the energy with this one!
Great review of the 1988 Destro and the Despoiler, it's so cool to have a nicely dressed Destro and a very good single person vehicle to go into battle with. I'm getting myself one for my vintage G.I. Joe collection. Thumbs up for the review.
This Destro is awesome I dig his Despoiler as well and I love the artwork for the box..I'd love to have this pic in the form of a poster on my wall...anyway Destros easily one of the best and most classic characters of the line....
When I was a kid my grandmother gave me the version 2 Destro around 1989. Im pretty sure she got it from Goodwill. It was just the figure. He was the only Destro I had as a kid.
Swords are typically carried cross draw style. Meaning they are carried on the weak hand side, e.g. right handed person will carry his sword on the left.
I was gonna say it looks like an incomplete vehicle until you mentioned that it attaches to something else. On it's own is not that great but as part of something else I guess it could work. I had the havoc and the flying mini vehicle in the havoc's back compartment looked like a complete vehicle of its own. Not so much the case of the despoiler. But, the figure is awesome so I guess the vehicle is just a bonus. Great review Hooded Coco. I like your channel.
A sword on the right side would also be for a left handed draw. Also, didn't Falcon stick Serpentor's cape in the rotor of his chariot in that wonderful GI Joe film?
Aside from the guns, Serpentor's air chariot looks more like a ceremonial vehicle. I could see him flying it into a large meeting hall to address his followers before I could see him flying it into battle.
v2over v1 everyday all day. i agree with u on this..i so wish that his sword was removable from its sheath and that he came with a small fire arm like a pistol or sub machine gun. IMHO one of the best "delux" figures and the despoiler was an AWESOME small attack craft..and one of the best "names/titles" for a vehicle in the entire toyline. Destro was a boss!
Oliver Cromwell, Lord Protector of England (Puritan) Born in 1599, died in 1658 (September). Was at first (only) MP for Huntingdon (but then) He led the Iron Side Cavalry at Marston Moor in 1644 and won. Monty Python aside, I generally prefer Destro's IG uniform, because the original had that odd disco look that was a bit outdated by the time the figure was even made. IG looks more like a warrior with a lot of ancient throwbacks to his ancestry. Oh the original Destro figure wasn't that bad, but the cartoon and later figures really made that collar quite big, and none of them were helped much by the exposed chest. Now the 25th line did have a Destro in the big "Ultimate Battle Pack" box set that used the IG mold, but in original colors and no cape, that looks pretty good. A nice middle ground better then 2 looks. I will agree on the small heads though, it was a big issue with the early revival line, and only certain figures got larger heads as time went on.
The epaullette on Destro shoulder signifies him as the commander of the Iron Grenadiers that are loyal only to Destro. If you notice the Iron grenadiers have similar epaullettes , possibly signifying rank. I heard this from other GI Joe information. And history. Awesome video ! I have the Demon tank too!..I will be starting a vintage toys channel to review some of my collection also...if I find time.
Great review, HCC. The great thing about the deluxe figure and vehicle combo was you had the option of assembling the vehicle and placing decals which gives you some time for the character/vehicle to grow on you. A shame we don't see much of this today. I like this version of Destro a hell of a lot, but the original is still the classic. Almost like Darth Vader getting a make over, this is kind of unnecessary, but helps develop him into a leader of his own army. The Despoiler is unusual and kind of basic. I can't see it tackling much more than a Vamp or Ram before getting picked off. And the next Destro-sized seat becomes a wheelchair. I enjoyed customizing the Despoiler, but it'll never be as cool as a Fang.
I imagine the Despoiler would be used to fly around the battlefield so Destro can view the battle and command the troops. It's the equivalent of Wellington's horse.
I have the Destroyer of Destro with the weapons and the details in light brown color. And like the one shown in the video, it did not come with the stickers !!! Wts ??
One story I came across was Battleforce 2000 was meant to be a stand alone set kinda of a timeline set after Cobra with new Joes against a force with Destro as leader I guess it didn't work or worked on well and got shosehorned into the main continuity which would explain why they seem abit odd and don't fit
Okay so I didn't get ripped off then because the commercial shows the spoiler with the demon and when I bought the demon it just came with just the demon and the driver. And I've often wondered about that
@@HCC788 I have all the Iron Grendiere figures and vehicles. Best sub team, because they're all new characters. Unlike the repaints in Tiger Force and Python Patrol. Yuck!
Oh, and if you're left handed, you would keep the sheath on your right side. You reach across your body to pull the sword out. If the sword was on your right side and you were right handed, you'd be unable to unsheathe your sword without a lot of difficulty.
Destro V.2 is a great adversary to both Cobra and the Joes. There is good detailing on the despoiler and is necessary for Destro to scoot around the battlefield quickly. The docking feature with the D.E.A.M.O.N. is a bonus. Budo also had the hook feature with a sword. For me this set is mid-tier. The Iron Grenadiers are a great sub-team in their own right. Destro is not bound by any thing and can develop his arsenal any way he sees fit. The only draw back with the Iron Grenadiers is that Hasbro forgot to include Scrap-iron in the line up. Sure they went futuristic, but that's how you make progress with technology and engineering. A few things. 1. When are you going to do the James Bond/G.I. Joe connection. as in Chuckles is the daniel craig 007 in casino royal, almost the exact same clothing, Wet-suit is the roger moore version in for your eyes only, Tomax/Xamot are in octopussy. okay so the connection is far reaching but a great theory for a special review. 2. I have a Techno-viper, only missing file card, the question is how does one donate a figure for review. I also have a fast draw, only missing file card. both are in great shape. 3. Are you planning on doing a sub-team month, like iron grenadiers, or even the dreaded 90's special groups, like battle corps and DEF. Keep up the great work HCC.
Thank you! There is definitely some James Bond influence in G.I. Joe. You are welcome to donate to the channel. Some folks have done so. If you want to email me at hoodedcobra.commander788@gmail.com, I can give you instructions. Of course, no one is ever obligated to send anything! I'm not very good at doing theme months. I've done a couple, but I seem to have a hard time planning blocks of reviews like that. I will definitely do more in the future!
Damm i regret selling my Joes. I played allot with them. But i also took care of them! I had allot! (been watching this channels for couple of days now). The hook on destro body was prety strong, infact the whole figure/vehecule was strong. The weak point was the sword! Damm is realy regret! I still remember everything! I did not like destro as child. I wanted version 1! Silver is cooler than gold!
I like everything about the deluxe figure except the gold head. Destro's silver head is just too important an icon. Sam Torres put it well, it's 'like Darth Vader getting a makeover.' Or Cobra Commander wearing a snorkel.
You forgot to mention that Destro's cape is better than Serpentor's. Anyway, this figure is pretty neat, but the vehicle is somewhere in the middle. Watch out for Gold Plastic Syndrome!
i think the despoiler make people give spoilers get it . hello from indonesia can you please do the crimson guard . i think the iron grenadier is morelike the german ss
This looks ,more as sabre if you ask me Commander Cobra788 ... Well because most adventure with G.I Joe's are start in 88 start so I likes Iron Grenadier sub team too ...
Only Annihilators was not high level like other grenadiers , first he is not Black , gold or even gold , black ,red colors & well these card story is incredible ...
As I buy more and more joes. I start to think of them as pieces of art. Sure, I only have seven but I enjoy displaying them. What do you guys think are Joes art? I'd say almost pop art.
I like to think of them as art. I didn't think of them that was when I was a kid, but I can see it now. If you want to learn more about one of the sculptors of G.I. Joe, search for Bill Merklein here on RUclips.
Destro could be left handed. Its easier for him to reach across with his left hand then his right to draw his sword. Of course he could also be right handed and shoot and weld a sword in his left. I don't think it was ever explained which hand was his dominant one.
I'm surprised you consider it a top tier figure despite the sword and the unpainted details. To be honest I like it as it is, but I guess it's more emotional than objective.
"Gold" is referring to the color, not the material. I believe the comic book said the mask was Beryllium steel. The newer mask is probably just gilded.
you got me there. weird. i love the capes on vintage star wars figures but not gi joe... i wonder... i suppose the star wars universe is more strange and therefore more welcoming to strange attire... i'm totally with you standing against the science fiction angle the joes pursued in the 90's
Watching this review 2 years later...love this version of Destro..pretty cool also for guys that missed out on the 83 Destro
Oldie but goodie

Nov 17 2016 You did a great review of the DEMON and showed the docking feature of the Despoiler
15:45 Lol literally :)
17:50 is really funny too.
Great review. I used to have this and it's great seeing it in detail.
I love version one of destro but I'll be on the lookout for this one now thanks for the informative video!

The DEMON is one of the top vehicles too. Tons of awesome features.

This was my Destro as a kid and adult lol The comics made me love Destros character
Iron Grendiere's are a top 10 figure, easily. Beautiful figure. Love the colors.
"Destro's gargantuan exterior" Oh man I wish school didnt exist and I could have seen this earlier.

Beetlejuice from the Stern show must have been the model for the 25th anniversary Destro.

He probably isn't left handed but if he were the pistol and sword are correct. The sword needs to be on the right side to draw with the left hand.

I don't think it was explained, but v1 has a pistol holster on the right side, and he is shown using his pistol with his right hand in the comic book.
Destro in Gi Joe A Real American Hero is the Best version after Revenge of Cobra everything else jumped the shark..

I will review Big Ben eventually. I don't have the figure complete yet.
well, certainly this helped them fly when they jumped the shark
