Phenomenal, top tier figure. Easily. With all the paint apps and extra effort that went into him. It's a glorious toy. The Air Skiff isn't my favorite, but Zanzibar is special.
Great video, as always ;) I remember using Zanzibar as this relentless guy that kept fighting even though he was shot, stabbed or some other crazy thing. Now I want to repair my old Zanzibar. I'm going to check if I have all the pieces and buy online some O Rings.
This video is over 2 years old BUT.....I'm simply making it known that I would totally audition for *"G.I. Joe....The Musical"* should...ya know you wanted to expand on that Zanzibar jingle!
Loved it. Always thought he was irredeemable till I noticed the paint apps as an adult. The gold and silver paint apps between the buckles and wrists sold me.
Would have been great to have a pirate river boat, kind of an old PT boat, instead of the air skiff... Would have been perfect for the pirate/ smuggler theme
Cobra kinda already had that with the Water Moccasin, so between that and the 'cheap add-on for special figures' rule, I can see where they were coming from.
YES! A fave of mine since the day I bought my first one. A figure I wore out with use I loved it so much at the time playing with the skiff in the pool etc but he is still in the collection with some replacement parts that brought him back again! One thing why you are seeing the stress marks and this is brittle plastic as there is a little discussed "1987 Brittle Plastic" that one Hasbro plant was using and vehicles of that year with it are prone to yellowed or browned plastic as well as easily chipped or broken parts. This carried over to some fingers of the time.
I always thought that this figure sounded like a Moroccan night spot. I would love to have seen each Drednok come with a motorcycle. They would have looked great riding into town a la Sons of Anarchy!!
I put the marlon spike threw the mallet loop and let it dangle. I didn't want to bend the loop. The joy sticks are also very fragile, so be careful with them as well. Btw, I loved the parody of "The Major General" song.
When I was a kid I was at a Christmas party for this place that I went to and I got this action figure in this vehicle in a Christmas raffle there. When I got home opened up the toy to put the toy together both halves of the vehicle were the same so I couldn't play with the toy and years later I've been trying to figure out what it was called and I found this review. Probably one of my biggest childhood disappointments about Christmas was getting that toy and only been able to play with the action figure which really wasn't one of my favorite GI Joes.
You know...he may be a bit goofy looking (& named after a small island off the coast of tanzania)....but i kinda have a soft spot for this figure...call me crazy!!
question ? Where do the extra discontinued figs go ?? Are they all distributed till they sell ? or do they just quit putting them out , if so , where they go ????
Fun review! I am sure Hasbro did not expect Zartan to be such a well liked figure. He had triangles on his face, white eyes, a weird (but totally awesome) gimmick, and a swamp vehicle (eeww). The early success of the GI Joe line was hinged on three factors: revolutionary articulation, cartoon miniseries (then a daily series), and the GI Joe comic book. Zartan was well developed all around. The GI Joe line suffered at the loss of Sunbow. The fact that the movie deviated so far from the comic, there would be no turning back, for either Hasbro, or Marvel (Larry Hama). Zanzibar was an attempt to intentionally insert a "great" character into kids' minds. Zanzibar is Captain Phasma, lol. Nobody knew a character with almost no screen time, and introduced in a cartoon (in zany colors), would become legendary. Zartan is like Boba Fett. Nobody can force kids, or adults, to connect with a cool character. Zanzibar, and Captain Phasma, failed to wow!
I always wondered why Zanzibar had a long pony tail when he rode a vehicle with a giant sucking turbine directly behind him. How he didn't get his head sucked in still boggled my mind.
Aside from the Gilbert and Sullivan reference, for some reason your lyrics reminded me of Jack Horkheimer. Some people hustle pool,. Some people hustle cars, But have you ever heard about. The man who hustles stars? Jack Horkheimer. Star Hustler.
You think they had other plans for this figure? Perhaps another sibling of Zartans, or even a revamped Zartan before they decide to go with the pirate theme, and ah thanks, I now have that melody stuck in my head...sometimes I don't know about you Hoodie. lol Great review Hoodie Co Co!
I had never heard of deluxe figures before - is this a term for figures that have particularly high quality or more expensive colors? It had never occurred to me that small vehicle drivers tend to be nicer action figures.
Classified line needs to start putting out some dreadkock figs line has been around 3 years and all we have gotten this far is zartan and zarana……..I think with a update (get rid of the purple and do something with his hair) he could be a really cool classified figure
Pirates vs. Ninjas I remember, I think it was a play on the popularity of both groups at the time, so they were set against each other. I agree that ninjas would win;-)
you got a thumbs up for Dreadknocks , a subscribe for not singing again !!! damnit ! i had already subscribed !!! well ..... Dont sing again ! . Unless you do it in Cobra Commanders voice to make SURE you piss EVERYBODY off lol
The Air kip is not an aircraft. It is an airboat, like the Water Moccasin, or airboats used in the bayou from Texas and Louisiana to Florida Everglades. It uses an aircraft engine and propeller to propel it through swamps.
The only way Zanzibar air skiff would fly if it had a Jetpack, which in this case the engine shown on the back has large pipes like the real Jetpacks. The only issue is that jetpacks can only sustain flight for up to 10 minutes at best. That's probably the reason why cobra use trouble bubbles for short battles or missions.
The Dreadnoks were always an eccentric bunch. Punk rock bikers, post-apocalyptic marauders, a poacher. So why not a pirate? Though I always assumed that "pirate" was basically a fancy way of saying "thief," and Zanzibar was nothing with all that bling if not fancy. When they rereleased the figure as a Joecon exclusive, his filecard suggested that even his eyepatch was just for show. Since he was supposed to be particularly sneaky, I was pretty accepting of that. The Air Skiff was harder to justify. It was an odd vehicle, and while I'm not as fussy about realism as some when it comes to GI Joe, like you, I wasn't sure what to make of it. If it was an air vehicle, as it was show to be in most media, how did it work? And if it was another swamp skimmer like the Chameleon, why not show it that way? And, yeah, why does Zanzibar, of all Dreadnok characters, get packed with a vehicle as a deluxe figure? Something usually reserved for leader characters.
The extra effort was becuz he was to replace zartan kindove like the death of optimisus prime the toy companys idea dont always stick we all loved Zartan to much lol

It seems to me, be cause you already have a prejudice against the more fanciful figures and vehicles, why even go through the trouble of reviewing them. If you're not going to take into account that what allows the vehicles to fly is the child's imagination
But that's not GI Joe. GI Joe isn't a fantasy or science fiction line, or at least wasn't. Jeeps had wheels, helicopters had rotors, and jets had wings and engines. Toys can be freeform whatever-you-wants, sure, but their initial designs still align with specific intents within the line. I can pretend that a Barbie can transform and use it along with Tranformers toys, but if Hasbro shipped a Barbie in a Transformers box, it'd be wrong. The skiff fits more alongside Marvel toys than GI Joe toys, insomuch as it doesn't even really try to make sense technologically. I say this as someone who likes Avalanche and the Dominator, as a side note, so I'm not just against future tech - just feasiblish tech.

Zanzibar, a very silly, obnoxious character Hasbro spent way too much time on, he really shouldn't exist at all if he was just playing second fiddle to the rest of the Dreadnoks. Hasbro's priorities perplex me at times, they should have put all that effort into better Joe or Cobra characters with real world ties. As for the rest of the Dreadnoks, they could have been quickly dealt with by sending in just three Joes: Low Light, Beach Head and Shockwave and a handful of standard soldiers (as backup) and that would have been that!

This is another one of those figures that I love in spite of how freaking silly it is. Or maybe because of how silly it is.
It's a beautiful figure. All those paint apps are amazing. Top tier all the way.
