Always wanted this toy - had to settle for the Tiger Fly when I was a kid. My favorite appearance of Wild Bill was Special Missions 4 when he was shot down with Leatherneck, Roadblock and Lifeline and had to go back to his infantry roots.

GI Joe really took off once they released the Dragonfly. I remember my best friend complaining about his Dragonflys landing skids never staying in their back slot, so when I got my own DF I put some heavy adhesive in both skid slots. This is one of my favorite Joe vehicles because they didn't ridiculously arm it to the teeth. I agree, Wild Bill could have used a little more detail in his paint job, but he is such an anachronistic character maybe no one at Hasbro knew what to do with him. thanks for the facts on his rank and the brilliant stuff you and Susan do. Very entertaining as always.
Great re-review of this classic vehicle. I remember getting this for a good report card in 1983 and it remains one of my favorite toys and one of the reasons GI Joe became my favorite toy line in the 80's. I never thought about using it to move the FLACK like that.
I can see why it would be one of your favorites. It's one of my favorites, too. Such a well-done vehicle. That's a pretty good reward for a good report card!

*I* like Wild Bill *too* (he has a brown handlebar moustache, at least in the cartoon). I do imagine pairing him with Captain Grid-Iron (I'm aware Captain Grid-Iron's a far cry from Wild Bill, as he was released 7 years after Wild Bill, but at least they're both Joes, so they'd get on reasonably well).

I knew only a Tiger Force version of this Chopper named " Tiger fly " . Price was a dam for us so my first chopper was " Retalitor " in 92 with Updraft Pilot . By the way salute for your wife .
My first GI JOE figure Got it for Christmas in 1984. Spent many an hour on missions with Wild Bill & the other Joe I got that year Spirit. We had a house with a Vacant lot next to us The Dragonfly was on Maneuvers for much of the first two months I had him.

Version 2 Wild Bill looks like he is wearing a Cub Scout uniform.
At some point I will review that one, and I'll have to take a closer look at his uniform. I suspect it's a historical cavalry uniform of some kind.
It is but the way Hasbro painted it makes him look like a creepy cub scout leader
It's definitely reminiscent of post Civil War US Army Cavalry attire. Higher ranking officers wore pretty much whatever they wanted, with a basic blue uniform. General Custer was known for being especially flamboyant with his bright yellow uniform trim and giant, white gauntlet style gloves.
I fondly remember playing with this vehicle, I had so much fun flying the Dragonfly around my bedroom on missions against Cobra. I imagined Wild Bill a very likeable guy (as file card states) but absolutely merciless in combat and with skills to rival the pilots of Blue Thunder and Airwolf, if not better!

logged a LOT of hours with this one - Airborne was one of my go-to figures and it only increased whenever i finally got the Dragonfly
My great aunt and uncle had a cotton farm in Brady, TX. Never knew that's where wild bill was from.
One year by shear coincidence I got two of these for Christmas. I couldn't believe it. They were always my favorite vehicles.

Great review redux! !! Loved this vehicle as a kid and man do I want one. This video even makes me want one more. I had the Tomahawk as a kid and it is awesome but this one always has been wanted list. Cause I don't mainly collect Gi Joe and only get the things I really want I hope to find one someday with the box. Again really outstanding review of a fantastic toy. the pistol placement makes sense for drawing while seated, or on horseback....
Makes sense with the air cavalry helicopter=horse theme.

Thank you. :) You know, it took a lot of trial and error to figure out how to do that composite so I move at the same time as the helicopter. It isn't difficult, I just had to figure out how to do it.

@HoodedCobraCommander788 Oh you can get a Sidewinder to hit ground targets with a sidewinder if they have a heat source. A F-15 also hit a ground target with a radar guided Sparrow missile during the gulf war.

I have the tan repaint called the Locust and it comes with the Wild Bill V3 repaint. I think the V3 Wild Bill's paint scheme is nicer than the V2's.

Find it a bit funny that the Tomahawk has a tail rotor that's just kind of redundant for a tandem rotor helicopter.
While the Dragonfly just...straight up doesn't have a tail rotor.

a great update. loved the blues brothers, apocolypse now, and air wolf references. The Dragonfly is a solid vehicle. the rotor droop, and the skids breaking are the only draw back. This is how to design a vehicle, take a real world item and modify it for a fictional universe, just slightly. I had the later design called the Locust, a desert brown model. It had the independently operated dual cannon/grenade launcher turret. A bit of topic,1. after the ice cream soldier review, the general high tailed it to cobra, any word on if he's still there. 2. is the ending an editing error or a clue to next weeks review.
We haven't checked in on the defector General Hawk. Someday we'll have to see what he's up to. The desert-colored Dragonfly looks pretty cool.
Had this as a kid and I loved it.....sadly it got lost.Just bought a real good one that is complete off of EBAY....the skids are not attached.....are the skids something that can be snapped on if in good condition?

I dunno if it was historically accurate, but in the Deadwood tv series, Wild Bill Hickok wore his pistols backwards like that.
I have to be honest, I don't watch a lot of TV. So I haven't seen Deadwood. I don't have time. I'm constantly shooting videos. I'll trust you, though. If the backward pistol is preferred for firing from horseback, it would keep with the theme of the air cavalry, and helecopter=horse.

Great review, as always, Commander. However, I'm sorry to say that you missed a punch. The butt-forward orientation of the holstered revolvers is a clear call-out to how Wild Bill Hickok carried his revolvers, but he did not cross-draw them, as you have the figure doing here. Hickok used a twisting draw, known as the "cavalry draw," in which the wielder twists his wrists inward to draw each revolver with the hand on that same side. However, if the G.I. Joe Wild Bill did decide to draw as you depict, it wouldn't be the only inconsistency with his namesake. The real Wild Bill preferred to secure his revolvers to his person by tying a sash around them, rather than with holsters, and he most famously used 36-caliber Colt 1851 Navies, rather than this Wild Bill's .45 Armies.
I had the TF Dragonfly. It was my favorite copter as a kid. I had the Tomahawk too, but I like this better.
The Tomahawk is bigger, and it's a really nice vehicle. Even so, I prefer the Dragonfly. There's something special about it.

Wild Bill's file card also states he can fly fixed wing aircraft, it would have really cool had Hasbro offered up a North American/Rockwell OV-10 Bronco with a Wild Bill action figure and dedicated gunner. Too much to ask and why is your daughter a ghost?
Am I the only one that wished they made a Blue Thunder vehicle that would fit 3 3/4" Joe figures?

Yeah, even though people like the Wild Bill character, the figure doesn't get a lot of love. It is pretty common. But that's OK. It means everyone who wants one should be able to get one.

I feel having airborne in the gunners seat because it takes the dragonfly away from wildbill in my eyes wildbill and the dragonfly go together like bread and butter the dragonfly belongs with wildbill like the killer whale belongs with cutter, the sharc belongs with deep six, the slugger belongs with thunder, and the skystriker belongs with ace. Airborne can take a generic airplane for all I care.
The mono scheme really didn't do it for me; I actually painted the engines of MY Locust!

Big Boa has been requested a lot, and I really would like to get to him. I still need to complete the figure, He has that very hard-to-find hose for his helmet-- you know, as you would expect on a boxer! The legend of the Rocky figure would be great to explore. Someone even has some photos of the two-up sculpts for Rocky. The sculptor, Bill Merklein, has made a few comments about it. I'll be happy to review Big Boa. I just need to complete him first.
Always thought it was odd that these early air vehicles put a name on the 2nd seat that didn't correspond to any character that actually had an action figure. Kind of wish they would have designated some co-pilots for these 2 seater vehicles (like they did with Tiger Force Tripwire)

That's a reasonable assumption. I didn't know what helicopter the Dragonfly was based on until I did the research for my first review of it. Funny they picked a helicopter called the 'Cobra.'
