The story behind this outfit in the comic is so great - it makes SE even darker than he was already. I had this version of SE along with version 2 and 4, and while I consider version 2 to be classic this might be the best of them all.
I know it's not the most popular version of Snake Eyes, but this is my favorite version of the character from the vintage line. Very cool design and awesome accessories.
I have been a huge fan of HCC788.. Adding guys like this new2vero2 along with Halfthebattle and formbx257... It just "feels" like you guys are a Team having fun. Thanks to HCC788 Ive added and enjoyed all and encourage EVERY GIJoe Fan to subscribe to EVERY Joe RUclips channel..
Another example of how neat a lot of the 1989 figures were. Settling into GI Joe a little late, this was the one and only Snake Eyes I had at the time. I think the omission of Vietnam from this figure's file card was a part of making the toys timeless, so it just used the somewhat vague "Southeast Asia." It was rare for a figure to specifically refer to actual events and time periods; Duke's seemed to be the most specific, giving actual years for when he did what. My favorite of the modern Snake Eyes figures is the "Arctic Trooper" with the parka, not to be confused with the white-coated movie version.
I really liked this version of Snake Eyes it was the first one I owned. Years later I got a Street Fighter movie edition Ghile and took his black parachute pack and strap (same as the green mail order parachute pack) and gave it to Snake Eyes. He resembles the character from issue 104 of the Marvel comic run.
This was the last joe i ever bought as a kid ( i was turning 13 in 89 and done with toys but i still had to get snake eyes).. Its also the only one i still have from childhood
As a pre-teen I made a custom "unmasked" Snake Eyes v3 figure. I even made up a little removable mask for him... but the mask looked pretty ridiculous. Oh the memories.
When I was about 10 I made "post-war waiting at airport Snake-Eyes" using Footloose. I didn't know who Footloose was but somehow I ended up with that figure. I covered his head in hot glue and wrapped a white paper/wire bread tie around his head like bandages, leaving the eyes showing. It was an okay end product. Actually I hope I still have it in that condition but something tells me I tried to restore the figure in my twenties (ha ha oops).
@Robertjustafan sorry for the delayed response.. are you asking for the death of Snake Eyes story line? they where in issues 212-213-214-215... The Dawn of the Arashikage was between 246-250.. over on my channel we are about to cover the 2019 GI Joe yearbook, and issue 260.. make sure you join.. follow ..and let me know your thoughts on these new stories...
Snake Eyes v2 was ninja/Japanese-themed with the stylized katana and influences from the comic series. For some reason, the figure of Snake Eyes v3 was Kung Fu/Chinese-themed with the 3-section staff, butterfly knives, and lion sword. (Of course, Larry Hama never used the 3-section staff and changed the lion sword to a katana, keeping the Japanese influences.)
I liked this one as a kid but he was eventually replaced by V4. My son loves V3, so I picked him up V12 which is a repaint of V3 with some gold to break up the silver applications and the Joe symbol down the leg, a great update. Hoodie 788 would like this one. My personal favorite version is V27 from 2005. It's a repaint of V4 in great colors for the Toys R Us exclusive Heavy Assault Squad. 👍
I think this is how Snake-Eyes evolved. He was totally a commando in v.1 then the ninja aesthetic crept in more with v.2, and v.3 is Ninja Snake-Eyes. Even his uzi has a flash suppressor for stealth. These 3 in my eyes(no pun intended) are the holy trinity of Snake-Eyes design.
Awesome review as always ...I had this one both vintage and modern and the vintage one was the last figure from my vintage collection it now resides in my mother's storage but I had that figure all through my 20's and 30's very special piece to me because we went through a lot together I love em both but this particular vintage figure holds a place in my heart .... bravo my friend
I agree! I liked how he had a ( what I call a Gladiator ) style visor. And of course I was a big fan of Wolves so he was definitely the coolest version
Another great video, I got into G.I.Joe cause of the sunbow series, years later after seeing your videos I decided to pick up the G.I.Joe Tradepaperbacks and read what the comics were like, I showed my 3 year old nephew a picture of Snake-Eyes and later on when I show him the picture of Snake-Eyes without the name he will say Snake-Eyes, Guess showing him the of Snake-Eyes made him like he already knew who Snake-Eyes was.
Sure do miss these. Great work as always B~ It's hard not to like Snake-Eyes regardless of the version and even harder to play him as a child in make believe...always got caught talking 😂🤣😅
This is THEE Snake Eyes. I ended up getting two of them because someone stole the first one. He was my favorite GI Joe toy…….period. I got him the first time one summer when I was taking swim lessons at my local YMCA. Will never forget that. Went on down to Toys R Us and got him with my own allowance money…..straight up! The action figures were only about 2 bucks and some change so……
Really enjoyed this- as always! Though I have other versions of him, version 3 was the very first Snake Eyes I owned. Still have him to this day. Go joe!!
The Benelux packaging had his name in dutch and french renamed differently from v1 and v2. It translated in french as “ Rattlesnake”. To me it was a different character, much darker. Great design from Mark Pennington.
I remember reading the Snake Eyes Trilogy story in the comic as a kid. It wasn't until I re-read it as an adult that I understood this Snake Eyes figure is wearing fetish wear.
I think this version of Snake Eyes is awesome, didn't know for years that the long rifle looking thing was a blowdart...nice touch..This version Snakey goes well with Storm Shadow v2 from 88
What new2vero2 said about IDW comics makes me realize that Skywarp from Transformers being member of G.I. Joe does actually fit in there really well even if he used to be bad guy.
That Series was cancelled due to the Writer posting some weird stuff ( I'll leave it at that) .. It was actually VERY bad series and only lasted 6 issues. We just wrapped up the Silent Options Story featuring Dawn, Bombstrike, and Agent helix and OMG was that grrrrrreat. I have that series broken down too and its amazing. Again, Hama is looking at the Future of GIJoe BUT with a firm foot in the past so its a excellent blend . I think all ol school Joe fans will enjoy !
The modern figures are generally MORE proportionate than the O-ring toys. That's why they're slimmer and less bulky. Also, the knives ARE slightly larger than the molded ones, for some reason, though they didn't need to be. I really haven't had any issues with having him hold his weapons and accessories, so I'm not sure why yours fall out so easily... That said, I have BOTH figures and while I still really like the vintage figure, the modern figure is WAY more versatile and poseable, WITH the removable blades that YOU WANTED on the original. I guess there's just no satisfying some people, but it is what it is.
version 4 and modern version 3 are my favorites. I had a silent tear for the passing of snake eyes T^T it is good his legacy live on in a passing of the mantel
As far as the original run, or classic line if you will. Snake Eyes was my favorite. Next to Rock n Roll. V2 was my favorite. Then V3, then V1. V4 , V5 and V6 can take a hike.
I never cared for this version of Snake Eyes, maybe because I didn't see it until I was out of Joes. Now I pick it up pretty cheaply and use the arms and lower body for Night Assault custom Vipers.
I'm pretty sure the waist used to have a hook for the uzi on the right hip.. but most of them seem broken off near the base, so hard to see where it was.
Right on awesome character and this version isn't the worse in the world...Not too many characters in the whole line could reinvent themselves in the ways Snake Eyes seems to be able to. I'm all about the '82/83 and '85 the most though.
this is the most reproduced version out there especially weaponwise as V2s weapons especially the sword seemed to have vanished but v3 is everywhere, also update couldve scaled down butterfly blades your right and its a comic he can always come back plus he always saved face for special occations
would've been so cool if those knives on his chest came off, but over that would mean those would be lost pieces that would drive the price of this figure complete to sky rocket in today's market! lol
Snake Eyes, I never include him my top favorite GI Joe's, because he's the best. I always say, my favorite besides Snake Eyes is Shockwave. I'm not a fan of this version, mainly to due with those knives on his chest, and that sword, maybe strapped to his legs or criss-crossed in his backpack. The sword looks more like a broad sword than a katana, or rather a ninjato, and what's with the claw thing on the handle? Besides that, I think this is a descent version of him, much better that what came next in the og line... Great review as usual Hoodie! Thanks!
@@adamverwolf9499 - Issue #155 contains A Letter from Snake Eyes.. I would recommend typing "HCC788 Letter from Snake Eyes" in RUclips search as he does a great job reading that letter.. I referenced that Issue (155) to grasp a better meaning of the Death Of Snake Eyes 4 part issues on IDW 212-213-214-215, I also spoke about the Dawn of the Arashikage Series 246-250. All of these issues are broken down on my channel if you'd like to listen in and follow along :)
I had version 2 of Snake Eyes back in the day, and when version 3 came out, something that kept me from getting it was the two silver knives molded into his chest -I just didn't like they way it looked (if only I knew at the time that, in regards to looks, things would go even crazier with version 4). The 25th anniversary update of this figure I must say that does a lot of improvement (at least in my opinion) by making the knives on his chest removable this time around.
Got this version of Snake Eyes for my collection in 2014, along with the updated version in the modern style sculpt. While this look might not be as iconic as his version 2 action figure from 1985, I still enjoy it even if the Marvel comic series gave the costume a crazy origin. The first Snake Eyes action figure I owned, was version 4 from 1991. I still think that version 4 was a decent enough figure even with the brighter colored uniform and accessories. I do how ever wish that version 4 had the Uzi an accessory. Like Flint's shotgun or Low Light' sniper rifle, it is an iconic accessory and to me is just as important of an accessory to Snake Eyes as his sword and Timber are. I do agree that the modern sculpt version of this figure could have been better. He defiantly needed an Uzi that he could hold properly, along with a better way to attach and remove the Night Vision Goggles. Also I would think given how far Hasbro has come with making working holsters for pistols and sheaths for knifes, they could have found a better way to store the Butterfly Swords.
You weren't kidding about Snake-Eyes' story being more and more convoluted over time. I think every major Cobra character is connected to him. Cobra Commander's brother was the drunk driver that killed his parents and twin sister when he came home from Nam. Baroness wrongfully thought Snake Eyes had killed her Brother [he actually killed the guys who killed her brother. Destro and his Father exonerated him on the spot. Unfortunately Baroness never heard or saw this so this led to the events of the Snake Eyes trilogy where Snake Eyes gets this ver.3 outfit. That's not counting how many times he's had his face restored only to have it burned again, have it restored again and you get the point. Hama was clearly running out of ideas when he started this trope.
The last G.I. Joe I bought and I only bought it because I really liked the origin story of the costume in the comics. It's cool though, I turned 13 that year and found out about girls.
One of my favs in the entire line, i might like this one more than version 2 which is saying alot since that version is another standout. I loved how this figure sorta sorta had a more "ninja" feel than a true military commando. i dun mind the accessories as much as you do but a lack of timber was a mistake. I never read the comics as a kid...kinda interesting how they incorporated a costume change with a storyline. Shame they couldnt work this version into the cartoons somehow.
Ironically in the Devil Due G.I. Joe comic books, Snake Eyes has a single Butterfly sword strapped to his chest. I don't recall if he was ever shown using it thought.
Great review! I think this version of Snake Eyes isn't as great as the first 2 versions. My favorite will always be version 2. This figure has too much silver and those sculpted knives on his chest are too big in my opinion. I think they should've gave him the same accessories as version 2, only have the uzi and sword molded in silver with the same black packpack. I think having Timber with this figure should've been made a priority at Hasbro, too.
I got a d&d toy that kinda looks like that sword iirc. If so maybe the prior sword is also a same mold different industry. I'd see gi joe guns or bodys on generic toys when young always wondered why some and not others
How come everyone forgets Snake Eyes first dies in Devils Due GI Joe: America’s Elite #7? Devils Due was the first to continue the story after 155 and when they lost the license that continuity was “Disavowed”
There was only 1 version of Timber? I am pretty sure there were 2 Timbers released. I know I did not get the 1st one that came out. Unless it is a re-release and repackaging? But the Snake Eyes death and "resurrection" story sounded pretty cool. I know about the death, but I stopped buying the GI Joe comics a long time ago. Overall, I am okay with this version. Not my favorite, but it is pretty good.
If Snake Eyes was trained by the Arishikage Clan in Japan, why does he sport so many Chinese fighting weapons? Butterfly swords on his chest, 3 section staff, Tai Chi sword, and his scimitar from V2 looks like a Chinese fighting sword too. Maybe he took a liking to his Chinese fighting styles he picked up? Thanks for the review! Have an awesome day!
Because these weapons in this specific version, as well as the suit, are not his, but the torturers', he stole from them once he get rid of his captivity. This figure represents the said episode and said adventure in his career.
I have both the 2nd and 3rd Snake Eyes. I saw the 4th at Toys R Us once and was quite irate because it looked so awful. In a perfect world I would I could have a version 1 Snake eyes with version 2's level of detail, mobility, and wolf. The 3rd version is pretty cool but the knives on the chest is to much, would have been better with a more utilitarian commando vest. Snake Eyes, Stalker, and Firefly are my favorite figures. Very bad ass characters. Sadly I think GI Joe jumped the shark a bit with going down the Ninja rabbit hole. That said, at age 12 I did by a ninja costume, get cheep mirror sun glasses and ran around in the dark trick or treating as Snake Eyes.
I am a very big fan of the decision to kill Snake-Eyes. He was always a favorite but as time dragged on, he suffered from severe over-exposure. His death was a great culmination of several years worth of plot threads, as many problems came together as a massive attack on the team. It took every crazy and over-the-top threat of several years together in order to get him. Now his replacements, Sean and Dawn, have gone on to open up new storylines and all new aspects to such favorites as Scarlett, Stalker, and Hawk. The future is strong.
I covered the Special Mission that Larry Legend had between issues 251-255, We get a Stalker Story, Duke, Destro, Baroness, and Scarlett... The Baroness and Scarlett's story was AMAZING. in the Scarlet Special Mission, you get to see Her and Snake Eyes in a different light and its actually really touching because here you have this STRONG Women, and she lost the love of her life.. So its a new light on her.. and I think all fans will be touched..
@@new2vero2 Yeah for sure. There's also that earlier moment when Sean and Scarlett are on the Staten Island Ferry together. Larry had just written SE and Scarlett there again after decades only a year or two earlier, and it was heartwarming that time... but when it's Sean there and she's all like "just keep standing there a moment longer" it was incredibly sad.
@@unclejames6365it was creepy and weird and ultimately pointless, since Snake Eyes' resurrection-via-cloning in #300 rendered the entire plotline hilariously inconsequential (so much so that I'm tempted to suspect Hama of deliberately trolling the section of the fanbase that sees Snake Eyes as being over-exposed)...
I love the Commando Snake Eyes myself.

My fav snake-eyes!! Oh that one is beautiful! Plus I love that it was featured in the GIJOE NES game. 😎
The ridge pattern on his backpack are darts for the blowgun. Then you can actually wedge the uzi hook /ring on to one of the hooks on the backpack
I always used the hook on the "Uzi" as a zip line hook.
That is a great idea.
Ha! Me too!
I have several figures that almost have their fingers sawed off due to too many zipline insertions...I was horrified when I noticed it as a kid.

The 2nd. version will ALWAYS be the best version of Snake-Eyes. All black with that legendary visor.
My favorite version of Snake Eyes and I still have that figure
I always thought the ridges on his backpack were blow darts.
i think they are
This version is cool. I only have the first two thusly.
Those ridges on the backpack are darts for the blow gun, genius.
This was my first Snake Eyes, though I would usually pair it with the Iron Grenedier uzi.
I had NO idea Snake-Eyes died in the comic. I learned something today.

The hook on the Uzi is so he can hang it in the clothes line when he’s washing his uniform
Well I think they learned from their mistake with snake-eyes because it seems like the classified line is getting a Snake-eyes repaint each year now!!
RIP Crazylegs
28:48 is snake eyes holding Crispo's arm here?
The knives are called Butterfly knives they are used in n Wushu Type Chinese martial arts typically.
I love this version :D great video man :D
HAve this version of snake eyes. Need some of his weapons...where to get?
Snake Eyes needs to get some sheaths for those knives on his chest! Gonna take his eyes out.
It hooks on the back when your using the knife
Super informative!
Shame they couldnt work this version into the cartoons somehow.
the knives are known as Chinese Butterfly Knives. They're ridiculously large to be strapped to his chest that way.
Ironically in the Devil Due G.I. Joe comic books, Snake Eyes has a single Butterfly sword strapped to his chest. I don't recall if he was ever shown using it thought.
That's fiction, just enjoy it
I don't think that "uzi" was originally intended for this figure. I think they tossed it in to go with his commando theme.
You can hook the uzi on the blowgun barrel. Then he can at least hold everything, although it doesn't make much real sense.
he goes well with 88 storm shadow 89 stalker 89 rocknroll
The best Snake Eyes action figure is the 2011 v54 you should really get that one
I got into gi joe with the Devil Due comics and I kind of fell like that era is really overlooked.
PS. V3 Snake Eyes is wearing s&m gear.
Part of why it's overlooked is that the IDW continuation rendered it non-canon.
I have the whole DDP run. It's very enjoyable.
hahaha saw that stalker's thumbs were broke; hated that with the originals
you can slot the blowgun with sword
I don't know if it was necessary to spoil Snake Eyes' death, the video title says Snake Eyes toy review.
Snake Eyes was available in 1987 and 1988 he went by the codename. CHUCKLES
The character of Dawn Moreno was created for cosplayers. Fact. Larry Hama admitted it!
That is lame AF. Almost as lame as the idea that a 75 pound 14 year old girl is Cobra Commander's bodyguard.
How come everyone forgets Snake Eyes first dies in Devils Due GI Joe: America’s Elite #7? Devils Due was the first to continue the story after 155 and when they lost the license that continuity was “Disavowed”
I remember that story. Not a big fan, that gave me a lot of enmity towards the Red Ninjas.
His file card does say he's an expert in "Kung fu" as well as Japanese martial arts
Because these weapons in this specific version, as well as the suit, are not his, but the torturers', he stole from them once he get rid of his captivity. This figure represents the said episode and said adventure in his career.
@@sexcorpio6976 I remember that comic! One of the few Joe comics I had!
@@breandan3280 version 3 really leaned towards Kung Fu !
@@delvis7842 And one of the bests in the hole collection. So is the figure
Sadly hama killed him
But storm shadow picked up the mantle
