    This was the last GI Joe vehicle I got as a kid. I was largely done with the line by 1993, but I just couldn't say no to one last vehicle that actually came with a pilot, since that had been largely phased out in the 90's (and was one of my favorite things about GI Joe toys)

    An interesting anecdote for the Cobra Stellar Stiletto... The gun used on the front was a remold of 1986 Transformers Hot Rod's larger gun.

      @@HCC788 so in ur army when a vehicle driver has to get out for whatever reason....vehicle disabled, arrive at the objective or whatever they are just defenseless unless they can pick up an enemy weapon?
      all my drivers, pilots etc have weapons!

    Funny how much they shrank down that Joe logo on the box. It was almost as if they were flirting with the idea of Star Brigade being an entirely different line but just couldn't pull the trigger.

    Now that you mention it, the Starfighter and Sci-Fi look a lot like they're from Lanard's Star Force series.
    I have this set and I'm fond of it, but I'm scared to death to place the helmet on Sci-Fi's head lest I scratch the paint off his bouffant. If only the helmet was a little larger or softer...

    • @HCC788
      @HCC788  6 лет назад

      I was expecting the helmet to be soft. I was surprised when it wasn't. With that head, a soft helmet would have been a lot better.

    I actually like the figure and the vehicle, but it fits more with Star Wars than GI Joe. And Sci-Fi 's face looks kind like Han Solo, a little bit. Laser Rockets? Maybe Laser guided Rockets. Laser communication with the rockets. LiDAR or Lasers Launching rockets. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lidar en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laser_rangefinder

    Great review, I am not overly familiar with the Star Brigade line, but I do like some of the figures I have seen, namely the Cobra Commander V7, the Astro Viper, the T.A.R.G.A.T. , the Blackstar and the orange Sci-Fi with the gray helmet. The latter I was sure I would not like but I did.

    I had this vehicle and figure as a kid. The star fighter didn’t fit with sci-fi so I never used the two together. I liked using sci-fi version 3 as a cold weather trooper when I was a kid. Also fly eagles fly! Philly! Philly!

    • @HCC788
      @HCC788  6 лет назад

      Was there a go-to pilot you used for the Starfighter?

    • @NerdGasims
      @NerdGasims 6 лет назад +1

      HoodedCobraCommander788 I would use Skydive from air patrol since on my Skydive figure when I was a kid his parachute pack clip broke. He matched the colors of the jet and to me he fit in more as a pilot. Sci-fi version threes color scheme matched with Subzeros so I used them to as cold weather troops.

    • @NerdGasims
      @NerdGasims 6 лет назад

      I used Skydive from Skypatrol as the Starfigher pilot when I was a kid since by that time the clip on the parachute pack of my Skydive broke off and the only other Skypatrol figure I had was Altitude. The color scheme on Sci-fi version three matched with Subzero so I put them two with Snowjob and had a small arctic squad of Joes.

    • @NerdGasims
      @NerdGasims 6 лет назад

      Also since Skydive was part Skypatrol I felt as a kid he was more of a pilot then Sci-fi.

    Compared to new figures that they produced for Star Brigade back then these re-issues are solid toys and seem fine to me. I mean even not that great re-issues are always far better option than figures with less articulation. That said from new toys that they made for Star Brigade Armor Bot was interesting attempt to give G.I. Joe they own mech. Sure it wasn't very good attempt but still they did try.

    I never could get the concept , of why they colored the G.I. Joe's so brightly with purples, orange or bright pink or lime green. This was one reason why , I think my son ; always seemed to pass up this G.I. Joe line of action figures I noticed he went to the militaried colored figures instead.

    I think this vehicle is a nice vehicle to go against the Stellar Star Stiletto. I had the Stellar Star Stiletto growing up. I liked it, but played with it as an ordinary jet, not as a space vehicle. The Starfighter, in my opinion, is one of the better G.I. Joe vehicles made in the 1990's.

    The head difference was probably because they used the same mold. Use of molds would reduce or remove details as they got older. Since the heads are the same, with some softening differences, that seems to be the case.

    It is hard to believe that the same toyline that gave us great toys like the skystriker, night raven, terror drome and so many other great toys simply ran out of creative ideas. Instead of being the leader in action figures they seemed to copy other franchises instead of standing out from the crowd like they did in the eighties. They could have done the Starbrigade sub team more justice than adding aliens to the line trying to capitalize on Star Wars which was a toyline they out did in the begining with the articulation and vehicles early on in the Joe line. It was like Hasbro forgot the identity of Gi Joe and by the end Joe was fighting aliens and hunting dinosaurs and lost any touch with reality.

    By the time all this came out I was already done playing with toys. But had it come out earlier I would have been fine with the space element of it all. But looking at what was released, I think they could had done a much better job of it. Make the aliens less cartoonish. Better colors. And no battle armor. And I never liked spring loaded weapons. I was just fine with making the actions myself. Other than that, eh whatever.

    I’m not a fan of lasers in Gi Joe. Even as a kid I knew lasers were not good weapons. Growing up I know that the army does experiment with directed energy weapons to deal with drones. Larry Hama knew enough to make lasers basically high tech blow torches. I like the idea of Gi Joe in space. But the Stilletoes exposed engine details don’t make sense. The Natzis designs were more realistic. The Cobra Pogo was a great idea for a lunar weapon system. The stiletto needed more attention to what it was supposed to be, a space launched attack vehicle

  • @Canoby

    This really makes me sad for 90s kids. It's really too bad that Hasbro and Kenner couldn't get it together once they became one company. Everything should have been in the same scale and grounded on two key lines Realism in G.I. Joe and Sci fi in Starwars. If kids needed a space ship for Joes do what we did and use the starwars ships. The Terminator, Waterworld, VR Troopers, Aliens and Congo toylines would still be popular with collectors if you could have mixed them in with Joes and Starwars. Hasbro should have done this in the 80s with COPS and Inhumanoids too.

    • @josiahalcorne7568

      There were maybe 25 joes worth having in the 90s vs close to over 100 quality 80s Joes. With a couple of Waterworld bad guys added to Dreadnoks a Linda Hamilton and Sigorney Weaver thrown in would have enhanced the line and might have created support for more lines that could have had a domino effect like Starship Troopers.

    • @HCC788
      @HCC788  6 лет назад

      Kirk Bozigian has talked about how they made their decisions at the time. They felt the action figure market was saturated and couldn't sustain another brand. So instead of creating new toy likes, they released them under the G.I. Joe umbrella. That's how we got Street Fighter II in G.I. Joe.
      Of course, Ninja Turtles and Power Rangers were able to thrive in that "saturated" market, so I'm not sure Hasbro's logic was very sound.

    • @josiahalcorne7568
      @josiahalcorne7568 6 лет назад

      The turtle line by 93 and the Power Rangers were basically the anti Larry Hama toy lines. Where Larry Hama was able to create a back story that made sense for hundreds of characters Turtles just said now put funny hats on them or make them sports themed or some other lazy gimmick, and the Power Rangers were that multiplied by the fact it was just 6 repaints of the same figure.

    • @sparkster1701
      @sparkster1701 6 лет назад

      I'm with you on that. Then Hasbro goes cheaper on the Street Fighters and reuses them for the movie figures, plus a few Joe vehicles. Did the same years later with Mortal Kombat.

    These two Sci Fi figures look pretty good. Helmet is OK, and the gun could have a better design. Give a blue painted stripe along the outer seam of the pants and arms it would look better. The character would work better as a crew member for the Defiant, he is not a pilot.
    The Starfighter just looks dumb. It is far off from the vehicles that look like they could work in the real world.

    Age and experience makes this toy even more comical, lol. Great review though, I loved your humor! I hated the spring loaded toys! Pilots in the Air Force and Navy are commissioned officers. Army uses warrants to fly helicopters. Stating he completed his Master's degree, he already had a Bachelor's degree. Why wasn't he a commissioned officer already? Grunt went back to college to seek a commission. They should have included he attended OCS (released a Louis Gossett Jr action figure lol) and was now an O-2, or at least included that part in the comics to explain the toy!
    This action figure faux pas is still nowhere near as bad as renaming Ripcord, and making him Specialist Altitude. Ripcord was my fave figure and had a good comic storyline. Why don't you do a review about the atrocities of reassigning characters, making their history obsolete. Sorry, digressed! Still have not forgiven the first Joe live action movie. Lol!!!!!!!

    what a mess...
    the defiant was a great looking vehicle, and a feat as far as size goes but...
    aside from being attacked on the ground, playwise, or for dios, it s pretty much useless.
    space was just not a good thing for the joe line, it should never be mixed with it.
    playing, or making dios with such big planes as the skystriker was hard enough.
    either way, you just don t get enough fun for your money.
    I liked the stilleto, but the pogo sucked, and this thing just takes the cake, and it tastes bad.
    I m happy that you reviewed it however, if only to make me feel good about not getting it.
    also, I m always curious about what it looked like in detail, and your opinion makes it a blast, ha, ha!
    if there was any good reason for Hasbro to sell this crap, it was for your review of it.
    and, for $10, it was worth a laugh, was it not? ha, ha!
    for sci fi, well, I liked him in his v 1 version as most of the other figs.
    while for some other characters bright colors were bad, for him, it seems fitting.
    I still hate the 'replacement' concept however, like if Flash was dead or something...
    in 2018, I find that the 82 looks still holds pretty good for Flash and most of the crew.
    only Hawk, Zap, Short fuse, and Grunt look like they d need a little more, but I felt like that in 82 anyways.
    the same head molds were a downer as well, Hasbro really pushed it too far afterwards though.
    aww, if my 2 cents made a dollar, I d be rich, ha, ha!
    good show Commander!

    Hey, this is corporate America! What your parents did to preserve society is boring! What ever trend is hot is what’s important. No more Gi Joe Fire Fighters or Soldiers. Let’s have some Gi Joe You Tube influencers! Can we get Big Boa to take a fall for Logan Paul??
