'Bug hunt' is probably a reference to Aliens - it's one of Bill Paxton's lines.

One of my favorites as a kid. Sure he is banana yellow with a can of play doh, but like you pointed out the neon 90s trends in cartoons, just made him even cooler as a kid.

"Transformers had a Universe, G.I. Joe had a universe."
Well teeeeeechnically, G.I. Joe and Transformers _shared_ one universe. So... G.I. Joe was ALWAYS Science Fiction _THE WHOLE TIME!!_ >:)

That head sculpt reminds me of Gnawgahyde. When I heard the term "bug hunt" I thought of Starship Troopers. I don't remember Play-Doh figures like this at all, I think I was out of GI Joe before this came out.

Blast-Off was my favorite Mega Marine. As an adult collector I have to say that the 90s had a great deal of greatly sculpted figures but the neon...man...it doesn´t look good on display unless you put them on a separate chelf or in a different room...closet...altogether!!

Wasn't their "tank" basically a repaint of the Cobra Parasite, but with a spring launcher? I recall that being a real bone of contention for me at the time, where they were just doing a crap ton of repaints and calling them new figures... Then they did it with a vehicle.

I have questions about the play-doh armour, are u supposed to trim around the shoulders so the figure can move his arms a little bit? Did the play-doh mold imply that to be done with excess hanging outside of the molded pattern? Has anyone tried this so gung-ho doesn't look like he is hanged from a cross? How long can u leave the armor on a figure, a day? A week? Does it turn to stone with crystals only after 25 years? Thanks.

did not know that green bug guy with tentacles was a Cobra Bio-Viper . It's in one of my random boxes of unidentified action figures that I've never found anybody to identify I always thought it was a Spiderman figure or X-Men. They did some really weird action figures at that time. Released under Spiderman and a few other toy lines like Power Rangers just always assumed it was from one of those toy lines. Not about to go digging it out to put up with my G.I. Joe's would probably take me a week to find that box even though I know roughly where it is. Not about to go through six hours of work to dig all those boxes out and then several days of looking through them. Actually I played with Plato when I was young and used it in the high school in art class I'm not making that up. It was one of the things we use quite a bit in high school art class. And I already knew what 20+ year old Plato looked like LOL. Personal experience of stuff being back from when you were a kid literally had a couple of sealed cans of Plato. That little gag about still tastes surprisingly minty made me laugh . Can you imagine if this subset had their own cartoon. The horror the horror. I never did get what they were thinking with the neon colors being this big shoot me sign.

That helmet is actually very appropriate for combat....given it's a straight copy of the one in Aliens. Have look at your clip in 3:39 (complete with microphone, neck protecting flap, etc). Given it barely fits on this figure, I wonder if they created the molds for another Aliens project, and then reused it here.

HCC, if you're looking for something GOOD from the 90s to review, you should really have a look at some of the Oktober Guard figures. They retain a lot of the 'realistic military' look that the main line of Joes was starting to lose by that point.

The weird thing is this Gung-Ho could have been solid middle tier if the yellow was a nice olive drab, like the Colonial Marines mentioned, and the helmet more fitted and also olive drab. Granted I think his duty cover would have been a good return....but alas a simple utility cover isn't MEGA. The tree weapons are never fitting. The only one I could even see a character like Gung-Ho using is Muskrat's shotgun and machete. One last note, I think I know why Gung-Ho lost something in later versions, it wasn't that he was just bald, his first two firgues had his mustache seperated at the upper lip, the later ones gave him a full on Porn-Stache. Anyway, enough rambling great review, I only went on so long because when you did the Monster Blaster APC unboxing I commented never put a Mega Marine on it.....it's like you knew.....

    Gung doh.....
the crayola plasticine was much better, but even then, it was a stupid concept.
the media covered the only worthy Gung ho, v1...
Hasbro laughed of the character, dying his mustache and eyebrows.
was he a fashion victim? d.
the tattoo reduction is a farce, I never bought the later versions,
it was a stupid mistake not to reuse the original head mold, it would have been much better and cheaper.
I can t wait to see the monsters though. good show Commander!

Thank you for doing this. You are my favorite toy reviewer. Yo are the one who I relate to the most. I wish formbmx and some of the other non american reviewers opened up a little more about there play experience. It would be interesting to get a feel for there culture through the lense of gi joe. This is a great theme month. The 90s don't get enough credit. The cartoon was bad but there were great figures that came out these years. Ambush had a great play gimmick. Pathfinder was a great Florida Joe, made us Crackers proud. Range viper was very scary troop builder. Stretcher was a great addition to medic crew plus some weightlifter love we hadnt got since Rock n roll. Topside filled in some sailor gaps Shipwreck and Wayne Golden Alexander(bronze bombers) couldn't fill. Skypatrol was great reuse of molds you wouldnt have known about if you favored figures over vehicles. Vapor and Overlord are great villans. Big Ben is solid. Immortal is good bad guy. Dusty3 comes with pet plus beret enough to justify him in my collection. Heavy Duty might be the best of the black Joes. Mercer is great update of one of most interesting characters. Interagator is one of most frightning bad guys. Dessert scorpian is murder in the sandbox. Duke3 would be ranked higher if his mold wasnt done better with leatherneck figure. The Gung Ho v3 had great sculpt but best coloring was in 2001. Bullet proof was a weak figure but always great to get diversity. Ninja force has its place. Slalker3 is great figure. Spirit3 is great diversity figure. Fishing trip bazooka is underated. Colonel courage is better than hisname suggests plus diversity. Mindbender2 is great sci fi angle joe. Duke4 is acceptable, General Flagg is also acceptable. Headhunter stormtrooper might be best bad guy ever. Bio viper and monstro viper are great monsters. Mohawk zartan really rounds out dreadnoks line up. Street fighters had there place. lifeline 4+5 serve purpose. Metalhead 2 is usable. shipwreck 2 is great figure. the alien figures get along fine in my toybox. the 30th anniversary guys all worked. Joe colton works out fine. That covers most of the highlights for me in the 90s. Some snow guys and water guys weren't very good but made it into my collection just because they round out their niche. My action figure universe is pretty out there so realism isn't important for me. we play alongside vintage and modern star wars, Marvel, or anything else in the 1/18 scale. I am a big fan of diversity so females aliens and minority action figures become a priorty.

While I agree with the playdough, the Mega Marines, and general 90s disgust, but the 1989 Cobra La Movie was fucken GREAT. It gave a rather interesting backstory to Cobra Commander, Serpentor, added a new enemy that could be combated, all the while adding some partially beliveable sci fi feel to the series. Its not like Sci Fi like Cobra La was unheard of in the GI Joe Series up till then, especially with Serpentor, Dr. Mindbender, and a lot of Destro's Bats, and of course, the Hydro Viper. I think all of these made GI Joe a great MILITARY sci fi epic that would span generations. The great thing up till the end of the Cobra La, is things still looked really "GI Joe" ish. The Cobra La villians looked and behaved in a way that can be expected of GI Joe. They didnt go Neon, they didnt go to crazy in the color scheme, and while yes, they were physically stronger then some of the GI Joes, especially when looking at the leaders, it was to create an "EPIC BOSS FIGHT" in toy form, something that video games were introducing at the time. When you get into neon and other over the top "acting" like the mega marines, or the "bio hazard squirt gun soldiers" then you get weird issues.

Great review! I'm glad the ones my son had weren't any of the Mega Marines. There were quite a few figures from the 90's and it seemed that many had been customized. He did have Gung Ho v3 and v3.5 (?) but it looked like the legs of one was added to the other so he had an all o.d. uniform. Looking back at all the figures there were some good ones from the 90's and some that were like WTF. I'd love to see you do a review on Mace and his helmet/rocket launcher. Next to the play doh that has to be one of the most absured weapons in the line!
