    Airline food has extra salt and sugar added, might explain the extra salt and spice in this ration for the Russian Air Force.

    That is a beast of a ration. A great review. If it wasn't so damned expensive to post stuff to Australia, I'd get one myself.
    A little information on the label of that buckwheat kasha. The first "word" in the red ribbon on the label- гост (GOST in our alphabet)-is a contraction of государственных стандарт. This means "state standard". In the USSR, they developed a series of standard recipes to make a basic Soviet cookbook. GOST was also used for the standarisation of other things in the USSR.
    Rassolnik is a traditional Russian soup made from pickled cucumbers, pearl barley, and pork or beef kidneys. A vegetarian variant of rassolnik also exists, usually made during Lent.
    Was that "buckshot" actually metal? It's probably a small stone from the buckwheat that slipped through quality control.

    Rassolnik is a soup with a pearl barley and pickled cucumbers. Maybe you need to mix it with hot water, that's why it is oversalted and overseasoned.

    • @HayTatsuko
      @HayTatsuko 3 года назад

      I have a feeling you're correct. That looked awfully thick for rassolnik. I've never made it from scratch, but we have a European expatriate store in town that has a very heavy presence of eastern-European stuff, including lots from ex-Soviet states. The rassolnik dry mix I can get there (Yelli brand, I think) is just your typical watery soup when it's made according to the directions on the packet.

      Рассольник is eaten cold. For the summer heat. It uses fresh or pickled cucumbers, which are rich in salt and acid. Therefore, it is called - pickle. From the word brine (leaven)

    They should be good for medical crews who are out on medical calls, or in case if they didn't have time to eat a home cooked meal. I also gotta admit that those tactical rations are high quality. If I had a great reason why I say that is because most people in the medical field should definitely benefit from military grade rations. Especially when it comes from international militaries.

    The box itself doesn't look damaged or rough handled. I suspect an incomplete seal on the caviar. Or possibly overloaded at the factory or could have frozen. This time I think the postal service is not as fault. Gawd it hurt to say that....

    I would've thought that combat rations would be pretty much flavourless (flavours that carry anyway), or not to be strong enough that everyone within 100km can scent you. After watching many of these, I think that I could probably tell who's on the field by the smell or contents or MRE's.

    The Soviet Red Army soldiers of WW2, The Great Patriotic War, would have been gobsmacked amazed to see this 2020 Russian MRE. During WW2 the Soviet Red Army soldier would be happy to receive his regular rations of, brown bread, boiled or roasted potatoes, if not, uncooked, kasha - red beet soup, beans, if available. Maybe once in a great while there might be meat, like canned luncheon meat. But at least the Soviet soldier was being fed. The Red Army and the Soviet government bent over backwards to endure the Red Army got something to eat at least daily. The typical Soviet citizen survived on strict rationing and sometimes had no meals, especially during the first two years of the war. This MRE would seem to be the field ration of a Soviet Red Army general, or even a field Marshall. No Soviet soldier would dare to dream of something as generous and filling as a military MRE like this futuristic Russian field ration.
