Thank you so much. I’ll be 60 this year and this is the first time I have ever grown turnips. I’ve harvested a few and I will try this way. It seems almost like how my parents would make them long ago.
7:32 tells how to take the bitterness out by pouring off the first water after boiling and adding brown sugar after second boiling. Then butter, salt, black or red pepper to taste.
I am sorry you lost your friend. I fixed turnips the way you did and they were so good. I will fix them again. The last 20 mins. I added baby carrots. So good I am going to check out more of your recipes.
Thank you so much for your information! I bought turnips on a whim because i love radish but i have not idea how to prepare them. You have a very sweet energy and dont feel too bad about the bee because nothing ever ends ❤ im sure he's around you in another form
I absolutely love Turnips ♥️ I didn’t know about pouring the water off and adding water back & boil again with Salt, Pepper and Brown Sugar, I will certainly try that next time Yummy!!! Happy Thanksgiving Joy Patricia
I love to eat raw sliced turnips, I also like them cooked. My grandparents had lots of veggies in their diet & I learned to really like them. I think most veggies are an acquired taste.
I just discovered your channel Mamaw Joy and I just want to say how much I enjoyed this content. A turnip at the Whole Foods store brought me to you. I’ve never had a turnip before and I’m in my mid 50s! lol!! I subscribed and liked this video. Looking forward to checking out the rest of your channel. The way you talk and cook reminds me of my late beloved grandmother. I miss her so much. 🕯️ 🥲 but I know I will see her again in Heaven. May God bless you and yours and this channel too! I’m sorry about your little friend. I admire your love and respect for nature. Bees and I don’t get along unfortunately. I was stung as a small child on my inner thigh while just standing there minding my own beeswax lol I think it may have been a wasp though. Now I just give them a wide berth. And I’m ok with that. I do know that honey bees are a very important part of our life cycle. There’s another word but it escapes me at the moment. So I’ll just go with life cycle. I’ve been doing that more and more lately. Darn menopause anyway! 🤭😏 Ecosystem!! I knew it would come to me! 🤭
You so much for subscribing to my channel and thank you so much for your kind comments and I hope I don’t disappoint you in anyway, but I have not felt well and sometimes not even felt like doing any videos, but I didn’t want to not have any to put on, so i’m hoping to do better to feel better and make some better videos soon, so please keep watching and thanks again. I appreciate it.🥰
Your honey bee friend stung because he was mad you left for two weeks. 😳. Thank you for sharing, I have never eaten a turnip. I definitely will try one now.
My grandpa used to keep a bowl of sliced turnips with water in the fridge to snack on throughout the day. That and as a veg in veg soup is about the only way I eat turnips. I may have to try this method at least once :)
I use bacon drippings, red pepper flakes, salt, pepper and a little white sugar in mine.....it's been a good while since I have found any so may have to grown my own....thank you for reminding me..
@@cookingwithmamawjoy631 the thing is...I like that little bitter twang they have AND the greens too...I don't mind even picking greens after the frost has hit them once or twice...mmmmm. I know I'm weird...lol
Very good description of the taste / between a cabbage and radish. My mom who’s gone, Are used to make turnips when I was a child. This brought back so many wonderful memories. We use to have them with mustard greens. Thank you for the tip on rinsing them in cold water after they cook and I did add a dash of meg which I really liked.!!! Thank you for this video . New subscriber. 😊
Thanks for this. My husband came home with a huge bundle of turnips he bought from a guy selling to people at the gas station. But I've never made them before!
Thomas Jefferson wrote that there was no stew (soup) that the addition of a medium turnip didn’t improve. I certainly agree. It mellows all other flavors. Very sublime taste addition. Also, turnips are excellent used in equal amounts sliced turnips to sliced potatoes for scalloped or au gratin potatoes. When I bring this to potluck dinners, there is not a morsel left. Literally.
I like shredding raw turnips into my coleslaw. I also slice them into my fried cabbage. They're good air fried and broiled. I can't think of a bad way to fix them. 😊
It is wonderful with chicken broth, so it would be great with the vegetable broth. I cook mine with equal parts diced potatoes, seasoned with salt, pepper, and butter. You can't sit still and eat 'em 😊😊
So you peel them first. I just got done cooking some with the peel on. Oops. Will have to wait until they cool to see what I do now. I'm a guy, what do I know.
I love turnips but don't mistake turnips for rutabaga which is big and orange and overcooks quite quickly tasting and smelling like rotten cabbage! My mother used turnips one year in the boiled dinner at St Patrick's Day instead of potatoes and my father and my cousin who hate turnips messed them up put some butter on them and ate them all and then they were told you just ate turnips!

Would have been helpful for her to show this step. I kept feeling like I missed something.
Thanks - I always wanted to know how to get the bitterness out. Another suggestion was to add a little sugar, but I don’t like sweet vegetables.
Your my favorite cook thanks for the video
Hi! Your video has inspired me to get some turnips for dinner today! Thank you for such a detailed description of the cooking process.
You are so welcome!

Did not know I liked turnips. And these were very good. Thank you.
Oh I’m so glad you tried them. Now you have a new dish to serve!!🥰
Thank You! I grew a bunch of Turnips, and I wasn't sure how you cook them. Cool to see that they make a potato substitute.
Yummy 😋 Love this recipe ❤ Thank you 😊
In our family we ate rutabagas, so I got curious about how to cook and eat turnips. Thanks for the double boiling trick!
Thank you. I never ate turnip. Excited to try this recipe

@@RobinTrivette-ku4nj thank you!🥰

I use the yellow Rutabagas cooked, mashed & sweetened with brown sugar
My Mom would say old apples were pithy so I know just what you mean dry and mealy. I just grew my first turnips too! Glad I found your channel.

I've always roasted mine in the oven but I will definitely have to try this way!
This is how grandma made them. I think roasted in the oven or air fried is better.
👍
Thanks for the recipe!
My sympathy for the loss of your tiny friend.

I grew turnips for the first time this year.

I even like them raw, lol !
I love turnips! They are better than potatoes. I cook them with (baking powder) dumplings. or -I spray olive oil on turnips & bake them. Really good!
Sounds very good!
Turn up the volume!
you might not have got the whole stinger out they're really difficult but I know this was years ago
what a sweet lady
OMG I am 63 and just learned that turnips are related to cabbage! 🎉😂
I love you! Are you doing well? I’d love to see more of your videos. You remind me of my mawmaw.
Just getting over Covid! Hope to have a video ready soon! Thank you.

What region of the country do you live? You sound a bit like people who come from near where I live. :-)
Southern Illinois
How can we get your recipes
I have been wanting to do a cookbook but. Haven’t got that done. I’ll try to post them from now on.
Real life version of 'Man vs Bee'...😄
Couldn’t see size of chunks you cut.
It doesn’t matter what size but I do bite size. You just cook them till they are tender.
So sorry about your little Bee friend.😪
😮😂❤
Were you never stung as a child?
No that was the first time.

Turnips/Neeps in Scotland aren't bitter we just add salt pepper n butter n mash them...... they taste nothing like cabbage or radishes
That is interesting. Thanks for sharing that with us!🥰
Same here. Love it with haggis.
I would drink the juice water

You lost me with the nutmeg.
I didn’t put in very much and it does add to the taste without being very string. You might just like it.,
@@cookingwithmamawjoy631 I love nutmeg too! I shred zucchini and saute in olive oil, garlic, salt and pepper and then sprinkle nutmeg on it. Delish!
