- Thanks for watching! I hope this helps you with your cat food, your budget, and your ability to do it all yourself and feel proud! It's so cool to be able to do this for our feline families.
Please join in on the home-made cat food conversation. Ask questions. Say something nice. Engage in a way that matters. I'll respond! (unless you're mean or unkind for no reason - don't do that). And, for Heaven sakes, subscribe to my channel and let's make some great things together. :)
Below you'll find a link for a pdf of this cat food recipe - it should help you as you go. But, before that, here's an overview of it.
How to make "homemade cat food" that makes 18-19 pints of super nutritious wet cat food for about $15! I use an Instant Pot to speed up the cooking process then pressure can the food to make it ready for long-term storage in the pantry or cabinet. I only refrigerate the open jar I am using. If you are only using this to feed your cat, it yields enough food for 42 servings of about 250 calories each, about what an average sized adult cat needs to eat each day. We still use some dry cat food, but it is the same stuff that our cats stuck their noses up at and picked at for the last couple of years. I think you'll find this homemade food is much cheaper than even basic dry kibble!
Below is an ingredient list and supply list:
(I've included Amazon affiliate links to some of them, especially the ingredients and equipment I ordered from Amazon myself! And, full disclosure, I would get a small commission if you were to purchase a product through any of the links)
To ensure you have what you need on hand, here is the basic ingredients:
1 Whole Chicken, neck and organ meat reserved to include - I used a 6 lb bird.
White Rice - for this cat food recipe I used 2 cups. Some people use oatmeal, and this is optional, but my cats LOVE white rice. It is easier for them to access the nutrition than brown rice.
Pumpkin - I used canned pumpkin puree. DO NOT use pumpkin pie filling - cats shouldn't eat sugar.
Ground Flax Seed - for this cat food recipe I used 2 cups. This is for protein, fiber, and healthy fats that cats need, and it thickens the food right up - it looks a bit soupy at first. Make sure it is finely ground. Brown or golden flax seed meal will work. Whole flaxseed: amzn.to/3Sugr9t Ground flaxseed: amzn.to/48FE844
Additionally, you'll need the following: 4 Large Eggs, Nutritional Yeast Flakes, Toasted Wheat Germ, Frozen Mixed Vegetables, Ground Turmeric, Black Pepper, Taurine Supplement, and Refined Coconut Oil.
Get the full recipe on my site at www.shawntrautman.com/cooking...
Here is a list of some of the equipment I use in this video along with links to them on Amazon:
16 qt stock pot: amzn.to/495mBlA (this link is for a nicer one than I am using in this video)
Mesh Strainer: amzn.to/3U9hlJs
** Do not use salted or seasoned anything in your cat's food - too much salt really damages their kidneys, and common human seasonings like garlic and onion actually destroy their red blood cells. Yikes! Let me know how it goes! Our current crew of 13 kitties give it 2 paws up with a Meow for extra points!
Thanks, Joanna Хобби
People are free to add carbs and veggies to the meat, but it doesn't change the fact that cats are obligate carnivores. Their digestive tract does not have the enzymes to break down the carbs and veggies. Having active and slim kitties does not add enzymes to their digestive tract. 😻 Of course they won't drop dead but it will shorten their lives. I am the happy owner of many kitties who live(d) beyond the 20 years of age. Just for your info.
Francoise, That is good and correct info on cat carbs. thx for posting. I believe cats make their own vit c for immune system. My kitty lived to 23 years.
You are 100% correct!! Cats are strictly carnivores. Dont use the "they are domesticated now" LOL. Yes, their environment is domesticated BUT their bodies have NOT CHANGED. NO CARB/STARCH AND NO VEGGIES SHOULD PASS YOUR KITTIES LIPS...EVER! I just lost a 23 year old kitty and the one before that was 22 yrs. old. ALL of them were on a raw food diet with supplements. Supplements are super important. I have been a health advocate for pets and a raw food diet for over 30 years. I always tell folks in the beginning of mentoring for a raw food diet this: 'Mimic the wild'. No, they are not in the wild but 'mimic' the diet of when they were in the wild.
Yes, obligate carnivores so they need organ meats too
Many 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🐈❤️🐈⬛
Yes, cats are obligate carnivores.
Also, I feed mine a simple raw diet with added Taurine and sometimes other human-grade quality supplements.
Their natural diet does NOT contain vegetation.
You may see cats chew on a stem of grass or plant, but it is for a type of medicinal purpose, not for nutrition.
In fact, I have never seen any cat out in the wild, cooking it's food . 😂
Agreed, no carbs in any form, whether vegetables or grains.
Still, the ingredients are human grade, and that’s better than the majority of mass produced pet foods…
I make raw to lightly cooked, human grade food for my cats (and one dog). Costs a little more than this recipe, but honestly, not by much.
I am feeling 48 cats total right now and I have IBD and skin conditions. I started your turkey and chicken cat food 1-1/2 years ago, slowly replaced wet cat food with your recipe and I have no cats with skin dermatitis and only have one cat with IBD episodes once a year. I do find that the turkey recipe without flax seed is best for the cat with IBD. They do still get dry cat food, however, they are eating less and seem to be in good health. Thx for your help. My best regards for your time and sharing this information. ps i HAVE DROPPED BY FOOD COSTS BY $200 PER MONTH.
Wow!!! That is just AWESOME!!!! Good for you for caring for 48 cats! I’m glad my cat food recipes are useful. Love that your cats are healthy AND you are saving significant money! Thanks for letting me know, Joanna

What a find on chicken! Best of success with your cooking adventure. I actually use this cat food as gravy on my dogs' food. It's a bit rich and calorie dense as a solo food, but they love it as an extra added to their basic food! Thanks for watching, Joanna

Great job to you both!
i agree!!
So nice to see this. A few years back I pulled my Roxana female tabby out of stage 3 kidney failure by changing her food to home-cooked organic❤. I now cook for my fur daughter Mariam who is a beautiful blend and was a rescue down in Miami she has been eating home-cooked organic food since she's a pup at 10 weeks old. She's one healthy girl. Your purpose is profound I love it❤ no animals should eat processed food. Human grade food only I'm a big fan of organic. Home cooked is best Namaste everyone
Did you grind the bones into your cat food as well??
I love that you were able to do so much for your fur babies. I agree that home-cooked is best, and if you can source and afford organic, is always amazing! Thanks for watching and chiming in, Joanna
I didn't grind the bones initially, but in the last three years I've started grinding them and incorporating them. The cats seem to enjoy the food just as well. Hope that helps, Joanna
yes, it works especially for kidney issues.... b/c the canned foods add salt, which neither cats nor dogs can actually taste! all a plot to keep us and our majestic animal relations hooked.
13 Kitties? Are you a voluntary rescue? WOW. Good on you!!
Thank you! I feed 10 cats 10 cans per day so it's very expensive to buy enough cat food.
Wow! Glad I could help. Thanks for watching, Joanna
Absolutely hope this helps with All that !!! 😺
And its not even canned FOOD. Our food industry has been taken over by mad scientists, greedy corporations and psycho into eugenics. Hope you're making your cats food at home❤
Hi Joanna: A few observations -- all positive. 1. You have a beautiful kitchen. 2. Your kitchen is the size of my NYC apartment (lol). You are so fortunate. 3. I am sure you have been doing this canning for your cats for years. 4. I am also sure you have made every mistake in the book. 5. You are an excellent teacher and thus you have passed on all the reasons to not make the same mistakes. 6. Your effort to keep your cats healthy has (I am sure) saved you a bundle in vet fees 7. What else can I say? This is a PERFECT tutorial and I will strive to emulate you on a much smaller basis. My future cats will be very happy. Thank you so so much for sharing all your knowledge. I have a cat, Thomas, who is half way through his 24th year. Right now his primary food is a blend of ground beef, heart, liver and kidney, raw. He is quite spoiled and has gotten very picky but I would like to see him get more variety. Going to give this a try.
Wow well done you! That’s a very ripe age even for a cat! Great cat parenting here

I wish you would post the exact recipe I’d like my cat to live 20 + years like yours
@@fancieSdim No recipe needed. I buy it ready to go from U S Wellness meats on line. It is grass fed and finished meats. Occasionally, I feed pureed calf liver and wild caught salmon. The salmon is usually my left overs. I offer a high quality kibble for his snacking but this is more like a treat.

This. was. perfect! I just needed to learn how to make healthy food for my cats and I ended up learning how to use a pressure canner, insta pot and a blender on steroids! Loved how you shared your past learning opportunities and even general canning tips. I didn't know you were suppose to leave off the rings! First time here and I will definitely be back.
I clicked for the cat food ingredients. I stayed for the canning tutorial. I've been wanting to home can meats/meals for years, but have been too afraid. She was so thorough explaining the process that I feel like I'm finally ready to take the leap from water bathing to pressure canning!!
Even if only 10% of cat food is as fresh as this, you drastically reduce disease. Bravo! Personally, as a hybrid raw/fresh/wet feeder, I don't feed my cats kibble due to the carbs & carcinogenic heating process used to make kibble. Also, careful with too much bone, 10% of the batch weight is the balanced amount. Too much causes constipation. Thanks for the canning tutorial also. Best way to store it, rather than plastic which leaches chemicals into the food. Beef gelatin powder has great benefits to prevent arthritis in cats but also gives the food a pate consistency. ❤ 🐈 ❤
My cat loves pate. I will have to try adding in the beef gelatin. Could you please tell me at what step should I add that in. Thank you!
Great video- I learned so much even though I am an old still working chef. My three kitties are 19/19 and 20. I’ve not blended meat or used the bones (great idea to do so) bc I shred the chicken then use bone broth. and alternately use chopped beef, chicken livers, organ meats, turkey, salmon as well as plain pumpkin and green peas, apple also and eggs I boil and chop. Always serve with a drizzle of coconut oil. Chefs love to chop, lol- it’s a meditative thing and drizzle!) Mine seem to enjoy the variety and textures. I appreciate all of the explanations of how to safely use equipment and the nutritional values of your ingredients. I’ll start adding nutritional yeast❤. You’re an excellent teacher and chef’s kiss for your beautiful kitchen!
Wow, what a kitchen ! And our oven and blender !!!!! Wow! I love the kitchen!!!! Wow wow wow !!!! we don"t have them in Eastern Europe....I tried to prepare cat food, just simple chicken meat with vegetables, without pumpkin or coconut or other exotic ingredients, just regular chicken soup, blended, of course without bones......the disgust on my cats faces! I have 8 and not even one touched it. So, back to boiling fish, chicken and canned food!...my cats told me directly that I am not much of a cook
Just give them your home canned meat without grain and veggies. Open a jar and add cat vitamins, then blend well.
Added grains and veggies will overwork the pancreas, leading to pancreatitis, diabetes, and pancreatic cancer.
@@judyd5681 Hi! What brand of cat vitamins do you use? Thanks.
Only you don’t have a kitchen like this

Thank you as well for explaining the instant pot and pressure canning.
diatomaceous earth (food grade) is also highly nutritious. Can be used for flea control as well.
Fascinating. I'll have to dig into that a bit more! Thanks for sharing, Joanna
DE for internal parasite removal. Buy Food grade. also use for humans.
We add it to our raw meat cat food to prevent intestinal parasites.
Yes diatomaceous earth actually cured my German Shepherd from worms. I had tried so many things to get rid of it, even wormwood, but it wasn't until I switched to diatomaceous earth that I was able to get it under control.
DE is good for so many types of pets as well as drying my cement barn floor !

I am on keto/carnivore and so as my cats. In nature, they only eat meat. That's how it should be. The cat food I buy for them have no carbs nor fillers. I will try your recipe minus the bad stuff I mentioned above. Thank your fo sharing your recipe.❤❤❤
People seem very confused about what the term 'obligate carnivore' means. It doesn't mean they can ONLY eat meat. It means that they need meat to get all their nutrients. They can eat a diet free of grains and still meet their nutrient requirements. But carbohydrate sources are a good source of essential nutrients that aren't present in high in amounts in animal products. Grains are the best source compared to other products like potatoes or peas that are less nutrient-dense.
Legumes and pulses have also been associated with a fatal heart disease in dogs and cats. It is also a rich source of fiber which also isn't considered an essential nutrient but provides many benefits. So no, while it isn't necessary, it is best to feed a diet that is inclusive of grains. Here are resources from board-certified veterinary nutritionists and FEDIAF (Europe's pet food safety organization): - vetnutrition.tufts.edu/2021/07/the-role-of-carbohydrate-in-pet-foods/ - europeanpetfood.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/FEDIAF_Carbohydrates-OnlineK.pdf

I am also on disability allowance , and i want to provide the best food for them and i make sacrifices, but to me thats not important, as much as i want them to be healthy and happy, i have been feeding wet cat food, and once a day or less dry cat food, but they are getting sick from the canned and i am starting to cook real meat , chicken breast, so with the money i spend a month on wet canned food, i will use to make my own and it will be about the same if not less and much better for them, i am learning how to do this thanks to you Joanna😊

Great recipe for the cooked portion of a cats diet.
I feed my cat 75% raw and 25 % processed.
The processed portion is wet food and dry biscuits ( kibble).
I will try your recipe as a healthy replacement for the wet food.
The oldest and healthiest cats are the ones who have been fed a mostly raw diet.
Raw is best as ( firstly it is NATURAL and how they eat in the wild) and secondly no nutrients have been lost in the cooking process - thirdly, the animal is able to receive all the live enzymes that are readily available in raw meats.
Cats are fussy creatures by nature so i do incorporate some cooked wet food to mix it up but my intention is to always stick to the 75% raw Rule.
This way your cat will ALWAYS be the best they can be.
Their teeth, joints coat and organs remain in tip top condition and the lifespan is well into their 20s.
Welcome to my channel! Thank you for chiming in. It sounds like you have found a way of feeding your cats that is working well for you and your feline crew! I love reading things like that. All the best, Joanna
Instant pot won't allow you to open whilst pressurised. The safety features lock the lid. Also L00:00 stands for lapsed time (time since cooking ended). You do not need to switch off keep warm or pressure cancel, keep warm does not kick in until it has completely depressurised. Also you only need 1/2 cup water max for pressure cooking.
Thank you for the deemo! Reminds me of what my mom used to do.
Homemade is good stuff. You are very welcome!
Your video was wonderful, thank you❤
You are very welcome, and thank YOU for watching and commenting, Joanna
Thanks for sharing this video. I think you're on to something in a variety of ways.
One huge thing is trust. Trust in what you feed your pet. Food quality and safety.
I knew people years ago whose cats were poisoned and died because the (USA and canada) store bought cat food they'd trusted for years had switched to using ingredients from China (or was now manufactured in China) and one or more ingredients had been doctored with some sort of plastic or chemical so it would pass some protein test or something.
I recall feeling fearful of owning a cat or a dog again because I believed the propaganda that only store bought food is "safe" for pets. I thought I wouldn't be able to feed the cat or dog an appropriate, safe diet. Videos like yours are vital.
I've had to rent for years, unfortunately, and every landlord has had a strict _no pets_ policy. I've also been struggling financially for a long time, so I can't afford vet care, litter, toys, etc for a cat. But, if I'm ever blessed with a cat in my life again, I'm going to make the cat's food. I've saved this video on a couple of my playlists. Thank you.
Bless you. I shall pray that your wish is granted.

I think you're making your own cat is a terrific idea. My problem is the rice. I've been canning for years and would never add rice to any jar. No pasta or any any type of rice. I'm going to try your cat food, but no rice.
I understand completely. I think your cat food will be great if made without the rice. Rice is a potential risk factor in canning as it can inhibit heat transfer into the center of the food inside the jar. I cook the rice prior to the canning process and use long processing time because of this. The interior of the pressure canner easily achieves the safety zone temperature for destroying bacterial spores (like botulism), but the processing time is what allows the heat to transfer within the jars. Now, in the instance that spores survive the canning process and grow into a bacterial colony that can make people sick, there are signs, like bulging jar lids and foul odor when the jar is opened. Basically, the signs of bad food. This can happen with any foods that you can, and is one of the inherent risks of canning food, period. Again, thank you for watching, Joanna

Thanks Joanna! I am preparing my first batch today. I just put everything in the pressure canner. Mine was a bit thicker than yours so I hope the kitties will still like it. If not, I am sure my German Shepherd will enjoy it as a topper until I get things right! 😊
I hope it turned out well - this cat food is the most frustrating food I pressure can. If you find a bunch of your jars didn't seal, I would empty the unsealed jars back into the stock pot, add water so you have a more liquid consistency, and then pressure can again. Heaven knows I've had to do that. I agree on your dog enjoying it. I call it "sauce" or "gravy" for my dogs, and they absolutely snarf everything it touches. Best of success, Joanna
Did your cats eat it? I have tried everything under the sun to feed my cats and they just don't want to eat anything the only thing I haven't tried is making my own food I've had other people make it and I've gotten it shipped but my cat won't eat anything he was just diagnosed with cancer so I'm trying to feed him perfectly and go through all that so I'm wondering did your cat eat this?
@@coredadventure1 ohhh… my heart is heavy for you. Watching a pet suffer is terrible. To answer your question, yes, all 13 of my cats absolutely devour this food, but they aren’t picky. I've tried everything I know except for making my own food but yeah they just started being picky in the last year or so yes watching him with cancer has been my worst nightmare it has pretty much ruined my life because it consumes me mentally and emotionally because I care about him so much but he's still hunts and catches thanks but he just doesn't eat it's really strange and crazy
Thank you for so much detail using the instant pot, bought the ninja 15 in 1 and it's still in the box I'm scared of it 😂 hopefully now I won't be so scared.
Have courage! Your Ninja is a great appliance! Once you start using it and incorporating it into your routine you will just love it. Pressure cooking is certainly a technique where care needs to be taken, but it is fabulous for saving time and providing consistent results. I use my Instant Pot at least 5 times a week (though usually on human food). I'm so glad my video was helpful! Thanks for watching, Joanna
Don't be scared lol.... Just Open, Open, Open... And life gets easier!!!! 💯
Don't be scared. (I had mine for a while, too, lol. ) The new ones today have lots of safety measures built in, unlike the steel ones our parents used 😂The two things to remember is Don't force it open and watch out for the steam when you release the pressure manually. Go for it, you will be fine 😊
😊 I would like to see the finished product once it's all cool
Wow im here for cat food now i come back with canned food knowledge 😂 thankyou
You're welcome! I wrapped both into this video as I had so many questions about that on my older chicken cat food video. Joanna
Thankyou for this recipe and information. Appreciate the time you have put into showing others how to feed there kitties a better diet! What size instapot are you using?
You are very welcome. It’s my pleasure. I’m using a 6 quart Instant Pot. Thanks for watching, Joanna

Hi Joanna
What would this process be with a regular stove top pressure cooker?
Thank you for your hard work and dedication.
@@jude7321 watch my turkey cat food videos (2 part series). I cook the turkey down on the stovetop in that one. Thanks, Joanna
❤😺
I have to tell you, I made this twice and my cats hated it. The local feral cats loved it but not my beasts no 😂. I made one batch with chicken eggs pumpkin green beans and tuna ( 👎) and one batch without the fish as I suspected they didn’t like it (but also 👎). I’m still going to try other recipes as they seem to prefer the meat flavours of canned cat food.
I’m old. Coconut oil not in my family history. We raised a hog for butchering every year on our family homestead. The best fat for us was lard rendered from the hog, organically raised before anyone labeled it that. Any reason to avoid substituting lard for the coconut oil?
Your comment made me smile. Living in rural Appalachia for the last few years, I do, in fact, have a pretty decent understanding of what you are talking about. What you can purchase in the grocery store is a far cry from the lard you were raised cooking with. I use coconut oil as it is available to me, and has a triglyceride structure I can get behind. That being said, if I were fully homesteading, including raising and butchering livestock like pigs or beef, I would absolutely render and utilize that fat for all sorts of things, cooking, soap, and candles included. I've found single ingredient plant-based products are closer to what they say they are, especially if they are specialty. It's hard to mix in cheap oil to coconut oil - even refined, coconut oil has specific properties that make it solid at most room temperatures and melt rapidly at anything above, unlike butter and most other vegetable fats. I'm not sure if I answered your question, but I hope my comments give you insight into my reasoning! Cheers, Joanna
I commend her for making it herself. I did Raw chicken thighs ground with bones supplemented (I think I added vit E), liver & heart occasionally (no beef). Froze it. 4 healthy happy long living cats (19-22). Loved their food, never threw it up, no stool issues, no behavior issues, beautiful coats and perfect weight. No diseases, no kidney disease! Doing dog diet first time, a year now for a 9 yr old Doxin. More complex formula w organs, seeds, fruit, veggies, etc. Bulk is mostly raw chicken cut up with whole bone, oily fish/sardines once a week. She was an elderly sickly sausage of a dog, now trim and puppy like. No kibble. Belueve not supposed to alternate cuz they build diff digestive enzymes for kibble vs real meat diet. I dont can because I dont want that heat. Because of her weight, I measure amount of food by % of weight stepping down to target wt. Lost half her weight with zero complaints . Dogs & cats have a high tolerence to chicken diseases, our food supply is decent, contamination is usually on plants so wash em and feces which we cant handle, but they can and do eat it to change their gut bacteria or a treat. Highly recommend the effort. Doesnt have to be expensive but takes research and time. I enjoy the task and love watching my dog wag her tail and make choices as she's eating.
Hi, can you freeze this cat food instead of canning it?? Thanks for the video, very informative
13 cats you said? wow!! I would like to see a couple cats eating this with gusto.
I’m looking for How long to process pint jars. 10lbs, 75min. Found it! Thank you!
Glad you found it! Thanks for watching, Joanna
Toe, If I may, 75 minutes pressure cooking is for RAW meat, not meat that's already been cooked in instant pot. There's a lot of bad info in this vid, sorry.
Would brown rice be healthier ? Also, what brand dry food do you feed ?
Just found your channel today. So been watching few of your cat food ones. Ty ❤😊
Where can i find this recipe all written out with measurments plz 😊
There is a link in the description that will let you download a PDF of the recipe from my website! Thanks for watching, Joanna
I have an instant pot, my buttons are a bit different. And I also have a fancy Foodi Ninja. I often use both at the same time. Does the 2T. of a c vinegar change the flavor of the broth or meat? We have 18 cats now, we recently lost one at 18 to pneumonia, and 2 in a fire when we lost my mom's house. This recipe sounds pretty good. I like that you covered Taurine as it is important for urinary issues.
👍👍👍👍👍👍
I love this education. Ive tried making cat and dog food and found it was very tedious.......and didnt stretch very far.... the dogs loved it, the cats were not impressed.
Wow, i am screeching for this type video for a long time. Thank you so much
. just one question i Have, if we store them without refreezed, for how much time it will be ok?? Plesse reply
You are welcome! This food can be stored in the fridge for a week. Hope this helps, Joanna
Thanks for sharing this. Can this recipe be frozen if I don’t have a pressure canner?
My cat is picky but when I rescued I made a chicken soup the cats loved it this one will not eat chicken but loves fish and shrimp won't eat certain fish or crab either but eats a little avocado
My cat has allergies and severe sensitive tummy so no chicken no potatoes for him. Lamb only works
Hey Joanna- one more quick question. About how much of a serving do you put out of each cat? And do you feed this canned recipe once or twice a day? I also keep kibble out -❤️
Hey Joanna! What size pressure cooker is that? I’m really interested in this recipe and will prob buy one. Great video! Tyvm
Hi! It is a 6 quart pressure cooker. It happens to be an Instant Pot, but there are several name brand and off brand electric pressure cookers in that size range that would work.
Thank you for this recipe! Can't wait to try it. I have a question though. I don't have a high speed bkender, I doubt it would grind the bones. If I remove most of the large bonescwould it still meet nutritional needs?
I pick out the bones in my older chicken cat food video. If you have a small food processor or regular blender, it should handle the smaller bones just fine. Also, cooking the carcass even longer will further soften the bones (as well as leech the minerals into the cooking water, which we use in the food.) My advice: pick the big meat off and pressure cook the carcass for another 35-40 minutes making sure there is some liquid in the pot. The bones should easily snap in your fingers so a small food processor or blender should work. Thanks for watching, Joanna
What is the black pepper for?
This is an amazingly helpful video, thank you!! Do you think this recipe would be fine for kitties with sensitive stomachs? I habe three siamese babies and two of them are senstive to certain dry foods. Do you happen to know a recipe for more sensitive cats?
If they are sensitive to chicken, I have a similar turkey cat food recipe, but I don’t use an Instant Pot. I will be uploading a salmon recipe in the next few weeks… Hope this helps, Joanna
Can we freeze instead of can it?
Question: if you add a cooked rice is there any reason to cook at all after it's all blended?
Hi Joanna, thank you for your recipes and great explanations. Thank your husband, too, for his great camera work. ;-)
I have a question as I'm starting to make my own cat food now, (as in today,) using your chicken video and recipe from a year ago. I would love to use the instant pot, and am curious what size that pot is that takes an entire roasting bird? I have five cats, all seniors, and I want to get away from the canned food and reduce the amount of kibbles they eat. Canned cat food prices have just skyrocketed, and the quality of the food (depending on which brand you get,) is questionable. I've had cats get various tummy and other digestive issues over the last two years, and have had enough. Since I already make my dog food, I didn't think it would be too much of an issue to start with the cat's food. AND I really want a way to cook that chicken faster, so am looking at a larger instant pot.
Thanks for the help, and keep up the very informative videos!
I use this 6 quart Instant Pot amzn.to/3x0VGdl, and it fits a chicken nicely. I also use my pressure cooker at least five times a week to cook for humans, and I'm typically cooking for 6 to 10 people. If I am doing something like beans or a main dish, it allows me to cook for a meal with just a bit of leftovers. For smaller groups it is great for chilis and stews. I tend to use it for the slower cooking ingredients and then add it in to the larger soup with noodles and quick-cooking veggies. I saw that at least Instant Pot makes an 8 quart pressure cooker which looks nice amzn.to/4bIJBZp, but my 6 quart definitely does the job. I absolutely agree on the pet food prices! Once you get the hang of using a pressure cooker you're going to be regularly saying "I bet I could pressure cook that and it would be even better!" Thanks for watching, Joanna
Where did you get your instant pot inner pot with stainless steel
do u keep the same flame on pot???
I have a cat that needs to be on urinary care food, since she once had gotten struvite crystals. I think what makes the food “urinary care” is lower magnesium. Im wondering if I can do this and it will be ok for her.
Would a food processor work as well? Love this btw!
Yes - just make sure to work in small batches and add liquid to keep the motor from working too hard. Thanks for watching, Joanna
My question also.
Can I Frozen instead ? Thanks I love you Chanel 😍
You absolutely can! I have a video on that right here: ruclips.net/video/qD-MNO5DFFk/видео.htmlsi=D-pXA2gCFr7SaYny Hope it helps, Joanna
How do I make cat food I don't have a presence cook and jars and how do you make dry food and can you freeze it instead of jars
I don't have a pressure cooker but i am going to assume that a slow cooker would do the same becuaee i would like to try this for my cats
I heard cooking meat releases the taurine they need.
I always do raw tuna, salmon, (canned as a backup), & lamb usually a few times a week as a supplement to their dry food.
They will tolerate chicken, but prefer the other.
I buy the brand Orijen. Always, as no other brand compares, so far.
If the first 5 ingredients in a dry cat food are meal, peas or lentils, then it’s not that good for them. Also canola oil is another sneaky ingredient that isn’t good for their digestion, as well as mine.
I’ve been feeding Raw to my cats and dogs for over 20 years. For cats, rice and veggies are nothing but fillers. They get very little if any nutrition actually from them. If you absolutely feel like you need to put carbs in there to stretch the recipe to save money then at least go with oatmeal versus rice.
I can respect the fact that you do not want to feed Raw. But you are putting your cats. Great risk by feeding cooked bone. Yes, I know it’s pulverized, but it’s still cooked first. Greatly increases the risk of Val obstruction and impaction. He would be better off, feeding a bone supplement, such as the four leaf Rover brand, and there are other good brands also. If your eggs are farm raised and not bought at the store, you can also grind up the shells, but they will need more calcium than just that but that is also a good option. The only cooked bones you should feed would be from canned mackerel, or canned salmon, or canned sardines.
The ingredients of this recipe would be more appropriate for dogs. You don’t need to add a taurine supplement if you’re feeding good amount of protein with the meat but also heart has a lot of taurine. Chicken hearts, beef, heart, etc. Always better to go with natural ingredients versus supplements. The cooking process deplete some of the nutrition, but not a lot. it is still 100 times better than kibble or canned.
Thanks for watching and chiming in. My dogs get this recipe as a gravy added to their food. They love it, but it is too fat and calorie dense for them. I'm glad you've found a method for feeding your cats and dogs that works for you! Thanks again for watching, Joanna
Thank you for the recipe and video! I want to make it for our 10 cats. Where do you buy the other ingredients such as taurine, nutritional yeast flakes, etc? Is there a link for those? Thank you!
Health food store or online.
I am wondering if you have anything that would work with cats that develop bladder crystals? I want to start feeding these to my cats but one gets super jealous of the other when I give one wet food and the other one has to eat the prescription dry/Cat food.
Thanks sooo much for this! I’m so dubious about grinding those bones for 5hem, but I WILL try it! Have been wanting to make their food for awhile…
Where do you source your taurine please?
I ordered mine on Amazon. If your food processor or blender doesn't handle the bones easily, I would put them back in the pressure cooker for another round of pressure cooking (with some water of course). Best of success with your cooking venture! Thanks for watching, Joanna
Amazon has it.
