Mojave Road Trail with the San Diego Jeep Club

- Mojave Road. On 9 April 2016 we set out with the San Diego Jeep Club to conquer the infamous Mojave Road for what would end up being one of the most epic Jeep overlanding adventures we had every been on.
Our overland journey started with an overnight stay in a Laughlin, Nevada Casino Hotel. Early on Saturday morning, we got the group together, had a drivers meeting and set out on the Christmas Tree trail. The end of Christmas Tree trail ends near a gas station that we all topped off our tanks, air downed our tires and drove 5 miles to the start of the Mojave Road.
The Mojave Road was beyond expectations. Truly, we envisioned this road to be open and desolate, but the terrain was ever changing, the scenery was amazing and with the crazy Thunderstorms, things got interesting.
Our journey was suppose to be a 2 day adventure, but due to heavy rain we were forced to take an unplanned detour. Our original plan was to cross Soda Lake and set up camp in the early afternoon.
The rain had turned Soda Lake into a mud pit that was impassable and we were forced to navigate several hours around the lake which was very challenging. Eventually, we made our way to the Afton Campground for a restful night.
“This famous trail is the Mojave Road, one of the early routes that brought American pioneers to California. This trail is unique in that for most of its 138 mile stretch it is in much the same condition as the pioneers would have found it, and a lot of the trail passes through country that is virtually unchanged since prehistoric times. The road bisects the Preserve, wandering from waterhole to waterhole, and is mostly a 4-wheel-drive trail.”

I returned to the Mojave in 2018 and what an amazing adventure I had, you can check out the full video from that trip here: ruclips.net/video/_Q7fkJPZg1I/видео.html
Dang Brad! videos have come along way!
Brad and Jordan, I can't thank you both enough for creating such a wonderful video. Thanks so much.
+John Mantey It's something we really enjoy doing, our pleasure!
+TrailRecon We hope team Kowitz can make it to Moab with us in August :-)
Hey Brad, I've been a Challenger guy since '09 when they came back, but your channel has about converted me to being a full blown jeep person. Keep up the awesome content!
Hot Rods and Jeeps.... I love them both! Thank you!
Brad and Jordan, you both have done such a magnificent job with this video. On behalf of all the members of the San Diego Jeep Club, we thank you.
+SanDiego JeepClub (SDJC) Thank you! The SDJC has allowed us to have some amazing adventures and we are honored to be part of the club!
I really enjoyed this video so much. Ive only taking Ruby out once back in October of last year but due to covid everyone is not wanting to go out as much. I have major upgrades for Ruby in 2 weeks making her more capable to run the Rubicon trail without worry. Iam so hooked on offroading.
Thank you TrailRecon for all your videos.
Ealane 🦋
This is a high-quality video and great sound tracks with it! I need to add the Mojave Trail to my ever growing list of trails to visit!
I so want to get a jeep, which style unknown at this time. But you all make it look so Awesome... This is great enteraniment especially with this virus controlling us right now. Stay safe everyone. Keep on WHEELING..
Right on...I always love seeing different terrain than I'm used to. Neat country. :) Happy Trails.
+Monster Jeep Thank you! The terrain on the Mojave was amazing!
Loving your videos and adventures. I'm new to the Jeep life and I'm learning a ton from your videos. Thanks!
Thank you and welcome to the Jeep community!
Glad I had the chance to watch, another great TrailRecon video
Thank you!
Awesome video! Got my first Jeep jku a couple months ago, love it!
Such an awesome video! I really like the attitude of the people in your group. I hate groups where you feel like you have to impress others to even fit in. We all have to start somewhere. Keep the videos coming!
+The Bearded Jeeper Thanks man, it really is just a good down to earth group of folks.
love that trail..great video..
+Cameron Kimball Thank you!!
Great job! That looks like an awesome ride.
Great video. Love the production style!
+JEEPARMY USA Thanks man!!

Love the orange jeep with neon Antenas
That's Tail-End Charlie's Jeep, one of the first rig walk around videos we did. You can check it out here: ruclips.net/video/5HuCHvxIGok/видео.html
Great video Brad, as usual.
+John West Thank you, my son gets most of the credit for this video!
Awesome run. GREAT video good job.
+Bubbas Garage Vlogs Thank you Sir!!
Nice video! Lots of cool stuff to see on that trail.
Great vid! 👍
More ZJ please!.... Love that rig!
Wow I have to say your video production skills have greatly improved since back when this video was done. Nice work on making great videos.
Wow you did it all in one day! We just finished the trail 2 weeks after you did. We hit some rain but nothing like you experienced. We spent 4 days and nights on the trail and loved every minute of it. Thanks for sharing.
+mobiltec The plan wasn't to do the whole trail in a day, but soda lake messed that up for us. I really want to go back and take my time and do a 3-4 day trip and just soak it all in.
+TrailRecon OH you must do that. This was my second trip and we did a bunch of off shoot roads and trails to see other stuff. I would need to go back at least 4 more times to see it all. Seems the more you look the more you find.
Great video... Im looking to do it on in January... do you think I'll be ok with 31 inch tiers with 2.5 lift?
Looks like great time!! I wish upstate ny wasn't so far!
+amtrobia Thanks, it was an amazing trip!
Amazing Video! One of these things is not like the others @ 5:10 & 9:51 & 10:26 LOL! What's the Penny Tree and The Mail Box?
+Rocky X TV HAHA! The Penny Tree and Mail Box are random spots in the middle of nowhere that I believe have been created by fellow travelers.
You seriously broke the mold with this video, absolute favorite! Keep on Jeepin on! #JeepVideoGuy approves this BADASSERY! #JeepArmyUSA #JeepMafia #CrawlTV #JeepCommunity
Thanks brother! It made filming easy being in such an awesome place with great folks. Best Jeep experience to date!!
Very cool! Looks like it was a lot of fun. What was the issue with the silver JK at 4:40? Front drive shaft?
+JeepSolid Yep, the front drive shaft was making some pretty good grinding noises, so they ended up pulling it and doing the rest of the run in 2 wheel drive, which was no problem.
Great video.
Thank you!
cool music for the video man, love The video
Thank you, it was an epic trip!
nice video as always
+Jeeps&Armas Thank you!!
Love this Trail I will be moving to Monte Rio California in july coming from Utah do you know of any jeep clubs i can join
I hope you showed those southern California boys how to drive in the rain! :-)
The rain really made this trip more adventurous and as an added bonus, kept the dust down!
As a new JK Jeep owner I have been looking at everything Jeep on youtube. Ran into your video this evening. I must say, that your video is extremely well done. At first I balked at having to sit through 13 minutes of video, but yours was so outstanding that I ended up wanting more! I liked the friendliness of your group and the safety precautions (bypassing Soda Lake). I was especially interested in the modifications, and your group seems to have run the gamut from lifts to tire racks to extra lights and winches. Now I know what I would like to add to my Jeep. I do not understand the one "thumbs down" dislike...I guess there is always a jealous person out there.
One question....what happened to that jeep that had something repaired on the drive shaft? Impressed how there was sufficient help and mechanical know-how to remedy the problem. I am going to your channel now to look at some of your other videos. Thanks!!!
Thank you and congrats on your new JK! The San Diego Jeep Club is genuinely just a great group of folks and I am proud to be apart of their team! Thanks for watching!
I’ve done this trail a couple of time(HWY 95 thru Afton canyon))and don’t remember the section across the the side of the hill during the downpour. What part of the trail was this at?.
hey, that neighborhood y'all started from looks familiar .....Redhawk in Temecula? :)
Cool video. Looks like a decent trail. What was the reason for that drive shaft breaking? Was it an obstacle in the trail?
Fun video man!! Great music too
Thanks! You can check out my latest 2018 adventure across the Mojave here: ruclips.net/video/_Q7fkJPZg1I/видео.html
@@TrailRecon already watched! I have my youtube on alert whenever you post a video sir! Rah
what type of radios are used to communicate?
I was out here the same weekend. Saw some of your group at the mailbox.
+tannerrrr54 Awesome! It was probably the lead group you ran into that was running a bit faster than the main group. Did you guys cross Soda Lake?
+TrailRecon no we did not even try. Our group was mostly stock SUV/truck. Stayed at carruthers canyon on Friday night...great spot. Planned on staying Saturday night also but the forecast was saying lots of rain and thunderstorms. We hit Kelbaker road and went north through the "closed road" lol. You could tell a lot of other people had done the same thing.
Seems narrow in some places. Could a Bronco fit?
Would love to do this!
East coast guy here... but remember Jeep Club, They throw ya in jail for having to much fun!
what is that sound at 1:24?
Nice video.
Thank you, it was a great adventure. We can't wait to do it again and take a few days and really soak it in next time.
Has anyone ever tooken a yj through this road? Will it make it? Its mechanically reliable
Very nice video, too bad you couldn't cross Soda Lake it can still be a problem three weeks after a rain.
Thanks! I'm looking forward to going back again soon.
Where exactly is that trail? Next time can you put a map up of where you guys are at?
I'm not a fan of jeeps but great video! We run this trail with 2wd Toyota trucks all day. 2 Mojave runs under my belt. check the book
tonthat91 how do the 2wd do on the trails? I just bought a 3rd gen 4runner but it's 2wd and I've been wondering what trails I can take it to.
Great video and looks like a fun group to ride with. Been on the Mojave trail many times but never seen water that deep. Where was the crossing? That section climbing to Lanfair Valley is rough not in the rain! Too bad the National Park Service closed that section after the rainfall...must have been some heavy rain. On a side note, what kind of camera are you using? Great work.
It was a great group of folks to wheel this trail with. The water crossing was towards the end of the trail as we got close to the Afton Camp Ground. I believe it was the Mojave River that we waded through. The rain made kept the dust down, so we enjoyed it. I use a few cameras, but mostly my Canon T3i. Thanks for watching!
Loved your video! We just returned from the Mojave Road Trail 2 weeks ago! The trip was amazing! My favorite part was the Lava tubes! We were the only Jeep from our group. We ran with pre-runners, one of them belonging to my son! We've done a a trip with them in the past up in California City and recently Ocotillo Wells with friends who also have Jeeps! Are all your club members from the San Diego area? My husband and I live in Riverside and we are thinking of joining a club but not sure if we should join locally or if it even matters!!
Thank you! It is such an amazing trail. I really wish I would have got more video of the lava, it really was spectacular! I hope to do this trail again next year.
Curious, why does a trailer need AT tires if they are just being pulled?
You can see in the video the narrow, wet, muddy section he was pulling the trailer though, having some nice grip on those tires probably helped it from not slide sideways.
89 Alpha parts of this trail have jagged rocks especially by the lava tubes. And all terrain tires typically have 4-10 ply sidewalls and 12-15 32nds of beefy tread that will just kick the rocks out... all and all it's more reliability and peace of mind.
..if you're pulling a TT off road..the beefier tread helps a lot with gripping rock, etc...city tires aren't gonna cut it...
Very nice. What broke on the Jeep? How did the non lifted silver jeep do? Did you do this in one day? Were you guys on CB OR VHF radios? Thanks for the help 10 of us are getting ready to do this. manly in non lifted Jeeps as we are all old.
His front drive shaft was making all kinds of noise, so we removed it. All the Jeep did very well, the trail is Jeep stock capable. We did it in one day, but that wasn't the plan. We were all on Ham radios. I hope to go back someday and spend more time exploring. Spectacular trail... enjoy!
Thank you;
Stock driveshaft on a lifted jeep doesn't do so well! He was able to finish the trail in 2wd?
Never a CJ, do you have realjeepaphobia ? Great video, looks like a lot of fun.
well done
Thank you!
What is the name of the trail part on 3:44? I was out there on March 18th to 20th. Good Video.
+theschuntz That section of the trail was a couple hours in along the road, I'm not sure if it had a name. It wasn't a steep or long climb, but the rain sure made it seem sketch. Thanks for watching!
live pretty close to this, would love to join you guys in my wrangler!
I can't wait to be able to this trip again someday! You are welcome not come down to San Diego and wheel with the club anytime...check them on Facebook for future runs.
Are this runs with public or club members only and if with public? How to I get invited for next run
Was that Raptor with you guys or was he just tagging along?
His Jeep was in the shop, so we let him bring his Raptor.
I really need to take a trip out west. The trails in Louisiana aren't great and are few and far between
Come on out, there trails are calling you!
TrailRecon lol my jeep needs a lot of work before it's ready for that kind of trip
you guys had a raptor in your group? i need to find a group to do this with my bronco lol
It was crazy how fast he was able to cruise down the trail in that Raptor.
Watch out for the Legion.
What was wrong with the jeep you guys were fixing
+tom martin Front drive shaft was making some terrible noise, he finished the run in 2 wheel drive.
Thanks for the video. I’d rather no disco music though.
..best jeep @ 11:32..
no music please
Drug deal gone wrong 6:32
I was in my 4Runner and this Jeep gang rolled up on me and pulled me out of my Toyota and beat my ass and pried the badging off my 4Runner and peed on me and then they said, "WRONG HOOD, BITCH" and then they got in their Jeeps and took off.
LOL
By the way...this music is awful! Sounds like you spent too many nights in Pilipino bars in your Navy days.
Please no more music, would rather hear conversation, and or anything but.
