this is a great description. Very professional videos, but we still have Roman having fun like a kid on Christmas morning during that last 1/4 mile run. Awesome
The front locker didn't come into play on the razor rocks. He high centered with the Mojave you didn't on you're second try with the Rubicon. Different lines give different results.
Nice review but that Mojave needs to be tested on desert roads with whoops vs the Rubicon to see how different it really is. Send them both my way and I will be happy to help!
I would buy the Mojave because both are too long to rock crawl but you can find open spaces to have fun off road. Plus the better suspension on the Mojave should provide a better ride no matter what surface.
I have a 2023 Mojave and I drove a Rubicon Unlimited for a week. The Rubicon seemed to ride smoother. But the beefier suspension and frame was why I went with the Mojave
The only thing that really makes it tough for me to decide which I’ll get, is the fact that the Rubicon has the sway bar disconnect and the Mojave doesn’t. I freaking love that button. If there was an easy way to put that in later, I’d totally go Mojave.
@@madieonmaus4290 From what I've read, it is easier (and cheaper) to add Rubicon features to a Mojave than Mojave features to a Rubicon. The wife's JKRU had quite the flashing light show on the dash when hers went bad.

As a person that has been off-roading 45 years now, it is common for us to have many people out with us, with vehicles that have various degrees of equipment performance and limitations too, ranging from extreme capability to little/moderate capability. Regardless, everyone drives to the ability of their equipment and manages to get through ALL obstacles. The short coming of this video is to expect each vehicle to perform equally on a trail and taking the EXACT same line on an obstacle. A better consideration would be to alternatively say that we are simply going to go 30 miles in one direction and how a person navigates any obstacles along the way is up to them relative to how they feel as though their ride is/is not limited by any performance constraints. The fair test would be to compare notes after a 30 mile run and discuss the variations between both units. My guess is that both units have their strengths and weaknesses but are probably largely equally capable of getting the job done if allowed to play to their individual strengths and weaknesses. Then in turn the same comparable run should be done in the desert as well. My guess that in the end it should always be a coin flip where an end user needs to decide what environment represents the bulk of their off road driving and hence what vehicle spec best suits them in the end. I'd guess in the end there is probably a 90%-95% overlap in regards to identically consistent performance between the 2 different units.
Great video! Helped me decide between a Rubicon and Mojave. When you talk about setting up the Mojave for rock crawling you don't mention placing it in off road plus mode. One of the advantages of off road + is that in first gear, 4 low, the front axle uses more aggressive braking to simulate a locking axle. You pretty much have to put the automatic in manual mode 4 low, first gear, because it shifts so quickly into 2nd gear. Still not a good as a locking differential, but better than not having the brake lock differential active.
I would go with the Mojave. I haven't driven either of them and don't know if you can make a solid axle vehicle handle well at high speed but if anybody can it would be Fox. In this video you could actually see how much smoother the Mojave was with the jounce stops and fox shock. Also, your comparison remains incomplete until you take them side by side in the desert at high speed. You guys take care of yourselves.
The Mojave should be smoother and more comfortable on road and at least 95% of the time off road when you're just cruising down the trail. It's a way better choice for almost everyone who's going to buy a Gladiator and not lift it.
@@Rkbrown88 I said I want a Rubicon with the Mojave stocks, the same frame reinforcements, and actually good axles. I'm changing the suspension regardless of what Jeep I get from the factory...although it would be nice to have multiple low range options (like w a twin transfer case) I'm going w the Rubicon all day and putting even BETTER high and low speed suspension under it!
I was going back and forth between the two, I do mostly overlanding so they both would work. The dealer said Rubicons hold more value, so I went that way, a 2023. I'm pretty happy with my choice, but I;m sure I'd be just as happy with the Mojave.
I added reservoir shocks and King bumps to a 2 door 2012 Rubicon and it did so good the wheelbase was the limiting factor. same here...didn't like them at first but starting to grow on me....the only good looking ones from the factory r the rubicons and now the mojave...those stock tires on a sport just look horrible
Now that I think of it it's honestly looks like all 3 past Jeep pick UPS all piece together in then given a modern twist. It has the fenders from the over lander from the fifties it has the name and some of the looks of the Gladiator and then it's a quarter ton like the Comanche.
Didn’t like them till I seen them setting on 35s it better. I think 35s should be standard. Especially now to compete with the bronco coming with the 35s. Looking seriously into the gladiator for a family overland rig
I realize this video is 3 years old. What you didn't try on that first test in the Mojave was the crawl cruise control which electronically makes the front axle a locker using the brakes electronics
IMO, the Mojave is trying to turn the Gladiator into something it isn't. A solid front axle, V6 truck just isn't a desert runner to me. The Rubicon is how the Gladiator is supposed to be, especially given equal pricing.
Roman I think you’re opinion is half finished. They need to put a HEMI in the Mojave and they need to put the EcoDiesel in the Rubicon! That would be the dream

Would enjoy seeing a TRD Off-Road take the same lines as you took with these Gladiators. I am honestly surprised there was not a more even result over the rocks. Being high centered and or caught up should have the same outcome regardless of the front lockers. Push/pull work great going up something or through something as long as you are not high centered. I wouldn't go with the Mojave over the Rubicon even though I live in the desert. My son wants a razor for that high speed stuff. I've raced dirt bikes and had lots of wreck and I'm well past that stuff. I enjoy cruising through the desert and seeing new sights. Racing through it you'll miss most of it just because you're having to concentrate on not hitting the next obstacle. I enjoy the sights and fun ride much more then a white knuckle crash test. So it's Rubicon all the way.
Fantastic video. Rubi all day- way easier and less expensive to add the suspension from the mojave to a rubi than to add the lockers, lower t case, and sway disco of the rubi on a mojave. Of course I own (and love) a Rubi- your mileage may vary.
All just depends on location. I'm in Florida trail running through wildlife areas and forests, Mojoave made most sense for me. Jeeps will always hold value, maybe will go with Rubicon in a couple years.
Colorado rocks is a great test but I'd also like to see that bearded canadian guy's offroad review. Oh, and also a Talking Trucks (never knew trucks could talk😂) episode on how to add Mojave goodies to the Rubicon (or a front locker to a Mojave, but it seems like a more difficult task since you need to reprogram the electronics to show a front locker on the screen and make it possible to engage it using the Rubicon's switch)
Would love to see something like this for the Ford Superduty FX4 vs Tremor. What happened to the Tremor? I have seen very few driving videos of the Tremor from TFL.
Been wondering the same thing, that’s what got me to even check out this channel but it seems to be a forgotten truck of the fleet. My biggest disappointment with the Tremor is no long bed.
Philly car show didn’t even have a Tremor in the building and I was there to buy it . Not anymore the POS Ford Rep gave me crap when I asked about one . More info on a tremor would be great . Thank you love the reviews 🙌
Seems like they both got stuck on the rear diff and they both did fine when the rear diff cleared. Sure the lack of front locker will make a difference at some point, but it didn't on that test. Also seemed pretty obvious the ride comfort inside the Mojave was far superior on the high speed run.
Agreed David and I'd like to mention that the trac control on a wrangler or a ram will work in the front even when it says trac off and even in 4 low. What this means is that if he had kept a heavy foot on the gas pedal that Jeeps computer would of transferred power to the front left on its own. You cant back off the throttle if you want that wheel brake limited slip to work, but it will work!
I have a good friend who has an FJ with front and rear lockers. He tells me he has used the front locker twice in fifteen years. There are pros and cons with a front locker.
Rubicon is great on paper but if you're doing any serious off-roading and rock crawling, a 2 or 4 door Wrangler Rubicon is a far superior choice. Jeep- just give us the best of all worlds- Hemi Mojave with front lockers and (optional) 4:1 transfer case! Now that's a truck people would pay 70 grand for!
But are great versions... one more "dedicated" to climb rocks, other to "desert crossing at high speed". Great material. Just adding a wish from Brazil "espero que o inter perca".
I won't be rock crawling, then again I won't be jumping my 60K truck. BUT for general off road 4x4 use make mine the Rubicon. Since they are both the same price and you get a front locker and crawler transfer case in the Rubicon i think its a better bang for a very expensive buck. What I would like is a rear locker and maybe a limited slip front axle, regular transfer case in the Willys edition.
Rubicon all the way. I need the front and rear lockers. The suspension the in the Rubicon is soft and the ride is nicer with the front disconnect sway bar.
this...18 seconds of "fast" trail and puddles is nothing...go hammer down a dirt road for miles and the performance difference will be MUCH more noticeable.
I'd like the diesel on the Mojave, OR them to bring a 4Xe on the Gladiator. LOVEd my Rubicon 4Xe... But I need cargo room, and I was hoping this would be the year I'd be able to get one, I may just have to go for a 3.0 DIesel Rubicon if I can find one.
It seems like World Slowest Drag Races should be done slightly downhill on a paved surface. A lot of that 4:1 vs 2.72:1 debate is based on how well it crawls down obstacles without the brakes, not just how it goes up. It seems like removing potholes and other major interferences with the test would help compare vehicles that are more different, which might help with strange results like the truck WSDR that happened a month ago where the results didn't really match the driving experiences of the trucks. Just a thought, love the videos!
I read in an article that jeep won't put a hemi in the wrangler or Gladiator cuz it's to tight of a fit to be considered safe by the federal government.
I have a 2021 Mojave. And I agree, it should have a HEMI !!! But I still like it a lot. But if and when the 392 HEMI becomes available in the Mojave I will trade up. And mine is a manual but the next will be an auto.
It might be the upcomming parallel hybrid engines+electric motors for these trucks be faster especially on high altitude and/or more powerful than Hemi, and surely more fuel efficient. But we have to outlive to that day. Stay safe.

BaracW the infamous death wobble the newer super duties suffer from ruined it for us apparently.
Yeah their Tremor coverage was very disappointing. One of the worst out of all the channels I watch.
Now desert running face off: Mojave vs Tacoma TRD Pro
vs ZR2 (non-bison gas power)
Zr2 beat both at high speed runs
“ Am I damaging anything ? “ If you have to ask, you most likely are.
A cartridge casing in the tire treads? Must have driven through Denver.
It's easier to upgrade suspension than install a front locker. I believe it maybe be cheaper to just upgrade the suspension also?
Basically less of a desert runner, more of a desert fast walker.
AKA JUNK!!!
@@Unburdened_Beauty just empty every pocket.
But are great versions... one more "dedicated" to climb rocks, other to "desert crossing at high speed". Great material.
Just adding a wish from Brazil "espero que o inter perca".
I get that not everybody needs a crawler transfer case or even front and real lockers BUT since they are the same price ...make mine a Rubicon
Take them to some sand dunes, and over some washboard dirt roads. How big is the difference, there?
this...18 seconds of "fast" trail and puddles is nothing...go hammer down a dirt road for miles and the performance difference will be MUCH more noticeable.
90 percent of these will be mall crawlers 😂
The Mojave, it has the upgraded frame. You can upgrade or add the rest.
FLT doesn't know the definition of a Desert Run ..
I think I would get Rubicon and run stock until warrenty is up then upgrade suspension small lift and put 35s on at that point. Thoughts ?
Yes
I'd like the diesel on the Mojave, OR them to bring a 4Xe on the Gladiator. LOVEd my Rubicon 4Xe... But I need cargo room, and I was hoping this would be the year I'd be able to get one, I may just have to go for a 3.0 DIesel Rubicon if I can find one.
I think you could just get a Ruby and gear it differently and maybe upgrade the shocks. Then you’d have the best of both worlds.
That last part you could really tell the difference. Roman was bouncing around while the Russian looked more stable and calm.
Jeep needs to come out with a model of combined Rubicon, and Mojave, and needs to lift for clearance, the best of both!.,both great jeeps great job!.
I have a 2021 Mojave.
And I agree, it should have a HEMI !!!
But I still like it a lot.
But if and when the 392 HEMI becomes available in the Mojave I will trade up.
And mine is a manual but the next will be an auto.
How does a desert runner have a solid front axel?
Google King of The Hammers
And a weak v6?!?!??
Seth Johnson i did. Most of the winners the past few years have been IFS. (5/8 last few year). And ifs murders the SFs in the desert section
@@philllsxga.7737 yeah grow up guys...most the time these package deals are just a bunch of stickers on an otherwise stock vehicle
Thank you guys for uploading these during the corona pandemic of 2020. My father and I have been beyond bored the last few weeks!
I'd go with the Rubicon through the the rough terrain and it's cheaper than the Mojave. I'd consider the Mojave if a better engine was installed.
So when you do a test like this you should try and use the same driver as well.
First test shows why a reg. cab jeep truck would be the best
"When I'm trying to social distance myself from Roman, this is a great place to be." Hilarious!
So basically the rubi with king shocks and you're golden.
I'm going with the Mojave... Don't need a front locker nor a disconnectable sway bar lol
I love when Andre shut the window on Roman at 13:28
try the Rubicon with sway disconnected in race
It might be the upcomming parallel hybrid engines+electric motors for these trucks be faster especially on high altitude and/or more powerful than Hemi, and surely more fuel efficient. But we have to outlive to that day. Stay safe.
Great comparison. If there was ever a zombie apocalypse I would always choose the rock crawler!
Eh, both Jeeps smacked the rear diff on the razor rocks in the exact same spot. I wasn't convinced the front locker helped at all.
This episode is truly a nail biter with the scraping and all but I really hope that trail becomes a regular in your series.
Well done TFL Truck!!!
You can still manually disconnect the sway bars...
