"Every line in this game should sound cringey, but in the actual context, it sounds so cool" Charlie basically summed up the writing of the entire MSG series
Imagine playing ball with someone in college and twenty years later you hear that he became a politician and died fighting some cyborg mf while using nanomachines
I think it's the only game I played that shoves a policial debate in your face bringing Armstron's neoliberalism vs Raiden's protecting the weak ideals, but making it amazing and unforgettable by the best among reasons
@@AbyssWatcher745 I think so, I think he was more concerned over diplomacy but I heard about neoliberalism a while ago so I guess it was stuck in my head
@@lucky6961 Yeah no. I don't really think neoliberalism is about "the land of the truly free" " Where every man can fight his own wars" "People will kill and die for what they believe. Not for money. Not for oil" "The law changes for the individual not the other way around"
I think the point of the Sam DLC being "harder" and everything in it being "faster" is that Sam is entirely human at this point, the enemies aren't faster or tougher than when you play as Raiden, Sam just genuinely has no cybernetic enhancements
Its also designed in a much more confining way, playing as sam is much more methodical with very weighty decisions and way less player freedom. Its a parry and charge attack fiesta and not playing the base game on revengeance will ill prepare you for that. A lot of people who avoided rev difficulty dont know that it cranks the absolute shit out of the parry damage and will do things like 1 shot jetstream sam. I wouldnt say its harder, just deceptively different.
@@superluigi6968 yes, completing the game on revengeance is a completely different experience. Parries are king and sam eats dirt before the first chorus. Almost a decade later and Armstrong is still a huge meme, and every thing he says just hits even harder. That's how you know Revengeance is truly an immortal masterpiece
Just to be clear for Sam's augmentations-- prior to his encounter with Armstrong, he had 0 augmentations. He was a normal flesh and blood human in a performance enhancing exosuit (which might be why his DLC is so hard-- enemies hitting harder and faster may be because he lacks the artificially enhanced reaction times and durability of Raiden). After Armstrong stabbed (and practically severed) his arm, it was replaced with a cybernetic arm, making is the only augmentation he had. This means the guy solo'd both Blade Wolf and a Metal Gear Ray with no augmentations, and nearly defeated armstrong-- something Raiden barely managed at his peak.
If you think about it Sam actually could've gotten worse with his new cybernetic arm because of muscle memory and how he would have to get used to his new arm and stuff
You can tell this game was rushed because it lacks polish in certain areas, but it's still so amazing and really a testament to what PlatinumGames can do. It's also the most coherent rendition of the metal gear lore by far, and it cuts back on the most confusing and silly aspects of the previous games to make a world that actually feels somewhat serious.
44:49 Originally, Sam was fighting to avenge his father's death at the hands of a drug cartel (he ran a martial arts dojo before his murder). Using the family blade, the Murasama, Sam cut down his killers, and later went to dispense justice as a vigilante of sorts, being called *Minuano* (the cold wind of Brazil). He later decided to go after Armstrong for sending men to die for reasons unknown to them, but after his fight with the Senator, Sam instead joined him. During his time with World Marshal, Sam had lost sight of his original ideals instead fighting for the sake of fighting, but after watching the dedication Raiden had to saving the brains of the children, he began to question what he was really doing. The reason he had fought Raiden in the Badlands was to rediscover his ideals. His theme song during the fight reflects all of this: A man who's lost sight of his reasons to fight and who has replaced them with how he fights, represented by his blade. The bit with no lyrics (or when you knock away his sword), represents how this final fight makes him feel alive and human again. For a moment, he not only thrives in the heat of battle, but he actually rediscovers his original ideals: to fight for justice and keep soldiers from being sent to fight in wars they don't believe in, seeing these ideals in Raiden. He doesn't need the fight itself as his reason to fight anymore when he has his original ideals in hand. The final verse shows Sam's reflection during his time with World Marshal. He had spent so much time thriving on bloodshed, climbing the ranks and becoming a Wind of Destruction that he had forgotten why he fought at all. This is why he is testing Raiden: if Jack's resolve is great enough to beat Sam, then it will be sufficient enough to defeat Armstrong as well. He was checking to see if Raiden was worthy enough as his successor (Think Bruce Wayne passing the torch of Batman to Dick Greyson (Robin), except the test is killing each other).
@@Liamx-00 The last one that does that is DMC V and it came out half a decade ago. Man, I really want more wacky hack n slash with ridiculous story like these games
No this is waaaay too over the top for me lol. At least for like mortal kombat, it doesn't take itself all that seriously. This is like the opposite where it's 20% funny 80% serious
I love that there is "Blade Wolf", "Mistral", "Monsoon", "Sundowner", "Armstrong" and then just fucking Sam. One of the coolest characters and probably my favorite boss fight and his name is just Sam
It took me way too long to notice that after catching Sam's sword against Armstrong, Raiden says "Okay, let's dance." the same line Sam said before their fight and even takes the same fighting stance as him. Also Sam just effortlessly bodying Metal Gear Ray and ending it with one singular quick big boy slash when Raiden struggled and had to fight it twice is just so badass. This game is so fucking cool.
My favorite is that lyrics for the Sam fight are playing from the very start of the fight, which is normally a phase 2 kind of thing, because you already had phase 1, in the prologue.
Senator Armstrong despite only appearing in the last few minutes of the game, manages to be a compelling and memorable boss. Not only that but the memes from this game are still going. Wish there was a sequel
Sam's suit isn't cyborg enhancements. It's more of an exoskeleton to boost his physical capabilities. His right arm is his only inorganic body part, because of Armstrong fucking up his normal one at the end of the DLC.
Sam being such a hard character to play makes sense when you remember he doesn't have any cybernetics. Which just makes his boss fight with Raiden that much more impressive, since he's kicking your ass with *nothing.*
@@hatemongerofthetoxicbrood6561 Logically his strength should be enhanced somewhat to not easily get overpowered by Raiden. Man can throw a metal gear into the air after all
I just now realized that the bike that Raiden steals belonged to Sam. That explains why Sam wanted to fight Raiden, he was angry at him for taking his bike.
@@user-fv9er3by5n its right though in the sam DLC (which takes place before the main events), sam leaves his bike where raiden picked it up. sam was just angry that his bike got stolen.
They need to make more badass games like this, just wacky over the top insanity the entire time, every enemy looks super cool and the cinematic combat is a pleasure, always wondered why the metal gear solid games were never like this one.
Because this game is a spin-off hack n slash game, not like your traditional stealthy metal gear solid game with a groundbreaking story that makes you question things. Not at all saying rising’s story isn’t great either.
@@arrogantlobster3270 Your 100% correct my friend, I enjoyed snake eater and guns of the patriots, those are the only ones I played, would have been awesome for them to make a Rising 2, its good that they can separate the 2 genres
For that part at 8:06, I like to think Sam was just wanting an excuse to spare Raiden so he could get stronger and face him again later. Truly the Goku of cyborg samurai.
I think what makes sam my favorite is that “we’ve both heard enough speeches by now” because every single other metal gear game (including this one) is jam packed with characters monologuing about their ideals
The second Mistral fight helps show how far you've come and how much stronger you've become in both upgrades and skills. The second Monsoon fight is also there.
Charlie makes jokes like "He could dual wield with both halves of his body", or "Maybe the prime minister isn't dead, he seemed like a tough guy" But with Kojima cyborg technology, those are honestly 100% reasonable predictions
This game is so fucking cool. Everything from the music to the combat and the bosses. The story is goofy as hell but it doesn’t shy away from it like when raiden seethes with rage because wolf won’t shake like a dog.
Basically every metal gear solid story lol, mgs 3, and 5 tries a rather serious tone in story, but they still manage to crack up some goofy things here and there, Revengeance just went full comedy mode in almost every aspect and i fking love it
"Metal Gear Rising is a masterpiece" *Ahh yes, the floor here is made out of floor.* No, seriously, I can't believe how well the game holds up and my god, those realistic, gory cutting mechanics...
"He was gonna end war forever" No, he wanted to end war *as a business*, but also create a society where everyone can kill each other because they themselves wanted to instead of because their country told them to.
@@sasdagreat8052 That's kind of what lawlessness is, innit? Near as I can tell, Armstrong dreams of a world of people with individual power persecuting those without it and fighting each other in a free-for-all - mistakenly thinking that everyone loves combat. Anarchy. It's not authoritarianism, because that involves controlling people and forcing troops to fight for you, but rather some sort of anarchy with no organized governance to "tell people what to do". There's a reason he's not running with that as his political platform: it's unpopular. Very few people like the idea of anarchy. Most of us appreciate some kind of government, either because it benefits society as a whole, because it benefits our tribe, or because it benefits specific individuals (dictators). Armstrong sees peace as boring (celebrity bullshit); to him, life only has meaning in the individual struggle for survival, and if people aren't struggling to survive, by god, he'll *make* them struggle.
@Aquarium Gravel Yeah, I guess what Armstrong meant by "the strong" isn't necessarily physical strength, but strength of will. It just so happens that in video games those often overlap lol.
1:15:59 See, funnily enough, Sam is actually fully human by this point. He bears no cyborg enhancements: the only things he has to put him on equal footing with his enhanced foes are skill, a gun sheathe, his enhanced Murasama, and an exosuit. He only becomes a cyborg post-DLC, and even then it's just his arm (the replacement of which proved to be a nerf). Sam dunked on total cyborgs and UGs as a human being. If this guy teamed up with Raiden instead of staying with Armstrong, the battle in Pakistan would've been over within under 3 minutes. Not even kidding
I believe someone on platinum (maybe kojima himself) said that Sam could have actually win against armstrong, had he not go for the killing blow immediately
@@givemeanameiwillhate9525 I remember hearing that as well. If he had turned the fight into a war of attrition, Armstrong probably would've run out of energy to power his nanos, at which point Sam could've taken him down. But still, the fact that he landed a significant blow at all is no small feat for a human.

The fact that Raiden stabbed a giant robot with its own sword is pretty cool. Then you remember his pain inhibitors were off the whole time he did that sequence
I think Platinum excels at that. Just like Bayonetta, it is utterly committed and unapologetic about its insanity. And it stays coherent enough to make you care.
@@SageLegacy actually I'd argue a lot of RPGs would benefit from lyrical music along the lines of MGR (just not going in as hard, of course), given that it'd cut down the need for cutscenes declaring motivation
Monsoon is the equivalent of lines like “I can win, I feel great, I CAN DO THIS!” and “The name’s Recoome, it rhymes with doom and you’ll be hurting all too soon”.
It’s interesting. Sam cuts Raiden with the same technique he uses against Armstrong only when he cuts Raidens arm off the stump is flat while when he cuts off Armstrongs his arm is cut at an angle. Kinda showing how Sam learned to cut arms flat after Armstrong stabbed him with one.
Fun fact this game was supposed to be a prequel of metal gear solid 4 to fill in the gaps in the story but then Alastair Duncan (the guy who voiced Armstrong) came in screaming about patriotism and nanomachines so they changed the script of the game.
Wait, so Armstorng's voice actor improvised some lines and they liked it so much the whole game was completely rewritten? That's fucking boss. *Big Boss.*
Yeah that's not true. Kojimas team couldn't think of a game past the sword slicing concept so they gave it to Platnium who developed it into a sequel instead.
You know how much more overpowered Raiden would be fighting those PMC soldiers? The gameplay would probably be more linear but the levels would have more variety
So since I have your attention, due to this video being so new, “Rules of nature”, is actually about how the Metal Gears are outdated, the things that were once so dangerous, they were the final bosses of every Metal Gear Solid game, have fallen to the wayside, to make room for highly augmented soldiers, who are far more dangerous, mobile, fast, and lethal. The once mighty predator has been reduced to the prey of these new apex predators. The song is about how a weapon to surpass Metal Gear has been created, and is now everywhere, making the once formidable Metal Gears nothing but dying hunters, starving for whatever prey they can find, only to be easily killed by what once would have been their prey. And it’s not hard to see this either, since the fight against the Metal Gear at the start is by far the easiest boss fight in the game. And this metaphor also helps build Armstrong’s character even more, because in lore, the thing he uses to fight Raiden before he gets his nanomachines, is not actually a Metal Gear. In the lore of the game, it was only given the Metal Gear monicker to help it sell better, and in reality, is not one, as it is not bipedal, and has no AI. Think about that. Armstrong is essentially piloting a Chinese knockoff Metal Gear, that lacks any of the things that makes a Metal Gear, a Metal Gear. It’s the perfect metaphor for the front he puts up. It looks, sounds, and acts like what the Patriots were doing, but in reality, it’s a middle finger to everything they represented. This Metal Gear is only similar in name, but when you look beyond that, they’re actually completely different. Like Armstrong, and the Patriots, the very ideals he claims to uphold, while secretly despising them, and trying to undermine them. And like how he takes the fate of America into his own hands, he also takes the controls of this fake Metal Gear into his hands, as well. He could have easily just had it installed with an AI, but he chose to be its pilot, to control the machines that will burn down the old America, and plant the seeds of the new America he strives to create. Armstrong in a nutshell, basically.

The definition of a meme is: "an element of a culture or system of behavior that may be considered to be passed from one individual to another by nongenetic means, especially imitation." Senator Armstrong, even though he is a small element in the finale of the game created a meme an idea that is passed down even today. He was may have died but his meme will live on.
Raiden's memes and Armstrong's memes definitely modify/merge with each other in some way judging by the ending. Hell, if Raiden lost in this fight, I would expect that Armstrong would probably be left with hard questions to ask himself considering how close someone came to defeating him, someone who embodied everything Armstrong sees as "strong" but with a completely opposing perspective.
Kojima got a lot of his inspiration for MGS and MGS2 from Richard Dawkins book the selfish gene which defined meme well before the internet existed yeah they started to lean into the internet meme definition in the later games but that's not what was originally intended
I remember being 7 and playing this. I struggled so hard with Armstrong and popped off so hard that I cried when I beat him. I was like a whole celebration. Charlie at the start: They really shouldn't make a sequel after a catastrophic failure with Babylon's Fall. Charlie at the end: They really need to make a sequel.
A little detail I absolutely love is that, because Sam wasn't used to his cybernetic arm, he's the only boss who's weapon can be knocked out of his hand And the fact that he was able to keep kicking Raiden's arse even without the sword , WITH 0 ENHANCEMENTS aside from his suit mind you, is just the cherry on top

Rising was the closest “true” successor to the MGS trilogy than anything that came after 3 in terms of story structure. The franchise really lost itself as time went on by dropping the concept of a one-man-army taking down an entire military squad comprised of awesome specialized lunatics, lead by a morally questionable badass who was arguably justified given the circumstances. Armstrong was far more in line with the likes of Solidus and Liquid than the miserable garbage we saw with Coldman and Skullface; and Desperado could easily hold their ground against the likes of Foxhound, Dead Cell, and the Cobra unit. It’s pretty easy to see why the game is still so loved; it embodies and embraces what people enjoyed most about the franchise to begin with.

The way the music ties into the boss fights was easily the coolest part for me. The way the bosses connected to the lyrics for one, but also the way they'd drop in the vocals and it gets louder right when the action's getting really flashy. I think bosses in pretty much any game would be more memorable with music tying in that closely
Armstrong may not be the most complex final boss in the world, but the combination of the fun, challenge, spectacle, music, setting, and the character himself make this easily my favorite final boss of all time.
@@ratman7212 I disagree. Armstrong is the ultimate test in the game whether you have learned all the mechanics or not. These include: learning his moveset (which is always the same), dodging, parrying, the accuracy of your cuts during blade time, etc. Each boss is supposed to teach you these elements of the game, and Armstrong just combines them into one. Maybe the one annoying thing about him is his HP, but then again he also drops a ton of healing and gives you opportunities for free damage a lot. I think his fight is brilliant
@@jerkopatrik Yeah I liked how Armstrong threw every game mechanic at you all at once. It makes sense that bladewolf seems buffed in Sams dlc, considering Sam isn't exactly Raiden, he's not a cyborg I bet he doesn't even have pain inhibitor control, Sam was just a really good human samurai he is going to feel those slashes more than Raiden does
Sam does seem to scream louder when he gets hit than Raiden did. It would make sense that he either has less effective or no pain inhibitor. Minor/moderate cyborg enhancement and probably armor or an exoskeleton of some kind but little else. Compared to many enemies in the game and Raiden who are basically complete cyborgs in and out.
Blade wolf isn’t just buffed, but Sam also gets less benefits from partying actually putting him in a worse situation. It’s meant to be a last resort. You have to dodge attacks or throw a red phosphorus at blade wolf to allow you to spam charge attacks.
Babylons fall was mostly Squares fault forcing them to make it live action/multiplayer focused, and had to basically scrap their prior progress. Platinums amazing except when they get a lame publisher it seems. The trailer from 2019 is clearly a very different build vs the 2021 trailer/release gameplay. to explain a bit of what happened to Babylon's fall: Platinum were making a completely different kind of game (same name but I mean in terms of structure etc) but then Square's last two attempts to make live service games flopped (marvel and what ever that looter shooter was) they had platinum completely retool the game into a live service mess which forced them to completely gut the game. Meanwhile square already has ff14 one of the biggest cash cows in the industry and they're just being greedy for more :)

standing here, I realize that I unironically want to play this now. Sad that Platinum created such hits like this and Bayonetta then went on to make Babylon's Fall
People dont understand that Square Enix came to them and told them make a game in that shitty dungeon looter format. They could only do so much to a game out of it.
It's weird that publishers look at what Platinum has done, what it can do, and decide to contact them for low-budget licensed games or... whatever Square-Enix did. To my deep regret, only Nintendo seems to be willing to give them a chance beyond one-off projects, for some reason, which necessarily locks the games down to a single platform, because Nintendo is as greedy as any of them. Granted, Babylon's Fall seems to be something like Square-Enix giving them a second chance after the first one (Nier:A) went so well, except that the most believable explanation for the result turning out badly would be executive meddling from Square-Enix, which undermines the concept of giving them a chance. I don't want to say that it's impossible that Platinum could make a stinker, anyone can make mistakes, but S-E has a long history of shooting itself in the foot, so this sure looks like it's just more of that. Then again, someone in another comment said that Platinum has a new CEO, so that could be bad news.
The problem is, despite a lot of Platinum games being amazing, they never sell extremely well. Even Nier only sold like 6 million which isn’t a lot if you compare. Bayo games are amazing but they only sold 2 million.

Originally, Sam was fighting to avenge his father's death at the hands of a drug cartel (he ran a martial arts dojo before his murder).
His theme song during the fight reflects all of this:
A man who's lost sight of his reasons to fight and who has replaced them with how he fights, represented by his blade.

Armstrong sees peace as boring (celebrity bullshit); to him, life only has meaning in the individual struggle for survival, and if people aren't struggling to survive, by god, he'll *make* them struggle.

well i mean the jp voice actor is Joseph Joestar so... i don't see why not.

It’s pretty easy to see why the game is still so loved; it embodies and embraces what people enjoyed most about the franchise to begin with.

this game is better
The sheer CONVICTION in the lines is so good
On paper it sounds really cheesy, but they sell it so well that it works perfectly.
The way the music ties into the boss fights was easily the coolest part for me. The way the bosses connected to the lyrics for one, but also the way they'd drop in the vocals and it gets louder right when the action's getting really flashy. I think bosses in pretty much any game would be more memorable with music tying in that closely
yea, the music kinda tells the boss's story in a way (i don't know if i explained that right)
15:35
Mistral: “Ideals Jack, what are yours?”
Charlie: “Justice! …and ice cream on Tuesdays.”
Armstrong may not be the most complex final boss in the world, but the combination of the fun, challenge, spectacle, music, setting, and the character himself make this easily my favorite final boss of all time.
Idk I feel like the difficulty spike was too much at the end. Overall a 7.5-8 out of 10 which it would’ve been if Armstrong wasn’t a bullshit fight
The parrying vs dodging that you learn from the Blade Wolf fight, aiming your blade mode swings like the Sundowner fight, etc. Felt like a great way to end the game, by proving you've mastered every component. Plus there weren't any bullshit adds like most other fights in the game.
The last time I REALLY raged at a game was when this first came out and I was going against those gorilla-type enemies and not knowing how to parry.
Same, I related to this so hard.
Especially the gorillas in that dark subway
@@adityabhargav7879 Fuuuck the subway. Still hate it to this day. I can deal with a lot of the other areas, and the gorillas, but the subway really messes me up.

The time I raged hard was when you had to fight Armstrong as Sam. I had no idea you could roll dodge until the next day.
Sam's expressions are my favorite fucking thing. He's just so cocky, but you _know_ he can back it up.
The amount of interactivity this game has is wild. Like the attack where Armstrong throws stuff at you, you can just avoid that completely by running. It's pretty linear with progression but feels more open than most modern open world games.

Mans a Brazilian. Ofc he can double jump and fight a guy who is a senator of Colorado.
Sam does seem to scream louder when he gets hit than Raiden did. It would make sense that he either has less effective or no pain inhibitor. @@sparkie1j It's not a certified true story and nothing reporting on it, it's all from prior examples and inferring and reading between the lines so not everyone's gonna get it. Watching the series "What happened?" By matt mcmuscles gives a good insight into this kind of behind the scenes stuff.
A company releases a good game one day, then seemingly releases a trash game another, and that's all the situation appears to be on the outside for now. Don't be surprised if articles come about this games development similar to Anthems.
Not just that but if you look at the time line who was working on what it's pretty clear BF was made by a bunch of newbies. to explain a bit of what happened to Babylon's fall:
Platinum were making a completely different kind of game (same name but I mean in terms of structure etc) but then Square's last two attempts to make live service games flopped (marvel and what ever that looter shooter was) they had platinum completely retool the game into a live service mess which forced them to completely gut the game. Meanwhile square already has ff14 one of the biggest cash cows in the industry and they're just being greedy for more :)
Maybe instead of telling people to make a live service game, they should get Yoshi-P to helm another project. I mean, he understands live service games far more than Square ever will... And his resume is mostly MMOs. Namely FF14.
@@kyotanaka920 Yoshi-p is director of ff16 as well. Besides he probably won't work on much else. He himself has said he would have to die before he stopped working on ff14.
On top of that after a real reborn happened Yoshi-p is on the business' board of directors (or equivalent) and has been sited that he fights off square execs all the time from ff14. He's got his hands full already lol.
Besides square doesn't NEED another live service game like ff14 they're just being greedy. They are one of like 3 companies that has an active service game that brings in the kind of money that ff14 does. They legit dont need another lol
Looks like you just made this shit up and are spouting it as facts. In fact, Platinum’s new CEO is all-in on live service games, so they’re also partly to blame.
@@gameboycolor47 They definitely don't need another, but the dumb fucks at Square doesn't understand that. If they're going to INSIST on persuing this fruitless endeavor, the very least they can do is to DO IT RIGHT. And of all the people under Square... They've shown time and again they are not willing to learn from their mistakes, so their only hope of a SUCCESSFUL live service game will only be from Yoshi-P's directions

Sad that Platinum created such hits like this and Bayonetta then went on to make Babylon's Fall
And to think they also made Nier:Automata is nuts.
People dont understand that Square Enix came to them and told them make a game in that shitty dungeon looter format. They could only do so much to a game out of it.
You can get it for like $5 on CD keys. 110% worth the money.
