Finally, someone posted a comparison video!! =) I was hoping the SCX10.3 would perform much better, especially when compared to the Defender, which is the arguably the worst performing (crawler) of the TRX-4's.
Thank you. We wanted to start with this comparison since these at the two most stunning, full-featured Crawlers for the trail. They are pushed to the limit on the rocks but they do well. The videos for the Sport, Gen8, Scx10 ii are coming
I’ve spent money and saved money thanks to your reviews Francis! You just saved me $600+ in deciding NOT to get the axial. TRX4 is still king! Love the camera work here.
after watching many, many, of yours, and others videos. narrowed it to these two crawlers. this video swayed me to the trx-4. but going for the build version. enjoyed your videos, very in formative. also purchased the radiolink 6 channel. from your videos, and the fact it has good long range. plan on fpv, have thousands of feet of creek bed through my property.
Another awesome video! After subscribing to your channel I started slowly moving from my Slash 4x4 to a Defender following most of your upgrade recommendations and tips. Keep it up!
Not sure why a lot of people keep asking the scx10iii to be put up against the Trx4 sport? It's pretty obvious which truck will do better... once a basic builders kit or stripped down version of the scx10iii gets released, then it will be a comparison... I've got a few different brands of crawlers and like them all for different reasons, it's a great time to be in this hobby, so many fantastic trucks that you can't really go wrong with any of them. So many hop up options.. Just buy what you like the look of or suits the performance you desire, combination of both perhaps,. The "BEST" is always subjective... Thanks for the footage RC Review. Cheers 👍
Sean Phillips I wanted someone to just say this flat out in the comments because rn I’m very nervous about which crawler I should get😂 shooting for TRX4 Bronco rn and gonna trim fenders and either put Jeep Wrangler body on it or 1946 dodge power wagon body
Love your detailed non bias reviews, definitely helps me decide what truck is right for me. After a few crawler comparisons of yours I think the scx10.3 is for me . Plus aftermarket options are plentiful
Did you buy one? I’m thinking Traxxas, getting the chassis kit. But once you buy the body and accessories that the RTR comes with, it is more expensive than the RTR, so I’m kinda annoyed. The SCX kit is cheaper than the RTR and comes with the body.
It's not a straight up stock to stock comparison anyways, the Defender has an aftermarket interior with a modded body that weighs in over about double that on the Axial. He stated they are trail trucks and the tires didn't really matter on the trailing. He put Hyrax'es on the Axial for the rock climbing portion. I think this was more a casual comparison.
Well Fran!!! You picked the best Trx4 of them all, that's the one I have and it kicks a$$!!!!🤘🤘🤘🤘 In my opinion I feel that when comparing stock tires, the Canyon crawlers perform the best. I have driven with many other makes and models and I think they did better then most. I will even say that once modified they are work on the same level as the Hyrax.
Nah...they don't. I have a rock garden in my backyard, with steep climbs. I know the lines. Ran stock modified canyon tires on the trx4 sport. Just switched to beadlocks today, with Hyrax preditors, and it's a tank compared to the stock tires.
@@miker1473 That is what ia cool. I have had the opposite results. My neighbor across from me has a large rock area in her front yard that I like to play on and both tires worked great. The one set of tires that worked better then both in that area are the KLR-m's.
I agree with Mike R on this one I heavily siped the Canyon tires and removed some of the treads and installed CI lil nova duel stage foams and they still dont perform as well as my G8 compound Hyrax with proline single stage foams. They do however side hill better mostly due to the duel stage foams.
And if the Hyrax G8 compound is working for you, imagine the much softer predator compound. I was origionally thinking that going to the G8 might have only been a marginal improvement. That's why I went with the preditor. All I can say is, it's like having flypaper on the tires, compared to the original canyon tires. Of course, the surface you're running on has alot to do with it. But, it's easy to see a remarkable improvement here where I'm at. Sandstone, limestone, dolomite, and siltstone.
I have a 2020 Specialized Enduro and a Pivot Mach 4 sl. I also have a few ebikes like the Specialized Levo SL and Santa Cruz Heckler that are seeing a ton of action this winter and in social distancing since I can cover so much distance away from people.
Great video as usual. So glad more companies are doing kits now. Still loving the SCX24. I ordered the hopups you recommended in your vid on it. The tires have been backordered for 2 months but are supposed to come in this week. Can’t wait to install everything. Still planning on getting a 1/10 scale in future. Still going to go with TRX4 Sport. The 2 speed thing just doesn’t do it for me. Keep pumping out the vids.
Excellent side by side comparison. Thank you I'm having a hard time deciding which one of these trucks to buy. Maybe one of each is the way to go?? lol
I feel its just the same setup just one has a dig and different gearing. Both have same portal looks... I wonder if trx portals would fit in scx103? I feel they should have used the bronco or blazer to compare and use canyons on both rigs. Idk im just a die hard trx sport man. Good video
Thanks for your reviews there greatly appreciated 😎😁👍in the process of looking for my next crawler/ climber, not just trail truck. So far Trx sport sounds best with some mods
You can't go wrong with the sport i threw a cheapo servo and a set of deepwoods and I have beat the snot out of mine 0 maintenance and haven't broken anything and it runs right there except sterringwith my friends 1.2k rig. And the steering is more than gets the job done the comp is well a comp rig id expect it to beat a stock rtr
@@thomasgross8289 sweet thank you I've been hearing that it beats allot of rigs especially since at the cost of the truck is reasonable. And very little upgrades needed 👍😎😁
To fix the clicking check out Kisun’s rc life . The gears in the transmission are different from one side to the other . It’s hard to explain but Kisun has a great video on the fix .
I value your opinion on rock crawlers. I was interested in getting the SCX10 lll and it seems that it will be worth getting. I've already got the TRX4 Bronco and I enjoy using it. Other reviews I've seen on the Axial seem to be more biased towards one or the other. My TRX4 I just removed the selectable diffs and installed spools front and rear. I was just going to install the spool in the rear and leave the front selectable, but had the axles apart for service and installed the spool in the front as well. The servo for the rear locker died a while ago and was going to install the spool regardless. Front I was going to leave selectable but last minute decision, changed it out. I didn't remove the servos (even though the one for the rear is dead) in case I want to reinstall the selectable lockers. I also installed the Traxxas Traxx to give them a try on a few packs. I bought them originally to run in the snow and had them since pre-order, but this is the first run on them. The only thing I don't like about the Axial is the body. Around here, anyone running that vehicle in full size is a mall goer and I've not seen one even dirty. I prefer the Cherokee body as I got a full sized Cherokee XJ.
If you already have the TRX4 Bronco, you might be disappointed with the 10.3. We will be releasing a video soon talking about ALL it's high points and weaknesses. It's greatest strength is the quality of its scale body.
On my Axial SCX10-III, I changed out the kit 14 tooth pinion with one of another brand (Traxxas) having the same tooth count and the drivetrain noise diminished significantly. Noted that the Axial kit pinion with the motor mounted in the 14-t holes gave me no gear lash (play); whereas, the other pinion did have the right amount of lash. Measured the two pinions and found the Axial kit one had a few thousandths more diameter than the other which is a problem when using their motor plate with all the tooth designated holes.
Really!!!!! That is a really good find Bill. The drivetrain noise is driving people nuts. Whining and clicking. Not Redcat bad but quie uncharacteristic.
Nice video - as always. @RC Review maybe you can have a test or comparison with the TRX4 and the *YK4101* (also portal axles, locking diff´s and 2 gear) ?
If i already have the trx4 defender ..... Buying scx10 iii is wasting my Money?!? I want a New one for my wife...(my Choice ..enduro kit...Rc cross demon kit... scx10 iii rtr...or scx10 II rtr or kit...) Pls help
Just curious why you would use the top heavy defender knowing that is an issue that is always a downfall. I think if you would have used the bronco which has the same wheelbase and similar CG it would have performed better. I love your videos but sometimes I find the vs videos are a little bias or mismatched.
Since we have two Defenders in our home, I was curious to see how they might stack against the SCX10 III (mind you, my rig is modded to do way better as a crawler), but I agree that any other TRX-4 would have performed better in this test.
Would be cool once you mod your scx3 to your liking, test your top 3 cars against it all with stock trx4 tires. I only say this tire because I assume you have 3 full sets? Would really give people idea of how each truck works. Might be worth the investment to buy three sets of tires of whatever which you like with some foams so you can have a dead even comparison. Just something to think about.
Great job my friend so I am way more performance-based than Scale based could I build the 10 3 without the roll cage and interior and inner fenders kind of like a stripped-down version almost like a sport

Pretty informative, and entertaining comparison, of two nice vehicles. I’m kind of surprised you didn’t use a TRX Sport which has better approach angles, less top heavy and no rear spare tire. But enjoyable nonetheless.
Whoever is designing Axial's drive train these days needs to go back to school! Capra and SCX10.3 both FAIL! The biggest fail of them both is the horribly engineered transmissions. Both failed on the intended purpose. Capra just way too high and SCX10.3 is a waste of space and weight.
this comparison isnt even of any use.. scx is 12.3 wheel base Traxxas defender is 12.8 . Both cg are way different. Different tires alter performance a fairest comparison would be a bronco
I’m not so sure it’s of no use.. it clearly shows they’re about equal as trail crawlers. And on tech crawling, they’re very close with a slight edge to the SCX10.3 mostly due to the Defender’s massive 900 gram body. The comparisons to the Sport, SCX10.2, Gen8 are coming.
That TRX4 Sport shootout is coming. Just wanted to baseline it with a trail crawler that has a beautiful, detailed body to match the SCX10.3. They both have 2-speed tranny too and a 4th channels for diffs or dig. They both rand incredibly well IMHO.
@@RCReviewChannelfrom my experience, any of the bfg tred patterns seem to work better than hyrax. Starting to put more packs through a set of predator KM3's but I'm starting to think G8 krawlers work better.
Two speeds are a gimmick.... No matter what brand. My SCX10III with Dig and a locked single speed on Holmes Brushless is totally click free. Grease the gear shafts. As this is a crawler, speed doesn’t matter.

That TRX4 Sport shootout is coming. Just wanted to baseline it with a trail crawler that has a beautiful, detailed body to match the SCX10.3. They both have 2-speed tranny too and a 4th channels for diffs or dig.
They both rand incredibly well IMHO.
@@RCReviewChannel nice! Love your videos great work
Km3's looked better to me
They look way better and perform 90% there
@@RCReviewChannelfrom my experience, any of the bfg tred patterns seem to work better than hyrax. Starting to put more packs through a set of predator KM3's but I'm starting to think G8 krawlers work better.
Should of taken off the spare wheel on the Defender
Anyone know of the interior used for the defender?
It's the Proline one here. It fit good snp.link/d7e20247
Two speeds are a gimmick.... No matter what brand.
My SCX10III with Dig and a locked single speed on Holmes Brushless is totally click free. Grease the gear shafts. As this is a crawler, speed doesn’t matter.
Yessir im not gonna use dig or 2speed just a dedicated crawler
This may be the cause of your SCX III clicking. I don't own one but saw this and thought it may help you.

First
Not a fair comparison.
The TRX4 Sport is coming. Just had to get this trail crawler Defender out of the way first.
Lol Driver
Axial tires are much worse
Normally they are with the old, tiny ones. These new scx10 iii's are about the same.
69th!
