I don't know anything about crawling so when I was looking to buy my first crawler the Gen 8 looked like a good deal for $300. I'm glad I decided to buy it. I've done a couple things to it in the past few months that were recommended in a video on this channel. Transmitter upgrade, new servo, softer foams, tuck in the rear bumper. I already had another transmitter and servo so the only money I spent was on the foams. Will probably do a few more upgrades in the future but for right now I am very happy with the truck.

Nice! I have a TRX4 orange Defender with brass portal covers as well as ally beadlocks with flexy foam inserts. It drives scale, which is what I love about it, but that Gen8 was a surprise package as a stock item, especially on a budget. My TRX4 has too many cosmetic upgrades as I used to collect 1:18 cars before getting into RC, so I love the details available for it. But i f I was starting out, that Gen8 is an excellent rig.

This can try to make up for a little bit of that. All my rc crawlers each have there own little nitch. Some can do some and some can’t, it definitely amazes me what some can do and my comp trucks can’t. Pisses me off a little bit, but happy at the same time, a few of my Vaterra Ascenders do very well for what they are and no where near setup for serious crawling.

Francis... There's a brand new trick for the SCX10 III, if you're interested.
Changing the Transmission Gears to those for the STRAIGHT Axle Gears (outlined in the Manual) will give nearly the SAME Gearing as the TRX-4 in 1st Gear.
I'm STILL NOT a SCX10 III fanboy.... But I think it deserves a more even fight, with available stock parts. 😉
I would still remove the Roll Cage. It's pointless and you can barely see it anyway.
Like the Element... I don't think it's been given the fairest opportunity.
And I DON'T mean you - I mean the RC press in general.
The SCX10 III has had a LOT of engineering. Like the Element, it's potential hasn't been reached yet. 😉
They BOTH have a heavy LCG Chassis, similar to the $800 VS4-10 Pro!
    Stay SAFE Bro! 😷

That Gen8, even tho with that heavy body is the but best bang for the buck imo if u put even more "love" into it. i already got some lead weights sitting here for the fronttires, that may help some with the front weight while climbing.

I feel like the gen 8 won. I may be biased tho. But I do think that the trx4 had a busted leg trying to compete while wearing the tall defender body with the rear spare tire.

Great vid, but I think there are a few things to keep in mind. First, all the videos are from different date. Maybe TRX4 and Gen8 the same date but def SCX 10 III from different date. There should be a proper shootout once we can get out again. Second there should be compared with the same tire all of them (Hyrax). And as you said, maybe removing the spare tire on the Defender and maybe also remove the rear bumper as the other two barely have a rear bumper and better departure angles. I think that would level the field a little including weight. Love your vids.

somehow its looks to me as the SCX10 has 2.2 tires while the two other having 1.9, am im wrong? O.o.. !!!!Correction, i just checked, they should be 1.9 if they are the ones that comes with the kit, but they do look bigger imo =)

This was an excellent video, this was exactly what I needed to see. I've been going back and forth on a few different models, and this has finally sold me on the Gen8. I was leaning heavily toward it anyway, because of the looks and the price tag. But knowing it performs this well is icing on the cake.

Glad it was helpful! Yes, with its low price, there is an opportunity to get the dialed Axe edition. Or leave money for upgrades or the college fund.

Personally in large part because of this channel i opted for the trx4 sport for $330 swapped in 1080 esc and new servo, cut the tires and truck was great. Now i have some PL hyrax and beadlocks low cg battery tray. Looking for a little more wheel speed w/ brushless motor combo. Thinking HW axe 2700 or 3300 kv. What do you guys think? Love the channel.

    • @RCReviewChannel
      @RCReviewChannel  4 года назад +1

Hobbywing Axe 2700 is best among those two.. The weight is lower and the CG is lower.
We put a 2700 on our TRX4 Sport and it was just ok. The 2700 550 can motor has massive torque but not the highest rpm. So we put a 2-speed on it to utilize the torque. We left the 15t pinion. It's a 25 mph now and is crazy. It's manageable and stable but it's best when the diffs are unlocked so it can turn at speed.
A 2300kv 540 can Axe is really the best match for the TRX4 Sport.

  • @GoogleSpiesTooMuch

Tbf the choice of cars make the Gen 8 better than it is. It should have gone against the trx4 sport as the price is a lot closer or against the Bronco if comparing with similar body's. The Defender is strictly a trail truck and nobody buys it for rock crawling.
The biggest loser here was Axial imo. They are the newest and most expensive but aren't very good rock crawlers.
