We had the Fortune to Ride the Transsibirien railway fully from Wladiwostok to Moskov in 2019, grandios railway also, with one weeck Stop on the Baikal. Very friendly people we found there. Two weecks ago we Ride the Southwest Chief in the same direktion. I believe this Film, ist a Message for freedom.

Thanx for reminding me to do so also. BTW, don't know what type of sounds you like to sleep to but I bet - could be wrong - that you may not have considered the drone of planes like B17 bombers or sci/fi space ambient sounds. These are in MY white noise/ambient playlists. Variety you know🙂

the pricing is actually not too bad if you travel in coach like I did. this exact stretch from La Junta to Albuquerque is roughly $40 per person for an 8-hour trip and going all the way from Chicago to LA is about $145 per person in coach. I used points though, so I actually did this trip pretty much for free. glad you enjoyed!
I traveled this route in the late fifties and early sixties every summer to visit my grandparents in Chicago. Brought back memories. Thanks for sharing this.
I don’t play drums but it’s a pretty easy rhythm to notate. and conducting in 4 fits the clacks surprisingly well, though probably not surprising since these cars are 4 axles.

The first few miles of the Raton subdivision are really nostalgic: telegraph line, searchlight signals and jointed rail, which gives us the "rhythm of the rails" until 9:13.
I throughly enjoyed this, although much of it I played at 2X speed. There's A LOT of history along this desolate stretch and it was very educational following along on google earth. A friend had showed me a remote 'shack' he had lived in almost 40 years ago as a child and I was able to spot it on the video. Thanks for your effort and for posting.
This is an absolutely beautiful video of a section of the ATSF railroad that is an excellent glimpse of the southwest portion of the USA. I traveled this line in 1976 and 1981 in a trip from Worcester, MA to Fresno, CA. I do have many photos of what you have videoed and the entire line was complete semaphore signals. Thank you for bringing back some pleasant memories.

I did the other way on this trip. NY to LA. burned through most of my points to do this trip. coach all 3 nights, didn’t have any big problems sleeping, especially on the chief. definitely a trip for the memories!
The CNJ heritage loco in the opening montage freaked me out for a second. When I took the Chief, that was the power leading the local train that started my journey. Yes, it was a long trip

I fell asleep while the train was traveling through an arid desert landscape. When I woke up, the train was in the snow. This is one aspect of train travel I love; that you can wake up to a scene outside completely different from when you fell asleep 💤
At 4:25, if you see the track going off to the left, thats the track that leads to the York Canyon coal mine. It was after that shut down that BNSF ended all freights on this line. Even back then only trains BNSF ran were the coal trains and a pair of Denver to Barstow manifests
Is that what the noise is. Thought it was square wheels. Rail joints must be every 10 feet ;-( Why is it that European rails are far quieter. I can't image trying to sleep on this train.
You lucked out with a good clean window, although when you hold it close to the glass it often compensates. Plus, you don’t have the heavy tinting like with the side windows!
If I was a locomotive engineer atsf 2926 and this route is perfect for the steam excursion I love the scenery and ood railroad equipment is still remaining in operation.
All that beautiful Santa Fe Southern equipment painted in that horrid "SKY Railway" paint at Lamy. Such a shame they did that. But great video. Thanks for sharing!
That route between La Junta and Albuquerque was sold to the State of New Mexico by BNSF. The purpose was for a commuter rail operation between Belen NM and Sante Fe NM, the Railrunner. Albuquerque lost rail jobs due to industry shutdowns. I was a Conductor for BNSF at the time, around 2008, and that move cost a lot of railroading jobs and was the demise of many rail-serviced industries in Albuquerque and North. It affected me due to the high number of senior railroaders bumping into my yards at Belen and Albuquerque. The rail is leased for AMTRAK operations, no freights run that route except for various spotting jobs and rail car storage. Coal and grain trains that had used that rail now go through Amarillo. The State of NM had plans to utilize the track for rail service up to Trinidad but never went anywhere North of Sante Fe! BNSF has a buy-back agreement should the commuter operations cease. Back in 2002 when i took this route you couldnt do a video like this because back then we had boxcars and road railers on our train. Southwest Chief looked more like a freight train with passenger cars up front.

suctioned it to the glass, I’d never be able to stand there for 7 hours straight lol. other people joined me in that area at times since my phone isn’t that intrusive.
One last question - please tell me how you filmed so many hours with your phone. Did you use the new Iphone 15 pro max with an EXTERNAL ssd drive? How did you power the phone for so long. Thank you so much for your help!
I started filming with full battery and plugged in a power bank in the middle to top it back off to full. I film in 1080p so everything could be stored on-device on my phone.
Thanks for sharing. When visiting California, did you consider Cal Poly San Luis Obispo for your math or engineering degree? I taught the Railway Engineering course there 2018 - 2023 (under the Civil Engineering/Transportation program). I think Cal Poly Pomona, Fresno State U, and USC offer railway courses, but for that major you have go to the Midwest or East Coast.
nice! yeah I'm mostly focusing back east but just went out to a few schools in the LA area and to ride the train if I'm being honest. I consider some of these but I still prefer being closer to home.

When it comes to travel, we like to enjoy the sights of this massive country we live in. There's a lot to see here, and plenty of time to see it, too. Nothing wrong with enjoying breathtaking views, right?
I could have recorded west to Gallup and Winslow, AZ but wasn’t sure how far my phone could make it before it ran out of storage. I recorded some side view clips but not an uncut ride. ABQ is also an extended crew change and service stop so it was a logical place to stop.
Still enjoyed it. I’ve been on this train. I usually watch hobo videos, but I will check out more of yours. Hard to believe 100+ thousand have watched this. I guess there’s more crazy people like me than I thought.
Considering the wealth of the US, building an additional three-track high-speed line along the old freight track from Chicago to LA, dedicated exclusively to passenger travel, should be a child's play.
I took the Starlight from LA to Washington and the Zephyr to Denver from Emeryville. Great trips. This one is the only one left from So Cal.. that I have not traveled on. I see what you mean. I do that went playing the video privately from my editor but I can't use the sound and I have to re-export a massive file. Zephyr and Starlight are definitely on my bucket list for the future and I plan on doing similar videos like this one through the Rockies whenever I get around to taking the Zephyr.
Well yeah, the gendarme country protecting the free world is the less developed in transportation and standard of living. It is a usual phenomenon in auto repair, tailoring etc.
I've watched many train videos from all over the world. The landscapes in this video are depressing. New Mexico isn't a state I'd rush to visit. The video, however, was done quite nicely. It's just the landscape that's not appealing.
didn't film from the rear view after Albuquerque. instead, I chilled in the sightseer lounge and treated myself to traditional dining for the last dinner onboard. didn't wanna worry about a my phone falling off the mount or running out of storage or battery. plus as the lighting got dimmer there was more glare unless I would stand there to press my phone against the window, which I can only do for so long at a time.

It's an illusion based on how high off the rails you are. The train was going between 80 and 90mph--on jointed rail!

didn't film from the rear view after Albuquerque. instead, I chilled in the sightseer lounge and treated myself to traditional dining for the last dinner onboard. didn't wanna worry about a my phone falling off the mount or running out of storage or battery. plus as the lighting got dimmer there was more glare unless I would stand there to press my phone against the window, which I can only do for so long at a time.
