Portland to Boston Full Ride Behind the 90406 Aboard Amtrak Downeaster 688 7/5/24
Taken aboard Amfleet I 82997 with Phase III Heritage NPCU #90406 leading and Midnight Blue 50th Anniversary P42DC #100 trailing.
Great trip down from Maine. We pass the former Pan Am Railways Rigby Yard with some appropriate Pan Am Power sitting there before transitioning to the marshes and the beach town of Old Orchard Beach. We blast through numerous Maine towns with great samples of 90406's horn. The train arrives into Boston just after 9 pm with North Station and the I-93 bridge all lit up. A real treat to be led by the 40th Anniversary NPCU and be pulled by the Midnight Blue unit on the same consist.

Farewell to Amtrak's Capitol Limited: South Bend to Washington, DC in Superliner Coach
Просмотров 2,4 тыс.Месяц назад
As of the posting of this video, you'll have two weeks to ride this train in its current form. Starting November 10, Train 29 and 30 will be renumbered to 40 and 41 and will be extended to Miami as the Floridian. It will have Amfleets instead of Superliners which means the views won't be as nice and the ride will be a little rougher. We board the train from South Bend, IN and get ready to sleep...

Taken aboard Ethan Allen Express Train 290, Amfleet I 82669, on 10/12/24 with P32AC-DM #711 leading. Excellent scenery as always on this line, especially with the foliage. I've wanted to do this for a while now and was finally able to get a complete ride out the back window. We begin doing 110 mph out of Albany before winding through the Hudson Highlands and descending into the New York suburbs...

I'm back! Before heading to a football game, I had a few hours to spend in Elkhart. Saw plenty of foreign power, NS #4822, and Amtrak #108 which led my train in, as well as toured the New York Central museum. On the way in, we also saw some Phase VII Geeps in Albany and on the way back, we saw some YN2 CSX engines and CSX #1853 in Cumberland. Discord Server: discord.gg/8vjXsEtsVa

Taken aboard Surfliner cab car 6951 with SC-44 #2119 pushing. Terrible sun angles for most of the way but the ocean views should make up for it. Early Afternoon Rush Hour Action at Newark Penn Station 9/27/23
Enjoyed the ride. Nice video. 👍
Most of these stations - especially between Harrisburg and Paoli - or between Paoli and Philadelphia - have never seen AMTRAK service - Exton is an ideal example - when did Exton gain AMTRAK service? (Paoli was connected to New York as far back as the Age of Steam via the 20th Century Limited - I myself took AMTRAK to Paoli a grand total of once - it is repeatable today - not just to Paoli, but to Exton or any Keystone Service train via a feeder train that meets Keystone Service trains at 30th Street Station. But how much demand is there for AMTRAK service - at even longer term stations such as Paoli or Lancaster for that matter, let alone Exton?
I’m not sure why Exton only gets eastbound Pennsylvanian and not the westbound. I know that all stops between Paoli and Lancaster are generally pretty brief with only a handful on/offs per train since SEPTA serves most of the stations. Lancaster always gets a ton of ridership from the Amish, especially on the Pennsylvanian where they can connect to the now Floridian to head to the Midwest. I’d say the Keystone is essentially a commuter train from Philly to Harris which explains all the stops.
Thanks for posting this video. I'll be taking this route next month.
W scenery
Last time I was on an Amtrak train was before I had a driver's license, so before 2007. It was from Newport News, VA to 30th St. Station in Philadelphia. Hopefully one of these days I can take one several states away instead of driving. I find train rides to be much less stressful than driving
The CNJ heritage loco in the opening montage freaked me out for a second. When I took the Chief, that was the power leading the local train that started my journey. Yes, it was a long trip
@@gonzoengineering4894 I did a coast-to-coast trip. NY-LA via Chicago. all in coach for 67 hours.

Could you do Acela 2169? It stops at New Haven right?
the schedule doesn't work out, I've done 2193 which skips New Haven.
1:26:26 - 1:26:27 You can watch the direction of the switch change back to allowing through traffic on track 1!
1:06:23 A railfan spotted? 😅
40:39 To the left of the track your train is on, is that ... a buried piece of track? I ... didn't expect to see that, wonder if it is from more recent stuff, or if it's actually a leftover spur from the old Russell, Burdsall & Ward factory that used to be in Port Chester.
16:49 -17:23 & 17:25 - 17:29 To the right the RoW (with catenary bridges!) where the New York, Westchester & Boston traveled.
2:19:31 - 2:19:32 Ohhh, ex-Metroliner cab!
love riding Amtrak
love riding this Amtrak route
You did the same video in the morning from Los Angeles to San Diego, filming out of the right side of the train. On this trip, you should have stayed on the right side to give the opposite scenery. And you wouldn't have had the sun in the shot.
i know, but you wouldn't have been able to see anything on the other side because it would just be tall cliffs.
@nathanjiang100 Only for a short stretch in San Clemente. And I would argue that a flat ocean washed out by the sun is just as boring as a cliff.
@@vincejackson730 to each their own
The ship is a Wasp class LHD. It lands Marines on the beach using aircraft and landing craft.
It’s not going away dude-it’s just gonna be out for at least the next 3 years so that Amtrak can do Sandy-related repairs to the East River Tunnels as well as to allow other trains to get their Superliners back (like the TE, which hasn’t had a dining car in over 4 years)
I talked with someone who works at Amtrak's HQ and he said that if ridership is strong they may make it permanent. also even if they bring the cap back, there's no guarantee that it'll have superliners again; they could just use Amfleet sets so more superliners are saved for west coast.
Well, if there's any consulation to all of this, we're going to get dining car service back finally.
true, but as a coach passenger it won't really matter for me (though I do ususally treat myself to traditional dining on my last meal onboard if they allow coach passenger to dine)
@@nathanjiang100 Traditionally, everyone had access to the dining car regardless of ticket (sleeping car or coach). I always enjoyed having dinner and a cocktail while returning home to Cumberland after conducting business in the district. With any luck, this option will be available once again and I won't have to rely on Taco Bell or McDonalds in Union Station for a choke-in-puke...
@@StillPlaysWithModelTrains1956 that's the case on western routes but on Silver Star/Silver Meteor currently they only do it when they have a lot of space in the dining car.
Man I’ll miss the Silver Stars that passed here
Too bad Amtrak elected not to use South Bend's Union Station.
yeah, the tiny amshak is rather depressing
Sweet catches dude I have to hit up Elkhart
yeah it’s really neat. west of Elkhart like Chesterton or Porter you get a lot more foreign power
Very nice video
Heck, if they just make all the platforms at Union Station level boarding, I'll count that as a win. Honestly in this day and age that should be the bare minimum to meet ADA compliance.
they can't because of VRE
Union Station DC. Marvelous station that has gotten quite run down in many respects and is due for a major renovation (assuming all the planning commissions can agree on the final design. The station and yard has a fond place in my heart as one of my grandfathers was a US Postal clerk working a railway postal run out of Union Station DC to NYC and back along the Pennsy RR railway lines. He retired from that job a few years before they discontinued the service. When I was very young my father and I went over there and got some pictures of one of the last crews and cars working the run for his and grandmothers 50th anniversary celebration. Some of the old timers actually remembered him and posed for some photos. The station has certainly undergone some changes over the years. I myself rode one of the last runs of the Southern Railways "Southern Crescent" into the station from New Orleans It would have been one of the very last runs of the train as within a month it had been turned over to Amtrak. And I assure you that the service level wasn't even close to the same as when the Southern ran it. IN any case Union station is due for a very exciting refit, although one of the changes I would most like to see won't be happening. That change is an expansion of the First Street tunnel that would allow it to accommodate Superliner or Taller freight cars so that the Auto Train to Florida could get north of the river and Amtrak could run Superliners south of Union station. Talk about an East Coast bottleneck! Never happen though. The clearance just doesn't exist to do it. Although they are putting in a new Long Bridge south into Virginia, which should speed up both VRE and Amtrak trains using the old FR&P right of way to Richmond Virginia as well as trains using the Norfolk & Southerns route from Union Station south and west from the old Alexandria yards.Oh well, half a loaf is better than none they say.Getting the freight and passenger traffic separated at that point will improve things a bit.
Although you sort of blew through Brunswick, if anyone is in the area in the fall be sure to visit for the annual "Brunswick Days" Arts Festival. A celebration of Blue Grass and Appalachian Music and Crafts. The town also has (at least the last time I visited) a very nice Model Train Club with a display open to the public at regular intervals. Good food and drink too. Also the last time I visited they offered a short scenic train ride from Brunswick to Harper's Ferry along the spur line track (The other bridge you saw as you were crossing out of Harper's Ferry which actually travels along the Shenandoah river Potomac and through the remains of the old arsenal and powder works (now all ruins) to the gravel quarries just outside Harper's Ferry to the north. A very nice way to get a view of the historic section of the National Historic site. Fun Fact: during very high floods of the rivers, CSX will park a train of freight cars full of gravel on the bridges across the river to anchor them in place.
@@lawrencewild2523 always love a good model railroad! I blew through a lot of footage and the video was still nearly 50 mins long! tried to get all the defect detectors in which is something new that I’ve tried now that I have a scanner
Ahhh Harper Ferry. Once upon a time the site of a National arsenal and critical to the production of munitions prior to the Civil War. The Site of John Brown's famous raid. And nowadays a National Historic Site run by the National Park Service. Well worth a visit for the many period buildings in it. Sitting in a very tight valley and overlooked by high bluffs from both the Virginia and Maryland sides it was a natural target of both Union and Confederate forces. Gen. "Stonewall" Jackson once said of it that he would rather attack it a dozen times than defend it even once. With so many tall bluffs around it, it could be easily shelled by both sides. I know of no other site that changed hands so many times over the course of the Civil War. Fun Fact: The Priest of St. Peters Church (which sits overlooking the town) Father Michael Costello, during the Civil War, protected the church from being shelled by flying the British Flag from the church steeple. Since neither side wanted to anger the British, neither side ever shelled the church. It was thus able to stay open and neutral throughout the Civil War. It was the only church in the town that was left untouched.
yep bring right on the border with a union state (MD), confederate state (VA) and union-sympathizing breakaway from a confederate state (WV) certainly put in right in the path of all the action of the war!
In Martinsburg did you notice the double roundhouse to the left of the tracks? That's the site of the Martinsburg B&O Museum/Martinsburg Cultural Center. Or at least that's what it's trying to become. Like most community/volunteer projects it needs money and a lot of work. They have big plans for it's future development. Right now they rent the restored roundhouse out for Events (weddings, receptions, concerts, etc) and the central machine shop/repair building is the site of the Martinsburg Farmers Market on the weekends. The station itself houses a very nice set of historical exhibits and displays, and the town has some very nice historic homes and small museums. Worth a weekend visit.
@@lawrencewild2523 yeah hopefully it all works out there
IN Cumberland you missed a treat. The Western Maryland Scenic Railroad was off to the Right Hand side of the train (given your direction of travel.) You might just have been able to see the station as you pulled out of the Cumberland Station, except somebody parked a CSX freight there. Shame! It is a beautiful old station well worth a visit. The lower level hosts a museum dedicated to the C&O canal and the old Cumberland road. The County historical society also has a very nice museum dedicated to the history of Cumberland. Discover why it was called "The Queen City" of Maryland.
Hard to believe. "29 and 30" goes back a long time. "The Capitol Limited" hearkens back to B&O days.
yeah certainly a train that many will miss, even though they say this Floridian thing will only last like 3 years, they’re probably gonna keep the Cap with Amfleets if they bring it back at all
It will be back.
I talked with someone from Amtrak HQ and they are leaving open the possibility of making the Floridian permanent. Also, even if they bring back the Cap it'll probably retain Amfleets due to the equipment shortage.
@@nathanjiang100 Oh ok thanks for letting me know
Awesome video. The Silver Star will be missed as well
This train will be the Floridian starting November 10 of this year.
oops, just fixed that

When did Amtrak add new lighting under the West Side overbuild? This is great! In older videos I would just skip this part because it was too dark to see anything.
I’m not sure but I think it may have been during the whole parking deck calamity if you remember that
Why doesnt it use third rail on the metro north portion?
P32s aren’t built to use electric mode for more than 15 minutes and Amtrak would have to pay MN to use it

Hello and greetings from Salvador, Bahia, Brazil! An excelent video, thank you. Nice to see that from New York (NY) to New Haven (CT) Amtrak has retained many of the old catenary poles from New Haven Railroad era, although of course the old triangular catenary wires were replaced by modern standards.
What's the speed limit on the upper portion of the Hudson Line?
110 mph from CP 142 to CP 123, 85 from CP 123 to CP 89, and 95 from CP 89 to CP 75
