- In this DVD Nate Andrade shares some of his secrets on how to perform many of the most extreme bo tricks in and out of competition today.. This video was video taped and edited by myself and my company Black and Blue Video Productions, Inc.
Thank you for that retract. I was trying to make a point not a dig at you, sorry if it came across that way. I just read so many people who look at a freestyle video and complain because there is no combat application to it. Freestyle is not made for combat it is to build attributes that could be used in anything. I have seen Nate do traditional strikes too this is just for extreme katas.
I know I'm just playing, but ya gotta chuckle a lil bit when Nate looks into the camera so serious and says "The Circus Act" that's the one that got me, the moves still rawk
It's pretty cool. I'm sort of conflicted though. I've been told to never let go of my weapon like that, but at the same time this is a great exercise for mastering your bo.
Bravo!!!!
I agree but you won't forget it will you ? Marketing is the name of the game.
He would not use that Bo staff in a self defense situation. It is for competition only. He is a trained in the martial arts and he does traditional and sport martial arts tournaments.
No problem.
And best of luck with your staff training.
Sick as hell dude i wanna learn
@coreyshipe There is Slomo on the instructional DVD this came off of.
thats clever stuff...thanks
I do Shorin Ryu, my Karate school is called Matsubayshi-Ryu. Okinawan.
I think you might be confusing Marcial Arts and Marcial Sports. Marcial Sports, like any other sport, are designed to train your body, and maybe your speed, etc. Marcial Arts not only train your body, it also trains your mind and your spirit. There is a phrase in Shorin Ryu: Karate and Zen as unit. That explains it all, and that's why i think these tricks are a waste of time for someone who gives his life to Marcial Arts.
Slick moves!
i love the bo staff its my wepon of choice, 300 shaolin monks fended of a whole army with nothing more then bo staffs 1100 yearsa ago, the bow staff cud be used to block arrows with the spining motion, ive taught my self the bo staff over the past 10 years and wud realy love to no wer i can go to perfect my techniques as i cant find a dojo around here that teaches the bo staff! ill make a video soon and upload it
@karatevideoguy Nice tricks and nice skills. congratulation for your championship wins. I am a hapkido practitioner and i saw a coment about another hapkido guy. Im trully disapointed with it. im sry for some ppl dont pay the respect we learn from our masters. btw in MOO MOO KWAN HKD (Korean hapkido) we learn about weapons and my one is the staff. thanks again for sharing your knowledge. Best regards from Rio de Janeiro, Brasil.
You gotta name them something
I've been practicing Taekwondo for 4 years. I recently got my 2nd degree black belt, and I'm training to be an instructor.
As for staff training, I think I started with that in my spare time, about a year and a half ago.
I also train with bokken, tonfa, escrimas, and I just started with the 3 sectional staff.
lol, the 3 sectional scares me. I think I'll take that one really slow until I get a good feel for it. XD
Yup, without it the business dies or worse, it's forgotten. I need to come up with a cool move and name it, I'm leaning toward,"The V-Man Special" it's gotta nice ring to it ;-)
im not verry fond of tricking but that shoulder neck chest move was fucking DOPE!!
This is freestyle open sport martial arts which has nothing to do with fighting it is all for entertainment.
thanks for breaking this stuff down for us beginners. my next video will be bo staff. i'll be sure to include a move or two. thanks nate
@karatevideoguy
I was just passing through (trying to self-teach bo staff) and I have to completely agree with you on this point. I took about 8 years of TaeKwonDo and the most important thing I learned was to respect of other people. In my humble opinion, if all an instructor teaches is how to beat someone, they've failed as an instructor.
P.S. You wouldn't happen to know any good bo staff schools in the Dallas/FortWorth area?
Late reply I know
Look for kobudo schools
❤❤❤very nice
órale, asombroso, me gustó.
Yes I agree that these moves are not designed for combat, but you are stating the obvious. Does he talk about defending off attackers or fighting anyone with these moves NO. This is for competition and it is for attribute building, not every move you do in the martial arts is designed strictly for combat. Some moves and techniques are designed to help build attributes that may help you in any situation. So people please understand when you state the obvious you only make yourself look petty.
staff contact juggling... the most basic of basics... tough stuff
I can say the same thing about you! I am just responding to your know it all comments and now you are telling me to shut up because you say I am a know it all and that I should just agree with you. Sorry that will not happen. Martial Arts sport is here to stay and is good for the Martial Arts.
I have been reading that you can get a Bo that's called a Toothstick which should be smaller than a regular Bo. is that what you are using in this Video?
Its' just that the Bo does not look like it is 180cm. :)
@walatalalaw - Well said.
Because in Spanish, it's Marcial
And... Martial, well, a little mistake.
Anyway, MarTial Arts have already a use! I said it before, it's not just about learning how to kick some asses, that is what guns are made for, it's about you and the enemies within yourself. That's when Karate turns into Karate-Do, it's a path, not just a lot of techniques.
In my dojo we also do Za-Zen. We sit every day, 30 minutes. Then we train. Ken Zen Ichi Nyo: Karate and Zen as unit.
@Canonxx haha, i know right, he puts so much emphasis on I!!
Yeah, any weapon that you could easily find on the streets is a good choice in weapon practice. Escrima, bo, maybe even tonfa are good, practical weapons.
'Course, open hand should always be the main focus in any martial artist's training. Most forget that the hands, feet, knees, elbows, etc., are all weapons too.
cool
What style of Martial Arts do you practice? And why in your opinion is a Martial Artist not allowed to practice any other Martial Arts except the kind you do to be considered a valid Martial Artist? This in my opinion is an incorrect statement as there are many different ways to practice the Martial Arts, Tai Chi, Qi Chong, Wu Shu, Traditional Japanese, Korean, Okinawan, Chinese, MMA, or Extreme, these are all Martial Arts maybe not like the one you practice but they are valid none the less.
Hapkido is a pretty good Martial Art what makes you show so much disrespect for others I do not know, but why not try to act like a True Martial Artist and stop disrespecting someone because they do not practice the same as you.
This is not about combat it is freestyle. Does he ever once say anything about combat. Why must everytime a martial artist use a weapon, must it be for combat, there is something called attributes. Look it up if you don't know what it is.
i can do almost all of these and i've never been taught how to actually use a bo, i've taught myself
@regoledenapoli Not true in every case this can depend on your abilities an the weight of the staff.
But you are right about it not being meant for UNREASONABLE VIOLENCE} It's meant to be used as a last resort to protect oneself or another.
It's not the martial art, it's the person who practiced it
°° TROS SUPER °°
No wish to offend anyone, but if these are most advanced, then the art itself isn't that hard ;-) And yes, they are not useful in fight situation, but they are great for coordination. If you can do these, you will easily control the staff so it strikes right where it should. Best wishes staff spinners and staff fighters!
how long has nate been tricking for?
I am sorry you do not understand that this is not kobudo it is freestyle open sport martial arts which has nothing to do with fighting it is all for entertainment. He never said this was Traditional Karate you just assume that everything has to be traditional Martial Arts or it is not worth anything and that is very small minded.
how do u expect us to do this
Yes i do, i pay for it. I train 3hs a day 4 times a week, and do all the za zen i want to. And believe me, it's harder than being sit 30 min. with your eyes shut. (and your eyed must be actually opened)
My Sensei, btw, is a 78 year old man, who practices all the hours i just said. (and more). Personally, i admire him. And he sits for hours (even days). Oh, and za zen is for free =) everyone can go.
@1996Matthewj I actually can use the first 2 moves perfectly fine the other few are hit an miss,
It's extremely impressive work thats for sure.
Hell the only reason I can use moves close but a little different than his are training with staff's from an extremely young age 11 or so now I'm 23... I train more for combat than showmanship though I appreciate both. An you probably couldn't have said what you just did any better... very few ppl can use this in real life.
Technique will only get you so far. You need physical strength to accompany any martial arts training, if you ever hope to be able to defend yourself in a fight. Same goes if you only work on strengthening, not technique.
And you shouldn't rely on your staff in a fight. What happens if you were to lose it, or if you're attacked when you didn't have it with you? It's best to train empty hand before concentrating on weapons.
@ShotokanKarateMan1 if you are a true martial artist you should be open to all forms of martial arts including some that you may not like. you have to have respect for those who participate in that form of martial arts.
just putting it out there all real martial arts have tricks even traditionally they were used to show of speed, skill and strangth in order to recruit more people into the armys and schools of the time not all of course but many.
Look for bushido on wikipedia.
It.is so.Amazing
I was wondering what are the dimensions and material of that bo staff?
its a toothpick bo (gets thinner at the ends) made from graphite (very light but durable) the staff is taller than him so im guessing 6tf in length. ( most staffs are either 5ft or 6ft) depending on how tall you are
hope that helps. you want one too? for tricking im guessing
@lunasxkillingxspree A real martial artist respects all people dude.
Is there anywhere that these videos could be streamed. Like the whole thing not just this little teaser
Unfortunately no I only have them on DVD. I am trying to find someone to rebuild the black and blue video website and I would like to have them streamed there.
Sure, totally right, but still it's not a Bo stick (at least not a traditional one), and i can't help it, i find it useless.
And, what do you mean about attribute building? As far as i know, as a marcial artist, and at least in my karate style, every move is designed to attack or to block, even the intermediaries moves are supposed to block or attack faster and better.
Anyway, no one can say someone is a marcial artist because of being able to do that. It can be done by a cheerleader too XD
CenturyMartialArts(dot)com.
That's where I got mine. I would recommend a Tapered Hardwood Bo to start out with. It's inexpensive, extremely durable, and well balanced. Plus, the heavier weight will help a lot with building up the arm muscles you'll use for staff training.
When you get to the more showy stuff, like in this video, you should go for a good graphite bo. They're kinda expensive, so only buy one if you're going to keep up staff training.
That explains it, on a rly direct way :D
Yeah, but you're not always going to have it with you. And that's when, if at all, you're going to be attacked. People don't attack someone who's carrying a big stick, they attack someone who has no weapons, and appears to be a defenseless target.
You wouldn't pick a fight with someone carrying a machine gun, would you? It's the same with any other non-concealable weapon.
who says the tricks wouldn't be useful in a fight(depending on who you're fighting). I'm sure that if you started doing tricks like this as you were getting in a fight with a punk on the street, it would strike some fear in them. Kinda like how kamae display "attitudes"/inermost feelings/convey...things (is that enough slashes?).
@lunasxkillingxspree martial arts isnt all about fighting
Slow=mo would be helpful in this video
Wow, all the haters need to realize, there is training with the bo staff for combat, and there is training for the bo staff in competitions, specifically for show. show=showy moves, get it? stop being douches and appreciate the time this dude had to practice to get these moves down. i know almost none of us can do that.
he looks like the evil of karate kid III xd
I feel sorry for you that you are so narrow minded. But if that is how you wnat to live your life enjoy.
Yes Martial Arts was also designed for combat as well as a way of life. The Samurai practiced writing, art, and other things that helped them with their Martial Arts. This is for competition and has nothing to do with combat. This is for demos. So please get off of you high horse and stop trying to make your self seem more important by bad mouthing someone else. Yes we all know you traditional elitists think yours is the only way but wake up and realize there are other martial arts out there.
damn you're the dinner impossible guy!
I think it's a good thing that martial arts give birth to sports, but I think the arts made for war and battle should stay pure. it's good to make sports out of martial arts, but they shouldn't be called martial arts, they should be called something like martial sports.
mockery of kobudo
those moves are soo flippin awesome ..... but what's with the names? lmao hey I'm just sayin hahaha
@lunasxkillingxspree Ehh....
anybody know the name of any association governing the use of the bo staff?
Why did he announce his name like people wouldn't know?
@miyor123
Quite Simple!.......... An American!
xma is more for entertainment
I personaly dont see anything wrong with martial arts becoming a sport, i think it was a good idea however its not for everyone so some people train in martial arts and dont use it in the sport others do each to their own And as for guns i think theres more skill needed than jus pulling the trigger you need to combine combat environment and tactics with training so you dont get killed unless your the type of person to pull a gun on someone in the street thats just cowardly and dishonerable
its for show not budo, of course most of it is impractical thats why he calls them tricks, if he called it karate & started doing mad twirling tricks then he would making a mockery of karate.
@Canonxx he's lying....know why? because I'm!!!!....Nate Andrade....lol. j/k
@maggiefatcher I don't know why I lol'ed.
I would wreck this guy at stick fighting, check out my vids.
All the tricks this guy does are useless in a real fight, It looks cool and etc, but it's a waste of time for a marcial artist.
Besides, a real Bo is much longer (i'm talking about 1.80 - 2.00 mts) and heavier. They aren't as easy to manipulate as this guy's 1.20 toy stick XD. Not even a Jo...
whats the martial application.
This not for combat it is tournaments and demos. These are techniques you would add to your kata for tournament competition or for demos
