Nice video. Your apologies for it being brief aren't required; the simplicity of the video makes it quick and easy to see the steps required, with layman's terms used which is undoubtedly a benefit to anyone not in the building game. Nice result as well. Thanks.
Well done it's a tough hot dirty job converting a loft , I think the most important part is explaining the importance of making sure your staircase position is compliant. I've 2m headroom on the stairs which is achievable because your stair is below the ridge. Also some people don't realise the regs state you need a 30min fire door on the loft room and existing doors may need to be up graded or replaced by fire doors giving 20mins protection. The layout of the existing house is also critical. If you have an open plan layout at ground floor you may have to install sprinklers and a fire door at the head of the stairs.
Thank you, yeah it is a challenge to meet all the regs the stair case position was a difficult decision but like you say easy clear headspace and less disruption to the floor below. Thank you for your comments 😊
Sadly iv moved house now, we put a king bed under the velux and wardrobe plus dressing table on the opposite side. We sold the house as a 3 bedroom house and made a good profit x 🏡😊
No.. I followed my architects advise at the time. Please read up on current building regs before starting this task. Ask an architect to look over what needs to be done 😊
I need to get this done on my own, however, I need the professionals to come for 2 things. 1- remove the roof supports that lean on the two middle walls. 2- electrics. Apart from this, I'd love fo think that I'm capable of getting all the rest done on my own. I used to think RSJ's are mandatory, but I better check this again now.
Is there any way I could get a closer look at the plans please? I have a similar layout and am curious as to which direction the stairs are running. I am guessing the stairs on ground floor run up from the same side the front door and extension (right hand side as you view front)
Hi Dan, great video so well done! I've been referring to the video a lot over the last year or two and have finally started on my conversion. It looks like my house is exactly the same as yours in this video so i was just wondering how you managed to not need a fire door to the loft room? It's sounding like i might need one which will drastically reduce the usability if the room. Thanks. Kev
i have 3x2 ceiling joists in my loft spaced about 14in apart and i want to board it out for storage but want to strengthen the floor , i was thinking about screwing 3x2 on top of the existing 3x2 to add strength making them 6x2 does this sound ok , or is doing a criss cross method better +
It might be better fastening the extra timber along side so you don't loose height, also you could then pin them together with shorter lengths the opposite way. Hope this helps 😊
@Nathan Barnes I have a truss roof, and couple of builders have said I will need steel beams. Can you tell me how much it would cost for having steel beams, flooring and stairs done professionally. I am pretty confident that I could insulate and board the loft.
Wow your building inspector must be a friend,100mm insulation its now 275mm,no fire door to stair case or fire boards and joist hung off timber not steel or on wallplate your a lucky lad Daniel.
Can't believe inspector passed it. No steels! No multi layer foil insulation! No fire doors! No fire rated plasterboard / 15mm plasterboard! No fire escape window!
Dave Judd surely his architect specified all materials and fixing methods, inline with whatever regs were at the time. Of the inspector has refused to sign it off a claim could be made against the architect. Also the new builds next to me have no fire door between the first floor la landing and 2nd floor bedroom, just an open staircase as this guy has done. It must be acceptable if it's being done in brand new houses?
Hi. I found your video interesting and helpful. Thanks for posting it. I'm not too far away from you and I wonder who you recommend for the plastering? I'm currently looking to do a loft conversion in Gainsborough.
@@tubegee01 I'm in a terraced house do you think I will need to plaster the walls I was thinking of leaving them as bear brick or will that be bad for installation?
I love the loft conversion, you did a great job. I just wondered though; was there no other option other than putting the handrails in what looks like the centre of the room? It appears to take up a lot of room.
I have the same layout of house, I’m considering where stairs might go and with this size of house there’s very little choice. Main consideration is that you’re conserving space on 1st floor by placing stairs above stairs below.
Yes that was the reason for doing it this way, it just caused less disruption to the house. You also need a certain amount of headspace above as you walk up the stairs and a landing area at the base and top... Lots of different factors to consider the downside to having them in the centre is that it takes up the middle of the room. For us it separated the room into two half's.
All builds are different, it's really important that you get a professional architect in and they will workout the structure of your loft and advise on the correct way to go about supporting the floor/walls.
Hi Great job friend I wondered how much space or gap you have got between new floor joist and existed joist? Which nuts and bolt did you used what size are they? Thanks
Thank you very much and thank you for taking the time to watch my vid, around and inch gap between the ceiling and floor joists as for the bolts it depends what size timbers you would be fastening but the.bigger the better. Rather them be to big than to small.
I have just moved into a bungalow with loft conversion, has full building regs fire door at the bottom etc. Also have en suite shower and toilet but for the life of me I cannot find where the waste water would go pipe wise I mean. Is it a different setup in a bungalow?
chalky cliff you might have a macerator that chops your ‘deposits’ up,this allow for a much smaller waste pipe diameter. No way near as big as the standard 100mm pipe you’re looking for.
Hi Dan I know this vid is a few years old just a couple of questions , did you have a chimney breast in the loft? If so how did you get around the issue fitting the joists to it. Also what size timbers did you use and how did you get them into the loft? Thanks Jake
Hi the chimney was brick just like the walls of the house so I fastened then straight to the chimney brest, obviously they were a tad shorter than the others. The timber for the floor was 3inch x 7inch c24 timbers and we pulled each joist through the bathroom window 1 at a time then carried them through the staircase opening, hope this helps
Why must they think your daft Stuart? Do you do your own dental work, surgery, mechanical work, conveyancing, accountancy, electrical work, gas engineering, hair dressing, chiropidy, window cleaning, brickwork, painting and decorating, tailoring, train driving, gardening, Travel agency? Do they all think your daft? Because Dan did his own loft conversion, that somehow justifies calling all builders rip off merchants or cowboys. Also its a Kids room at best, where is the double bed and the wardrobes going to go, any one over 6ft is going to have to stoop as soon as they step round the staircase. maybe nursery or storage is more appropriate.
Buildings regs are constantly changing Dan, you have no sooner finished than they change again, absolute nightmare. Good effort though matey. Well done for even attempting it. Not sure I have the skills however or the bottle.
Hi mate, Excellent video well done. Just wanted to ask , what advice can you give of there are already joices in the loft is it possible to build over them with new ones if they are too thin, don't really want to start pulling them out as it would create too much work?

Why did you cut the top of the stair string, surely this holds the nosing in place and helps with the structural aspect when sitting on the trimmer joist?
Hello Daniel, nice vid. Could I ask what was the timbers you used to bolt to the walls to hang your joists from, and could you confirm that your new floor was only held up by that method. Also what did you sit your staircase onto as it looks to run parallel to your new floor joists. Thanks.
Good vid there, was just wondering if you have to pay to have an inspector come out at different stages to witness things are complete, and if so how many stages? Chhers
