Here’s about the simplest way I can compare the two. I have a TRX four bronco. A red cat Gen 8.. TRX is more expensive but is much smoother altogether a better quality truck. The red cat is slightly better in performance I feel then the bronco. Although my red cat does have the BFG krawler in predator compound and those are the best tires
FYI, Trxxas sells a battery switch adapter level when installed allows you to push the lever up from the bottom of the chassis. It’s a simple screw on mod.
thanks for that info much appreciated as I didn't know that. I'd heard you could buy a 3d printed solution on ebay. However I note the words 'Traxxas sells' - many would say this should be designed in and not sold as an extra. Indeed I'm using polite words, others are not so forgiving towards traxxas (For bits like that where they sell a solution to a problem they sold you when they sold you the car!). I will look to get one as I'm forever putting the body on without turning it on...thanks again
On the Gen 8 shock tower adjustabilty. One nice thing is you can easily move the shocks to the lowest holes to lift the chassi for larger tires (like 2.2 class event). Also, the Gen 8 has a simple method for adjustment of the wheel base at the center skid (for different bodies) without changing the link lengths. You can get a generic $12-13.00 USD lighting kit on Amazon or Ebay that will work on either truck. On my Gen 8 one downer item was that the servo (stock 15kg) felt a little under powered (Amazon has a great budget 20kg servo with metal horn for $18USD) . The stock servo worked ok on the Gen 7 but the Gen 8's different steering geometry seems to need a bit more grunt to get full lock to lock turning on a grippy rock (I also have 2 Gen 7s one stock with the original servo after over a 100 outings with metal horn). My friend has a TRX4 D90 and my modded Gen 7 (3s with 2.5oz of wheel weight per tire, 2 stage foams, metal transmission/gears/drive shafts,, & aluminum high steering kit) kept up fairly well with it, so I can't wait to get my new Gen 8 and his TRX4 on the rocks this weekend!
Just an update. I got the Gen 8 out for it's first run up an AZ desert mountain. At 2/3rds of a mile and 800 feet of elevation climb I broke a pin in the front driver side CV. It looks to be 2*12mm. The truck is stock except for the servo and 2.5oz of brass wheel weight (beef patties) on aluminum bead lock wheels (stolen from my Gen 7), and 3S lipo power. I ran the weights because the Gen 7 I have keeps breaking front axles (the rears never snapped) under the same setup, so I was curious as to what would break (if anything) on the Gen 8 with the the weights. Along the trail my friend and his TRX4 Defender (same steering servo, all brass hubs, knuckle gear housings, and diff cover, w/ 3S) and I tested the two trucks on several obstacles. They performed pretty close. The TRX4 tended to lift it's front wheels more going up hill and the suspension didn't articulate as well (known to be fixable with 10 weight shock oil). The large Gen 8 body did get hung up a few times (but boy does it look good doing it), but overall slid through several areas I thought for sure it was going to get snagged (the fender flares and sliders really worked well). The Gen 8 suspension really impressed me and is set up in almost a slight "droop" setting letting the wheels really drop down and kept solid contact with the ground (without the weights too, but better with them). So far I am very please but I'll have have to drive it some more. One final thing to note though was that my slipper clutch was a bit loose right out of the box (so check yours/ can be easily adjusted without dismantling the truck).
@@bobzilla9p0 I will check the clutch before I take it out for it's first big trail run. Many thanks for taking the time to post a very informative share with us all. Much appreciated, I think the info is good and others will find it of use. I did mention you in my 'Will 2.2 tires fit the Redcat Gen 8' video!
Raising the GEN8 as high as it'll go and putting on a set of 2.2 tires solves any clearance issues you'll have with the hump under the center skid plate. Shaving that hum off and raising the transfer case is easy to do but it does raise the CG closer to the TRX4 height. The gen8 is a better buy in my opinion.
I did my research and bought a gen 8, my buddy has a trx4, both trucks are great rigs, but I put 2.2 tires on mine and only had to adjust the suspension, my buddy has to spend about $ just to lift the trx4, also he never unlocks the diffs on his so that's alot of unneeded electronics and maintenance.
Très bon comparatif. Je préfère le Gen8. L'accessibilité aux différentiels pour les graisser est beaucoup plus facile. Même chose pour les portails. Bonne journée
The receiver box on the Gen8 is not waterproof. But sticking the receiver in a balloon fixes that. One difference you missed is the huge "bump" on the center belly pan on the Gen8 where the divorced transfer case is that tends to catch on rocks, compared to the TRX-4 smooth belly pan. Another performance differences is the Gen8 bumpers stick out further than the TRX-4, which can interfere when climbing up onto, or off of, rocks.
Okay on the receiver they are saying it's waterproof and seeing Shen RC's video he's taken it apart and the pcb is covered in conformal coating although I note the box itself may not be, sorry I wasn't 100% word specific (Note I am human!). Good tip on the balloon and I will do that when going submerged. Also noted on the bottom side of the car. I do try to cover as much as possible but if that's the only major bit I missed then I've not done badly. Only point I'd query is the bumpers. The gen 8 has a 61 deg approach angle and the TRX4 56.49 deg approach angle so the Gen 8 wins on the approach angle, the TRX4 has departure angle of 41.67 deg and the gen8 39.5 deg's. So it loses out on the departure angle but only just, but wins on the approach. So it seems the rear bumper sticks out a touch more but whilst you'd notice the approach angle not sure so much on the rear catching. Shen RC did a good live video last night where some guy (Ahem!) persuaded him to do the plank test, which is worth watching.
Driftomaniacs: Ahh, I didn't know about the coating on the receiver, that makes sense. I knew that the receiver box wasn't waterproof. If / when I get a Gen8 I'll probably slip a balloon on it just to be safe, though I'm not big on submarining my trucks. I haven't had hands on either truck so just going by videos I've seen comparing them. I've been saving my $$ for my next truck and right now the Gen8 is top of that list. I think it's pretty cool that Redcat has made a page on thingiverse where they've been posting accessories and some replacement parts for the Gen7 and Gen8 that you can download for free and 3D print, or have professionally printed at places like shapeways. I've heard rumors there's going to be a replacement belly pan that fixes that "bump" on the bottom.
The trx4 is nice and so is the 2speed tranny...but the gen8 frame assembly is really nicely designed. I got the gen8 in blue and think its an awesome truck. Imagine. what the gen9 will look like.
I can see both points of view, but I think that this is going to steal some TRX4 sales (non-sport). $160 saved buys you a lot of mods/upgrades. If you're a new guy to crawling and you're in a store and see these two side by side that price difference is going to make you think twice (we may not think like that but someone looking at a new sale will do). I can see your side of the TRX4 sport argument as well though. Of note I didn't get the sport as I already had the TRX4 (got one very early on) and liked the defender body. The sport didn't do alot for me at the time of its release, although on the trail I see it's very effective. Gen 8 looks and feels like it will be. I'd like a little more control on the throttle but I'll play around with over the next few days. I've a castle creations mamba x crawler edition and was going to put it back in the TRX4 but now thinking about dropping it in the Gen 8. What do you think? (Crawler edition one is all about torque not stupid fast brushless speed)
Have both the gen 8 and trx4 bronco. If i had to chose 1 truck to keep. It would be the trx4 bronco. Im glad to see redcat step up. I really didnt like the steering angle and servo placement on the gen8. So had to be modified to my taste. I did change out the wheels, foams ,servo and went to a 35 turn motor. Trx got a wheel change, servo and a bec.
Great video comparing the 2 crawlers honestly redcat looks like a better bang for your buck! 😂 Thanks for the great info! 👍👍👍 Although i have already seen broken gen8 portal gears some the RC groups on FB! 😔 So we will have to see how it holds up over time!
indeed I agree on the going slow. I've a brushless setup to go back in the TRX4 but it's the castle crawler edition which has huge torque and not speed. Hope that makes sense.
I was waiting for someone to say that but no I'd say not. If this was the other way around you'd have traxxas people saying oh look how traxxas have come up with a much improved version of that redcat model. Also note Traxxas weren't the first RC company to come out with portal axles. The redcat centrally mounted motor, and the Fwd mouting of it and the servo ain't copies of traxxas. At the end of the day one ladder chassis crawler with two solid axles is going to look pretty similar to another. Likewise the redcat has a few features the TRX4 doesn't.

Plus a company called Bow House came out with a flat skid for the gen8 already.
Why does it have to be a VS? Why can't they just be friends?🤣Can't we all just get along!?😂
My TRX4 has the wheel wells on the frame just like the gen8
Richie :idiot boy" LOL ur words not mine 🤣
Yeah the Defender/Tactical are the TRX4 with the wells on the body. Bronco/Kit/Sport have wells on the chassis.
@@STEVOD313 my trx4 has 4 wheels on the ground just like the gen8 :-)
It's like ford & chevy.. Def Not going to merge tomo lol
Anyone wondering a company called Bow House makes a flat skid for the gen8 to get rid of the hump.

very good words. Thanks for sharing
Great comparison very thorough gen 8 looks to be solid platform
Nice comparison Rich. I wouldn’t mind getting one of those gen 8s.

I'll keep an eye out for that belly pan replacement.
Both are easily modified. There is youtube videos on it
Like if you’re a trx4 owner
kai wouldn’t mind a gen 8. Redcat has stepped it up.
Great comparison. Finally someone compares it to the defender. The more realistic comparison 👍👍
Love your videos I feel like redcat is give a lot more bang for your buck
what an amazing video review my friend! What's your favorite between the two of them to crawl?
I definitely wouldn't mount a Lipo over top of a hot motor, I just personally think it's a fire waiting to happen.
good point!
The trx4 is nice and so is the 2speed tranny...but the gen8 frame assembly is really nicely designed. I got the gen8 in blue and think its an awesome truck. Imagine. what the gen9 will look like.
Wow this video is doing well out the gate! Hot topic I bet. Gen 8 more closely matches TRX4 sport but I'll watch for the size comparision.
Thanks. Size wise they are near identical. I can partly see the TRX4 sport comparison but undoubtedly this will steal TRX4 (Original non-sport) sales.

What battery are you using in the trx 4
typically 2s or 3s lipo 5000mah
Price is the biggest issue.
Especially since redcat kit pack roller is only $170.. Axial is $200.. Traxxas kits prob $300++

wow! I think I'd have been thinking of getting one of those axial scx10 raw builders kits if I was going to change all that! How does it handle now
Great video comparing the 2 crawlers honestly redcat looks like a better bang for your buck! 😂
Thanks for the great info! 👍👍👍
Although i have already seen broken gen8 portal gears some the RC groups on FB! 😔 So we will have to see how it holds up over time!
Great comparison👍
great video i think the redcat gen 8 is a game changer but love both of them
Should compare to trx4 sport
Gen7 vs gen8 please
Alas I've sold my Gen 7 but will see if I can do a comparison out on the trail with the guys
What is the final gear ratio on the gen 8? I know the trx4 is 64.64 :1
Nice comparison man, that was awesome. 👍😃👍
I love the Redcat
It's very useful video~~!!👍😁👍
Just different designs from different companies. I have not break anything with my TRX4. Going slow is not going to break the parts. lol
indeed I agree on the going slow. I've a brushless setup to go back in the TRX4 but it's the castle crawler edition which has huge torque and not speed. Hope that makes sense.
very nice good rc👍my friend video good good👍👍
