For Boon of Skill, I think playing as a rogue who cannot get less than a 17 on any skill check (barring negative ability scores) would actually be more appealing to me than added combat output. With a single epic feat, a 19th Lv Rogue can accomplish a skill money fantasy as a side-feature that people have dedicated entire builds to.

    • @GreenKnight41
      @GreenKnight41 23 дня назад +40

I will point out... because you can pick up the skilled feat multiple times... If you pick human, you can grab skilled twice (for a total of 6), gain one skill by default (7), get 2 from your background (9), 4 from being a rogue (13), pick the scout subclass for expertise in nature and survival (15), and for your first feat pick skilled again, you can gain proficiency in all skills by level 4 without multiclassing.
Personally, I would pick the Soul-Knife rogue instead (because psy-bolstered knack lets you add a psychic die to skills you're proficient with), multiclass into lore bard (which would be 4 skills, for a total of 17), and grab the skill expert feat at 4th instead, giving that final skill, plus 3 extra expertises, and the versatility of bard spellcasting for an overall better skill monkey.

But why? There should be other people in the group that specialize in certain skill sets. You do not need to have every skill or even the majority. In fact, you'll be stepping on the toes of other players who want to use their pc's skills and have their characters shine. You make it less fun for others by going that route.

I don't think it's bad if one player has skills to get through any skill related situation.
I mean, casters have spells that can do that almost by default.
I like playing Skill Monkey characters, but that doesn't mean I'm pushing anyone out of the way.
It just means that when the other Rogue that dumped charisma is trying to intimidate a guard that caught them stealing (because "Arcane Tricksters don't need much Dex"), I can hide and make plans for breaking them out of jail.

Dual wielding berserker barb seems like a good candidate for boon of irresistible offense. You will be making 4 attacks at advantage on your turn and likely make one off turn as a reaction. That’s 10 d20s (more likely 9 if you’re using brutal strikes) so the extra damage will happen pretty often.

You probably won't make all four attacks with advantage as for one of them you'll want Brutal Strike. I'd want the Combat Prowess to ensure that it hits, for its massive damage and two debuffs.

    • @feltrix334
      @feltrix334 23 дня назад +3

If you're crit fishing with this feat, you want a dual wielding champion fighter.
      - four base attacks (at level 20), plus one from nick and one from a bonus action.
      - free heroic inspiration at the start of your turn grants a reroll
      - vex means that any hit grants advantage on the next attack
      - studied attacks means that any miss grants advantage on the next attack
All this totals out to six attacks, 4-5 at advantage +1 reroll. It's worth noting that Vex only works on the same creature, so if you kill it, you miss out on advantage. Also worth noting that a level 20 barbarian gets some juicy stat increases that are going to boost the damage from Irresistible Offense, so I think there's a solid argument for barbarian, but I think Champion is generally going to be rolling a few more dice per round to crit with.

@@AruthaSilverthorn But it isn't fair to compare the capstone against just the epic boon feat. You have to compare the capstone vs 4 levels in another class PLUS an extra epic boon feat. Most if not all classes are not getting much more than a capstone feature and higher-level spells between 17-20. So, for Full caster, I'd hesitate to MC for a second epic boon. Martials (or Blade Pact Warlocks) on the other hand, could absolutely be worth it. Adding some spell casting plus other class features plus a second epic boon feat in exchange for your 4th attack? not an easy decision but definitely worth pondering. Think it works best for Blade Pact Warlocks though. You get your subclass capstone at 14, so you could very well take 4 levels into say Bard, Sorcerer, Fighter, or paladin and get armor/weapon/weapon mastery proficiencies, metamagic, a CHA scaling unarmored AC, smites, action surge, bardic inspiration, etc and another epic boon and it feels like you're giving up very little

For Boon of the Night Spirit the obvious party friendly spell is 4th level Shadow of Moil. It solves the bright light problem as it turns light and dim light into darkness and dim light around the caster in a relatively small area. Bonus points for adding that pesky radiant damage resistance that Boon of the Night Spirit doesn't. Concentration is a high price to pay, but taking the Hide action to give yourself the invisibility condition (since you'd be heavily obscured) could be a solid option.
Of course we all know having every resistance but psychic makes you quite tanky, but heavy obscurement also makes it so line of sight abilities and spells can't target you. A double edged sword considering your party members would have the same restriction, but since it could be worked around it's an underrated defensive option in my opinion.
Combining the 2d8 necrotic damage from being attacked within 10 feet also seems tailor made for Armor of Agathys synergy. All of that resistance would make the temporary hp from Armor off Agathys deplete slower.

Mathematically I don't know why I would ever take Boon of Fortitude over Boon of Recovery. If you have at least 80HP, your effective HP pool is going to be higher than what you'd get out of a 40HP increase, and any damage over your HP threshold gets mitigated. If I have 20HP left and take 50 damage, with Recovery that's 30HP of damage that just gets wiped away, with Fortitude I would have to eat that with my HP bar. Also for the HP recovery, with Boon of Recovery we're talking an average of 55HP regained. If I have a CON of +5 and take Boon of Fortitude, I need 11 different sources of HP recovery to be used on me to equal that pool, and the sources must be staggered between turns.

Replacing your Origin Feat for a second Epic Boon feat is fantastic.
Replacing your least valued regular feat for a third Epic Boon feat is great.
After that I would say the utility drops off, fast. Each feat you replace gets progressively more useful and core to your character. And each Epic Boon you replace it with is only the fourth or fifth most useful Epic Boon to you.
But yeah, be lucky with two Wishes without losing access to the spell, and you're golden.

Great video. Here are my thoughts
Boon of combat prowess: This one also synergizes with barbarian's brutal strike since you don't care about losing advantage.
Boon of energy resistance: Having two resistances which you can change on a long rest makes this pretty good on a tank to be honest. Even when you are not fighting a dragon or an elemental, most outsiders gravitate to using specific energies outside of weapon damage. Also, if you get two epic boons combine this with boon of night spirit to get resistance to everything.
Boon of irresistible offence: I just want to point out that if you can secure advantage on your attacks(which you can usually do by 19th level, this boon does give you +2 average per attack.
Boon of recovery: Ok, so one thing that boon of recovery has over relentless rage, if I am not mistaken, is that it doesn't have the "if you don't die outright" part meaning that it saves you from disintegrate beams(and at level 19 they may not be uncommon).
Boon of speed: perhaps the ultimate kiting feature. WARNING: Kiting is recommended for single player video games only. Kiting on while playing on the table may cause severe friendship damage. Please, kite responsibly.
Boon of spell recall: The only thing I can think of here is that based on the wording, if you don't expend a spell slot you can cast another spell, so maybe you can use this with a sorcerer... maybe wild magic if you want to gamble...

TLDL: Many of Epic Boon feats are best used in pairs
Epic Boons are often even more useful then you think as like some are just made for certain types of characters like Recall means little to a full caster (much less a wizard) but a Paladin or Ranger getting 25% more spells is big! However some of them combo relatively well. I will give you my five favorites from worst to best.
    5) Rogue Gambit (Combat Prowess and Irresistible Offense)
When you roll to attack you are looking for either damage or a lot of damage. This is a lot more for the rogues - because you get one attack and not only do you want it to hit but you also want full damage and if you do crit you want a LOT more damage. Your gambit always will pay off.
    4) Eye of Odin/Thoth (Truesight and Skill Expertise-Insight)
This means you have gained knowledge and are not fooled. Even if you are a fighter suddenly you can see through an illusion or a disguise kit. A smooth talker can’t persuade you with lies on subjects you don’t know because you know them all.
3)Iga’s Shade (Night Spirit and Energy Resistance)
Your darkness from has only two weaknesses - Psychic and Radiant… convent how you can have Energy Resistance to both. You are not just at home in the darkness gain strength from it and only others born to it can face you there.
    2) Kratos’s Child (Fortitude and Recovery w/Bonus Points for Toughness)
Recovery triggers Fortitude and so you always can outlast enemies unless they do a massive mount of damage in combat. In battle, your body is a mountain of resilience.
    1) Swift Striker (Speed and Dimensional Travel)
This you are almost unstoppable and no one can catch you- literally. You can roll up to a baddy, hit them however you like. Warrior or caster, hitting them many many times with weapons or even with a touch spell, and then leave and there is nothing they can do to stop you. They can’t counter you, they can only hope that when you strike they are not your prey.
Well anyone else have more combos they like? I know there are more.

Just realized that both Fiend and GOO warlocks can have resistance to all damage when they have Shadow of Moil up by 19th level. Take the 'Boon of the Night Spirit' Boon that grants resistance to all damage except Psychic and Radiant when in Dim Light. Both Fiend and Goo locks can get Psychic resistance from their class features, and if you cast 'Shadow of Moil' on yourself, you will be granted Resistance to Radiant damage, AND, you turn Bright light within 10 feet of you to Dim light, therefore giving you resistance to all damage types while concentrating on SoM, and also making all attacks at advantage, having all incoming attacks at disadvantage, and being immune to many spell effects as you won't be able to be targeted by any spell that requires sight of you.

While I think resistance to non-magical bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage has been basically 100% removed from the game, I also think it's likely that in exchange they'll have more enemies that resist just one or two of bludgeoning, piercing, or slashing. Or at high levels, enemies that resist all three. There were already a few of those in 5.0, and WOTC has been swapping over stuff that used to deal magical BPS to force or radiant or other types of rarely resisted energy damage, so there's definitely some mechanical room to do this.

21 (standard), 25 (Barb or Belt of STR), maybe 27 (Barb getting a manuel for a +2 STR at some point) are going to be numbers you see being played around with this boon, and even then, that's still very good bumps to a Nat 20's existing damage.

For Boon of Combat Prowess, I was thinking that Barbarians with their new Relentless Strike feature, that has to give up Advantage for 2d10 extra damage, and imposing two conditions on the target at this level, might want this boon the most, with Rogues being a close second, as they would not need to focus as much on getting Advantage, and/or could get more out of any reaction attacks that can apply Sneak Attack damage.
For Monks, this boon seems useful if you want to make sure you can perform Stunning Strike, a grapple (via the Grappler feat), and/or the "Open Hand" subclass's capstone feature with your first attack for the turn.
With Fighters now getting Advantage on the next attack against a target when they miss an attack against that target, I was thinking that 2024 Fighters might not need this boon as much as most other matial/half-caster classes (the results are close to the same if you turn a miss into a hit with this boon, then miss the next attack, or if you accept the miss, then hit while rolling the next attack at Advantage), but this could be a matter of preference, and/or the exact build. This boon would probably be nice on a Vex based build, to make sure you hit and/or have Advantage with the vast majority of your attacks.

Hi Chris. You're my favourite DnD youtuber and optimiser. I think you missed the key benefit of boon of recall. You can now prepare shield, absorb elements, and silvery barbs on any spell caster, and never expend a spell slot. This gives am excellent level of defensive power that is unavailable to most characters.
The ability to sometimes get a free 2nd 3rd or 4th level spell is then a minor boon ontop of your now incredible reactions.
It can also be used on cure wounds or healing word to allow infinite healing and raising 1 ally per round, and this can be accessed by taking a 1 level dip into cleric.
I would be very interested in the ability to heal thr entire party to full health between every combat, and then have incredible defenses ontop of it.

How are able to never expend a spell slot? The free casting part says you have to roll the same number, not the same or higher, unless I'm missing something

I think you're interpreting the feat differently than written. The d4 has to equal the spell level, not be equal or greater than the spell level (in which case, it would rock!)

@TreantmonksTemple ahhhh, I get it now. That's a shame. In which case yes it's not that great a feat.

Tough Dwarf Moon Druid with Boon of Recovery sounds like a good time

  • @FakeDadRealFriend

I think Boon of Recovery will be particularly good for Warlocks using 2014 external sources of Invocations (XGE particularly). With the ability to take Pact of the Chain and Pact of the Blade concurrently now, Blade Warlocks could take Gift of the Everliving Ones and treat the 10d10 as ten +10 HP flat gains, pocket +100 HP on a bonus action is a sudden rebirth in combat, totally flipping a dire situation, especially when its helping the Warlock improve survivability to use melee combat with the new Devouring Blade build opportunities they have going.
And I think Boon of Spell Recall is worth reconsideration as a REALLY good resource for half-casters. A flat 25% chance to not expend a spell slot on basically all the leveled spell castings you do each day as a half-caster should be quite good. If you asked me if I would take an Epic Boon that would increase my total pool of spell slots by 25% every single day for a half-caster I would be very happy about taking it.

Yeah, looking this over, it's clear that Force is meant to be D&D's equivalent to the Almighty element in SMT/Persona.
Irresistable Offense is often paired with a Monk because of its many attacks, meaning one of them is going to turn up as a crit eventually; since Monks prefer DEX instead of STR, that's going to be 25+ damage per crit the enemy is going to be choking down.
Also, if you're aware of the environment as a Warrior of Shadow, the Boon of the Night Spirit is practically a given seeing as you're trying to avoid light whenever possible anyway.

The boon of Spell recall would be amazing on a paladin, Since Divine smite is now a spell. A 25% chance of not using a spell slot for Divine Smite with the limited number of spell slots a Paladin gets. It's a chance at a free 2-5d8 radiant damage.

I would change boon of recall to if the spell level is equal or lower than the number you roll on a d4 it does not expend a spell slot.
Doing this you'll never expend first level spell slots. But I think it's fine for a lvl 19 character to be able to do this.
Also possible: you can apply the same rule (spell level equal or lower than die result) to a 1d6-1 die roll and go up to level 5 spells. There is a chance that a first lvl spell will cost a slot but it is also possible that you can cast a 5th level spell for free

Little sidenote based on the bit at the start. If you have the right level 20 build, you can get 2 of these by taking lvl 4 in one class at 19 and lvl 4 in a 2nd class at 20. Can't think of any that are good, but there might be some.

The funny thing about Boon of Skill is that's it's even bad for players who are trying to build "Oops All Skills" because you don't have the opportunity to get expertise in any of them after the fact.
A 2024 Level 1 Human Rogue double dipping on the Skilled feat can already have proficiency in most of the skills with expertise in 2 of them, looking forward something like Skill Expert at level 4, two more expertises at level 6, and Reliable Talent at Level 7.

I've been enjoying all your coverage lately Chris. I feel your personality has softened and it makes me like the videos more. My opinion on Epic Boons is they are a great option. No one says you have to run a full level 1-20 campaign to enjoy them. Start a level 19 campaign and play the fantasy equivalent to super heroes. It might be cool to do a level 20-30 campaign and max out your ability score.

Ok, Spell recall may only be a 25% chance. But I don't think full casters are the people that will get the most out of this. Half casters on the other hand are going to love this. Since they only have max of 5th level spells, they can get back anything but that one highest spell. Like imagine this on a Paladin, every time they smite or your Eldritch Knight uses Shield they might get the slot back.

With energy resistance you are only considering the effects use against monsters. Which I understand is a lot of enemies, but caster enemies or humanoids are typically not immune or resistant to the element they are attacking with.

So i agree with Chris that the fate/teleport could be a great choice for the first 2 boons on any character, but another combination that i would be exited to have would be True sight+night spirit, then as a 3rd take the weaker energy resistance feat just to have resistance to all damage (as long as you can have dim light or darkness) and the utility of permanent true sight.

Boon of Fortitude is the new Lifeberry.
Adding your Con mod to each berry is a ridiculous amount of healing.
Not sure how many max level games will need out of combat healing, but still.

Truesight lets you see people trying to hide from you, since hiding just gives the invisible condition. In the old rules I think it only worked against magical effects, but now it seems to spoil mundane hiding as well.
