Happier ending I just imagined: the rug at the end was another polar bear and the cub is just mistaking it for its mother. The mother is making her way to the house to follow her baby. When the mother finds her baby in the house they go back home and live happily ever after.

I love Polar Bears so so so so so so much, and this killed me to watch. And the worst part is, that this is reality.
Bear in mind, (da bum tsssh) that polar bears actively view you as lunch. They're the only animals that actually go out of their way to hunt humans, besides humans themselves.

Who lives in the artic and shoots polar bears? They either haul them to a zoo or just ignore them because they have better stuff to do. If somebody was actually able to survive the artic in a little cabin, I give them the right to do what it takes to survive.
Given the hunting restrictions and the actual nature of polar bears, anyone shooting a polar bear is 95% of the time going to be in self defense
Hyper carnivorous and so desperate for sustenance in the arctic wasteland that they will shrug off multiple gunshot wounds in an attempt to kill and eat whoever is shooting at them
Shooting a cub? Yeah cubs are bad news because there’s a high chance mom Isn’t far behind (how the hell is he supposed to know rug and cub are related) tho I don’t think outright killing it is a good idea.
