The book "Awakenings" written by Dr. Oliver Sacks is the basis for this movie. It's not written like a novel as most movie books are, but rather, it's broken into chapters on each of the characters represented in this movie. It tells their individual stories and goes into detail about the attempts to help them. It is Extraordinary and well worth reading! You'll see pictures of the real people these actors portrayed and it will definitely impact your heart even more deeply than this exceptional movie does.
The real person behind this was Oliver Sachs. An amazing writer. I highly recommend this books "The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat" and his memoirs, where I learned he also was a body builder, biker, and gay. I am blanking on the name of the memoirs though. I got to hear him lecture once. He was fascinating.
"I'm Grotesque. This isn't me." ... as someone suffering from serious untreatable debilitating depression for going on 8 years now... and being nothing like the guy I used to be before it started... this scene hits me hard. I know exactly how he feels.
Here's a cool little story: My brother's best friend is a woman named Joanne. She has Tourette's and happened to be friends with Oliver Sacks, the author of the novel. Joanne was an advisor for the movie. Not only did she help but she became good friends with Robin Williams! She has another good celeb story: when she was 14 in the mid 70s, she went to a horse riding camp in CT. One day she and her friend were riding, and Joanne fell off the horse, near the fence. Her friend's dad put his hand through to help her up. She stood up and looked. It was Paul Newman! This was soon after the release of "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid," so Paul was HUGE and in his prime. And oh, by the way, Robert Redford was standing behind him!! Later that day, Joanne and Paul's daughter got into the back seat of Paul's VW Beatle, then Paul and Robert Redford got in the front seats, and they went and had dinner. They were all treated like royalty.
You're absolutely right that it's all in our perspective; I *get* to rather than I *have* to. A couple years ago I started to say to myself that this (whatever this might be) is happening *for* me not *to* me. It's amazing how much of a difference just that one little change made in my life.
During a scene where Dr Sayer is trying to steady Leonard, DeNiro was struggling harder than Robin Williams expected. Williams slipped and ended up punching DeNiro in the face, breaking his nose. No matter how much he said he was fine, everyone was freaking out. Robin said that he just knew that DeNiro was going to punch him back. Lol
What's sad is that most people are not satisfied with doing "the simple things" but instead are always looking for the next crazy thing to push the limit n "feel alive" when if they'd see thing from different perspectives they'd realize just being able to eat by yourself, walk to a park or things like that are incredible to people that can't do them. We need to appreciate the simple things in life
Such a good movie. I read the book as well...very clinical. Also heard the actual doctor from this, Oliver Sachs, give a talk. Also read his memoirs. Contrary to what is hinted in this movie, he was gay...and a biker and body builder. The damage caused was to a tiny part of the brain, the substantia nigra, that produces dopamine. One chemical...lacking it causes this. There also have been cases of the same syndrome caused by poisoning by bad batches of synthetic illegal drugs.
I truly love this movie but it also makes me incredibly sad. It reminds me why I got into the scientific field and the end goal of investigation, but it also shows you that most times it just doesn't work. Great reaction as always😊
This movie is so well made and all the actors and actresses do an amazing job. It really reminds me of the book “Flowers for Algernon”. If you get a chance to read it, please do so.
Wow a great movie. What a pleasant surprise not many reactors reacted to this great movie . Another great real life story movie is Lorenzo's Oil which is just as emotional and amazing as this one. Also another great Robin Williams real life story movie is Patch Adams
@@ItsAPrimateeHey It's a primate, have you ever studied Islam or come across it's teachings in some way? Because I've noticed you have the Outlook and perspective of a Muslim, without realizing it. Your approach towards being grateful for everything I life. Not taking all your blessings you do have for granted. Showing gratitude=increase in blessings and showing ingratitude=decrease in blessings from the creator. That's the Islamic tradition and that's what the Qu'ran teaches. You seem to be wise beyond your years. Islam is nothing but wisdom and knowledge of what human beings should be obtaining and striving towards. In Islam Allah/God created us with the intellect logic and reason, as well as giving us the revelation. They hand in hand. Also seeking his wisdom and knowledge throughout life. I think Islam would suit you like a glove.
"Whoa! Why is the Ouija board even here!?" .... because it's a mass-produced plastic novelty board game produced by Parker Brothers... not a portal to the afterlife...
I think it's important to watch these kinds of true stories otherwise, these people and the trials they went through would be forgotten. I would recommend Men of Honor, Robert De Niro and Cuba Gooding Jr, as it's such a great story and film of overcoming limits set on you by society.
Although it was very loosely based on a true story. Leonard Robert de niro character. Was cured. He masturbated all the time. Then went back into the cationic state again. Imagine Robert portraying that character

The name of the real doctor in this movie is Dr. Oliver Sack. He passed away in 2015 at the age of 82
33:30 Bro, 1990 was _33_ years ago.

We watched this in my psychology class in high school when I was 17. So good!

Man I haven't seen this movie in years. Another good Robin Williams mental illness movie is The Fisher King.
Great intro dude!
Must say I really loved the practical effects for
Awakenings 😂
I think you forgot that there are other types of movies than sci-fi action spectacles.
Or is this the first one you’ve ever seen?
Dude you are very level headed. I love the comments you make! I think you have experienced lot of life to be the way you are.
I truly love this movie but it also makes me incredibly sad. It reminds me why I got into the scientific field and the end goal of investigation, but it also shows you that most times it just doesn't work.
Great reaction as always😊
Fun fact.. Julie Kavner, the nurse working with Robin, is the voice of Marge.
Marge Simpson, I assume
@@pangkaji of course, who else. 🤭
I’ve seen her in tv reruns from the 1970 show Rhoda. Julie was in an episode of Taxi, in which she and eccentric Chris Lloyd went on a date.
Your reaction to the ouija board was hilarious! 🤣
Based on a true story.
Nominated for 3 Oscars including Best Picture
Yeah, a terrific film, based on Oliver Sacks' work. His books are very interesting, including my favorite "The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat."
This movie is so well made and all the actors and actresses do an amazing job. It really reminds me of the book “Flowers for Algernon”. If you get a chance to read it, please do so.
Williams loved the true story movies, his other doctor one 'Patch Adams' should definitely be watched
Wow a great movie. What a pleasant surprise not many reactors reacted to this great movie . Another great real life story movie is Lorenzo's Oil which is just as emotional and amazing as this one. Also another great Robin Williams real life story movie is Patch Adams
Funny, I also thought about Lorenzo’s Oil watching this. Two movies that choke me up…
I keep asking reactors who've watched "The Sandman" to check this out, because that incorporates the "sleepy sickness" phenomenon into its story too.
I can see why Julie Kavner was chosen for Marge Simpson. She really does have a soothing presence on screen, in big part from her voice.
I remember her from late night episodes of Rhoda 😅, such a lovely funny sister 🥰.
great movie. under appreciated as a movie to react to.
My favorite Robin Williams movie ❤ I think you'll enjoy this immensely. Love your reactions, wish you all the best 😊
Bob Dinero is amazing in this role!! Incredible this is based on true events 😢
Thanks!

I love this movie. It's so fucking sad, man.
I wonder if they've done more research and they've had similar reactions
Yesssssss I love that movie so much
"Whoa! Why is the Ouija board even here!?" .... because it's a mass-produced plastic novelty board game produced by Parker Brothers... not a portal to the afterlife...
💯 Thank you!!
12:50 The ouija is a Hasbro board game lol
You also definitely need to watch
The Hitchhiker’s Guide to The Galaxy, Galaxy Quest, Max Keeble’s Big Move, Disney’s The Kid
Galaxy Quest is an absolute must see.
Man i am shocked to see someone react to this. Good request Gordo👍
🎉

Ay we almost got 100k. Congrats my fellow part-german
✊
This is based on truth. Its also used in The Sandman the sleeping sickness. It happened between 1917 and 1926
Although it was very loosely based on a true story. Leonard Robert de niro character. Was cured. He masturbated all the time. Then went back into the cationic state again. Imagine Robert portraying that character
Someone else notice the young Vin Diesel?
One of the saddest fu**ing movies I've ever seen.
Nurse Eleanor is Marge Simpson.
Primate you should react to another Pixar franchise which is cars franchise
Noti
Gang
No disrespect what are you watching this a movie I Am you say Sawyer but his name is Sayer
