Hello and welcome to another Movie reaction video!
What can I say, this one did completely mess me up as you can see.
Thanks to the Patrons who voted this one as the winner, it was upsetting but I needed to see it.
Much love
Ryan
"Because you are a kind man. And Because he's your friend." 😭😭
A cried like a baby watching this. Anyone who could watch this and not cry has no heart.
Ryan, repeat after me: " I will never again apologize for crying. It makes my reactions authentic and relatable."
Don't apologize. Real art and storytelling is meant to be felt. You're an artist, you get that. This film has been a favorite of mine since its inception. The performances are stellar, some of the best in Hollywood history and yet it is a film barely recognized. I'm new here, and I'm not sure you do reactions anymore, but I'd like to share some personal gems that I think you might enjoy. You may know some of these already, but here goes... "The Color Purple", "Dead Poet's Society", "Out of Africa", "Gorilla's in the Mist", and "Chariot's of Fire". All based on true life stories and filmed to perfection IMO.
I greatly enjoyed sharing this reaction with you and hope you will do more. Good luck with your career and God Bless.
Thank you so much for reacting to this overlooked masterpiece. It’s such a beautiful, yet heart-breaking film. One that stays with you a long, long time. The thought of people rediscovering forgotten movies like this is why I love seeing reactors who don’t just watch current, popular films and shows. And your reaction was perfect! Much better than reactors who talk through the whole movie.
EXACTLY! I hate reaction channels that are all about click bait. They react to the SAME damn movies (Star Wars, LOTR, the MCU movies, etc.).
Same here.
Great video.
Great, great movie and so underrated and overlooked, such a shame.
Yeah I hate it when reaction channels react to stuff. In fact, they should just upload the entire movie with no reaction whatsoever.
I cry every time I see this one. Brilliant acting by Robert DeNiro and Robin Williams!
To be completely honest, I don't think I would enjoy and/or trust somebody running a film reaction channel who DIDN'T react the way you did for this film. One can be analytical, but that doesn't mean that humanity must be stripped out of us while we thoughtfully contemplate the technical and artistic merits of films. I love thoughtful, intelligent films... but I'll cry when deeply moved. This film affected me the same. The shame would be a cold review detached of emotion... when the POINT of this and other films are to connect EMOTIONALLY, as well as intellectually, with an audience. Mission accomplished.
Carry on... eagerly anticipating other reactions. Cheers!
Very true John, thank you for the comment!
Robin said that the real Dr. Thayer was always on the set, and that he drew his portrayal from him. Robin said he was around six foot six, and had a big white beard like Santa, and was just a gentle giant. This was actually shot on the third floor of a real Mental Hospital, and some of the extra's were real patient's. DeNiro in this role is among his very best.
Very real. Not for a second did he look like he was acting.
This was the first time I saw a tender side to Robert De Niro. If it doesn't tear your heart out...
Wow, I haven’t seen this film in years. Had almost forgotten about it completely.
27:50 You were not alone right there... It rips my heart out, and I can't see anything through the tears and sobs. Brilliant, heartbreaking, bittersweet movie. One of my all time favorites. And it is such an underrated piece of art. You'll not hear people talking about it. I'm so glad you reacted to it, though ♥️
There are times to talk and times to be quiet. I very much appreciate your silence. I find shared silence a lovely thing.
Absolutely.
I have ALWAYS loved this film ;) Not sure why but Robin Williams affected me in his dramatic performances even more so than his comedic ones. He was such a deeply empathetic human being and it really showed in these roles. Robert De Niro hits you right in the gut with this role and Penny Marshall is criminally underrated as a director. It's lovely to see the film affected you in the same way - brutal yet beautiful.
It is beautiful yeah, Williams definitely could portray that empathy, especially in the scenes where they were measuring out the drug and De Niro was just amazing. I don't know why this film isn't more popular because it was beautifully witten and directed
This is based on the book Awakenings by Oliver Sacks. His book Hallucinations is incredible.
Great reaction. I was crying like a girl on this movie. Best movie of all time, in my op. Thanks you, man)
Another overlooked Robin Williams masterpiece (in my opinion), The Fisher King, just a great film.
The real doctor was Oliver Sacks. Read anything he's written - he was a great writer who brought his patients and their ailments to life. He was born in Britain and educated at Oxford, but moved to the US to practice. He just recently died.
beautiful reaction to a beautiful but heartbreaking film
Wow. Reliving this movie reminded me of how amazing De Niro can act. Reaction videos like this remind me of movies long forgotten. Also, IMO, its okay not to comment for stretches. 50% of the time, I'm more interested in the movies that I'm reliving, and the reaction is the bonus.
yeah, I loved De Niro as a kid, mainly for Taxi Driver, Jackie Brown, Goodfellas and Casino tbh but this was him at his best I feel. Thanks for the comment mate
Awakenings is such a fine example of the kinds of dramas made in the 80s and early 90s: earnest, precise, directors understanding how and when to stay out of the way of a good script in the hands of well-cast actors. DeNiro would have (deservedly) won an Oscar for this, I believe, had Daniel Day-Lewis not won Best Actor the year before for a performance (in My Left Foot) that required the same kind of physicality. (Day-Lewis’s performance is my favorite of all-time.) Awakenings, yes. One of those films that would leave only the most cynical person unmoved.
Yeah it feels like quintessential 90's drama film. I still havent seen My left foot but I will get to that at some point, I just need to give my heart strings a break
Just so you know, Robin always acknowledged his hairy arms when brought up in interviews. He proudly sported them as being from "The Darwin Collection". LOL!
Julie Kavner, who played Eleanor, is mostly recognized as the voice of Marge Simpson.
I love this movie. It's really hard for me to watch the scenes with his mother because I recently lost my mom 3 years ago. The scene that absolutely slays me and reduces me to tears is when Leonard tries to go to bed after his first day of awakening and he's too scared to go back to sleep because he thinks he may go back to being catatonic. His mother strokes his hair and has to sing him to sleep the way she probably did when he was little. UGH! ARE YOU KIDDING ME? So powerful.
Ah I didn't know he acknowledged the arms lol!
Yeah my friend told me it was Marge after viewing and I felt dumb for not hearing it.
That scene is heart breaking definitely. I can't even think back to certain parts of this film without feeling a gut punch
Robin’s friend comedian Billy Crystal called him “opera gloves”.
Robin told stories about his hairy arms in several interviews over the years. 😁 The one I remember most is that when he met Coco the gorilla, she made a pass at him and tried to take him into the back room. The trainer basically told him, “If she takes you back there, I can’t help you.”
This was a fantastic reaction to a virtually unknown masterpiece of a film. There were parts where you barely spoke, but silence can speak volumes too.
I've subbed and definitely am looking forward to reacting more. Thanks!
This is a great reaction. It's honest, that's a great thing. It's kind of a scary film to watch and imagine it in real life.
As someone who knows a little bit about these things in a different way: when the brain doesn't do what you want it to do, it's maybe worse than pain or a physical disability.
When you are missing an arm you have ways to adapt, when it's the brain... not much options remain.
I cry with this movie too, knowing that it was true makes it quite heavy. It's an incredible movie. Great video man.
It really is, thank you mate
Really enjoyed your reaction.
I knew at the start, what you said about crying... I was like uh oh, he's in for it with this one. The Fisher King tore me up even worse than this one did. If you've never seen it, do. It's Robin and Jeff Bridges.
I love that movie
Not only does Williams have the hairiest arms in this one, he also has the hariest chest in The Fisher King.
@@scottjo63 Robin used to say in interviews about his hairy arms that they were from "The Darwin Collection". LOL!
@@scottjo63 you see it in Jumanji too. Abundantly. 😄
No apologies. It just proves your a human being capable connecting with others! Beautiful reaction.
One of Robin Williams best movies ever is Patch Adams! Adored him and miss his face 🥺
It's so interesting to me that so many people love this movie. It's on my list for worst movies I've ever seen. 🤣
A bio pic on the very same Dr. who wrote this as well.
A truly brilliant movie. It still brings me to tears. Im glad you got to experience this and thst it touch you in the way it did. Compassion is a wonderful emotion. Peace ✌️
Once again. Lorenzo's Oil. It's a spiritual and human rollercoaster.
You were speechless through most of this movie. That's the perfect reaction.
Such a great movie. It's tender, tragic and bitter sweet and so well acted. It's nice to see a young guy like yourself react the way u did, shows u have heart and can appreciated this story. Not many movies are made like this anymore. RIP Robin Williams
If someone doesn't shed tears in this movie, they are dead inside. Awesome movie and the performances are spectacular!
If you've never seen the movie "Warrior" with Tom Hardy, I highly recommend it. I'd say go into it without knowing much. One of my favorites!
very true, oh yeah I forgot about that one! been meaning to see it for a while now
@@WatchMeMovie Ya you will totally like it. I've also really enjoyed NightCrawler with Jake Gyllenhaal . Have an awesome weekend my friend. Now I go and watch something too. Not sure what but something LOL
Saw this in the movies and broke me too. Will never watch it again and never recommend it to others. It is also one of the most amazing movies I've ever seen. Thank you for doing this. Glad you did it and sorry at the same time
This movie broke me when I saw it years ago.
I will take serious Robin Williams over funny Robin any day of the week.
If you haven’t seen it yet, please do What Dreams May Come.
That movie kills me. Ugly cry city. Lol
I am giving my Patrons a poll soon on films to try and make me cry, so will remember to add this one
@@WatchMeMovie Add Big Fish too then. LOL
A master class in acting by Robert De niro
Written by one of my screenwriting idols Steve Zaillian. I learned so much about the craft from this man. Steve went on to win an Oscar for writing Schindler's List after this. Also wrote Searching For Bobby Fischer, Gangs of New York, Moneyball, American Gangster, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, The Irishman, and The Night Of (tv series). All of which I seriously recommend if you haven't seen. x
Ah this makes a lot of sense, I could tell the screenplay was crafted by someone who really knew their craft. Thanks for the info!
Only just watch this movie can't believe how good it is what a master piece, tears thought out the movie definitely worth the watch
Hey Ryan! Howdy from north Texas once again!!! Very thoughtful and insightful reaction! This movie always makes me emotional as well... the performances by Williams and Deniro were top shelf in addition to the other actors in my opinion! What an absolutely moving tale about humanity... keep up the great work and I’ll be waiting for the next reaction!
So ready for this. Mostly because it sounds like maybe you've never seen Williams in a serious role. People always talk about Robin the comedian... I truly prefer his dramatic roles. He can make me bawl with one expression. Don't think anyone else can. Well, maybe Olivier. Fr.
He did watch goodwill hunting earlier this year too :)
Like Patch Adams you mean??
@@philjones45 exactly. That one hurt my heart so bad I never watched it again. And it wasn't about lines. It was his face. The pain portrayed in it. The Fisher King is another one. I dearly love it. But have to be in the right frame of mind to watch it. He's so good.
@@Eowyn187 if you say so.
Yeah I think I completely prefer Robin in serious roles. He has so much natural talent in that way
I approach watching movies the same way you seem to. I start off analyzing the technical aspects. I know that the movie is on another level if I find myself unable to analyze because of how immersive the work becomes. This is one of those movies. Also, Williams and Deniro are two of the greatest actors of all time and this is the best work of their careers, IMO. And Marshall puts it together in a way that is simultaneously heartbreaking and inspiring. I was completely floored.
I honestly think I agree that this is their best work. And yes I always usually watch films like that and I think the only other movie on the channel that stopped me dead in my tracks was Schindlers list. Analysis out the window a lot sooner than other reactors from what I've seen lol
Hi Ryan. I enjoyed watching this movie with you. I cried too at Deniros performance. But the thing that kept going through my mind while watching this, was that it was all real. I remember Robin Williams talking about the making of this movie and all the real patients that he and Deniro met. He said that was a very profound moment in his life and one that he will always cherish.
Thank you Ryan for being so open with your emotions.
What are we watching next and when shall I make the popcorn.?
Thank you Trudy! This was a very special film. Hmm I think next video coming to the channel should be Gladiator!
@@WatchMeMovie I'll be there.
I've seen most of De Niro movies from Taxi Driver, Good Fellas, The Untouchables, Raging Bull, Once upon a time in America, Brazil, etc ...all excellent acting (especially in Raging Bull), but as far as In my opinion, his acting in "Awakenings" was his best ever. I don't know why the hell this movie is so underrated.
Thanks for this one.
This is simply excellence in filmmaking. Excellence in storytelling. Not an easy film, but we are all wealthier for giving audience to productions like this.
And nothing amiss in your reaction.
Thank you as usual Blue!
Sadder still when reminded that this is based on actual events. Acting is stunningly real.
Thank you for watching this movie. I'm sure most people have watched a film and connected far beyond the entertainment aspect. I have one that hits too hard and can't watch it again. I would never suggest any movie just to see an emotional reaction.
Im late to this party, but ive studied this as an Undergrad and during my graduate Medical education. Artificially elevating DOPA does enhance brain signals but you will eventually get the extra pyramidal side effects of your own body rejecting the stimulation. One will need more and more to "maintain control" but will also have ticks and swings of emotions that mirrors a drug addict. In the end, the body will shut down all production of DOPA receptors and this "external drug" will no longer work. Still makes me emotional seeing this movie again, in college i proposed an artificial R-Dopa activator that must be introduced as a viral transcript (its a purely artificial DOPA drug but it can be weaned off in time)... but in the mid 2010's that was a no... and now w/ COVID all viral transcript introduction research has all but stopped (which i specialized in)... beside the point... this pointed me into the medical field when i saw this as a junior high kid.
I'm glad to know know I'm not the only one who watched Awakenings and sobbed my heart out. De Niro is excellent here, the scenes in which he starts developing ticks and eventually gets worse are so hard to watch.
The movie "The Angriest Man in Brooklyn" starring Robin is at once a tremendous comedy, with classic scene's, and a great tragedy at the same time. It's also prophetic. You deserve to watch it. The ending is priceless! I enjoy watching you react to these timeless movie's!
Thank you Christopher, I haven't heard of that one I will have a look into it, cheers!
Great movie but very sad especially since it's based on a true story! Thanks for checking it out!
Wow I haven’t seen this since I was a teenager. Loved it then and want to watch it again now. Thanks!
I really enjoy your analysis can't wait to watch more
Thank you Michelle!
This guy is full of energy!
I think the main difference between this film and others is, that it showed us life, real life. The greatest real challenges of life, we avoid to think about, from a perspective we'll usually never see - from the perspective of those who are being called "vegetables" - but are as special persons with their own dreams and things they like or not. I've never seen another film with such a deep message. I think it would have been worth a lot of oscars. But Oscars are for fiction, not for real life.
If a film like this doesn't break your heart nothing will!
Love this movie! Great reaction!
¡Saludos, desde Argentina!
Oh my gosh, I haven't seen this in so long, you had me bawling my eyes out. Can you believe De Niro did this the same year he did "Goodfellas"?!!! Always great seeing Julie Kavner doing acting before Marge Simpson made her so rich you never see her anymore! :P No shame in choking up on this one. As I was watching this video, it occurred to me that Penny Marshall, Robin Williams and Robert De Niro had all been close friends of John Belushi; Williams and De Niro both saw Belushi the night he died. John Heard had been a friend of Belushi as well. All of those people sobered up after his death, and almost ten years later they made this movie. Not that there's a direct connection, but other than De Niro you couldn't imagine any of them doing this movie ten years earlier. PS: Love "Sing Sing Sing", great taste, man!
If you like Robin Williams, I highly recommend The World According to Garp
The music is beautiful too! I have it saved!
😢 thanks for reacting to this.
Thank you for watching me react to this
Love the film. It is a tear jerker.
Randy Newman did the soundtrack. His brother Thomas is one of my favorites. He did the soundtrack to Meet Joe Black, and many others.
I'm all into soundtracks :))
Thomas Newman is my favorite film composer by a country mile, particularly his scores of Little Women and Oscar and Lucinda.
@@OldBluesChapterandVerse he's awesome. I've put together a huge playlist of my faves from him.
Love your videos. Your voice is super soothing lol also this is a great film. Robin Williams is amazing in this.
A brilliant, honest and genuine reaction. Loved this movie.
Thank you very much , I did too
Watched it again after seeing you were doing it. Also hits me on a personal note. Had exactly the reaction I thought you would, heh.
lol I stood no chance with this one. De Niro portrayed it too well
Do you recognize (Eleanore) Marge Simpson's voice?? I've seen this movie many times and cry every time. Talented casting. My favorite Robert Deniro performance.
Great movie.
Most important movie I have seen
Great not many reactors react to this great movie. I still have hope someone would react to The World According To Garp . Also another great drama is Lorenzo Oil.
Thank you for the suggestions, I will put them in a poll at some point
Love this movie 😭❤️ Nice Reaction 🙂👍
As always, enjoyed watching you reacting to movies. I would be curious to what you would think of Brian DePalmas “Body Double”
A very good film, movies such as this just do not date, unfortunately for me if the subject matter is right my eyes will stream... You don't have to give a critical reaction you have already said it all... 'One Hour Photo' is another top Robbin Williams film but there are several 'The Fisher King' is also exceptional....
Yeah this subject in particular was definitely one where I couldn't have held it in. You're right this hasn't aged at all and won't. I have actually seen that, yeaaars ago and remember loving one hour photo. I will have to rewatch in my own time. The Fisher King keeps coming up so will look into it cheers!
Hello mate, I would love for you to do a reaction to South Korean movies, as they have a different feel than Hollywood and European movies. Often they even are very emotional. It would have been great to hear your views and experience as you are a movie student who knows more stuff than the regular viewer and maybe you could even point out the differences (and similarities). I got introduced to South Korean movie back in November 2011, and I got so hooked that I watched a bunch of movies and still haven't stopped - I even went to South Korea the next year, and started listening to Korean music (not typical K-pop) and even watched many TV-series since.I love the somewhat different and unique experiences, and the big feels many of them often gives.
I love that Marge Simpson is in it.
You should watch Good Will Hunting. Robin Williams plays a very different kind of therapist. Matt Damon and Ben Aflek wrote it.
Thanks Susan, I already did watch it a few weeks ago! ruclips.net/video/7qGt6tPGcRM/видео.html
Now you need to react to Insomnia directed by Christopher Nolan (Cast: Al Pacino, Robin Williams and Hilary Swank)
I always forget about this movie but I really love it. I cried my eyes out even during this abridged version. Btw, did you recognize Julie Kavner's (Eleanor's) voice. She's the voice of Marge Simpson. 😀
Anyway, I'm sending you Robin Williams's own comment on his hair arms:
ruclips.net/video/ygqR3fDBhe4/видео.html
Yeah my friend did inform me after watching and I couldn't believe I didn't notice it was her.
Well damn lol I have never seen him talk like that before haha
I would love to see you watch whats eating Gilbert grape
It is definitely on the list and has been recommended a lot. I will put it to the polls soon
I like your dialouge in your viewings I think you are on the path to becoming a great director and actor how can you direct if you dont know how to 🎬
Thanks a lot Walt! I needed to read that today, Cheers!

React to eternal sunshine of the spotless mind?
I have seen it unfortunately but it is a brilliant film!
You don't need to read a book, you just need to watch a YT documentary called 'Dr Oliver Sacks and the Real Life 'Awakenings' Video ABC' which will give you all the facts you need.
Here goes...
You knew I was gonna be destroyed didn't you Den
Please react to the first and only the first pirates of the caribbean movie. Pirates of the caribbean: the curse of the black pearl. The writing was really great and has one of theost unique characters of all time
I have also seen this one a few times because of my kids
daddy
Dude, you need sleep.
Although it's very emotional,it's way too much of a popcorn movie for me. It's just too sugary sweet, without any great heft, and having every other doctor be almost "evil" cold and unemotional is ridiculous. Was De Niro great? I'm not too sure, give me Daniel Day Lewis in My Left Foot any day, although sadly even that movie falls into the trap of over sentimentality.
I disagree. I thought DeNiro deserved the recognition he got for this film. He really does portray the physicality of a person with a neurological deficiency very well. The only “sugary sweet” thing about this film was the doctors. The expose on Willowbrook in the 70s is a good documentary to watch if you want to see how evil doctors really were at this time, especially those that worked at state hospitals. I do agree that Day-Lewis is a phenomenal actor AND so is DeNiro.
Wow! What movie did YOU watch?
@@alyssaramirez7014 Well said, Alyssa!!
Perhaps you should read the Dr. Oliver Sacks book this film was based on? It was obviously based on his own clinical experience. But many health care professionals (nurses, orderlies) are portrayed very positively.
The doctors portrayed negatively in administrative positions in a 1960s mental health system where people were warehoused in mental hospitals as a matter of course, often for chronic physical disabilities or illnesses not understood at the time.
