I think the main difference between this film and others is, that it showed us life, real life. The greatest real challenges of life, we avoid to think about, from a perspective we'll usually never see - from the perspective of those who are being called "vegetables" - but are as special persons with their own dreams and things they like or not. I've never seen another film with such a deep message. I think it would have been worth a lot of oscars. But Oscars are for fiction, not for real life.

Afternoon. Although set in Maine, the prison used was the Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield, Ohio. The large main building and Cell Block 1 are now a Museum. They offer tours, can be used for special occasions, and offer overnight cell accommodations for the brave. ( haunted ) The street scenes were primarily N. Main St where the shop owners agreed to have their stores redone to fit the time period. Many still look the same. The halfway house is the Bissman Building, and still looks the same today. (It was a beer distributor, hence the name "Brewery") The store was the E and B Market on 4th Street which has been torn down. I was fortunate to be an extra con in the yard scenes. The premiere was held at Mansfield's Renaissance Theatre, a restored 1929 movie palace, before New York and Los Angeles. I volunteered working the theatre restoration. The prison was also used in the movie "Tango & Cash” and was the Russian cell block in "Airforce One". An interesting side note: In the bad winters, crows from 7 or 8 counties move into Mansfield by the hundreds due to large granaries that used to be between town and the prison. Brook's crow was a natural. The passage of time from the unfiltered Chesterfields to the filtered cigarettes offered Tommy by the warden, and the subtle aging of everyone is superb. Many people miss the subtlety of when Brooks left the prison, you see the prison through the gates, and when Red left you are looking forward over the fields toward the town. And they don't notice when the warden opens the Bible and finds the cut out, that it is the book of Exodus! I am 75 now with Parkinson's and don't get to attend movies very often. I enjoy the reaction videos on RUclips.

For over two years you held the line and delivered to Hitler his first defeats of the war, all while the rest of us were busy getting our crap together. This is one of only two movies that I gave "10's" to six actors in it. The easiest two to give them to were Morgan Freeman and Tom Robbins. I also gave the 10 score to Clancy Brown as Captain Hadley, William Sadler as Heywood, and James Whitmore as Brooks. But I almost gave an 11 score to Bob Gunton's portrayal of Warden Norton. The Warden may very well be one of the greatest cinematic villains ever as far as the levels of cruelty and evil the man was composed of. Absolutely masterful. (Also Gil Bellows was a strong 9 with his portrayal of Tommy Williams.)

One of the most moving films, I have cried through it several times and it has lost none of its impact. Stephen Spielberg, Liam Neeson and Ben Kingsley are masters of their craft. The Holicaust has left an indelible stain on the 20th Century.

The Hitler Youth Knife is more literary liberty than fact. That knife is a hiking knife given to members of the Hitler Youth Corps, which was much like the Boy Scouts in training while being indoctrinated with the ideology of National Socialist German Workers Party (Nazi). The only other group they were issued to were members of the SA. This knife was never part of a soldier of the Wehrmacht. As for the reaction of Carparzo and Mellish, it is highly unlikely an average G.I. would have known what that knife was and its symbolism. The matter of Mellish crying is also not likely as the Allies didn't find out about the fate of Jews in Europe until the first concentration camp was liberated April 4, 1945. The war in Europe ended May 7, 1945. So, following the real timeline, Mellish dies before the Allies knew anything about concentration and death camps. But, after-all, it is Hollywood. Saving Private Ryan is not based on the Sullivan brothers. Fritz Niland became the basis for Private Ryan. He was dropped behind enemy lines on D-Day and spent five days in the French countryside, eventually earning a Bronze star in combat for taking a French. Robert Rodat first came up with the plot in 1994 when he saw a monument in a cemetery in Tonawanda, New York. The monument was to the Niland Brothers - 4 young American men who fought in the Second World War. When three of the Nilands were reported killed, the surviving brother - Fritz - was sent home. This inspired Rodat to write his movie. There are 26 military cemeteries across Normandy, but the most famous and visited site is the poignant Normandy American Cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer. The Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial in France is located in Colleville-sur-Mer, on the site of the temporary American St. Laurent Cemetery, established by the U.S. First Army on June 8, 1944 as the first American cemetery on European soil in World War II. The cemetery site, at the north end of its half mile access road, covers 172.5 acres and contains the graves of 9,387 of our military dead, most of whom lost their lives in the D-Day landings and ensuing operations. In real life with the Nilands, it actually turned out later that another of the brothers was alive - he’d been held captive in a Burmese POW camp. Attempts to point out the "discrepancies" between the stories of Fritz Niland and James Ryan are often misguided, as Ryan is only based on Niland, and is not meant to be (or claimed to be) a completely accurate representation of him. The differences in the two stories seem to stem in part from the fact that the true story of Sergeant Niland and his brothers is often reported inaccurately. The character of Private James Ryan is a mixture of fact and fiction, with some of the fictional elements coming from the erroneous stories about the Niland brothers. The German credited as "Steamboat Willie" who was released by Capt. Miller is not the German who engaged and killed Pvt Stanley "Fish Mellish during hand-to-hand combat. "Steamboat Willie" was in the Heer (Army) of the Wehrmacht and the other was in the Waffen SS which was a paramilitary organization and not part of the Wehrmacht. Originally, the SS uniform differed from the Wehrmacht uniform-whereas the regular army wore field grey, the SS wore black, head to toe (although later the SS did adopt field grey and often wore camouflage pattern uniform. American troops were brown and they didn't wear jackboots. The lightning bolt SS insignia can be seen on the right collar lapel of the German as he passes Upham and reaches the bottom of the staircase. During the Battle at Ramelle, Upham became shell shocked and was unable to save a .30 cal team from a German soldier because he was too frozen with fear to do anything about it. He carried all the .30 caliber ammo at the battle of Ramelle, but was unable to do his job because he was always either pinned down or too afraid to move. He signified the loss of innocence in war and thought that soldiers could be civil, but he later succumbed to the evils of war and made up for his cowardice when he shot Steamboat Willie for killing Miller even after the latter had shown Willie mercy earlier. Not only did Upham represent the loss of innocence of war but he also symbolized the "Every-man". His illusion of neutrality faded when he finally had to pick and side and kill Steamboat Willie, his character revelation being how he finally understood the horrors of war. It became clear that Upham had turned into a hardened and true soldier because of the whole experience. Upham's rank was Tech 5 Corporal (E-5), that meant he was technician in a specialty area. His was maps and translator, he was not a combat infantryman and was never trained for front-line duty. Gunnery Sergent Hartman explained it this way in the movie Full Metal Jacket: "It is your killer instinct which must be harnessed if you expect to survive in combat. Your rifle is only a tool. It is a hard heart that kills. If your killer instincts are not clean and strong you will hesitate at the moment of truth. You will not kill. "The way the next of kin was notified of their loved one was killed in action during WW II was by Western Union telegram delivered by a bicycle riding messenger. If you were being notified of multiple deaths as was the case in this film, notification was done in-person by a military officer, usually from the same branch of service as the deceased when possible. That's why the mother upon seeing the officer exit the car momentarily froze knowing that meant at least 2 of her boys were either KIA or MIA, as the priest exits the car, she staggers and completely collapsed. Unfortunately, you didn't include that in your video presentation. That is one of the most important scenes in the movie. The mother speaks no lines in the movie, yet her breakdown brought a flood of tears form movie goers in theaters across the nation. Another important scene is it is clear from the few lines Ryan's wife speaks that she has never heard the name of Capt. John Miller, this means John has never spoken to her about what happened that day in Ramelle. What many missed is listening to Ryan speaking at the Miller's grave of how he thought about what those 8 men did for him every day was not guilt, but commitment. There are units assigned to recover, bury and mark graves. Usually these were temporary battlefield cemeteries. As hostilities moved farther away, a more permanent site would be selected, at the family's request, whenever possible, the remains would be returned to the United States. At the Normandy Cemetery Visitors Center, you'll find the following inscription: IF EVER PROOF WERE NEEDED THAT WE FOUGHT FOR A CAUSE AND NOT FOR CONQUEST, IT COULD BE FOUND IN THESE CEMETERIES. A very enjoyable and insightful reaction to a wonderful film. With your knowledge of film making it’s such a shame your video was so short, it gave me the impression of being a bit rushed. Forrest’s scene near the end at Jenny’s grave was a masterful piece of acting by Hanks, yet you hardly featured it, such a disappointment.

you will get some people saying it's all rubbish, nothing is true in the movie, but some of the events in this movie did happen, William Wallace did NOT have an affair with the princess of Wales, as she would have only been a child at the time, Wallace did invade England but to what length, we are not 100% sure, but to me, everything in this movie is true, even though it isn't, only because I'm Scottish and live not far from where William Wallace did. lol

Best film ever. It combines the best aspects of a play with everything cinematography has to offer. (Well, it doesn't have any special effects but special effects wouldn't have served any purpose)

For ex the historical William Wallace was not a farmer but a nobleman, the battle at Stirling in the movie is completely wrong; in real it was at a bridge and therefor it is also called the battle of Stirling Bridge, William Wallace was not betrayed by Robert the Bruce, the father of Robert the Bruce suffers of leprosy in the movie, also not true in real the father of Robert the Bruce was Robert Brus VI en he died a natural death, he was also a friend of the Engllish king Eduard I with who he went on crusade. The movie gives with the name Braveheart to much credit to William Wallace because in real the real Braveheart was Robert Bruce VII who became king of Scotland after defeating the English led by the English king Eduard II at Loundoun hill on May 10 1307. Although not entirely historically accurate in some ways, Scotland was a primitive tribal or klanish land and ultimately their subjugation made them a better people that gave us amazing Scotish thinkers like Adam Smith and Biblical scholars as well.

The worst part of this movie is knowing that Amon Goeth was actually WORSE in real life. Spielberg toned him down because he didn't believe an audience would accept just how cartoonishly evil he was.

I love that you noticed the sound design right away... its a huge part of this movie, as I am sure you know now. Also, Michael Mann's iconic cinematography and his love for Lost Angeles, its lightning in a bottle. MM is known for his location scouting adventures. Such a classic.

You should definitely check out THIEF and MANHUNTER, two earlier films by this director. Both are outstanding crime films, and the latter is the first screen appearance of Hannibal Lecter.

You're the only one to mention that sound when Carrie pulls her mother's second hand free. You don't see it, you just hear it being pulled out.

Okay, now for Stone of Destiny (2008).

Entirely inaccurate, entirely moving, inspiring and entertaining.

Nothing exemplifies the true cost of war than Mrs. Ryan on that porch. The most horrific scene in a film full of them.

When I heard you say at the end that you thought "they were going to leave this ambigious" regarding the reunion, I read the earlier drafts of the the film did just that, ending with Red's "hope" dialogue on the bus I believe, but test audiences came out of screenings saying they really wanted to see them meet, so it was added in.

This is a perfect movie, i have seen it well over 50 times... That cast were some of the best actors of that time...

A little FYI: Tommy and Sue were never in on Chris' prank. Sue actually felt awful after what she did (along with the other girls) in the shower scene. When Tommy was struck by the falling bucket, that killed him. When Carrie realized Tommy was dead, that's when she literally lost her mind. He was the only person who had even shown her actual affection--her first dance, her first date, her first kiss, that was something Carrie had never experienced. This was not the first time DePalma used the split screen effect. He first did it in his movie called "Sisters", a psychological drama. Good luck in your film career.

Defiance is another Holocaust-based film that I highly recommend you checking out - packed with drama, horror and action. It’s based on the story of the Bielski partisans (resistance fighters led by the Bielski brothers - Tuvia, Zus, Asael and Aron) hiding in the Belarusian forests during the Nazi occupation of most of the Soviet Union (in which Belarus was part of at the time). Another film I recommend checking out is Valkyrie - based on the Nazi officials led by armed forces Colonel Claus Von Stauffenberg who attempted to kill Hitler on 20th July ‘44. Shows you events leading up to it.
