What a great movie Awakenings was, done by two legendary actors. This film was said to be Williams top favourite film he enjoyed being apart of, same thing for De Niro. The film literally touches your heart, and teaches you the value of life and how many people take it for granted. God bless Williams and Oliver Sacks. Two heros in a better place now. It's also amazing how Williams a few years later would battle a similar brain trauma/disease. Theres no words that can fully describe this movie. Astonishing. I could say the part that hit me the most was when Leonard had said he counden't read anymore, and how he told his lover that it was his final time seeing her, like holy there is so much that could be said about the film, just you can't describe it, you can only see the film for yourself. God bless Williams, Sacks and all those patients who had suffered, and battled. Legends. Such an under-rated film.

Sacks deserves to be always remembered.
He devoted his life to people who were forgotten.
This is a story of a man focused only on the little man.
    The ones others wouldn’t treat.
Of course, its ending isn’t as hopeful as he hoped it would be. But what a man.
    I revisit this video monthly.
We could all be so lucky to have lived such a hopeful life as he did.

Me and my mother took care of him till 2020 when he passed away from Covid regulation. This film was constantly in my mind. my father wanted to live and I helped him. the most valuable thing in life is the human spirt. you could only imagine and be amazed what the human spirt can do. In my knowledge of neuroscience (which is in the connection to neurocomputing) it appears that there is a 'clocksource' problem. All systems that communicate with each other need a consistent oscillator pulse to function. In computer systems we use quartz crystal sets and use clock multipliers to achieve the speed the chips function. This pulse controls consistent switching frequencies so every transistor gate can tie to others in the system.
In the brain there are similar oscillators that send neurochemical/electrical pulses at frequencies. Now our brains are more like many asynchronously functioning systems, they don't all operate at the same speed and rate as each other. Parts of our brain also somehow choose which parts will be a primary initiator of the frequency and what parts will be passive and just use the signals they get from other sections. We also know that sometimes errors in this happen and two sections will generate their own different signals and fight (this is generally a brain seizure). We also know that some people can have neurons that can develop conditions that when they are stimulated give off an interfering signal (this is epilepsy). It seems that what happened with this rash of encephalitis (viral infection of the brain) in the 1920s damaged the ability for dopamine receptors to react/generate that frequency source universally across the many sections of the brain. The brain structures still exist, and many of the will stay functioning doing their own specific tasks, they just are no longer communicating across the entire brain.
Unfortunately as really all the most of the patients that were effected by this syndrome died in between the 1940 and 1980, we really cannot use more comprehensive analysis like fMRI and detailed post-mortem brain imaging to find out what really was going on. And for the most part this condition never really reproduced itself after the 1920s. Many theorize that this could be related to the neurological effects of "long covid", or "chronic fatigue syndromes", and even related to Parkinson’s.

I was struck by how much Diane Sawyer reminded me of Leonard’s love interest in the movie.
The scene that always gets me in Awakenings, though, is when Robin’s character Dr Sayer falters in recording the deteriorating condition of Leonard but Leonard urges him to go on: “Learn! Learn! Learn! Learn!” What a powerful scene that was.

I saw the documentary about Sleepy Sickness & read about it. Apparently there is no known cure. It’s Encephalitis Lethargica is the medical name. After the person develops it they can also develop post encephalitic Parkinson’s disease. In the documentary it showed that Dr. Sacks prescribed L Dopamine which helped the patients come out of the vegetative state. So the L Dopamine is what kept the disease at bay & unfortunately had limitations & side affects.

Could have been an alternate ending but in the movie Leonard does not go back into the world. The last scene is Deniro and Williams working away at the Quiji board.

If I had to guess, "Sacks" may have made some viewers think of the word "nutsack." Sounds dumb, but I don't know the real reason.

    • @READYTEDDYBEAR
