Omg yess I could not stop crying 😩 this was one of the best movies I’ve ever seen in my life. Rest In Peace to Robin Williams to all of them 🙏🏾truly amazing
RIP Dr. Oliver Sacks (July 9, 1933 - August 30, 2015), age 82 And RIP Robin Williams (July 21, 1951 - August 11, 2014), age 63 You both will be remembered as legends
What a great movie Awakenings was, done by two legendary actors. This film was said to be Williams top favourite film he enjoyed being apart of, same thing for De Niro. The film literally touches your heart, and teaches you the value of life and how many people take it for granted. God bless Williams and Oliver Sacks. Two heros in a better place now. It's also amazing how Williams a few years later would battle a similar brain trauma/disease. Theres no words that can fully describe this movie. Astonishing. I could say the part that hit me the most was when Leonard had said he counden't read anymore, and how he told his lover that it was his final time seeing her, like holy there is so much that could be said about the film, just you can't describe it, you can only see the film for yourself. God bless Williams, Sacks and all those patients who had suffered, and battled. Legends. Such an under-rated film.
"devil puttin' a part in, though." Man. 40 years locked in your own body, can't stop shaking your head if you want to come out, still doing your own hair and cracking a joke. Unimaginable spirit.
The man should of won the Nobel peace prize, maybe he did !! I don't know, but a caring doctor that went to the length he did to help these poor people, unbelievably brilliant.
That movie can make the hardest person cry. These clips, movies, et cetera et cetera give me a good smack in the face of how blessed & lucky my self-centered self is. Father God in heaven please forgive me and God bless us and all who read this. No Edits: just adding great movie amazing actors. Rest Easy Mr Williams.
It's so sad to hear that Robin Williams himself thought he was succumbing to Parkinson's but was wrongly diagnosed. He had a brain tumor where he suffered with hallucinations. When I saw this movie, it made me think of how scared he must have been toward the end of his life.
I saw this movie when I was 15 in 1990. Recently in 2013 my father had a massive stroke. half his body was paralyzed and could not talk. he could only use one hand. Me and my mother took care of him till 2020 when he passed away from Covid regulation. This film was constantly in my mind. my father wanted to live and I helped him. the most valuable thing in life is the human spirt. you could only imagine and be amazed what the human spirt can do. Thank youand RIP Dr Oliver.. RIP Penny Marshal, Robin Williams ....Mr Robert Dinero Thank you!!😂
Never take the life we have for granted. Truly God's gift, beyond body, we have a true consciousness that knows only love. They're not just ghosts, they are conscious people who need love
Sacks deserves to be always remembered. He devoted his life to people who were forgotten. This is a story of a man focused only on the little man. The ones others wouldn’t treat. Of course, its ending isn’t as hopeful as he hoped it would be. But what a man. I revisit this video monthly. We could all be so lucky to have lived such a hopeful life as he did.
Loved the movie, but only now many years later after seeing Dr. Sacks in this interview I can truly appreciate the job Robin Williams did on portraying him. He was unbelievable accurate.
I was struck by how much Diane Sawyer reminded me of Leonard’s love interest in the movie. The scene that always gets me in Awakenings, though, is when Robin’s character Dr Sayer falters in recording the deteriorating condition of Leonard but Leonard urges him to go on: “Learn! Learn! Learn! Learn!” What a powerful scene that was.
Here Sacka looks like a lion. I love him so much trough his works in medical literature. He was a wonderful human. Hugs from Argentina and thanks a lot for this documet
I worked in a psychiatrc hospital and know the highs & lows of seeing a patient go back home fixed with medication ! - Knowing you have to keep that barrier between them & yourself ? -You still get a buzz -After we lost Robin Williams I went to a local record & dvd store in UK -And was dissapointed that that 'Awakinings' - was not available to buy off the shelf on such a big company like that ?the other one of Williams movies I wanted was 'World according to Garp' -I had both on VHS but alas no player ? - But it was out of print on Dvd ? Awakenings is a wonderful movie all the cast do a fantastic job ! -Thanks for showing this ! S.B. British Isles God bless those People !
Oliver Sacks is a fantastic writer. I loved "The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat." That book came out around the same time "Art of the Deal" was the #1 bestseller, just as an aside. I worked for the now defunct WaldenBooks at the time.
I remember watching this movie as a kid and it moved me deeply. I've always liked this kind of movies Lorenzo's Oil is another one I saw in elementary school. Based in true stories movies have always been my jam.
Essentially an autoimmune version of locked-in syndrome. Have there been any findings regarding what the antibodies were, and what could keep them at bay?
I saw the documentary about Sleepy Sickness & read about it. Apparently there is no known cure. It’s Encephalitis Lethargica is the medical name. After the person develops it they can also develop post encephalitic Parkinson’s disease. In the documentary it showed that Dr. Sacks prescribed L Dopamine which helped the patients come out of the vegetative state. So the L Dopamine is what kept the disease at bay & unfortunately had limitations & side affects.
If only Robin and Dr. Sacks had still been in contact at the time just before he took his life, I truly believe the doctor could have helped him! I really think that Dr. Sacks would’ve been able to help him with his LBD, and as a result he would still be here today!
@@joanofarc33 Hey there, i didn't know what it was either so i googled it ha ha. It means Lewy Body Dementia, I didn't read it all but it seems Robin Williams was in the first stages of this disease. So very sad. All the best , Marie :)

Could have been an alternate ending but in the movie Leonard does not go back into the world. The last scene is Deniro and Williams working away at the Quiji board.
The brain was clearly getting use to the medicine! That's why no other medicine and drug worked on those with severe mental/neurological disorders and will likely still not work if say the neurologists were to ever try again! The brain of say someone with severe autism is clearly because of the neurons and synapses not being right, like someone with bipolar, they have a chemical imbalance inside their brain
Thing is that their muscles might not have atrophied, as they were not paralysed. All the patients probably had good muscle tones.
