- Sacramento may not be widely recognized for its Modernist architecture, but the city boasts a significant number of Modernist homes and buildings, particularly in the northern region. John Harvey Carter was a pivotal figure in shaping Sacramento's architectural landscape, contributing to both private commissioned residences and commercial structures, as well as playing a key role in the establishment of the American River Parkway. With a portfolio encompassing over 400 buildings in Northern California, Carter left an indelible mark on the region.
Adding to the unexpected charms of Sacramento, The Nittler Residence which was built in 1963 by John Harvey Carter stands out as one of the rare homes situated on a suburban hillside in the area. Karen and Najib stumbled upon this distinctive property while perusing homes for sale in their neighborhood, and the story of how they came to own it is both surprising and perhaps fateful to some. The residence retains much of its original character, boasting features like wood paneling, terrazzo flooring, a spiral staircase entry, and copper facade fireplaces. Its unique layout seamlessly accommodates the needs of the family of five, with the yard, patio, and hillside areas flowing effortlessly from the rear of the home. You can rest assured that the home is in the right hands and will be beautifully preserved for years to come.

Nothing beats the vibe of a well designed and well preserved Mid Century Modern home. They really need to be owned by folks who appreciate what they are.
It had such a warm, natural, beautiful feel to it, inside and out. Lovely home and a great video.
Agree! My favorite style. Gorgeous!
I live in Carmichael, on the river. I toured this home when it was on the market. It was very cool. I’m so pleased to see the new owners preserving and expanding the legacy of this home. Beautiful! I wish I knew them!
Glad you enjoyed it!
To think that your first reaction was to say that this is not a house for a family only to realize that it was actually built for a family... it is absolutely priceless. An amazing house for a beautiful family. Thank you so much for sharing your experience...
I love the geodesic dome in the yard. My father was an architect and a devotee of Buckminster Fuller. So I also had a dome in my back yard as a child. I was an MCM child, now an MCM adult. I love the warmth of this home. ❤
Lovely, warm house perfectly integrated into its site. The slab wood millwork with the diminutive exposed hinge hardware for it is sublime.
It’s beauty!
You always shoot your feature homes beautifully, but this video was stunning. Every detail shot, both interior and exterior was phenomenal.
I loved how there were so many exterior detail shots. Beautiful home.
You guys look like good caretakers and the advice in the end was spot on, my family too lives in a 1961 custom built modernist house and it's true, if you want perfection it would drive you nuts. But if you embrace it for what it is and accept imperfections it's awesome to live in houses like these and they should be embraced and protected as important postcards to a great optimistic time in American history.
Nicely done! Beautiful home and family. 1963 was a great year for all things vintage.
Beautiful property. Two areas stand out for me. 1. The Kitchen and 2. The backyard. Great video as always.
Love 🥰 so awesome these guys have embraced living here as a family home - which was what these houses were intended as; not museum pieces.
Wonderful atmosphere, light and materials! Views into the house from the courtyard are amazing also ❤
wow what a hidden gem! love the architecture and am excited about doing some research on John Harvey Carter. Thank you for sharing your home and experience! may you and your family enjoy many more wonderful memories there!
This channel is such a gem! Thank you for beautifully sharing these stunning homes!
Meanwhile living less than 10 miles from this house...my husband and I can dream 😂 beautiful home. So cool to know I live so close to such beautiful homes. Sometimes being surrounded by fast-built cookie cutter homes makes you forget these places exist.
How come this house looks more modern and futuristic than houses built now?
very beautiful and the first young family I have seen living in an original MCM home
Lovely episode.
I love it. wow.
Beautiful, wonderful home and family. As a teenager, I had a good friend whose family lived in a somewhat similar home. Thought, at the time, "Oh, cool house," and that was it. Now I wish I'd really learned more about it-I'm sure it had an amazing story to tell. Thanks for telling this one!
Great video post. Beautiful home. And so refreshing to listen to a couple who clearly enjoy the building and appreciate both the quirks and strengths. Nice also to listen to someone people talk about a building not using hushed, art-school language....
Beautiful place, cool family.
Beautiful house.
Great work as usual!!
Gorgeous home
Wow!!! Amazing in every way!! This channel is my favorite go to for appreciation & inspiration! Bravo 👏🏻
Love it 😊
Magnificent
gorgeous
Thank for the video!
Wabi sabi and midcentury perfect. Cool pad
It’s a beautiful house!
amazing home - I love this so very much. Wish there were no shoes worn in the home but that's just me. :)
Best lighting ever. Also the music track on this is so good. What is it?
It's me! It's an original score I did for Open Space :) I really appreciate the nice comment!
@@AaronTebache man you nailed it. This is exactly the kind of atmosphere and feeling i love in ambient music. Great work!!
Thank you. Great video showing so special home. Is there a way to see the house layout? How did JH Carter distributed the different living spaces? The "public area" is well showed, but where is the rest and how was it conceived? Many thanks
Great minus the artificial turf
❤❤❤
I kept saying that while watching. "Embrace the cinder blocks. Embrace the cinder blocks."
❤
wow
Великолепный дом
Yes!!
👌
👍👍👍
Классный!
Ok., my heart miss micro second of beat because of title on video
8:34 anyone know what size Nelson saucer pendant this is?
Can someone please tell the viewer what the girl in the window is doing on the preview picture? Is she doing what I thin she’s doing? And how did that pick make it to the actual landing pick on RUclips?
The girl is hanging out on her counter top smiling at the camera from the pass through window...
Soooo. What was he talking about there at the end?
So Nittler went here instead of escaping to Argentina?
Americans see a few stairs and immediately think it’s not safe for children.
Anyone else click on this video because of the person spread out on the counter in the video preview icon? 👀
Haha
Palo Alto?
As nice as this house is, I wouldn't want to say “I live in Nittler's residence” to anyone.
Finally, FINALLY, a beautiful home owned by NORMAL PEOPLE!!
Please bring us more videos with normal families, instead of the airheads that seem to permeate the landscape...lol!
I agree! I like seeing normal people enjoying a cool house, instead of weird yuppies that inherit millions of dollars and then fetishized architecture into a museum like setting.
Must be nice to be wealthy.
The house wasn’t expensive, it was about $700,000 (which is very reasonable for being in the capital of California). I toured it when it was for sale.
"Promo sm"
But how much did it cost? Lol
$800k in 2019. Public records are great.
I would havetk.change my last name, ngl.
Please why are there two front doors separated by stairs from driveway leading to the same hall? Love this place though
Lovely home that's been beautifully preserved but OY VEYYYYYY IS IT DARK!!! And that spiral staircase being the only way to the front doors is a reeeeeeeally "unique" feature that makes it non-functional.
