Weirdest Games Ever - Blood Wake

- As if a ‘Pirate’ game with speedboats, torpedoes and miniguns wasn’t weird enough, this was also “initially hailed as ‘The Halo Killer’ by Boat Magazine.”, according to Wikipedia. That’s enough to shiver anyone’s timbers.

This game was cool AF as a kid
What about now?
as a kid
Hell yeah!! This game blew my freaking mind as a kid... the most realistic water physics i had ever seen to date... this game felt truly "next gen"when i first got it... another BANGER was "Tao Feng: Fist of the lotus"...
Thus and Munchs Odeysse had the Best Water Physics. Than cane Elderscrolls... O.o
Here's my contribution to Ashton's fact department: a sampan is a relatively flat-bottomed Chinese and Malay wooden boat. Some sampans include a small shelter on board and may be used as a permanent habitation on inland waters. The design closely resembles Western hard chine boats like the scow or punt.
The days where " A Demo" ment a small trailer of a game I'm sure back in the day they had " playable demo" on games that actually were playable
You'd get demo discs out of Game freak magazines
I don’t know why, but Peter’s “Thanks!” after Ben welcomed everyone to the show made me laugh.
Boring maths teacher is never boring
Happy to see how the game grows on you over time. Getting comfortable with the controls takes a bit of practice, but the rewards are worth it. The most challenging part is adapting to the water physics and recognizing that a bit of lag is actually quite realistic. Since the video only covers the first 4 of 28 story missions, you don't show any of the other boat types that are unlocked (over a dozen, most with 2 to 4 variants). There is more variety in the settings, too, with some pretty impressive (for the time) sea and weather states. The Battle Mode is a collection of small arena maps that support 4-player split-screen.
My dyslexic ass misread the game as "Blood Wank"
No one wants one of them :)
@@matthewbraith0411 I beg to differ...
@@isaiahavery9748 I don't judge :)
when you beat it a bit to much "BLOOOOD WANK"make the fire man spit blood
It's weird how this game came out and was in the "launch games" video even, but Nightcaster came out literally one day after Bloodwake and wasn't a launch title. 🤷🏼♂️
Also, one day you guys will read "non-interactive video" and not be shocked it's not a playable demo. A demo of a game doesn't have to be playable, it's just a demonstration. 🤣
Ashton brings her level of chaotic "calm" once more. Dunno where you two kidnapped her from but I'm glad she's stuck with you Vidiots.
I'll always see Bloodwake and Crimson Skies as sort of "sister games" one on the water and one in the sky, they had very similar vibes while being different.
Not only did Nightcaster come out, it got a sequel.
Mediocre review scores for the first Nightcaster game, even worse review scores for the sequel. I can see why nobody remembers these games.
I honestly wouldn't call this game weird it's just Twisted Metal/Vigilante 8 on water.
This game reminds me so much of Crimson Skies, but on water. lol, Excellent video as always, the "I didn't actually do research" vibe was amazing!
Loved this game as a kid even tho I never played the story mode just boat battles against friends. The best was having everyone use that little canoe looking one that only had a machine gun turret lol
Did you ever play the Blood Ball mode? It's a 2v2 "soccer" match (imagine Rocket League set on water and released 15 years earlier). It was an Easter Egg that you unlocked by entering a cheat code during the title screen. Controller must be plugged into port 1.

"The Duke" is the Chuck Norris of game controllers. I honestly loved the original x-box controller... Miss it.
Also Fusion Frenzy's _Sumo_ game is a sleeper hit...
Ben (to audience): welcome back
Peter in response: thanks
I bought an og Xbox to replay this. Definitely deserves a sequel. The soundtrack is one of the most underrated pieces on the planet
The audio for the game is definitely underappreciated. I asked our composers for something aggressive and uptempo ... hard rock / heavy metal feel, but with some Asian instruments thrown into the mix. I think they did an amazing job. The audio programmer should have won a technical achievement award for his work. If you mute the music and voice and don't fire your weapons while moving, you'll note that the sound of the water against the hull is affected by the hull shape, speed, and sea state! The game became a Platinum Series Hit, so a sequel was assumed to be a done deal. We spent 4 or 5 months working on it while the studio head negotiated with Microsoft. Sadly, the deal fell through.
9:35 Wasn't that Lloyds TSB?
Love to see y'all playing weird games! Keep it up!
9:33 That's Lloyds TSB Peter!
Do you guys think this game is bad comment down below if you think it’s weird I think it’s the best thing I’ve ever seen in my life😊
I wasn't expecting a Vengabus reference on two gaming channel this week (the other being Outside Xbox).
Had this one back in the day and I loved it!
I loved this game growing up! It's basically Twisted Metal on the water!
Ironically, it was originally pitched as exactly that, but Stormfront wasn't getting any interested publishers. Fortunately, Microsoft had come up with idea of a Crimson Skies on water and were shopping for a studio with a suitable boat combat engine. Stormfront assured them that their engine could support a story-driven, mission-based game, and then hired me to be the lead designer (having worked on the X-Wing series.)
Amazing video, this was quite an unusual find!
13:33 Imagine if all three Main Hosts of Team Triple Jump would have made the Jump.....they would have made the first ever On-Screen Triple Jump.......what a missed opportunity!
I played the hell out of this game back in the day!
TripleJump just casually announcing that they're breaking copyright laws.
15:22 - thanks for the nostalgia blast, Team TripleJump! 🧡
The Sampons bit is destroying me, did not expect it to go into pro-shop lifting areas, but I'm 100% here for it, absolutely hilarious to this idiot.
This legit used to be one of my fave games growing up
yeah, UK doesn't tax Sampans, but in Scotland, all women get free Sampans when they reach that special age. So if i was a woman, i'd live in ScottishLand and save all kinds of money, not having to buy Sampans, or Maxi-Pans. The kind with wings.
6:15 Ben is a young John Travolta mixed with Christopher Walken.
4:16 Nightcaster did release at some point. I briefly played its sequel Nightcaster 2 Equinox when I was a teen but the controls were horrendous in my opinion and I took it back to the used gaming store I bought it from. If I remember correctly, you controlled the direction of magic casting with the right joystick.
15:53 the three of them talking for minutes about the input lag, passing the controller to try to make the jumps, and when Ben finally makes the jump… cover the entire screen with the face cams 😂
Finally! ASHTON!
Have you thought of doing a premiere? I think it could be fun to all hang out and watch.
Great video everyone!
For whatever reason I remember playing this at a computer cafe a bunch of times super vividly everytime thinking “this just isn’t living up to its name at all”
The dev team was very much opposed to the name chosen by the producer at Microsoft. There is no blood in the game at all. So, false advertising to anyone looking for gore, and foolishly frightening away anyone who doesn't want gore in their game. Ironically, there was another developer working on a fantastical age of sail pirate game that wast to named Blood Wake because it had a special attack move that left a bloody wake.
Ben: "I'm gonna hold fire the entire time."
Ash: "yeahhhh. Don't. Stop. Shooting."
😂😂
That was the first game I got for my OG Xbox. The water physics was off the charts for that time, and it was a good game. But looking back now, I should have gotten Halo along with that game and the system. Back then, I had no idea Halo was going to be a huge phenomenon. So, a few months later, I got Halo, and my god, I was blown away.
I remember this title! I still own it to this day
Surely most games these days fall under the weird category.
Ashton is extreme cuteness.
The first game i ever bought with my own money
The punning in this episode is MWAH!
Loved this game. Was a lot of fun.
Ashton: let’s go slower.
Ben: 👁️👁️ I refuse.
Loved this game growing up
Holy shit, is that a Duke? I thought they were all destroyed because their gravitational pull was effecting the tides.
I swear Ashton voices the score updates in FIFA 23.
According to Wikipeda, NightCaster was released the day after this in North America.
I owned nightcaster for the Xbox. It was an okay game with a pretty cool idea but insanely hard from what I remember
I loved this game! Weird for sure!
Why is this not backwards compatible on series x/s Microsoft
There actually is a Jackie Chan cartoon video game on the GBA. It's a very average beat em up
Love this game till this day
🎵oo it's a speedboat🎵 - ben in the xbox launch titles video
Is there any way you guys can get good ole Jim Ross to guest star on Weirdest Games? Asking for a friend
overboard on the ps1 is a good weird game
I would really like to see a Worst Games Ever episode about Nightcaster. It was terrible. I never played the sequel, though.
Anybody who is thinking of sealing sampons could go to Scotland, where we give them to you for free, or let a person who lives in Scotland know and we will send them to you for free 😎
Love y’all! Ready for fun trash haha
Does Peter think coolly means someone is trying to act cool? 28:33
Don't steal tampons though!
Don't you diss the duke controller!
Did Ben make a video with KindaFunny where the guy from KindaFunny was roleplaying as a PS Vita and Ben was some sort of judge I think? I can't remember because I fell asleep right at the beginning and now I'm questioning if it is even real because I cannot find it anywhere now?? Anyone know if this video is real and could you link it please it looked good, I think.
hey! that's KindaFunny actually!
Is this really that weird though? :D fun video anyway
"Asian Themed" = I saw some kung fu movies, and that is the extent of my research
When I joined the project, the narrative theme was described as "a kung fu movie on water with gunboats."
Ooo looks fun 😊
Damn, this game looks pretty good.
And she did it on the DUKE!!!
I love these 😂
The holy 🥪
Are you guys really gamers if you’ve never heard of any of those demos or bloodwake?
All of these were pretty well known at the time
Night caster was a real game it was the best. I had it
talk about the laziest way to do cutscenes ever lmao
Not lazy. Limited by budget (we were given a fraction of what Halo got, and less time for development). We opted to devote most of our art team's time to making the game look as good as possible instead of making cutscenes. Cutscenes are ridiculously expensive.
Like always. Looks awsome against an PS2 game. No Pixel Mania.
And a 4 Player Splitscreen Mode.
By the way...
Nightcaster have 2 Episodes.
Nightcaster 1 and 2.
Bouth for Xbox.
Excuse me... you put Fusion Frenzy on WORST games ever? The little information bubble must be incorrect...
#releasetheashtoncut
at least this original xbox exclusive didnt end up on worst games ever
👽
Another game in my collection - I’m starting to feel called out 🤭🫶
"Hot dogs." (The super dry delivery...mmm chef's kess kess 🤌)
