The Best & Worst Oil Filter -13 Oil Filters Compared In Head-2-Head Challenge - Fram, Mobil 1, Wix
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 11 дек 2024
- I cut open 13 oil filters to compare who is the best. Five of the oil filters were for conventional oil and the other eight filters were for synthetic oil. These are the brands of oil filters I cut open: Mobile1, Fram, STP, K&N, Wix, Bosch, Mopar, Motorcraft, AC Delco, and Supertech. This is an Ultimate Oil Filter Challenge, conventional vs synthetic oil filters. This is the best oil filter comparison I have done. Remember an OEM filter is always recommended by the dealer. Once and for all we will see who makes the best ultra synthetic oil filter.
My next oil filter video might be on which oil filter can filter the most dirt or particles out of oil the best. What oil filter are you going to buy now that you have seen what's inside of them?

oxmanagain Wow you did a great job on this! You truly took a lot of time and effort, Thank you!
Very good job !
Thank you for the video, it helped me out alot!
Thank you Sir for doing this. The next step would be to have the same oils tested after the same amount of time in the same vehicle, to see how well they filter and/or how long they really last.
oxmanagain 😨👏😨👏😨👏😨👏😨👏😨👏
You put an unbelievable amount of thought, effort and pride into this video!...It's sad that some people don't fully appreciate how hard it is to create something like this or at least appreciate the creators time. I just wanted to tell you how amazingly helpful this was and how much I *sincerely* appreciate the gift of your time and effort!! Thank You Sir!
This. Also noticed very little mistakes/cuts. He does a fantastic job.
Sure they do...I do
Yes, plus the expense of buying all these filters!
it was an amazing and selfless video.I had to subscribe.
Good point... a video like this takes a lot of time to make.
Yo... I found my long lost brother. For real, I start talking oil filters and motor oil around other black people and they look at me like I'm an agent. Keep up the good work bruh... respect
@1234 well said...God created all the races, were created equal...if you have a passion for the tech side of things, then associate yourself with like- minded people...be confident in your abilities but act with humility and good things will always come back to you

@@-MrRichBiker1967 yea I'm here cause there's alot of filters to cut up and look in.
This is the most comprehensive study I've ever seen. Very educational. Thank you for sharing
I really appreciate your comment. Thanks for watching.
CrowdSurfingGeezer it's not comprehensive without Purolator, otherwise it's a good presentation.
Would have been better if they were all for the same application and not just random ones off the shelf.
Thank you for taking the time to let us see the insides of the oil filters! I wonder every time I change mine how it compares to others. You answered many questions for me. I thank you. Keep up the great work. I feel bad for my early engines that I used so many paper / cardboard filled Fram filters on. Still better than my VW's that only had a wide wire mesh to catch big parts. Oh how times have changed.
You're welcome and I felt the same way that was why I made the video. I appreciate you for sharing your stories and thanks for watching.
I can't believe the work you put into this. This is great work. Thank you.
Now I know what filter I should get. Fram and wix. Thanks you for your time and research.
You're welcome and thanks for watching. I appreciate your comment.
Thanks I appreciate your comment and thanks for watching.
While I was watching I thought "Dr. Ben Carson examines oil filters", LOL. Calm and precise.
I've been using Mobil One lately, because the box says 10 or 20 thousand miles and I'm lazy. The Wix and Fram look great. I might look into those.
I've been a mechanic for over 40 years and have never seen anyone explore oil filters as you have done here. Very interesting and thank you for sharing this. It pays to know the difference. Cheap oil filters and cheap for a reason I see. You have a blessed day as well.
Thank you and I appreciate your comment you have a blessed day as well.
One of the few reviewers that actually take their time to thoroughly explain everything. Subbed
yeah you just tipped me over that fence with that observation...
thanks for all the time and money you expended to make this video so we can take advantage of your testing
i would really love to see a flow test on filters to see how much pressure u lose from certain filters, but good video thx
That's a lot of time, money, work plus sharing with others. You are a Good Man. Much appreciated!
How have I not seen this video and channel sooner? You sir, are a great creator! Nice production.
I appreciate your complement.
Very impressive video. Thanks for cutting open and comparing the filter media themselves. Wix and Mobil 1 for me!
very impressive video! - and as an ASE master tech with 35 years mechanic experience, I am not easily impressed - subscribed!
I appreciate your comment and thanks for the support.
Omg been wanting to know this for years ,my brother who was an auto mechanic always said FRAM. You just confirmed it . Watched the whole video appreciate your effort so much . Great job getting the truth out my brother. Cant thank you enough ,keep the coming ,nd yes I still work on all my vehicles and all my children's vehicles and I save money doing it that way always needed to know the best filter and you just did that for me thank you again
Great video. My goto filter has been Mobil. Since watching your entire video attentively, I have switched to the Fram Ultra in all of my vehicles. I personally do not go for extended change intervals hype. I am only after maintaining the cleanest oil possible. Thanks to your video it looks like the Fram Ultra meets my wants. Good job! Well done! I really appreciate the amount of time you put into planning this out, the expense of the materials, and the time to do it all.
I am a 78 year old retired mechanic and garage owner. I done same thing to set up a selling point. Not that many filters! The wix won the contest hands down. Thank you very much!
This is an excellent video that clearly shows how each are made up. Thank you for putting this out here. That's not a cheap demonstration so thank you for sharing your findings.
I have to agree with the majority of the comments here that you are to be commended for the time and effort that you put into this video. My only differing comment is that rather than referring to the filters by "regular oil" vs "synthetic oil", I would refer to them as low cost(cheap) filters vs premium oil filters. Nothing says that I can run conventional motor oil & use a premium oil filter, and vice versa. It's also a plus that use proper safety equipment & the right tools for the job. You also get points with me for the organization & cleanliness of your garage!!
Good point.
Very great video. I have used most of these oil filters with zero issues but at the same time I do not drive much about 6,000 miles per year. I personally like the Fram Ultra Synthetic, Wix XP, and another filter that was know featured, known as Purolator Boss. We appreciate the time and dedication to this video.
I do 6000 miles a month minimum.
Thank you for the time, money and effort that went into this comparison. Things like this is what makes youtube worthwhile.
You my friend are in-F'n-depth !!
you are correct...it IS in fact the video we all are looking for...
Thank you for your hard work and efforts !
This is a great video, friend. I work at an auto parts store, and always appreciate the good information you guys on RUclips provide so I can give my customers the best recommendations for these types of products.
Thanks!
This, in my opinion, is one well thought out comparison between brands and manufacturers. Keep up the good work, and thank you for doing the research for us. 👍🏻
I appreciate your comment and thanks for watching.
Well done, sir! I also appreciate you going through the safety process you used when you opened up the filters!
I only watched this video to validate that I buy fram ultra synthetic filters. I'm happy with this. I think they offer good value they're anywhere from $8 to $11 and I switch them every other oil change.
changed my oil not too long ago after that, low oil pressure with StP filter, change it out with mobile one filter,,pressure was back to normal, will never cheap out on a filter again,, thought my oil pump or sending unit was bad. Thanks for the video.
Have you ever used an high end filter for an extended interval and noticed a change in the oil pressure that would indicate the flow rate of the oil was affected by the amount of contaminants building up in the oil filter over time?
I just like to say thank you for the time you spent comparing the oil filters. I was pretty skeptical about buying a Fram ultra synthetic oil filter. After watching the video I would say those filters are Good. Keep up the great work! Thanks!
Charles Bellino I have used Fram Oil Filters for years & No Problems with them at all. I also use Fram Air Filters.
Damn great video. I’ve running synthetic in my fords for around 10 years and using motorcraft filters. I didn’t even know there was filters designed for synthetic oil. Thanks for the free education 😎
Motorcraft oil filters are very good filters. Purolater makes them for ford vehicles. Purolater made the very first oil filters for vehicles. With them being the first filter company with all them years, you know that they should know more about filters than the rest. I use 5w30 synthetic blend motorcraft oil and filter and change it every 5,000 miles. They say the filter can be used between 6,000 to 7,000 miles depending on how new your vehicle is. I change it at 5,000 miles because i don't want to run the filter to its limits.
Thanks for the non bias comparison of oil filters.
crazy, its been 4 years and im back about to do my first oil change. thank you for this amazing video!
Always wondered what was in my Fram Ultra. Very good video, thanks. That was a lot of work.
Mr. Oxman, Sir. I salute you sir for your very in-depth detailed and well organized demonstration. I wholeheartedly agree with the comments below to include the time, money and effort you put into this very educational and extremely helpful lesson on oil filters. Nice product comparison OX. My favorite segment is when you looked closely at the Fram and Wix internals. Thanks for the effort you invested in this expose----much appreciated!
Thanks for watching.
Fram filters use to be awful a couple years ago - glad they upgraded their brand.
I'll still stick to Mobile1 extended - they've never let me down yet and still a quality filter.
Paul
I think these Frams are a premium version. The cheap ones aren't as good.
GREAT FILTERS MOBIL 1, TOP QUALITY PARTS THROUGHOUT
I watched another comparo video and the Fram looked inferior, so much so I've told myself never Fram. This video gave me a better perspective. I will consider the Fram. Blessings
Frams aren't bad, as long as you aren't getting the basic ones.
@@654Crossman I tend to agree with you, but as long as you use the orange filter for just the basic oil change interval (3K miles), it should be OK. I def would not use that orange for an extended interval (more than 5Kmiles)
I know you spent a lot of time and some money as well in order to make it. Good job and thanks for the information
I felt compelled to comment on the quality of this video! Top shelf, great job.
I really appreciate your comment and I thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts.
Oxmanagain, you sir, have done an excellent job of some research. I applaud your effort, thought, and tenacity and say thank you for providing useful info.
I appreciate your well worded comment and thanks for watching.
I have been in the auto repair and an auto parts store business for 48 years and have had a similar interest in oil filters. I look at filtering test results and overall quality. To make a long story short I also use the Wix oil filter. It has great quality.
Mad props for the time and science you put I to this.
Thanks for taking the time and expense to show us how all the oil filters compare.
And here I thought that K&N was the best...
Great Video; thank you! -👍
K&N is definitely the easiest to work with. That’s a win for me
@@briancarbajal9 : So is "Fram" --- with the rubberized coating. However, from what I've seen, they are both Cheap-Cheap...
Great job my man. I know this took allot of effort on your part. For this I thank you.
Thank you for realizing that.
Very helpful information here. Blogs and forums are full of opinions, but I was looking for factual information that would lead me to an informed decision. Thank you for taking the time and effort to present this comparison in a manner that was not based on your opinions, but rather an actual analysis of the varying filters available. Honestly, I was surprised at the results and will be going with a filter I never thought I would buy prior to watching this video.
Thanks for watching and I appreciate you for taking the time to leave a comment. I was also surprised myself.
Adding the actual specs (in microns) that the filters are capable of filtering would be a very good, objective measure to add. Also, are these filters all for the same vehicle? That would also be important when comparing. Thanks for taking the time to do this! Have a blessed day!
15:50 I've been wanting this for YEARS ever since I was 10 working with my grandfather in the garage. Main reason I only buy Fram is solely for that coating on the filter, makes oil changes a thousand times easier. Good to know that the filters are also amazing. Thank you for confirming my Fram bias lol :) love the vid!
Love that grip.
OEM filters are the best from what I’ve found. Especially on newer vehicles with variable valve timing. For my nissan and Toyota there actually cheaper then most off the shelf units. Around 10$ Canadian. It’s Hard to shake a stick at that price.
This video is exactly what I needed to see oxmanagain. I subscribe to Consumer Reports to get product information and they didn't have anything on the best oil filter. But you sir filled the ticket I needed info on. Thanks so much for the details you provided. I've done oil changes on every one of my vehicles in the past 50 years and always had that same question in the back of my mind, if I was spending my money wisely as I want to get the best product for my money as most everyone else does too. Well done.
wow, 13 filters!!!! Excellent review. Wish you had an Amsoil filter to add to the list.
Interesting thing was that the mobile 1 filter had the most surface was the longest, which means it had the most filtering surface. That probably makes them to filter much quicker. It also probably means, the lower chances for the pass valve to open. A very good video. Many thanks for it. I know it was done a few years ago, but it was still a pleasure to watch it.
Well done sir, I don’t know what I enjoyed more, watching your video or the odd looks I got from people who asked what I was watching... I guess you either get it or you don’t!
Thanks and I agree with you. Thanks for watching.
Been wondering for years what’s good and what’s not. Seems Best Buy premium oil filter for couple dollars more. It’s hard knowing if manufacturers being honest and cut cost. You really invested your time to influence us! Thanks!!
Been using Tough Guard & Ultra Synthetic for years and you've convinced me to stick with them.
Dunno if I’d do the tough guard, that paper has been known to break apart and get in the engine if you leave it in there just a little too long.
Thanks for crunching this information. I subscribed. I wish I had found your site a year ago. I always use NAPA silver/Wix. Looking forward to learning from you.
I'm a sucker for an experiment like this. Good job!
When in doubt. I always come back to this vid. Thanks for this. Very detailed and generous video to make. Thank you!
I appreciate you as well.
Good job. I have been in the auto parts business for many years. I remember (about 10 years ago) cases of AC/Delco were getting lighter. We cut one open and found the cardboard.
I just bought the oil filter, you enriched my brain. I am going to use Fram Synthetic. Fantastic video sir.
Thank you for doing such a comprehensive review! This is the first video I've seen by you and you were very professional, articulate, mannerful, and thorough. Definitely the best oil filter comparison video I have ever seen! Liked & subscribed!
I appreciate your comment and thanks for watching.
Thank you Sir for the time and money you put into making this video. I'll be using Fram Ultra Synthetic oil filter for my new 2020 Camaro 1SS. Keep up the good work and I do appreciate you doing this video. God bless you Sir and have a bless day.
Great video! Very in depth! Found a slight mistake though! @ 18:05 you picked up the three filters, you mixed WIX up, (wix was the white colored one; two frams were red and brown) ive always used WIX filters with mobile 1 full synthetic oil as my combo! On all my cars and this helps knowing I've been using the right product for 10+ years! Thanks for the video!
Impressive, no wasted words, lots of apples, good quality video.
Thank you so much for taking the time to create this video! I am so impressed !
God bless,
Thanks for making this video, whenever I go to buy an oil filter, with the knowledge you just presented it will help me greatly to make an educated choice. May the force be with you!
Great work! The best filters catch about 99% of the particles, down to 20 microns (Fram Ultra Synthetic) or 25 microns (Royal Purple and Mobil 1) but not every filter provides this info.
I recently took apart an AC Delco professional filter and I was most impressed by that! Nylon cage, many more pleats than even the Wix XP. Great video! 👍
AC Delco is just a supertech filter...nothing special.
@@Fanofou82 If you know filters, if it has a nylon cage, it is something special!
Hi Oxmanagain, thank you so much for your extensive (even expensive money and/or time-wise) evaluation of all these filters. Echoing other commenters, a lot of thought and attention to details went into this video production. My only suggestion, if I may, would be to have used the same size (specs) filters i.e. the different filters that fit the same car as I believe that some filters dimension/specs are so unique on lesser known brand (VW 1.8/1.9 TDI diesel engines) that they are outsourced to another company and relabeled "Napa Gold" for example.
Thank you again for such an informative and eye-opening video, Ciao, L (Ford Motor Co. engineering, retired)
Thanks for your kind words and the tips.
@@oxmanagain , My pleasure, the least I can do - Peace be with you, Ciao, L

Excellent review! Very informative and the best one I have ever seen. Thank you for taking the time to inform. Also, the video quality was well done!
Thank you for taking the time to share your findings with us.
Interesting, I remember the glory days of stock car racing & STP was the way to go. Then Fram. I thought the K&N would out class them all. This was very informative. Thank you for sharing. Drive safe.
So Wix XP and Fram ultra synthetic, got it thanks!
Royal K Performance just got fram ultra because it filters up to 20 microns wix xp only up to 30 I believe go check for yourself. Fram is the winner.
Agreed. Bosch had a good placement for the oil stop. Obviously better engineering. Its Also surprising that the cheapest one was actually middle of the road as far as quality. The K & P didn't get a fair shake since it was a motorcycle filter or something.
You Wish good point. So good flow with oem standards. I like the keep changing your oil to keep it clean.
@@Thedirtylittlesecret good frams are really good filters. But their cheap ones are garbage.
A few years ago I was bouncing around all sorts of filters. By far out of them all, the wix xp quieted my engine and gave it much smoother starts and lost vibration. I've used K&N in the past and have has no issues. I've just personally noticed the wixs improvement
Great comparison. Was a dealer tech for 30+ years. If customer complaint was engine noise, with fram filter. Change filter, noise would go away. I had to replace engine because of frame filter, piston knock. This particular engine had nozzles that sprayed oil up on to cylinder walls. Fram filter material plunged nozzles on two cylinders.
Absolutely great video. Very thorough and informative. I was considering switching from the Fram ultra synthetic to Mobile 1 or K&N but after watching this I'm sticking to the high end Fram.
That metal is only reducing filter area space. So it's not as good as the others
@@kingj0n
And I doubt that it's any worse for having it.
Wow! one of the best most thorough reviews i have seen. Nice job!
I'm curious about the Fram synthetic, it looks good but the only way is a comparison between same car, same mileage, etc and then oil analysis. Can't always go off looks but if it's really synthetic it's pretty thick and looks good
Thanks for doing all the heavy lifting for us to compare these brands
Oil analysis is the only way to find out the best filter. If filter can last 13 months city driving and 8k miles, and having 4ppm metal wear numbers, it's the best filter.
Use a bypass filter
Ask the cab companies what oil and what filters they use and put a end to this. Once and for all. Shawn
This. Just looking at the design and saying one "looks cheap" or whatever compared to the other means nothing. You can say "oh this one uses rubber instead of silicone so it's a cheap POS" but it doesn't really mean anything because you shouldn't be using your filter long enough for the rubber to wear out anyways. And you'd have to test each filter on the same engine and have an oil analysis done to check all while using the same type of oil for so many miles. Honestly it's just very hard to quantify something like this.
@@Terminxman , actually oil filters with rubber o-ring at each end have less oil siping through unfiltered. I am talking about cartridge type filter and not a canister type.
@@shawnbeck2303 Already been done. Las Vegas cabs use Mobile 1 and Fram Ultra... They tore the engines down after 100k+ miles. You could put the parts in a new car.
As it's all about maintenance. Using the harsh environment tables. Supplied by Owners manual..
Great comparison, looks like I have been using the right filter, Mobil 1 extended. Thanks for all your time and expense to make the video.
I really liked this comparison. I've noticed a lot of people on RUclips have been bashing FRAM but they hardly ever review the synthetic media filters. I proudly use the synthetic oil filters and the quality is top notch. Thanks for not being biased and being honest about the comparison.
I just Subbed 😎
Thanks for watching and I appreciate your support.
FRAM tiers the filters terribly. The synthetic is the only one worth buying but there's hust as good for less with other brands. Anything else fram makes is junk.
@@humansvd3269 That is not true! I have been driving for 40 years. Never lost a engine to a Fram oil filter. Never! If you don't change your oil on the orange filter a 3,000 miles it's not the oil filters fault. That filter is for conventional oils at 3,000 miles oil changes. Look it up! Get the facts straight or get off this site.Shawn
@@humansvd3269 Actually the Fram Tough Guard series of filters is also a high end filter. They use the same filter media the Ultra Synthetic filters use. The difference is the Ultra Synthetic filter is a double lined filter element so it has extended life expectancy. The Tough Guard series is built more heavy duty and is a good 4X4 option. The TG filters are less expensive and work with both conventional and synthetic oil.
@@dannyo6699 Don't mean to burst your bubble , but the media in all the frams is paper ,except the Fram Ultra. It is a synthetic made media with wire screen in the middle of the media. And to the other guy who said rubber or silicone are the same is wrong. The silicone is less affected by heat and cold than rubber. So when you want the oil to stay in the filter because of the anti flow back silicone piece to avoid dry starts. It will do its job better than a rubber one. If they were the same in reliability , they would use the cheaper rubber piece in all the filters.
Good job , I,ve used fram for years , never an engine issue .
Great video , thanks for the info
Damn, that was some serious oil filter analysis. Thank you
2:53 it started !
Nice show actually , thanks for your explanations as you never really know what’s in the filters.
Awesome video. Although I noticed you mentioned full synthetic filters. Being a OCD freak about my suv. I found out full synthetic and 100% synthetic are two very different oils. Full synthetic is just regular motor oil that has been refined a little bit more. 100% synthetic is a man-made product.
Thanks for the info.
Thats not OCD. OCD is a DISORDER. You just care about your SUV.
There is a difference between full synthetic and 100% synthetic oil (in the USA) but there is no difference in oil filters. There is no such difference between 100% synthetic oil filters and full synthetic oil filters. There are conventional filters, synthetic filters and filters made with a blend of fibers (partially synthetic). Both synthetic and conventional material filters can be used with any kind of oil. (Contrary to what some believe.)
Thank you for putting your time and money doing this. Nice to see K&N I use them on my motorcycle for last 35 year's.🇨🇦
I appreciate the effort to make this comparison. It confirms my thoughts on oil filters somewhat. If I did 10,000 mile oil change intervals, I would use the Purolator Boss or Fram Ultra Synthetic oil filter. If I am doing 5,000 mile oil change intervals, I would use the Purolator ONE or Fram Tough Guard oil filters. The Wix XP would be an acceptable choice, too. Wix & Purolator are both owned my MANN + HUMMEL.
Great video. That’s about as detailed you can get without very expensive scientific research and machinery.
Thank you!
I thank you for the compliment.
That's a Bosch Workshop filter. The Premium ones (what you typically see at your local stores) are better built and have a Silicone anti-drainback valve, coil spring, nitrile gasket, better media, etc
The Bosch filter that was "tested" was the cheapest grade of filter that Bosch makes. There is also the Bosch Premium Oil Filter and the extended-life version, neither of which were included in the "test".
Also, a fair test of oil filters can only be done if ALL of the filters tested are for THE SAME ENGINE, due to size, type of drainback valve, and dirt-holding capacity.
Kudos for your hard work and attention to detail -- it was a much better and more informative "test" than others at U-Tube.
Already seen multi videos like this but it's always good to see more reviews about products.
Good job my man. Thank you for all the info you have given us about one of the things we use basically everyday.
Very good video! Thank you for all the effort. The visual aid on how much filter media per filter was perfect. I got a good comparison, I just wish you could have maybe gave a square inches per, but the side by side was almost as good.
Comparing square inches of media isn't effective by itself because some media is thicker than other media and the material isn't all the same. You would need to put each one through a filtration testing system to tell the difference.
Super cool video, man! I especially liked your direct comparison between the conventional and synthetic filters because I haven't seen anyone else explain the differences so clearly. Your channel is really cool, and I can see how much work you put into this video.
Great job, very informative. By the way I always use NAPA GOLD filters made by WIX
Thank you very much sir for spending your money and precious time to help us understand most of the brands that on the market. After watching your video I've found that the ones that cost the most are the ones with high quality and I think from now on I would prefer the FRAM ULTRA FILTER with 20,000 miles protection.
Good video, it looks like it was a lot of work. Thank you.
Thanks for watching and it was but it was also fun to do.
Great job !!! Appreciate your time and effort to give a very comprehensive review of the filter that are available. Thank you !
I am a Chemical Engineer-- Synthetic is OIL PERIOD, It is more refined and processed.
Synthetic oil technological advantages include:
Uniform molecular size means less friction
Refinement and engineering reduce deposits
Additives boost protection and can clean engines
Better function in cold and extreme weather
Cleaner oil with fewer impurities
When Mobil 1 first came out back in the 70's their oil was the only "True 100% Synthetic" product available, it was completely man made at that time, and the only other maker to make a "True 100% Synthetic" oil is Amsoil, if you can afford it and find it.
Mobil 1 ultimately did change their product to a better manufactured and quality dyno oil as their synthetic oil, but it's still a very good product. I use it almost exclusively in my vehicles, and if a customer asks what I'd recommend, I usually lean towards Mobil 1 as a recommendation.
Everything you said about Synthetic oil is 100% right on the mark. Thank you.
