Your video is exactly what I was looking for. About to build a Pergola and wasn't sure how to put in knee braces. And also how to fasten two boards at the top of 6x6s . But your video just fixed that problem. Thanks!
Arthur Burke here, from watching the Metal Garage when you fired the first string of metal worker’s. Did you ever get that straightened out ??? I see you 👀 at it again, hell man you just don’t stop 🛑. Love ❤️ what your doing with the outback space you have, nexts week I wouldn’t be surprised to see you building a race track with horses 🐎 🐎🐎running around the new in the beginning of the new Video coming out.
Hey Arthur thank you for the support. Yes we ended up kinda meeting in the middle on the building so we kinda got it worked out. Thanks for checking. Haha a race track sounds fun actually.
The only advantage to the carriage bolts over the structural torx screws is cosmetic. A pergola isn't heavy enough to matter, which is why the side attached to the house can hang on nails.
Awesome job. It looks great. How long did you make the knee braces? Is there a rule of thumb or did you just pick any length? Thanks so much and keep up the good work.
Hey, I noticed the main beam is being supported onto the post by carriage bolts an not directly on top of the posts. With your experience doing this which option would you prefer?
If you don't have time to notch but are putting a roof on and need extra support Simpson makes the APDJT2-4 for solid joists and APDJT2-6 combined with a APVST flat strap for splices. This is easier, stronger and looks better than through bolting but is significantly more expensive. I would add another lag screw above the APDJT2-4 with a APVDW washer but I am a belt and suspenders kinda guy.
Final stage completed for the backyard transformation! video is live

WOOD PERGOLA KNEE BRACE

With a pergola directly bolting is fine. If this was a deck joist system 100% notch your support post with a saddle and bolt. Thanks for watching

Guess we’re call ☎️ it the Project Dad Race Track / P D L Racing.
Haha yes!🙌🏻
Not timber frame. Timber frame incorporates mortise and tenon jounery with 3/4' dowels pinning them into place.
Yes sir
How long are your knee braces
