If you feel like you want more shade, we added a custom sized shade cloth from Alion home (I'm sure there are other options). It made a huge difference and next step is a wet rated fan. Our area has no natural shade, so some extra relief was needed.

For one of my first ever projects I built outdoor benches using 8" structural screws. Every time I went to Home Depot I knew I was spending way too much. LOL
Now I would use a forstner bit to drill into my 4x4's such that I could use a regular 3" woodscrew. I spent 5x more on those benches than I would if I built them today but the lessons learned were priceless.

For anyone interested in WATERPROOFING, their new Canopy? You can do it yourself, and save BIG $$$ !!
I went over to my local Walmart, and in the Outdoors/Camping equipment section, they sell a product called 'Atsko, Silicon WaterGuard" in a spray can, for around $5.00 each.
I purchased a few of the 13oz. cans, which was more than enough for my 10x10 Pergola Canopy, applied 2 coats to the top and beneath the canopy, allowing each coat to DRY THROUGHLY BEFORE APPLYING THE SECOND COAT, about (30 minutes) depending on the temperature, and it's definitely solved the rain issue!... it's also color safe on fabrics, I just recommend using a cheap, disposable mask while applying. Have Fun😊

They didn't use it but simpson tie has a whole kit with plans that uses the timber screws and washers with ties for all the joints. Looks pretty cool. I had thought about that for my yard.

Before I started your video I had to say. I have had the pleasure to build one of these at a house I worked on. I am hoping yours wasn't so time consuming. Lol we had to epoxy close bunch huge cracks in some 100 year old barnwood.

Are you guys planning on shade cloth or uv sheets for the top? Or just leaving it open??
Looks super good guys, however you need to put a knee brace on the other direction as well to keep it squarely:)
There’s nothing to tie that brace to.
It doesn’t have to be as big as the main ones, a flat piece from the post to the last top lattice or previous one I believe would work, I’m no engineer nor a construction specialist but I built quite a bit in the past 30 year of being a homeowner:) a other way would be to screw from one post to the other to give you something to screw the knee brace
Also from a bad past experience, the top of the large posts, even with sealant will eventually soak water and get damaged, it’s better to cap them witch brings me back to the kind of cross-top bar from one poste to the other, not to ruin the looks, you could sandwich 3 lattices to cover the top of the post and keep your overall look and height as well, just another suggestion, I love the look of the whole project

Using the screws At the bottom, if you put 2 on each side and the holes line up perfectly from one side and the other side of the 6x6s, wouldn’t the screws run into each other?
