I enjoy OGD 114 and I'm going to leave it on the shelf until I want one. If by some rare chance it's not there, Benchmark Full Proof is.
My wife was asking me just the other day why there was 3 bottles of Old Grand Dad 114 sitting on the floor in the back room when she could clearly see an open bottle (1/2) sitting with the rest of my collection (at least 45 bottles) of bourbons and I told her because I haven't had a chance to get the 4th bottle yet! A cask strength bourbon for $28.99 (and that's a $2 increase from a month ago) You gatta be kidding me! and it taste incredible to boot! drinking an old fashioned with it right now! Old Grand Dad 114 "proof" has to be at least $20 cheaper if not more than any other cask strength bourbon? 🥃Cheers!
When I first got into bourbon a number of years ago, when I was young and dumb in my bourbon journey, a friend gave me a bottle of Old Grandad 114. It was an old bottle, from the 80's, and me not knowing anything... I used it to cook with. 🙃 Knowing what I know now, I was an idiot!!!🤯

OGD 114 has always been a bottle I’ve wanted to try but never bought because I always see it in my small town. Even during rumors way back through the years it sits. But now I’m gonna make it my next purchase and if I do like it I will bunker one or two. Other than that I do plan on buying a glass! I recently had a pour at nice bar in the city not to far and they had glasses similar to yours. It did to me make a very big difference in the nose and I really appreciated that more! So can’t wait! It’s really findable in my area for about $25. Over a year ago it was hard to come by for $29. It’s a really good pour for what it is but wouldn’t be mad if they repackaged it with a little more age to it. I’ve read that Old Grandad used to be a premium bottle that Jim Beam turned into a bottom shelfer. Same goes for Old Overholdt, which they’re trying to bring back its roots.
Well, Jim Beam has been doing this for years. I remember seeing the regular Jim Beam with an 8 year age statement, then that went away. A few years later, Jim Beam came out with Black Label, age stated at 8 years, then a couple years of that, and it became, "Extra Aged." Then just recently they came out with the Black, with a 7 year age statement, it is definitely all marketing strategies.
I have had several bottles of OGD 114. I am not a fan of high rye Bourbons, but when I drink this one I will usally add 1 small cube. It has been a few years since I have been to the Jim Beam distillery. Need to go again.
market for barrels is dry. i doubt they could sell to a third part for more at this moment. they have saturated the budget market with 3 cheap products. they might pull it and update the product though.

Benchmark Full Proof is the only other $20ish whiskey I know of in that proof range that is readily available. Everything else I can think off is $40 and up.
I have seen that Jim Beam mixes their 80 and 114 proof Old Grand-Dad to make 100 proof Old Grand-Dad. They prefer you buy the more expensive Basil Hayden with fancy copper and aluminum on the bottle. Or their much more expensive Hardin's Creek bourbon. I prefer the 100 proof Old Grand-Dad over both the 80 and 114 proof versions. Or 100 proof Early Times, or 90 proof Bernheim Original Wheat Whiskey from 2 other companies in KY.
I was at Total Wine in North Miami yesterday. An associate confirmed that they ran out of it last week and will not be restocking. By the way, OGD BIB bumped from $25 to $32.

I think companies should promote Tequila, Rum, Vodka and Gin and make them popular again to get the RiffRaff out of the bourbon market. These days everybody wants to buy bourbon and those other spirits just set on the shelf. I never see empty spots on the Tequila or Rum shelves.
My guess is they are using the 114 as a “loss leader” They make up for the low price of this by diluting the same whiskey down to 80 proof and selling it under the Basil Hayden brand, maybe.
Don't think it will be discontinued but is it does, that's cool with me. Pretty harsh/nasty to me. All I get is black pepper, leather, and ethanol on the palate.
I have one back up because we saw it on sale. I don't drink mixed, and the OGD-BIB is a better sipper to me as well as their Double Oak and Extra Aged, IMO.
I cant get ogd 114 here in MA, I can get the bonded though. I was in Maine recently and there was a store i popped in that had 114 for about $35. Bonded is about $30 a liter in MA. The 114 hasnt really had time to open up, but it really didnt seem all that much better than the bonded...for me anyways. But, will see what happens when it has a chance to open up. If it does get disconnected, it wouldnt really matter to me because there's still the bonded, it doesnt seem all that much better/different to me, and i dont really purchase bottles in that low budget price range. But at least i got to try it. Even if it doesnt get disconnected and i come across it again somewhere, i probably wouldnt buy it anyways. But im happy i got a bottle, even if it was marked up an extra $10.
I remember in 2009 people talking about OGD being discontinued. I used to drink Weller by the half gallon and never horded it. I did however horde a case of OGD that's worth what I paid for it then. While the Weller would be worth thousands now. 😅
I hope they keep it - that's good bourbon and doesn't cost much. Something that's part of your exposition, though you've not said explicitly (yet, anyway), is that a whisky company is a *business.* However much we may dislike the decisions a distillery makes, they're making business decisions, and if they ever cease to run the business like a business they'll be out of business. That's a point that we on the customer's side need to remember, so thanks for reminding us.
Yup. I was thinking the same thing. Get a couple bottles in case but not too many in case rumors aren’t true. Though people would go over to the bottled in bond, I still think people would be up in arms if OGD 114 gets discontinued

Especially with the announcement of Bakers 7 coming with a high rye version...don't know what that proof point will be...but that could be the replacement at a 60-70 dollar price tag.

Found OGD 114 for 19.99 at a store in Wisconsin last year and bought 5 bottles. I am retiring next year, so should be good and not have to buy any more. 🥃
This is less likely to happen than Sazerac lowering prices and bringing everything off of allocation status. I think Beam-Suntory is so huge that they don’t mind using OGD 114 as a loss leader. And I think they could make this infinitely, being only about 5 years old. Whiskey rumors are awesome.
The rebranding of Baker's as an ultra premium and the announcement that they are going to release a baker's high rye makes it more likely this time the rumor is true. The liquid for that new line has to come from somewhere.
OGD 114 is $33 in the NY area. The cheapest I've ever seen it is $30. The bonded is between $25 and $27. Wild Turkey 101, Old Forester 100, and even Jack Daniels No.7 are all around the same price as the OGD 114. There is clearly some play in pricing in different parts of the country.
You shouldn't be reporting information that you haven't confirmed. You called out 13th Colony for not being honest with their double oaked product. You have to hold yourself to the same standards that you hold others to. I've lost all respect for you because of this.
I explain in the video that it isn't possible to verify this information because the companies think that disclosing is bad for the company. The piece was mostly about economics in whiskey and not as much about wether this instance is the actual instance this change is happening, but I respect your decision.

It is likely that someone overbought on the rumor and is not trying to get their capital out of the inventory at cost.
OGD 114 in Ohio which is a state controlled price is closer to $30+
Same in Florida - $32 at major chain retailers
How’s that compare to Overholt 114? Ohio’s one of only a few states that gets that bottle

I've also noticed Beam has been putting more age statements on their bottles. Knob Creek 7 and 10 year, Jim Beam Black 7, etc

MGP's Remus Highest Rye is 49 % rye (split between rye and malted rye, I believe). New Riff uses 30 % rye in their standard offering, as well.

8 year age statement at 114 proof would really hurt the sales of knob creek 9 year 120 proof at 80 bucks

I have a soft spot for this Whiskey, it ws my first taste of heavy proof bourbon with definable character.
Give it 2 years off the market and it will return as OGD 114 7-year and go for $45

Especially with the announcement of Bakers 7 coming with a high rye version...don't know what that proof point will be...but that could be the replacement at a 60-70 dollar price tag.

I wanted to comment because I also lost a brother to suicide and it’s not a community that anyone is “proud” of. But I’m glad this hobby/community has accidentally connected me to your videos. Was at my local today and there we two distributors there. One said they were going to discontinue it and shift production to Early Times BIB.

Found OGD 114 for 19.99 at a store in Wisconsin last year and bought 5 bottles. I am retiring next year, so should be good and not have to buy any more. 🥃

This is less likely to happen than Sazerac lowering prices and bringing everything off of allocation status. I think Beam-Suntory is so huge that they don’t mind using OGD 114 as a loss leader. And I think they could make this infinitely, being only about 5 years old. Whiskey rumors are awesome.
The rebranding of Baker's as an ultra premium and the announcement that they are going to release a baker's high rye makes it more likely this time the rumor is true. The liquid for that new line has to come from somewhere.
Where I work we haven't been able to get any in 2 years, so we won't be affected.
OGD 114 is $33 in the NY area. The cheapest I've ever seen it is $30. The bonded is between $25 and $27. Wild Turkey 101, Old Forester 100, and even Jack Daniels No.7 are all around the same price as the OGD 114. There is clearly some play in pricing in different parts of the country.

You shouldn't be reporting information that you haven't confirmed. You called out 13th Colony for not being honest with their double oaked product. You have to hold yourself to the same standards that you hold others to. I've lost all respect for you because of this.
I explain in the video that it isn't possible to verify this information because the companies think that disclosing is bad for the company. The piece was mostly about economics in whiskey and not as much about wether this instance is the actual instance this change is happening, but I respect your decision.

In controlled states ogd 114 is closer the $30 and BiB is $21ish
