I love Asian cities! Always so full of life....so much stimulus...so many things going on. Thanks for filming the parts of cities, that so few people forget to record.
I did notice a lot of hate in the comments. To be noted - the area of the city where Kees has been roaming around is the archaic old and unplanned part of the town. Kolkata had three districts back during the British raj - a) The White Town - The erstwhile British bastion - Included the Maidan, Chowringhee, Esplanade and the so called adjoining areas. Still green and pretty clean. b) The old black town - Mostly the outskirts of the white town. Grew chaotically as Kolkata grew in prominence. This is the majority of the region where the walk has been centered around. The is is the true Kolkata - hot humid and filthy. Yet economically, the most robust. Most small scale businesses are still situated here. The city took in millions of refugees from Bangladesh after the 1971 Bangladeshi war, the Noakhali riots and neighboring states of Bihar, Jharkhand and Orissa. Most people were as poor as anyone could think of - Kolkata opened her arms for the ailing ! c) The Zamindari North Kolkata : The rich and highly born noble Indians lived in their magnificent bunglows here. Now in a present state of dismay and dilapidation. Yet, culturally the strongest hub of Kolkata with areas like College Street ! Later parts of Kolkata included areas beyond Bhawanipore - mostly in the 1950s. Today's South Kolkata - most people here are rich and educated and is a cleaner and a developed area. But, what fun is it to roam around a city that has only residential areas ? Why would I as a traveller from a different culture go to experience residential buildings ?? The Newer Kolkata - North eastern fringes - Probably the best part of Kolkata. Clean, wide roads, fancy tall skyscrapers - Salt Lake is a posh neighborhood with elegant villas and rich people. New Town is a swanky place with multi-story buildings and expressways. In all - Kolkata has it all. Kees as a traveller, showed you the parts she/he (sorry, I do not know your gender !) found the most fascinating. If people want to see better and unsurreal places where the common average Kolkattan lives - go for videos like Kolkata Skyline and stuff if you want to see the developed side of India. And many people are talking about women not on streets. The part of Kolkata showed by Kees, is again a part that hosts raw businesses, small scale business, hard labor and the manufacturing and wholesale dens of Kolkata. Kolkata, in fact is one of the safest cities in India. If you were short dresses in Delhi - you might be ogled at lecherously - In kolkata people are way more cool with stuff. You might definitely get a stare, yet no one will lecherously stare at you or give you judgemental looks ! For a city with a population of 15 million including its suburbs - Kolkata has to offer a lot !
"The Newer Kolkata - North eastern fringes - Probably the best part of Kolkata. Clean, wide roads, fancy tall skyscrapers." I don't want to fly halfway around the planet to see fancy skyscrapers; we have those here in America. I'll be in Calcutta for Christmas and New Year's.
I bet Calcutta could be 1 trillion dollar economy. Thank you for showing the historic Calcutta, we live in Punjab Pakistan thousands miles away enjoying the hussle bussle of this very busy city

Amazing footage of Calcutta, my birthplace. It's the next best thing to actually being there. This video means so much to me as I left Cal over 40 years ago. However, the fond memories still linger in my heart and mind. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart. On another note, I was quite impressed by the clarity and excellent image stabilization of your camera. If you don't mind, would you please name the make and model of the video equipment used. Thanks again for doing such a fine job.

India doesn't care what you think, It has the 7th biggest economy in the world and can venture into anything it likes. The matter is that the people who run India don't give a fuck about its own individuals.
To think that this country has a nuclear weapons program. Just like North Korea where people starve while they build nukes. My dad used to say something like there's never money for butter but always money for guns.
India's space program earns money, used for extreme weather predictions etc. Nuclear program wasfir defence and eliminated India Pakistan wars, which were regular before nuclear weapons. Your sir is a simplistic comment, you should learn more about the world.
very passionate about this film, despite the noise on the streets, the lack of organization in traffic, even so, I have the great dream of visiting India fascinates me the culture of this place, I live in Brazil and I love Indian culture Congratulations to you who recorded the video. Thanks
Unlike most places every frame of this video tells a story. Thanks for the upload and the hard work. Kolkata is a place to visit and to the western eyes it might be overwhelming and yet if you go there it will grow on you.
+faisalch It is not the westerners , people live in Chennai or Bangalore have the same opinion. the most dirtiest city on earth. I would rather take shower with bleach everyday.
If Indian cities didn't have the car horns, they'd be far more amazing. I like the chaos, but the horns really detract from everything. Plus, noise pollution is proven to have disastrous effects on mental health.
Keez starts to walk on the side of a street, then goes into a side street, then turns and goes into a tinier side street of a side street which becomes darker and narrows even further. Then the tiny walkway seamlessly merges into people's homes until Keez realised he has entered someone's living room and hurriedly walks back. 😁

I'm from Bombay and settled in the U.S. about a quarter century ago. This New Year's eve I was in Bombay and we decided to take a trip to Kolkata, which has been described as a filthy city, dying city and all of that in our media. But as far as my history knowledge goes, Cal was the political, cultural, spiritual and scientific capital of India. All of our literary and scientific giants were from Bengal (East and West). Our trip to Cal was a shocking experience because reality was quite the opposite from what we had imagined. Kolkata is beautiful, clean, beautiful promenades and vast open grounds for the public. Traffic was much smoother with no traffic jams compared to Bombay. Very little garbage strewn on the street, no building debris, Lots of cleanliness that we in Bombay are not used to. Bombay is a big garbage dump so readers please don't believe anybody that tells you that it's a lie. Other than around Park Street where we stayed at the Oberoi Grand Hotel, we took cab rides to Howrah, Hoogly, Alipore, Salt Lake. All these neighborhoods were so well maintained, inhabited by decent neighbors. I'm thinking of relocating to Kolkata because BOMBAY is the most filthy and unlivable city in India. Even the people of Kolkata were so helpful and courteous and disciplined. Bombay is the dead city...or rather the fastest dying city in India. Jackson, Mississippi.
perikaveera . you are right. my recent experience was the city is much better than mumbai. especially the roads. while tge flyivers in mumbai are an eyesore, in incomplete cindition, roads and flyoivers that i saw were well lighted and maintained. peoole of course are a friendlier lot.

I've been to Kolkata five times, starting in 1980. last time about 2008. I just love it! I always stayed a sudder- or lindsey street (where the film starts) - new market area. low budget: salvation army red shield house (sudder street - now demolished; 1980); high end: Oberoi (1986). never met better educated and more friendly people in India - especially in college street. I still correspond with a dear friend from the 'city of joy' (Malay Kumar of Sunderbans). the walk takes me back many years ...
A filmagem ficou sensacional, parece que você está no meio deles... incrível, muito bem feito esse vídeo!!! Parece um pouco a nossa 25 de Março aqui em São Paulo Brasil!!!😜
What an amazing walk! Most of us would never get the chance to do this....I feel like I have been walking with you. There is so much to see and take in! Thank you!
OMG , hectic , inexplicable , like a dream , but really fascinating , and the people seemed very nice , I have seen scenes like this , but never this nonstop of all things mixed ..., would love to go there to experience it once in a life time !
Kolkata has opened arms to millions of refugees coming in from backgrounds way more improvished than in this video. Kolkata is overpopulated because it sheltered millions of refugees from Bangladesh and also immigrants from neighboring states of Bihar, Jharkhand and Orissa. There are many parts of the city that open up the front of the new developing India. Sadly, with 90% India's money being held only in the hands of the 10% of the population - it is indeed depressing.
@srijit ,absoultelt true ,it is not Calcuttans who are poor , it is immigrants free flow from Bihar ,Bangladesh AND oRIISA.bUT CM has to something to stop this

I'll be visiting Kolkata in January. Do you remember what the name of the area in the final half of this was? The really crowded narrow lanes? Thanks, I love this video and your other India ones!
That's really funny because i hear that a lot but in the video, i honestly don't see much garbage anywhere. Maybe some walls blackened by the pollution but nothing too alarming. Same thing for the "malnourished" i didn't see anybody who seemed to be starving like if you were in an african village. And for poverty, well i can't really see it on the video (most were wearing clean clothes) but i guess it's not that easy to detect.
If I go their as a turist and I'm 18 Years old and cute wit lots of money and as nice as I am ?? Do u think I could find a cute boyfriend my age and bring him back to America and marry him and he'd be my husband . ?? I know lots of guys be holding hands walking down the street and people don't seem to mind it . I'd treat him good and help him Thu school or college and if he wants to be wit a girl to have kids I'm OK wit it as long as he still my husband ??

If they fix a lot of their buildings and keep their streets cleaner it would be a great place to visit and those food benders would wash their hands mire when fixing people's food after teaching raw meats so others don't get sick . But some of those Indian dudes are really cute a lil skinny but OMG they have some handsome guys tho .

I did notice a lot of hate in the comments. To be noted - the area of the city where Kees has been roaming around is the archaic old and unplanned part of the town. Kolkata had three districts back during the British raj -
a) The White Town - The erstwhile British bastion - Included the Maidan, Chowringhee, Esplanade and the so called adjoining areas.

By the way, since Canon has several models, what's the model number? Thanks.

I think India should fix their public infrastructures first before venturing into space programs.
WHY FIX ANYTHING WHEN YOU HAVE THE SMARTS TO MOVE YOUR. ENTIRE CIVILIZATION TO ANOTHER GALAXY !!!!!......

If Indian cities didn't have the car horns, they'd be far more amazing. I like the chaos, but the horns really detract from everything. Plus, noise pollution is proven to have disastrous effects on mental health.
+JaiSriLaxmi it is pointless anyway if everybody use them all the time
kees Colijn
They don't have to use them, though. People just have the habit, and habits change.
+kees Colijn Indian cities aren't the only ones. Cairo is (or was) horrible when I was there. Athens is very bad, etc. etc.

What about your Times Square NYC?
Keez starts to walk on the side of a street, then goes into a side street, then turns and goes into a tinier side street of a side street which becomes darker and narrows even further. Then the tiny walkway seamlessly merges into people's homes until Keez realised he has entered someone's living room and hurriedly walks back. 😁

Thanks for lovely video. It enables us to see common man and daily life in historical city of Kolkata .we Pakistani still say it Calcutta
Bengali pronounciation put more emphasis on 'oo', so the name changed. Hindi/Urdu/English is pronounced with 'aa'.
Thank you for sparing me from travelling India.
From Dhaka, we went to kolkata in train . I was in Kolkata for 3 days as a 7 yr old in 1960. I saw Mughl e Azam and barsat ki raat movies and we took the train to peshawar pakistan , through wagah border ... cant forget that journey.
I'm from Bombay and settled in the U.S. about a quarter century ago.
This New Year's eve I was in Bombay and we decided to take a trip to
Kolkata, which has been described as a filthy city, dying city and all
of that in our media. But as far as my history knowledge goes, Cal was
the political, cultural, spiritual and scientific capital of India. All
of our literary and scientific giants were from Bengal (East and West).
Our trip to Cal was a shocking experience because reality was quite the
opposite from what we had imagined.
Kolkata is beautiful, clean, beautiful promenades and vast open grounds
for the public. Traffic was much smoother with no traffic jams compared
to Bombay. Very little garbage strewn on the street, no building debris,
Lots of cleanliness that we in Bombay are not used to. Bombay is a big
garbage dump so readers please don't believe anybody that tells you that
it's a lie. Other than around Park Street where we stayed at the Oberoi
Grand Hotel, we took cab rides to Howrah, Hoogly, Alipore, Salt Lake.
All these neighborhoods were so well maintained, inhabited by decent
neighbors. I'm thinking of relocating to Kolkata because BOMBAY is the
most filthy and unlivable city in India. Even the people of Kolkata were
so helpful and courteous and disciplined. Bombay is the dead city...or
rather the fastest dying city in India.
Mumbai and Kolkata almost gives the same vibe. Both cities created by British by incorporating local villages around port
nobody appears to smoke cigarettes in any of the indian videos...interesting
+Patrick Storey I saw one guy, but I was surprised by that also
+Patrick Storey Indians usually smoke sitting or standing rather than walking. I see more cigarette smokers down south in Hyderabad.
That's because smoking in public places is banned in India.

+Hoohoopot Ahrebus He's right, according to wiki, there's been a nationwide public smoking ban in India since 2008. You will be fined, but only 200 rupees lol

I've never been to Calcutta (now Kolkatta) so far. Whats this area known as? Why all Ambassador cabs? Even Mumbai has changed to newer Cars.
Discover just now your walking video. Its fabulous. Love it.

Religion is the opium of the people, and their oppressor keeps them in misery, dirty and ignorance.
Fascinating, but also very depressing.
@srijit ,absoultelt true ,it is not Calcuttans who are poor , it is immigrants free flow from Bihar ,Bangladesh AND oRIISA.bUT CM has to something to stop this
Dont be depressed, this people are maybe happier than you or me.
Yes depressing for most of Western people or people living in developed countries but for most of the people living on earth it's still enjoyable

How much of this yellow green three wheel taxies do you find in Kolkata?
The city is dirty , lots of poverty and malnourished people, highly populated . But at the end of the day it's my city. My Kolkata. My home
