Thanks for the great review. I too thought it would be a little bigger than it is. While the Edgewood package may be right for many, I didn't want the logging tray, dubious paddle, battery, or charger. I designed my own resistive pressure paddle, log using a phone or audio recorder, and want a much smaller/lighter battery in the tray. I ordered just the rig and ATU. I also added a USB-C port and separate battery charging circuit for easy charging. That said, the tray is much easier to open on this radio than on the KX2. While many will like operating with the little whip, the ATU works well with "random" wires. I found the tuner seems to work best with a 4:1 unun and wire lengths that are 2:1 ratios (i.e. 15 ft radiator and 7.5 ft counterpoise tunes well on all 5 bands). You can also go with longer wire lengths for better performance. Just test before cutting to find the right lengths that will work for your bands of interest. Have fun with the rig!

@@houseofhamradio thanks! The paddle works well for some, and not for others. It's picky about where you contact the resistive pad. It's not sensitive near the edges, so if your fingers drift away from the center, you miss key. Because of that quirk, some really like it and others don't.
Thanks for the pencil link. 0.5 mm 2B lead is my preference for field logging so that will be perfect. Regarding the counterpoise, having done pedestrian mobile for over 20 years I'm well aware of the importance. And yet, the first time I excitedly walked out into the yard with my KX2, my first thought was, wow, this receiver is weak. Then I realized that the preamp was off. I turned it on but still wasn't impressed. Then I looked down and realized that the counterpoise was still coiled up in my hand and not connected to the rig. I attached it and tossed it out on the ground and wow what a difference! 😛

Charged the battery, went through the manual (for the third time), walked into the yard, called the first station I heard on 20 meters, and worked a park in Arizona (from Illinois). I ordered the Zebra pencil that you recommended, loaded up my favorite 2B lead, and just love it. Thanks again for the tip.

It does. I was using the pencil in the video and it was in the holder before (and after) the activation. It is in there as I write this. I have yet to use the pen but will probably give that a go to see if I like it.
It would be great when you do the full review to address the need for a low profile right angle adapter in order to use earbuds and not have them interfere with the lighting tray. If you find any that work that would be good for folks to know. So far I have found the Apple earbuds will not work. The SONY seem to be ok. Still searching for other options. Just fyi.
The Sony ear buds work great with the tray since the plug is a right angle. For the video, I needed to add a Y adapter to use my audio recorder. I used a right angle adapter I got off of Amazon. I added the link to the video description since it won't let me put it in the comment.

Yup, the manual states that without the counterpoise, you are losing about 30dB so yes very important.
