Chelegance MC750 - Portable HF Antenna Review
I passed both of my exams online and I plan to study for my extra. It is very convenient and no distractions or interruptions. Nothing against the local chapter but I went for my general in person. I arrived early and well prepared. It was chaos. They were disorganized lots of applicants and was in an open Public library (kids running around, etc.). Not what I expected. I left and signed up for an online exam that Sunday evening online and passed. Had my upgrade in a few days. My two experiences taking the exam online has been fantastic. I hope this option remains available.
Fortunately, I don't thing the online ability is going anywhere. I actually see it as becoming the standard (if it hasn't already) and the in-person will be the exception.
So when I try to hit the re Peter button, it tells me I have to log in. So when I go back to log in and I have to register And I put in my phone number and I hit verification code, get cold and it makes me do the little puzzle thing, but I never receive a code, a verification code to my phone. Am I doing something wrong
Not really sure. It is not something I use often and I know there are some quirks with it but that is not something I have experienced.
They cost more than I am willing to spend. I can put up with the inconvenience of the Nano VNA or others.
It is great to have choices. It wasn't always like this. You have to do what is right for you.
I really really wish we hv these same Online Conveniences here in the Philippines, here in the Philippines things are still being done as if it is Stil the 1950s, the 1970s & the 1980s pre internet era. On top of that you HAVE to GO through a Gauntlet of Hurdles of Bureaucratic Requirements of CONVERTING one permit INTO another permit into Another permit so on & So forth, Not just the amateur written exam. Plus the attitude is that the amateur radio Hobby is ONLY & SOLELY for the Rich, tvhe Can Affords & the Vry AFFLUENT & Well CONNECTED with entities so vry influencial with Lots of Connections TO Pull STRINGS For You. Unlike in the US that once you've got your US license, that US license vry much COVERS everything. No need for permit to purchase, permit To posses, permit To assemble a station and permit to SO ON AND SO FORTH before one Can finally Go on the Air in the Philippines. So in the Philippines if you are just an Ordinary Kid interested in electronics & HF radio experimenting THEN you are in a Tough Luck, you have TO GET WEALTHY & VRY POLITICALLY INFLUENCIAL FIRST b4 U can get into the ham radio hobby. In the philippines YOU HAVE TO BE PHYSICALKY IN THE FLESH IN THE NTC OFFICE TO APPLY. If You are a Vision Impaired handicap like me, they don't give Damn about your situation. I have been a General class licensed amateur radio operator since Aug 1984, when i First applied for & taken the written exam ii accomplished ALL in just Half a Day & within 4 days i got my ham license in the mail & by 1600 Hours i bought my HF gear & Honebrew my Antenna and was ON THE AIR without the bureaucracy & Hurdles of Permit this & permit that & so forth & was able to work my first DX station on CW... a Japsnese station all from my qth in California.
I am studying for my Tech right now. I can't drive due to medical (epilepsy), so being able to take the test online is important to me. I will have to check you guys out. I have my GMRS license already but I want to get into HAM as well.
Online testing has really made the exam much more accessible to many people. Glad it will allow you to get your license and join the community.
I recently woke up one morning and decided to go for my General. I browsed through the options on HamStudy, chose Stephen's team, and had my upgraded license within 24 hours. I even did it on my android phone. I highly recommend the team.
Stephen and the WM7X Team were very nice people. Their online exam was a good experience and looking forward to taking my General with them hopefully this weekend. Thanks again to WM7X team for the warm welcome. It's much appreciated.
It is a great team which is why I am willing to help them out when I can. Don't spend as much time as I would like to but that is life.
@@houseofhamradio Yes they are! I just move up to HF through them. Looking forward to the amateur Extra Class!
The A/B with the Sure mic was a nice touch. And I have the same problem with my XYL 🤣
Thanks, I was really surprised at how close the two mics were. Can't seem to get her interested in CW. Go figure.
Just did an early morning in Buckeyestan POTA sitting on a rock with the KH1. Between trying to keep track of my paperwork & the radio & getting chilled pretty good, it was painful. Got two Qs before getting back in the car and using the X5105 on 10m instead. If I'd had the use of the KH1 logging app, well, obviously that would have been one less thing to chill out about ;-) Now all I need is to find my KH1 interface cable & get that all organized so the next time I can do it all and let the radio log the Qs. Thanks for this video. Gonna save me plenty of frozen fingers for sure. 73 de W8IJN
I am a pretty fair weather op. I probably would have sat in the car to begin with. Kudos for toughing it out even if for only a short while.
Thank you for your video I just pass the thecnitian license and you guys was alsome very informative and easy to follow instructions and you guys have patience to explain everything thank you again for this opportunity
Congrats on new license and welcome to the Ham Radio community.
i dont want to be a ham. i want a radio where i could scan the ham frequencies without having to learn much. i want to push a button and have the radio find any ham broadcasts going on so i can listen. do you know of a very simple to operate radio for this task?
You might be best off with a scanner. Unfortunately, there isn't really anything where you can just push a button and find any ham conversations ( we aren't allowed to broadcast). That being said, you don't need to know a lot but you need to know where the ham bands are so you can program a scanner/receiver to listen to those frequencies. Best of luck.
@@houseofhamradio appreciate it
This is youtube not podcast bro Thanks
Not sure what you mean by that but you are entitled to your opinion.
@ i mean youtube is for videos not talk Time is money Bro Wellcome Any new entitlment
I have them both, and I’m very satisfied. Fortunately I live near a fantastic repeater, and am able to talk for hundreds of miles, on GMRS. I can’t wait to use them when I get my Technician’s license !
That’s great to hear!
Good video🇺🇸
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
Thank you for the video, it was informative!
Glad to help, good luck with your test.
I need a photo ID to take a ham test but don't need one to vote in some States? Imagine that.😊
I'm all for requiring photo ID for both situations.
I have been a ham since 1991 and most people who ask me how do I get the license, and when I tell them they lose all interest..reason the online testing is ridiculous with all the hoops you need to jump through they tell me and the rest don't seem interested in going out at night 10 or 20 miles away to take the test.
It sounds to me like they really don't want to be a ham. There are those that think it should just be given to them and not have to put forth any effort. The online testing has become pretty easy and although there are those teams that are very strict with unrealistic requirements, there are plenty that require just enough to ensure test integrity.
Are you able to take more than one exam at a time or do you have to do them separately? I know I person you can do more than one. Thanks!
Yes, you can take all three so long as you pass each of the prior. You also only pay one testing fee.
@ Awesome! I’m debating on doing just Technician and General or going for all 3. Hmm. Any suggestion there?
Only attempt as far as you have studied for. The Extra exam is not one you can pass on luck. I would go for Tech and General for the first session and that will give you all of the ham bands. Extra gives you a little "extra" coverage of most of the HF bands but that is about it.
@ Oh, definitely. I would study first. Just trying to determine if I should prepare for all 3 up front. I guess I can gauge it based on how well I’m picking up the info. Honestly, I think my main motivation would be to get a 1x2 or 2x1 call sign. Probably a silly reason.
Well said, I just registered and downloaded the app. I can’t imagine doing it any other way. I plan on joining a local club if one’s available too. Thank you for the informative video.
Best of luck.
Steve and his team are totally awesome, I upgraded to extra at Quartzfest last January AI7VS Dave, the process was a breeze, the only thing I suggest is study, study, study, like all things in life you need to be prepared, great video.
This is my test group I'm a VE with them. I just passed my exam with them as well. I have done all 3 tests with the group as well. DE KK7PAY. 73s.
I let my liencense expire 10 years ago KC7HUO general class. I would like to get my credentials back Do I have to pass the Tech first then on to general or can I just paas the general??? And can I get my old call sigh back?? Thanks Erik
Actually, you only need to pass the tech exam and you will get your general back.
@houseofhamradio can I get my old call sign back??
That depends on if it has been issued to anyone else since you lost it. If not, you can request it. Not sure exactly how that works but Stephen might.
How many questions are on the Technicians Licensee, and how many to pass?
The tech exam has 35 questions and you must get 26 correct to pass.
@@houseofhamradio - Thanks
If you can switch your H 3 from Ham to GMRS why do they ( Amazon ) show a H 3 Ham model and a H 3 GMRS model? also the Ham model is a couple dollars less. Thank you in advance.
As far as. Know the hardware is identical and it is how it is configured and marketed.
I took my General with WM7X. Great experience, laid back atmosphere. It only took 20-30 minutes from registration to completing the exam. Highly recommend! 73, Jack
Congrats on your General!
My VE club team was so noisy it was hard to get to 100% ! Great guys but a bit chatty.
We always mute while applicant is taking test.
Excelent work. I would like to ask Stephen about HAREC exam if is available or will be available on the near future. As many US and Canadian ham need it, if they need a call for an HAREC country. Thanks and best Regards.
Thanks for the question. I had to look that one up. I had never heard of HAREC. What I did learn is that the US does not issue or recognize it. So I don't normally like to speak for Stephen but as far as I know, the team has no way to participate in that program.
Love this! This an excellent way to get young people involved. I have my Extra. Would love to have my daughter and son in law take advantage of this opportunity.
We have seen a lot of younger people coming into the hobby.
Great information. I am studying for my technician. All I have is IPad and IPhone looking forward to getting this done in the near future.
As Stephen mentioned in the interview, a lot of people no longer have a desktop PC. You are not alone there and will still be able to get your exam done and get your license. Best of luck.
Thanks again SO MUCH for calming me down last Saturday as you seen i was a basket of nerves. You guys are awesome! I already talked with someone from Maryland and the linked repeaters are great! I got my call sign yesterday morning at 5:22 am EDT. It's KD3ABM -Robert Manley. Kudos once again and i thank you so much. 73's and hope to catch ya's on air one day for a nice QSO. Have a great rest of your week.
Congrats on your license. Best of luck in your ham journey.
@ Thanks my friend. -KD3ABM
Will this online work for a past student of the old school working on my ticket back in éarly 1980s (.still had code!!) My "Elmer" went silent key and I lost ,y luster for the ticket Stayed in radio off on 30 more years @@houseofhamradio
how do you widen the frequency range displayed? and how do you actually zoom in a signal to make sure you tune it right? also does it have ZIN like in Yaesu or SPOT in elecraft to autotune the cw signal? I checked the manual but it doesnt say
I don't remember what you do to zoom in or out but it can be done. I don't recall it having a zero beat feature but again, I could be wrong. I only had my hands on it for a short while.
I am going to seriously consider taking my General test with these folks! I took my tech exam in person, and although I didn't hate the experience, it would be great to do this from the comfort of my own home.
Obviously, I have a bias for the WM7X team since I am an occasional VE with them but there are a lot of other teams out there as well. You need to choose the one that fits your schedule and needs. That being said, WM7X is good option if you choose to go with them and you likely won't regret it. Just ensure you have seen all the questions in the pool before attempting and you should do well. Good Luck!
Hi Stephen!! We miss you at coffee and donuts!
I'll pass that on to him.
I miss you all too! Even the doughnuts! Hugs!

I love this, I have a J in my call sign what would I use for the letter J because I did not see it? SO does that mean I have to switch from the liwc to the alphabet?
LICW has J it is in BC2.7.(I had to do a double take to see it) You could do alphabet as well. The order you learn in after your callsign is not as important as getting through them and being able to get on the air. You really need them all but LICW puts in order of most used characters.

I assume you are asking if I put them in myself or if they come pre-programmed in the radio. If that is the question, I had to put them in myself.
Are they required for radio

Looking forward to getting my call sign next week, then get my DMR and get on the air soon. Thanks again and 73's. I have been a GMRS operator a few years now and always wanted to step up my game. 73's -WRKH707 GMRS. call.
Great series of videos, Bob. Thanks!!
Thanks! I'm glad you found them useful.
Funny thing I seem to like the GD88 much better. The more info on screen is good but screen is small and can't see it anyways (for me). The updated firmware fixed a lot of other small things. I like to be able to use 2 time slots at same time and then also be able to use the radio for Sat work (work great there). The only thing I have to say is your hit on the head it the battery life really S^%ks, this makes me take 2 batteries with me. Programming seems to be same for me on both radios and that might be because I work as Communication officer with NXDN radios, so I am doing code plugs all the time. But good video and like to see more.
I think they have come a long way with the GD88. I no longer have it as I gave it to my son but they seem to be much more comparable than when I did the video. DMR radios in general are about the same to program and it really depends on the CPD software on what the experience is like. Thanks for sharing your comments.
got mine on allixpress for $15.00
3 quick questions 1. Can you keep your same call sign if you upgrade to xtra 2. Can you use a calculator or pencil/paper 3. Can you scroll to next question..if you want to go back at later time to think more about answer? Thanks
Yes you can keep your same callsign. In fact that is the default unless you elect to change it. The only calculator you may use is the calculator on your computer. You may also use scratch paper. You can scroll back and forth among the questions and even go back and change answers all the way up to submitting for grading.
Two years after this video was made, an update to the GD-88 has fixed the Dual to Single VFO issue (and almost every bug you listed). This changes the dynamic of your review significantly. It now means the benefit of having dual receive has been amplified by being able to switch to single receive mode if desired. The benefit of having cross band repeat is that when working events, exercises, or even actual disasters, you can act as a repeater. The value of this cannot be overstated. This is ALSO a benefit of single channel repeating. You can repeat using two time slots in one frequency. When everyone is using a DMR radio, you can be positioned to hit the repeater, and they can hit you… There is a third mode of repeat, cross MODE repeat. Everyone using analog radios can be mode switched to DMR through your handheld making them able to take advantage of DMR repeaters. Just because you can’t identify a purpose for a feature doesn’t make the feature valueless. You do a disservice to your viewers by pretending that because YOU can’t provide a reason for a feature, that makes the feature irrelevant. The Anytone and the GD-88 are two feature rich yet completely different radios. Given the cost of the AnyTone 878 plus v.s. the cost of the GD-88, I’d have to disagree with you emphatically and state the GD-88 is the better buy. (POINT four ounces, 100 mA of battery difference, and an extra low power mode that can be compensated for with a lower (no) gain antenna just don’t sell me…) HOWEVER, if your consideration is a requirement for Bluetooth, the Anytone is the only option between these two. But be prepared to pay for that option…
Thanks for the update. I no longer have the radio so cannot keep it more up to date.
Rig Expert is a good choice
Concure
I bought my first HF radio 40 years ago. Used my rig expert to build wire antennas.
This is a really good video but.... It's a bit too technical for anyone below a 20 year advanced grade ham licensee. I'd love to see you go deeper into real world examples and give a window for each parameter of what to be inside of. Yes you gave a best case scenario, but I'd like too see you go into "if your in between this and this your ok" or "don't go above or below this" or "see how it's a little off here, let's move it this way". Would be much appreciated if you went more into practical examples of all this using the rig expert, rather than be technical about it. Oh and don't show that damn smith chart lol that's just stupidly confusing. Another elephant in the room is where to take the readings from - 10 feet from the antenna, 20 feet from the antenna or in the shack at the radio end of the feed line. So many conflicting answers for this. All in all great video.
Thanks for the feedback.
I have both. I use the Pistar in the shack and take the open spot in my truck. I have zones associated with my two devices so I just have to change zones with I move from the shack to the truck. Thanks for the video! 73
Good approach for those that can afford both
Thank you thank you. I’m completely new to the hobby with no background at all. I’ve seen all these resources brought up on other videos on how to study for the test. But THIS! tells me how to use HamStudy in a way I can benefit from. I want to learn the material not just memorize a bunch of answers. Diving in thanks again.
Best of luck with your exam my friend. Make sure you have seen all the questions and are getting 80-90% or better on the practice exams and you should do well. 73 Bob
I am currently studying for my technician. I understand that the test gives questions in segment order, however, when it comes to each question, do they mix up the answers? For example, if the question pool has answer as (C), on test could it be in (A) position? Loving the Hamstudy app. Well worth the $3.
I would not count on or memorize the position of the answer choices. That is a real bad idea and recipe for disaster. Just memorize (or better yet understand) the correct answer.
@houseofhamradio thanks. I was just curious. I've been using the answer scramble option. As of right now, I have sections T1 to T7 memorized. I use the key word method in question and match it with key words in answer. Hamstudy does a great job providing these highlighted words. IMO, the most difficult section is T5 because it contains numbers and math. I've gotten them down pretty well.
I passed my Technician 2 weeks ago, went home and studied and received my General yesterday. I couldn't have done it without Hamstudy. Now the hardest part. Finding enough money to buy a hf radio 😆
@@Dawgs241 There is that. Unfortunately, HF radios don't come cheap. My advice, spend as much as you can afford using the buy once cry once approach. If that is only a little bit, then get what you can afford. The used market isn't a bad thing.
What is the full tx range on HF? Thanks
Don't quote me on this but I believe it is based by the regional band plan. I also think there are ways to tweak that but didn't dig into it while I had access to the radio. but covers 160-10 on HF and 6 and 2 meters on VHF.
