  • We finished our road trip in one of the most expensive cities in America. But we had already spent more than our budget for this trip. So we attempted to save money in San Francisco and only spent money on our top destinations. We only had 24 hours to see as much as we could, so we hustled most of the day.

Great use of the America the Beautiful pass at Muir Woods! Wonderful pro tip for people visiting national parks. The main trail at Muir Woods is frankly dull for people who see trees on the regular. Also, leaving the paved trail is prohibited. However, it is a great trail for older people who need a flat path, and despite the crowds, it is serene. The absence of visible-to-the-eye wildlife, reservation system, cost, and traffic into the valley has kept me away for many years.
Land's End Trail at Sutro Baths is an absolute winner and I agree with your score. Large parking lot with very rare free parking in the city. Again, for older people who want a paved stroll, the trail is wonderful. When I am showing the city to older family members, I take them there. The long stretch of Geary to get there from downtown is a side-tour of the city as well. For whatever reason, I shrug when I see the redwoods at Muir Woods, but when I see the evergreen fir trees at Land's End, with the pale trunks and high canopy, I pause in wonderment at the beauty.
Near Golden Gate Bridge, there is the Palace of Fine Arts. It is not a palace by any means, but it is a nice place to stop to take pictures. It is a perennial favorite for wedding photos. It is also a place where thieves prowl, unfortunately, even in the presence of police vehicles.

Thanks for all the info! The redwoods were so great for us. But it was at the end of a very hectic day so it was very peaceful compared to the city. Also it was our first time seeing them. But I totally understand your point about them just being trees. That’s my opinion on civil war battle fields. Growing up in Virginia, almost every school field trip was to a battle field. Oh wow another field, can we do something fun now? lol

The plaque in Muir woods says that FDR was the 31st president but Hoover was definitely the 31st. I wonder if its a typo?!

I also noticed that so I had to look it up. I think it’s because Grover Cleveland was the 22nd and 24th president.

Nice video but you basically drove from parking lot to parking lot and missed the very best of SF.

lol yea that’s pretty accurate. We only have one day to try and see as much as we could. So instead of thoroughly exploring a few stops, we tried to hit them all.
