    Well done. For Alcatrax, remember you'll need to book several weeks in advance during the high season, so do so before you get to the city. There are special tours with guides that take small groups of people to places most tourists don't see. After the prison, don't miss the gardens on the side facing the Golden Gate, they are really lovely and the views are amazing. You'll also need to book a time to visit and park at Muir Woods. Visiting Sausilito by catching a ferry from the ferry building is well worth it, especially if you don't visit Alcastraz. You'll get a chance to get out on the Bay and see both bridges and the city skyline. When you get to Sausalito, grab a sandwich and have lunch sitting near the sea lion statue along the shore. If the tide is really high, all you'll see is his nose! --- Now the bad and sad. If you drive into the city, head straight to your hotel and get your luggage out. Leave nothing in your car! Thieves come from across the Bay Area to break into your car! The infamous tent camps and open air drug dealing are mostly in the Tenderloin, which you should simply avoid. There's really nothing there to see anyway. Homelessness is more visible in SF because we are such a small place. Unlike more sprawling American cities there are simply not as many places for the homeless to hid out of site.

      We went last summer, which is apparently when things were "worse." We saw one weird homeless guy in a touristy area...we saw some shops boarded up in downtown...but that was it! It didn't feel any different to any other trip out there. We did only stay in the touristy areas, but I'm sure that's where you would be too.

    • @melbaker9495
      @melbaker9495 Год назад +2

      @@samrajnatarajan3259 There is no need to be scared. You aren't going to be going into the Tenderloin which is where all the videos you see are taken. You will encounter small groups of homeless and mentally ill people, but just ignore them and you'll be fine. You don't need and would be better off without a car in the city. Public Transit is decent. If you are traveling to the city by car unload at your hotel first. Leave nothing in your car. This is true in many other big cities, but gangs come in from the entire region to steal stuff from visitors. Realize these are opportunists, not interested in trying to mug you. In Europe you have to watch out for pick pockets, in SF you have to take everything out of your car. That said, enjoy visiting the various neighborhoods such as North Beach (North of Fisherman's Wharf) Chinatown next door and visit Golden Gate Park. So much to see and do there. With museums, gardens and even a Bison paddock! A great half day trip is to go to the Ferry Building at the foot of Market Street and catch a Ferry to Sausalito. Be sure to ride outside. You'll get to see the Bay Bridge, sail past Alcatraz and see the Golden Gate Bridge from the other side! In Sausalito go to the little deli on Bridgeway and get some sandwiches and have a picnic near the sea lion sculpture and take in the view. When you're ready hop back on the ferry or if you have the time and your family is up to it, rent a bicycle and ride back into SF across the bike path on the Golden Gate Bridge. Finally, even though September is warmer, the fog can still come in by afternoon, so always have a hoody in your backpack and save the shorts for So Cal!

    Just adding for folks who aren't familiar - these sights by the bridge are in the Presidio of San Francisco. It's a free national park site, with enough family-friendly activity to spend the whole day.

    Actually the Palace of Fine Arts was part of the 1915 Panama Pacific Exposition but at one point the whole thing had to be torn down to the metal under structure and rebuilt. The original was only designed to last for the duration of the fair (about a year). The rotunda and colonnades were constructed of a soft plaster-fiber material laid over wood framing. It lasted for quite a few years however it suffered a lot of decay so it was rebuilt out of stronger and more permanent materials.

      @@LifeOfReillyTV Could I ask for some advice please? My friend has asked me to prepare an itinerary for SF. We are there for 3 nights followed by 4 nights in Vegas.
      On Day 1 we won’t have much time for sightseeing as we land at 3.35pm. So I have just gone for a Chinese meal in Chinatown.
      Day 2 we are doing Alcatraz, Coit Tower, Fisherman’s Wharf and riding bikes across the GG Bridge.
      On Day 3 I wanted to see Twin Peaks, GG Park, Baker Beach and lunch in Restaurant in Sausalito before heading back to the city. What is the best way to get around on day 3? I thought about Uber to Twin Peaks and then walking to GG Park but it’s about a 3 mile walk. Then I thought Uber to Sausalito before taking ferry back to city. Do you have any thoughts on my plans or suggestions for getting around?

    • @LifeOfReillyTV
      @LifeOfReillyTV  Год назад +1

      Hi Lloyd, you’ve picked out all of the cool things to do, so well done! I reckon, the Bridge, Coit, Alcatraz and wharf are quite a lot to do in one day. You might want to separate the bridge from Alcatraz so you’re not rushing to make your booked slot, as they can both easily be half-day activities. If you’re wanting to do Sausalito, you could cycle over the bridge for lunch - and either cycle or get the ferry back.
      As for the park etc, catch a tram (not cable car) or a bus. They’re really cheap and safe. You can always Uber, if you like though.

      Good questions, Derby. I've just been through my phone to work it out. I think we got on our bikes around 10.30am and took my last photo on my phone, heading back down to the city back at the other side of the 2 hours later, so we probably got back 1pm. But, we also stopped to film some bits to camera a few times...and we had some young ones on bikes so we weren't super-fast. It probably took us 2h30 but you could do it faster or allow 3 hours to be safe? Also, we turned around right at the end of the bridge, we didn't go into Sausalito.

      Local here. I can’t deny that homelessness is indeed a problem for our city. You are almost guaranteed to see them at some point. But to be clear, it’s not as if they are present on every street or even every neighborhood. There are some blocks of SF that look terrible, yet others that are some of the most beautiful urban vistas in the country. SF has a grimy side but also gorgeous landscape and architecture, distinct and walkable neighborhoods (rare in the US), delicious food, iconic landmarks, and tolerant and open minded people. You also don’t have to stay in SF proper, nearby you can also visit Sausalito, Muir Woods, Napa (wine country), Silicon Valley, Monterey, and Santa Cruz.
      Know what neighborhood you’re going into, don’t flash pricy camera equipment or leave valuables in your car. Prepare to see a bit of zaniness if you stumble into the wrong area. Bring warm clothing and have a good time!

We stayed in the touristy areas though but did know there were a few more no-go areas than normal. It was definitely not the Walking Dead. You could argue that the city might’ve been worse when we went, during Covid, but reports aren’t great at the moment. From what friends and family have said, it’s not like it was 10 years ago but you can still visit the major landmarks safely. I hope that helps.

      Hi Tyler, we actually stayed with family in Oakland during this trip but we've stayed in Union Square before and there are loads of family friendly hotels/motels around Pier 39/Fisherman's Wharf, which is close to everything. I'd probably check with the TripAdvisor Forum to see where people have stayed recently.

    San Francisco is not safe at all...it's a nice video, but that place is a nightmare. And there is no "nice area"... refer to the recent murder of CashApp founder Bob Lee who was stabbed to death on the street in the "nice area". Mr. Lee had recently fled to Florida to get away from the decaying San Francisco and was only back in the bay to tie-up loose ends from the move...his children are now fatherless...wife left a single mother. It's not a one off, it's a pattern of crime that is relentless in San Francisco. In addition, if you make the mistake of driving a car there...they will bash out your windows and take anything they want. Good luck 🤷‍♂️...

      There are a few neighborhoods, just as in every city. The locations shown here are not on the short list. Most of the people I have seen complaining can no longer afford to live here as it *IS* expensive and can't be afforded unless you have a good salary. And housing is expensive as everyone wants to live here. Such is life.

      @Angel Jose Mendoza bayview mission 24th 16th tenderloin all these areas are dangerous. Idk why ppl lie saying this city is all rainbows. I grew up in this city but as someone who has travelled the world I haven’t seen ppl sell drugs shoot up heroin out in the open as casually anywhere else in the world

      Florida,@Angel Jose Mendoza? You added a conservative state to your otherwise reasonable list of cities? LOL. Can't fix stupid is right.

      We literally went there and didn’t see this post-apocalyptic world!! I’ve heard it’s in the Tenderloin but we chose not to go there.

    First place to go is the Tenderloin, get your drugs here , then down to fisherman's Warf , you can make money breaking into tourist rental cars ! then a night down over to china town to get some young stuff , wink wink !

      i would also add its a dumpster fire... its not a place for tourists at all. if you live in The City, youre effectively trapped by the high crime surrounding you

    This city is completely lawless be careful vacationing here. High crime for cellphone snatching and being held up at gunpoint.

      We really didn't experience that when we were in San Francisco. Every major city has pickpockets and crime. There are some definite no-go areas in SF but all the tourist areas felt safe.

      @@LifeOfReillyTV I was robbed in a tourist area and want all tourists to be aware because it isn't talked about and it looks nice. I never want anyone to endure what I endured. For a tourist who gets robbed, they will lose their form of support/communication/passport/way home.

    heres the best planning.. dont ever go there. seriously. its not a place for families, or just about anyone.. crime is high and so are all the people on the sidewalk.. i live just south of The City, havent been back in three years. its a dumpster fire of immense proportions.. anyone who subjects their family to staying there is doing themselves a disservice.
