It is a very compact city with lots of distinct ethnic neighborhoods. You are better off not renting a car while in the city. I wouldn't want to live there but I like living in a nearby city. I visit 3 or 4 times each year by train and then get around via public transportation and on foot.

I usually look for options on the booking.com website and adjust my budget range and check the reviews from past guests, we stayed at the Van Ness Inn the last time which was nothing special but very centric and cheap, we booked it very last minute so we didn't had many options.
