My biggest tip as someone who has lived here for about a year is to stay at either the Intercontinental or the Fairmont (depending on your price range). Depending on your family's vacation budget, Intercontinental is relatively inexpensive for a city hotel (around $100 a night) and Fairmont is the more luxury option (around $400-500 to start). Both are atop Nob Hill and have incredible views of the bay and great access to Chinatown, Fishermans Wharf, Russian Hill (where the famous crooked street is), and many other attractions tourists are looking for. A lot of hotels are downtown and while the Union Square area is generally fine, it's homogenous with other big cities like New York so I don't really see why anyone would come to San Francisco and want to hang out there. As far as homelessness, like Haley said, most of it is saturated in the Tenderloin so definitely avoid if you're not used to walking around big cities like New York and LA that have similar problems. For the most part, you will not encounter anything like this in areas away from Market Street/downtown. The greatest tip I can give to tourists who love architecture is to just walk through the residential areas. Places like Russian Hill, North Beach, Pac Heights all have architecture to drool over and it's such an amazing walking tour.

Often times, one can find affordable meals in “hole in the wall” local eateries in those areas.

You did a good job! I realize why you have to caveat the Tenderloin the way you did. I go through it on foot every day, worked in it for thirty years. I see the kaleidoscope of humanity in full effect (the heartbreaking and the soul-lifting both) and I know where to see it’s own brand of beauty…but outsiders usually aren’t used to the density and intensity of the issues in this neighborhood, so I just tell them to skip it.
We get tons of visitors who want to explore SF, and I usually send them on their Day One to the Ferry Building.
Some go from there to the Wharf on the F line. Some take a ferry. Sone catch the cable car on California and have a blast without waiting in the terribly long lines by Powell Street. Some just linger there and shop.
If my guests are up for it, though, a sure-fire winner of a day is to get from the Ferry Building to the Levi Strauss Park and then walk up the Filbert Steps. They all come back raving about the gardens, the views, the old architecture, the wild parrots…and they usually drop down the other side and go into North Beach and Chinatown. I tell them about the coffee, the Italian pastry shops, the alleys of Chinatown.
They usually cover them all. They get back home exhausted when the day is done but they are in rapture, with a book they bought at City Lights, and a bag of cannoli, focaccia or those fortune cookies from the tiny factory on Ross Alley.

As a fellow native of SF, all those things that visitors love to look at or do are things you start to take for granted. I use to work in Marin and had to drive across the Golden Gate Bridge everyday. Stuck in traffic and paying toll fees. Driving through the Presidio to try and avoid traffic which rarely worked. I also use to work at Pier 39 at a cookie shop during my high school days so that’s a place I haven’t been to in 15 years. I’ve never been to Alcatraz either.

The Chabot Space and Science center in Oakland is really neat. Tickets are like 20 bucks but they have free telescope viewings on Friday and Saturday nights!

From the Bronx New York but lived in SF for 7 years. And tbh with the most recent turn of events in my life I never expected to lose two of my best friends and become permanently disabled on new years Eve

What a great video, Haley!!!!! Not a touristy “hey visit here” video, but a very good video to not only help people enjoy their stay, but also to help them avoid ruining their vacation.
Now I can officially say it: Haley Dasovich-the San Francisco Treat💛💚💛💚🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭

Awesome! I’m thinking about going solo on my birthday in two weeks. I was afraid at first to travel so far and alone but I’m pretty sure I’m going to do it. Looking at a 9 hour tour now with a few companies. I know to stay away from Tenderloin and just heard of Lands Ending today and so want to see this!

@@listentolisa5611 Aw, good luck and have fun! I was afraid to travel solo my first time too but after my first time I truly fell in love with just being alone LOL! My first time was also in the city and it’s honestly amazing to go alone because if you get bored of one spot you just go to the next! If you get the chance you should go to Twin Peaks, such a lovely view of the whole city!!

Love the video! As someone from the Central Valley, living in SF has been a huge adjustment with moments of 👎🏼 … however … every place has its ups and downs and I’ve learned to focus on the ups, & now we never want to leave SF! Now if only a hefty down payment magically appeared in our bank account … 💸

Treasure Island has one of the best views of the city in general in my opinion, from the bay bridge to golden gate and everything in-between. An it's only like 8min ride on the bus from the city
