True. I'm currently renting in the Bay Area (non-tech person) and the market for housing is horrifying, especially taking into account the pandemic and the Napa wildfires which sent a lot of people packing from up north as well. Massive foreclosures will come very soon if not now. The people working out of San Jose are luckier though. You could literally buy a 4 bedroom home with a maintainable yard in Los Banos or Modesto for the price of a San Fran apartment.
@@mayamoments I do not disagree with the changes not being good in many ways. But I get tired of the endless bitching about how tech has ruined the place. Everything comes around. They are running for the hills now. They can work from home. SO the City will change back again. This City is resilient. There are many artists (Like myself) who have weathered the storm. Yes it is bad. Rents are a joke. I know so many that left the area because of eviction. But many have survived. The Mission has for the most part stayed the Mission. Unlike NYC here in SF we have been able to fight off a good portion of gentrification. I could go on and on about what is wrong, but choose to reach out to those needing education about the wonders of this place. If you understand the culture of this City you will respect it. It will change again and again... I still love it.
But I totally agree the poor are generally getting fucked by the cost of living going up that is a direct reflection of the Tech industry. I too dislike so many Tech workers, but they are just kids. They will change. They will learn, and many are wonderful people to start with. Nothing is so simple as we want to make it.

Thank you for making this video. I am a Bay Area native and have lived in San Francisco most of my life. I loved hearing your perspective as SF has changed a lot over the decades. I have experienced it through the my youth and now in my later years and what an amazing ride it has been. Despite its many thorns I still love living in San Francisco.
Lived in SF for 1 year (Nob Hill/Chinatown). Visited a few times before but moving there really takes the magic out of it. I ended up just being busy and stressed out in a city I was supposed to be at ease and enjoying. It’s just so expensive.. :(
This video really tugged at my heart strings, both of my parents are from the Bay Area and i used to go to SF multiple times per year when I was younger, so it was very nostalgic to see all these clips and hear you talk about some of my favorite neighborhoods :’) also as a design nerd, the font you chose for this video was fantastic lol
Amazingly accurate for today. I’ve lived in city since 1964. There’s so much negativity about San Francisco it’s good to see someone who appreciates it. I don’t think you stated the political scene in San Francisco strongly enough. Trump only got 12% of the vote. Just in case someone of his persuasion would ever think of moving here.
The most annoying thing about any city that isn't in California is the lack of parks. I moved from the bay to Nashville and we lack NICE parks and vista points. I don't even think people know what a vista point is in the south.
I'm so surprised to hear your opinion on lack of nightclubs! It definitely used to be a bigger scene a decade ago and SF clubs are way smaller than LA and Vegas clubs but I can name 10 poppin SF clubs off the top of my head
Yeah, San Francisco has a great bar scene (of course, the pandemic changes this) but I always found the Oakland dance club/night club scene to be a little better.
Thanks for the video @katherout. I'm a Bay Area native and I'm sorry to hear people are being nasty to you about your SF videos. From what I've seen of two of your videos (this one and the apartment hunting one), there's nothing to hate. I mean, there's having a difference of opinion or constructive feedback, and then there's just people throwing invectives because they can. I really liked this video. It matches the impressions I've had of SF over the years. The only two things I would add is a) SF is really popular spot for book lovers. There are more bookshops here per capita or square mile than any other city in the country I think. And b) the same goes for restaurants re: restaurants per capita (pre-COVID at least). I think most "foodies" actually do know that SF is a culinary powerhouse. The California Cuisine movement that redefined American fine dining was spearheaded by Alice Waters of Chez Panisse (Berkeley). Thomas Keller is often thought of as one of, if not the best chef in America and his most celebrated restaurant, The French Laundry, is in Sonoma County (simmer down you Per Se lovers 😉.) The many climates of the region plus its proximity to the Pacific Ocean mean that the state is a prime location for some of the freshest and most diverse set of ingredients one can find anywhere in the US. Add to that the large immigrant populations from China and Italy in the past, and East Asia, South Asia, and Latin America (specifically Mexican and Central American) in the present and it's no wonder this place is screaming with great food. And for those that like wine, of course there is Napa Valley. I don't know, I just see SF listed as a top culinary destination in the US a lot, so I'm surprised to hear there are people outside the area who are so unaware.
I feel like the only people that complain about SF weather are the people that don’t live in the mission! Honestly, it’s sunny in the mission about 300 days per year.
This was spot on . I moved from Dogpatch to Walnut Creek in early 2020 and even though WC is super nice I still miss living in SF so much. Even with all its problems, I think it’s one of the most beautiful places to be at and I’m hoping I get to move back again at some point. ❤️SF
same unfortunately there's a growing homeless issue, and lack of sanitation across San Francisco. I know tons of people who are/have moved and are going to move. Our local government has done a poor job in trying to fix these issues, and its seriously sad because it was such a beautiful city :(
Agree! I moved to Chicago to get away for three years - definitely more affordable. During the pandemic had to move back but it definitely not what it use to be. Hopefully that’ll will change as techies move out.
@@droneimagination9534 Yes it's been so hard to watch the democrats run this city into the ground. I used to be a Democrat, but after seeing what Newsome is doing as well to the state I'm done.
I feel like it's going in the direction of Detroit at this rate. A massive technological boom, and then a slow but sure move-out and foreclosure of homes after people realize the cons outweigh the pros. It's a nice vacation spot, sure, but it's not sustainable to live and breathe there with the pandemic and crime control. I currently live in Pacifica, but I'm looking to move out into Modesto or Los Banos considering it's about the same commute time to SJ, but from a dirt-cheap 4-bed house.
Impressed with how accurate and thorough you were. You described the city as I experienced it in college and I miss that rose-colored version on SF SO MUCH. I'm not a native, but I've lived and/or worked in San Francisco since 2005. I didn't expect you to get into this, but I work in the Tenderloin/SOMA neighborhood in public health and the other hallmarks of the city that come to my mind are homelessness, people of color being forced out of their neighborhoods (and the city altogether), and a rising OD death rate. Skimming over the most hard-hit, struggling neighborhoods (Tenderloin, SOMA, Bayview, Hunters Point to name a few) that tend to be where people of color reside, does give a prettier picture of SF than is accurate. Tech monoliths and gentrification have been outrageously damaging, but yeah, not that kind of video. Still these things are so, so important to know before moving to San Francisco!! Those points (and the hills 😅) seem to shock transplants the most.
@Ash Hegde I see Ash has arrived here to let everyone know what a brilliant critical thinker he is and how everyone else is blind to the truth he seeks to enlighten us to. It must be difficult for you, Ash, with so many sheeple and libtards to own. How do you find the time in your busy schedule
If covid wasn't a thing, I'd have moved to SF right now. This vid rlly helped put things into perspective (I feel like I just lived through a day in the city!) Please keep them coming!
I’ve lived in the city since 1991 (Bay Area since I was 2,) and I think you did an amazing job covering all of the bases. I especially appreciate how you addressed gentrification. And hey, I’ve been here since I was in my early 20s, and it’s really hard to make friends, it’s true. You did the city a solid :)
I'm from London, England. I fell in love when I visited SF at 15 y/o. Now 18, I am making it my life mission to move here after uni. I find so much inspiration as a writer in such a city.
SF is run down. Not a great place to live at all. A good place to pass through though once in a while, but if you’re a writer then you gotta have to embrace the crap (literally) as much as the glory-whatever’s left, that this city has to offer.
Me too!!! Too bad Esau's on a timeclock. So sad. Looks like we are under an indefinite lock down. Seems like the powers that be don't want life to resume as normal. Terrible!
I've lived in SF since 1990. There is a stubborn, pervasive culture that promotes a tolerance for criminal behavior. Every time I go to Walgreens someone is ransacking the place and no one is doing anything about it. And then there's the growing homelessness, traffic, feces and needles on the streets, high COL, etc. People should vote for what is good for this city and not ideology.
I have a friend in The Hudson Valley that tries to get me to send him those egg tarts. I thought I was gonna have a heart attack right there in Chinatown when I ate one, but hey you gotta love what you love.
Moved to SF for college just before the 89 earthquake. Lived in the Mission for 24 years before being evicted. Living in The Town now but still pop over to SF on weekends to meet friends. Have to admit, I was suspicious before I watched your video but it was honest and your humility, as a newcomer, won me over. I hope you’re able to stick around and learn more about The City. Cheers!
@Ash Hegde are you attempting to shame me for having been evicted? Being evicted is not something a renter “manages.” It happens to them when a landlord invokes the Ellis Act. Six people, from three units, in my building were evicted so that two people with a child could live there.
@Ash Hegde Well they didn’t convert to condos. Landlords loose that option when they resort to using the Ellis Act. Squatters don’t pay rent. And as I pointed out we were not evicted for cause. Ellis Act being a “no cause” eviction process This adult got a lawyer and a settlement. But you do you
@Ash Hegde No shame in my game. I no longer have a landlord. I bought a condo in Oakland, using my settlement money and some of my stock options. Also, it didn’t harm my credit rating, because it was a no-fault eviction (meaning we did nothing to justify being evicted) Good luck with your becoming an adult Ash. You can’t remain an edgelord forever. Until then, your definition of an adult holds no weight
That IS the ideal weekend and would be for me in Toronto as well. Making the move to the city mid-pandemic really has me romanticizing all the fun I could have been having if I had moved here sooner, but alas...

Excellent and really honest description of life in SF & it looks like you figured out the good way to live a day in the city! ;-) Happy New Year. If you did want anything extra to mention, it would be how - because SF is relatively small, Oakland/Berkeley are near, etc, it's so easy to be involved in a ton of different communities at the same time if that's your thing, e.g. yeah techies & startups sure, but also burners, DJs, artists, hippies, surfers, foodies, etc etc etc. Contrast that with living in LA where it's so big and takes so long to get from one end to another, you kind of just stay in your neighborhood most of the time. Love this about SF.
Honestly this is the best times to move to SF if cost of living is on top of your list. Rental prices has dropped more than 30% in SF since the pandemic drove so many of the techies to work from home, they do left. Never have I seen apartments on Zillow stay listed in the city for more than a few days, some have been listed for months ! There’s SO many studio and a few 1 br going for $1200-1700 in the city now in districts like Soma, Mission, South Beach etc which is AMAZING FOR SF lol .
Good time for renters who've wanted to live directly there. Horrible for first-time or retiring homeowners. I live on the coast in Pacifica and saw a run-down, sandbag-barricaded weathered away house driving down to Pacifica Municipal Pier a couple months ago and was hoping it was up for sale for a very reduced amount. I checked Zillow on my phone and it was an actual million dollars just to have the property. :(
Really great overview of the city. A couple of things I would add: Besides The Mission, Pac Heights and Polk Street, there is also Lower Haight (grungy with good music and the biggest arcade bar) and SOMA near the underpass for a more rowdy scene (Butter Bar, Audio Nightclub, Halcyon, Burgerac, Mighty, 1015 Folsom, Monarch, etc.). There's also a ton of Burning Man parties. Tons of dancing, MDMA, and good techno. Politically, I'd say SF is more openly leftist with an undercurrent of libertarian. Tons of libertarians, capitalists, and centrists who are actually shamed into not being able to speak up or who are usually not as loud as the leftists (online at least). Overall, your "left of center" is pretty spot on - just adding nuance to how it's been felt by me since living here. Lots of tension between tech and SF natives - a corollary of your statement about gentrification being a problem. My 2 favorite ramen places are actually not in Japan Town (although amazing ramen everywhere). My favorites are Mensho Tokyo (Lower Nob Hill), Nojo (Hayes Valley), and Ippudo (SOMA) in that order. Fourth and fifth favorites are in Japan town. So much good ramen.
I kid you NOT, I was just watching your SF Apartment Hunt video, for like the third time. San Francisco is my dream city, from SoCal, and like to watch apartment hunts for fun. *side note/funny coincidence, I’m acquaintances with Tamar
SF native, moved to the PNW for school and now work. Though you do work in tech, I think you had a great impartial view of the city from an outsiders perspective. I appreciated that you acknowledged your privileges and views regarding living in SF and addressed the mass destruction that gentrification and the tech industry has had on the character of the city.
I am a native SF and my favorite month is October--just gorgeous. Maybe September LOL I was a huge bus person and not wasting money on Lyfts as the Muni is pretty good most of the time. You should have bought a fast pass. I never, ever get tired of the architecture here, and neither do any of my friends. We are a foodie town. Famous celebrity chefs. We started it!!!
OMG, your overview of the personalities in the different neighborhoods is SPOT ON. This is really great overview of the city, especially the bakeries. They are fabulous. I appreciate you acknowledging your privilege. Good on you.
I’m moving to Daly City next week (near SF)... i am going to say that I’m excited and also nervous. New surroundings for me but more opportunities. I really don’t care about the weather or anything lol, I’m just glad I’m close to literally everything and there’s a lot of stuff to do! Because my current city is horrible and there’s nothing to do here unfortunately... so, I’m glad I’ll be out of that.
thank you for mentioning gentrification!! San Francisco is an incredible city and as I've visited over the years, I've seen it change dramatically (not necessarily in a good way) and it is definitely worth noting that a large part of the change is bc of tech and that industry
me stumbled across this gem while searching for anything info about SF before moving. I am so excited! I am not from US but I am going to SF for further studies. Hope they have jobs available for integrated marketing since I am working in that industry. Love your tips and break downs of SF too! Thank you for the info!
I'm so excited about living in SF! Planning to move there in 2026 to start a nursing job in one of those big hospitals. It's gonna be a huge change from my small-town life in North Carolina.
I love your editing style. We can't see you breath! Been here since 89' and hate how people think the City is ruined. It has changed, and many of the changes suck. However, people just can't get with new realities. I personally have huge issues with some of the changes, i.e. Google Glass types on Valencia 4 years ago or so. Yeah, and Delores Park is really weird now. I live in Noe and actually hate the crowd here. 24th street is not my favorite hang. We have a cheap place (rent control) in the midst of multi-million dollar homes. I have seen the rise and fall of the Tech scene multiple times. The current rendition is the coolest yet. You got it as for your daily City tour. I agree. Um, well I can't understand waiting in line for pancakes... Thanks so much. I love to see the perspective of younger... Tech types... I am old school, but can't bitch about much like I used to. I am actually way more upset by the haters of the changes than the creators.of those changes. Sorry I ramble. Loved your take on things...
Reading over my comment I seem like a complainer. I like your review, and I love the City in all of its renditions. Just may not love the same things as others.

Hello my dear, what a beautiful video. I used to live in San Francisco in the 90s for about five years. Right on Sacramento and Laguna across Lafayette Park and a beautiful stone building 2195. My rent at the time was $1000 for three bedrooms and two bathrooms. You have made me feel so homesick now, and I’ve been contemplating for many years to go back. But this time I would tend to Mendocino County. I will keep watching your videos. Wonderful.
For about 10 plus years I had the opportunity to visit sf at least 3 times a year- business and pleasure. The city took a nose dive about 6 or 7 years ago. I'm talking about walking thru urine and only afterwards realizing it was in fact urine, stepping over bums- had a friend get his jaw broken by a bum that he would not give money to. Trash, trash, trash- it was not created that way - it became that way. Having to tell my Wife to 'just keep walking- don't look' at a pervert down at Fisherman's Wharf --- Oakland - the homeless camps just kept getting bigger and bigger. The Marina District- I got to a point where I would not walk by myself- even in the morning (I understand families are hiring private security in that area now). I have not been back to sf for almost 2 years- not going back, I value my personal safety and my wonderful memories too much. I noticed your video did not cover the homeless problem. Almost forgot- riding in an uber - glanced over to city hall and watched a guy pee on the side of the building in the middle of the day- yeah that's an indication of a great place to live.
Heya! Great video! Very well structured! Since you're a person who needs those green spaces and parks, definitely go to Berlin once in your life. There are many parks in the city itself... BUT!... if you take the S-bahn to Potsdam (30 minutes), you'll witness some of the finest parks you'll ever seen in your life. I'm talking about HUGE parks all filled with breathtaking castles! There's a reason why Potsdam is one of Germany's most expensive cities to live in.
I’ve lived here 40 years and your video is quite accurate. You describe the scene from a young person‘s point of view but there’s also tremendous interests for older people. Lots of private clubs for very wealthy people who come up from Woodside and Menlo Park and down from Marin County if they don’t already live here. Old money in other words.
As a Mexican American… nothing annoys me more than caucasian people calling us latinx in some attempt to be woke… when in reality, it’s really offensive! It’s our culture. It’s our language. Quit trying to change it. If it makes you so uncomfortable just say Latin American or even Hispanic. If a non-gender Latin American wants to call themselves latinx… then whatever floats their boat. They can add the word on their own behalf but for our whole community and culture to have its name changed… no.
this is so helpful thank you you !! everyone else made a get ready with me and called it a day in the life lol, i love that you provided so many facts about the city etc
The reason they have so many parks is because of the recreational rule the county pushed so every building had to have some sort of recreational area open to the public
I'm homesick for the architecture, nature, and sense of wonder, but I also enjoy renting a studio apt for $1300 and being able to freely look at my phone in public, without fear that someone is going to snatch it out of my hand. I still have the habit of looking down constantly to avoid poop. I've been gone for 5 years. There's not poop.
every city has homeless and drug problems. Rural communities everywhere have opioid epidemic. I don't believe everything faux propaganda says. I've lived in the San Francisco 30 years and while there are homeless most not from San Francisco or California that is the case everywhere. We have a booming tech economy that has increased costs especially housing but at least you options outside of Walmart the largest employer in most red states.
Really enjoy the video! Moved to SF 6-7 months ago for work after college, and work from home mostly. I find it incredibly hard to meet new people in the city with the COVID lock down and no previous connections in the city, it’s been tough few months for me. Any tips on meeting people or making new friends during this time in SF? A video on this topic might be really helpful for not only me and many other people struggling.
I give you high marks for your overview of SF. I'm a native, quite a bit older than you. Regarding the size of the city: SF is "squarish," in shape, and roughly SEVEN MILES SQUARE ... apx. 7 miles X 7 miles. That makes it roughly 49 SQUARE-MILES. 7 squared = 49. Happy to see that you seem to enjoying living here.
I have been to San Fran three times, once for one day , another time for one night weekend stay. I loved being at the wharf area with all the food, sight seeing, doing the ferry trip tour to alcatraz and seeing the big bridge 🌉. I really loved going to the Ghirardelli chocolate factory with really good ice cream and goodies ( yes in a sweet toothed, lol). I had to say the center of the city made me uncomfortable though. I rarely ever visited metropolis areas , so once I rode with my friend though the center part of the city in the late afternoon and it was pretty dark where we were at. That freaked me out.
My favorite place to spend the day is the Botanical Garden. There are also lots of good restaurants nearby in the Inner Sunset. I don't care much for Dolores Park or the Mission. I prefer Golden Gate Park, the Sunset & Richmond, and the Haight (where I live).

Amazingly accurate for today. I’ve lived in city since 1964. There’s so much negativity about San Francisco it’s good to see someone who appreciates it. I don’t think you stated the political scene in San Francisco strongly enough. Trump only got 12% of the vote. Just in case someone of his persuasion would ever think of moving here.
sadly most of those 2% have more zeroes in their net worth than fingers and they financed him.
I always thought San Francisco would become this super progressive like Bernie Sanders type but they still vote for Nancy Pelosi
Do people actually care about politics when moving somewhere

To me politics = Taxes with cities.....so yes
699 overdose deaths in SF to 235 covid deaths.
You did a really good job giving an accurate unbiased description of SF. The city is not for everyone, but it's intriguing to everyone.

Nightclubs - what, nightclubs - you see all this crap going on around you and your thought goes to 'nightclubs'. YOU are the problem that SF has.
What's the mission? I'm planning to move to SF
This was spot on . I moved from Dogpatch to Walnut Creek in early 2020 and even though WC is super nice I still miss living in SF so much. Even with all its problems, I think it’s one of the most beautiful places to be at and I’m hoping I get to move back again at some point. ❤️SF
Grew up in San Francisco but had to leave. The city is turning to crap recently, literally, it's everywhere.
same unfortunately there's a growing homeless issue, and lack of sanitation across San Francisco.
Same :(
Impressed with how accurate and thorough you were.
My Goodness I love you, your response is 1000% accurate...I love this conversation, hope we keep it going 💖

Visited SF and London in the same year. London is million times better and I am a born and raised Californian.
SF is run down. Not a great place to live at all. A good place to pass through though once in a while, but if you’re a writer then you gotta have to embrace the crap (literally) as much as the glory-whatever’s left, that this city has to offer.

Ellis Act being a “no cause” eviction process
This adult got a lawyer and a settlement. But you do you
@Ash Hegde No shame in my game. I no longer have a landlord. I bought a condo in Oakland, using my settlement money and some of my stock options. Also, it didn’t harm my credit rating, because it was a no-fault eviction (meaning we did nothing to justify being evicted)
Good luck with your becoming an adult Ash.

This makes me actually feel like going to SF to work, to live, or simply to visit thanks Kathy!
Do your research.
A couple of things I would add:
Besides The Mission, Pac Heights and Polk Street, there is also Lower Haight (grungy with good music and the biggest arcade bar) and SOMA near the underpass for a more rowdy scene (Butter Bar, Audio Nightclub, Halcyon, Burgerac, Mighty, 1015 Folsom, Monarch, etc.).
Still living in SF and you reminded me of everything I love about the city! (:

SF native, moved to the PNW for school and now work. Though you do work in tech, I think you had a great impartial view of the city from an outsiders perspective. I appreciated that you acknowledged your privileges and views regarding living in SF and addressed the mass destruction that gentrification and the tech industry has had on the character of the city.
Yes, so important to acknowledge one's privilege. It is the beginning of understanding others.
I lived in San Francisco back in the early 2010’s. I always have nostalgia for that time, but it really has changed so much since then.
I am a native SF and my favorite month is October--just gorgeous. Maybe September LOL I was a huge bus person and not wasting money on Lyfts as the Muni is pretty good most of the time. thank you for mentioning gentrification!! San Francisco is an incredible city and as I've visited over the years, I've seen it change dramatically (not necessarily in a good way) and it is definitely worth noting that a large part of the change is bc of tech and that industry

Having to tell my Wife to 'just keep walking- don't look' at a pervert down at Fisherman's Wharf ---
Oakland - the homeless camps just kept getting bigger and bigger.
I moved to Dublin (about 40 miles East of SF) about 6 months ago. Looking forward to exploring the area more when the pandemic is (hopefully) over
Hopefully…
As a Mexican American… nothing annoys me more than caucasian people calling us latinx in some attempt to be woke… when in reality, it’s really offensive! It’s our culture. It’s our language. Quit trying to change it. If it makes you so uncomfortable just say Latin American or even Hispanic. If a non-gender Latin American wants to call themselves latinx… then whatever floats their boat. They can add the word on their own behalf but for our whole community and culture to have its name changed… no.
SF is my favourite foodie city! Have you been to Miette or the Slanted Door in the ferry building?
this is so helpful thank you you !! everyone else made a get ready with me and called it a day in the life lol, i love that you provided so many facts about the city etc
I'm considering a job in SF but haven't been able to explore because of COVID... this helps give me a good idea of the city, thank you!!
SF is really beautiful and expensive. Of course a homeless crisis everywhere too
And unfortunately it seems like nothing is being done about it
No mention about the homelessness or drug problem ?
Well it does appear that she is not homeless and may not have a drug problem.
@@seenaroundboston2302 LOL!!!!!!!!
If you lived in sf you would know that has no affect on almost everyones lives because most people are not homeless nor drug addicts
every city has homeless and drug problems.

So. We made a drinking game for every time she said “SF” instead of “San Francisco”, and we are literally dying.
