I chip much better than other golfers my handicap. I feel like you need to be able to chip both ways depending on the shot and the lie. Chipping requires feel and creativity. If you pick just one approach, you might be limiting yourself. I’ll put the ball back and use more shaft lean on a ball I want to run out more. You have to focus on hitting the ball first so you don’t fat it, but with the ball back, that’s pretty easy. Another way to avoid digging in is to slightly rock back a hair as you contact the ball. That helps you to present less edge to the ground. To be a good chipper, you need to get good and hitting the same spot every time. Regardless of your technique. Clay from top speed golf teaches a drill where you put down a small pile of sand and see how many times you can hit just the top few grains until it’s all gone. Repeatability takes practice.
I am pretty good chipper of the ball. I subscribe to Phil Mickleson school of thought ... ball is never in the middle of the stance ... its either by the back foot or front foot, weight front loaded, and then hinge & hold. I feel that produces way better results for me than the style of chipping you employ (and most of my friends do). I tend to blade or chunk the ball using the method you described. Given that I will get up and down 70-80% of the time, I feel Phil's method works best for me. PS: I am not left handed :)
www.pgatour.com/stats/stat.130.html 70-80% is pretty good going given Webb Simpson currently leads scrambling stats for pga tour at 69%. Appreciate they’ll have much harder course set up but I think you may be overestimating your success.
@@paulcox4804 That is a fair point. Both about the set-up and my own estimation of stats. I keep rather rudimentary stats. Fairway hit, GIR, Putts per hole and Up-Downs that do include bunkers. My up-and-down percentage is roughly in that range typically.
@@paulcox4804 actually you’re probably right. I just checked my GHIN. Here is the stat summary: Current HCP Index: 1.6 In last 12 months: 75% par or better. 23% Bogeys, and 2% Bogey+ Putts per round: 28 GIR: 43% Fairways Hit: 74% So if I try to correlate missed GIR (57%) to 25% bogey or higher score with # of putts, it doesn’t support my rudimentary stat of 70% or so up and down. The stat I’m truly don’t know how to correlate is putts per hole (1.5 approximately) in this equation of up and down as GHIN doesn’t track that.
Also watch “Kevin Kisner Fixes weekend golfer’s chipping game” I’ve been a hands person so hit and miss but since watching Kevin kisner its a lot better on my bad shots
My chipping has been very inconstant until this year, I used to try to punch the ball and dig behind because I didn't have good speed control so was fearful of sending the ball past the greens, but I would either fat it and the ball would only move a foot or I was still sending rolling across and over the green. My chipping now has been improving and I have been getting much more consistent with my shots within 25 yards of the greens. I have been practicing within this distance quite a bit in the back yard but that's about all I can get for distance before hitting the course or range. I have been practicing my pacing and bouncing the club thanks to your and others videos. Thanks for all the great content!
I started shanking my chip last year out of the blue... Now trying to be a little more vertical/on the toe and it's working decent. Very detailed video. Love it.
Thanks Mark. I came across this video at a real low point in my short game. Immediately that I put your technique into action I saw a big step improvement. This works.
Best chipping video I’ve watched. It’s my Achilles heel and I’ve worked so hard at it, but a lot of this is new content to me. I’ll let you know how it goes.
Have struggled recently, changed to a wedge with more bounce so the trend has improved markedly almost overnight. Now to practice more and make it a strength again and stop putting so much pressure on the rest of my game 😎
Chipping has improved since playing some hickory golf - the mashie niblick forced me to focus on quality of strike as well as be more creative with how I varied the face angle. The effect has been to open up a lot more options with my newer clubs
Fantastic instruction. Chipping is the worst part of my game now and I work on it constantly. Terrible to lose confidence in what was once a strength. Chipping yips may be worse than the putting yips. One of the best tips I heard recently was from Nick Faldo and Dottie Pepper discussing Viktor Hovland’s chipping woes. They said it is very difficult to consistently chip well with a square club face, which is what I always did. Instead, allow the face to rotate open and feel as if the heel is leading the toe on the downswing. This, of course, introduces the bounce of the club more like Mark has instructed. Works great out of the bunker too.
Fantastic video Mark. My short game changed after I read Stan Utleys book and watched James Ridyards videos. What you are teaching sounds so similar now. Used to struggle with short game coming out of winter now it's the only given I have. Can practice this technique in my living room on the carpet at home now.
Happy right now with short game, 56, 52 and PW as tools from Vokey and Ping. But these is always learning to do and a few new toys may make it even better. Plus your excellent guidance Mr Crossfield of course !
Such a helpful video for everybody. I personally have been chipping since more than a year almost exactly like you and my HCPI went significantly down to 3.6. But I pretty often let the shaft stand up to really avoid interaction with the leading edge. I do really recon this chipping technique! Great video!
I tried out these techniques today. I usually use a putting stroke with arms stiff. I tried the shallow approach today and I chipped in a birdie and another was about 4 inches. I like the soft feeling I get with just bruising the ground. Thanks!
As always you have simplified things for me, I used to have a pretty decent short game but recently it's gone off the boil, absolutely going to put this into practice in the next round. Love your videos, so easy to watch and always entertaining.
Some days I am brilliant at chipping other days rubbish. I tend not to hit greens in regulation so chipping is key to my game. I could do with a set of wedges. Mine are 8 to 10 years old. Great instruction as always.
Had a dedicated coaching session on this and it’s transformed my confidence. I’m often not GIR but having confidence with these types of chip shots means I feel confident getting it close to the pin and give myself a chance to still get a par
Just had hip replacement surgery so time on my hands; saw the article in TG so subscribed. I have been struggling with my short game and one of the greenskeepers had shown me this technique last year but I never really got to grips with it. Now I have something to really help me improve. As I play at a links course the contact on the ball is so important of really tight lies. I should be playing again in about 8 weeks and will report back.
I have improved recently by simplifying my chipping, much like you described in this video. I have also softened my grip/hands which helps keep me relaxed on the downswing.
I have been working on my chipping technique for some time using the same methods you describe which have improved my results but I hit a wall and could not make the final step to get where I wanted to be. I have now invested in a set of Cleveland CBX2 wedge and these have been a real game changer, I would recommend these to all “mid-handicap” players, they almost feel like cheating!
Much better this season. I practiced all winter long chipping down my hallway lol. Working on technique but also feeling how to change trajectory, put a little cut or draw spin on the ball, increase or decrease spin. It’s been a total game changer for me this year, I am much more consistent and confident around the greens especially now that I can finally get outside and practice different lies
Great tips there, they have helped enormously. I have often tended to be a bit of the yips with those shots, especially if I have a decent card going. Using the bounce hasn’t cured me but, has lessened the anxiety and enabled me to get lots more close to the hole for a one putt…thanks👍
Always trying to get better with spin with the wedges. Lots of bump and run with the 7i which is my go to. Saves me more strokes than putting most times!
My chipping has always been dodgy, was awful last 8-10 months though, had a few lessons lately, the confidence is starting to build now, chipped in from off green twice for birdie in last few rounds.
Chipping is getting good making a lot more up and downs, taking the pressure off putting. Really enjoy all your instructional videos, always filled with a fresh look at each situation, Keep it up.
Thanks Mark, great advice as usual. I am a fair chipper - tend to dig too much so going to work on your points and use the bounce more. I find key thought with this technique is to keep clubhead low so don’t dig.
I've only been playing 8 weeks so no real surprise that my basic chipping isn't good; exception being use of 7 iron around the green. I'll try and put your chipping advice to use and hopefully my basic skills around the green will show some improvement. Love the content on your channel.
This is video is elite. I fully endorse this modern idea of neutral shaft angle/use the bounce that Mark talks about in the first 1/4. I used to do the weird stances & forward shaft lean things and good lord, why?! I like toe down & more upright too for height.
I went to a 10 finger grip last year and found my strike and distance control improve significantly. Practise equates to confidence equates to a better short game people’s!
Streaky, but last 2 rounds I tried your method exclusively and I am getting great results! I have tried this method before and didn't get it. I think after all these years of watching you, this is the gest lesson you've given me. Thx
I’m probably one of the old school feet close together, turned toward the hole and stabby shot guy. This looks more like the regular shot we make so makes so much more sense. Gotta give them a go. I’ve taken my 60deg out of the bag cause I thought I shouldn’t use it and wasn’t good enough to use it. I’m going to have to dust it off and get it back in play. Thanks Mark.
I use the same technique for pitch shots. When I chip, I still use the forward shaft lean, but open my stance more to use the bounce as well. Short game was a huge weakness so I practiced this all winter, and I ambsolutky love the technique. No more chunks, and have been super consistent.
Nice vid. It is interesting and frustrating that for years I used the steep, high lofted technique to great effect, but as soon as I started trying to shallow (fix) my other golf shots (so I didn't have to chip so often) my chipping started to have higher variation. Matching up attack angle for the big and small shots resulted in a return to a tighter variation. I also like to simplify the type of shot by deciding the simplest landing area and then working out the amount of run out that is to decide the club to use.
I love chipping around the green, favorite part of the game
Me 2
Me too. Get lots of practice, because I can't hit a green to save my life!

Good when my driving is bad and bad when it’s good.
I'm in this comment and I don't like it.

Your video on chipping are life changing. After fatherhood I had the exact same chipping issues as you did. Thanks for the solutions.

Realy love that you are making more instructional videos again Mark, love the channel
Usually good. A little streaky: you, Locks and Lee Trevino getting the credit!
We're here 4 it!
This changed my life. I’ve been suffering with hinge and hold for years. No longer! This really works folks. Thank you Marc Crossfield!
The only thing consistent about my chipping is how inconsistent it is😂
Thank you Mark!! I have struggled with how to chip forever and this way has changed my game! Can't thank you enough.

Getting better. Have moved away from handle forward to more middle stance, leaving left leg open to turn through. Great video.
