    My Story:
    I was lost before and even during University, trying to get into the 3D Animation Industry without any luck or any guidance. I didn't even know the questions I needed to ask. My University misinformed me about learning 3D in my program, and I felt like there was no hope. 2 years later, I was working on the most popular kids tv-show world wide. (hey I gotta get your attention somehow)
    I'll dissect the process of my Journey for you guys, and teach you what cost me tens of thousands of dollars to learn. Tag along, I'd love to have you here!
    Thanks for watching and Happy Animating!

    This video is still fantastic over a year later. I do have a question though. Is there a reason you went this route instead of using Blend Shapes? I don't know how to do either, but I'm wanting to figure out if you can utilize blend shapes in this work flow.

    • @BrianKouhi
      @BrianKouhi  3 года назад +1

      Glad you enjoyed the video Dustin. to answer your question.. both are viable.. except this one wins it over for me, specially because the more Blend shapes you add the slower your file will get, on top of that, if you have a similar rig you can use the pose you saved here, and it should work fine. This is also sharable, so if you make nice poses for a rig you'd like to share with others, you can do that.

      Yes.. if you rigged it right it shouldn't matter. You're setting keys on controllers, so it shouldn't matter what character you're using.

    Thanks for the videos. Looks awesome. What do you think about using a facial mocap app and facs blendshapes for a first pass at lipsync and facial animation then add hand key to improve and finnesse it more? Ive been working at getting the facecap animation using iphone app to be good for more than a year now and getting very decent results. Have you tried facecap or faceware or other facial mocap solutions?

    • @BrianKouhi
      @BrianKouhi  4 года назад

      I haven't, but that could definitely be an option for more realistic animations. Though It sounds like it would take a lot more time than save it. do you have any examples uploaded anywhere?

    • @freenomon2466
      @freenomon2466 4 года назад +1

      3D Animation Hub, heres one test I did couple of days ago. This is raw from the facial mocap data applied to my custom blendshapes. No hand key added yet. So this only takes a few minutes to capture and retarget.

      3D Animation Hub, thanks. Ive been on for a while. Ive tried hand keying facial animation.. (even using studio library for facial poses and visimes), although its fun.. if I have to keyframe 3000 frames.. its a lot of work. So insfead I have a system where I can apply facial mocap to any of my custom characters in a few minutes just using an iphone I just have to add some tweaks by hand. Like F V B M etc and some tongue (tongues are tracked too). If you have a particular character that you want made facial mocap ready I can help you set that up so that you can give it a try

    That was super informative! You don't see this stuff on YT regularly. I have a quick question though. Do I have to have phonemes for each and every expression? Like do I have to have a set of Happy "F, AO,B...etc" shapes, and another separate Neutral "F, AO,B..etc" shapes? or can I make them all neutral and blend the expressions seamlessly with them?

    • @BrianKouhi
      @BrianKouhi  2 года назад

      Thank you, I'm glad you're enjoying the content. Work life balance is pretty bad since it's deadline based work. You'd have to have a certain attitude and force the life part over work. It's very easy to let work take over when you have people waiting for your work, so they can start their work. Made a video about this a few months back actually (the dark Truth about being an Animator) I think is the title. That being said, my current workplace (mobile game company) is great!

    You can use Auto tangents also to get the "snappy" transitions between poses. You just need to insert a few breakdowns. I don't like your Linear way of working here... But still nice effort!

    • @BrianKouhi
      @BrianKouhi  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks for the comment Igor, You can definitely achieve the same snappy style with Auto Tangent! but as you mentioned yourself, you have to add a bit more inbetweens. Which is fine! unless you're in a TV production with crazy quota and have to save time in every corner you can haha

    Great tutorial man! There’s a lot in-depth details. I have a question for you though. There’s one thing confused me while you are going through animating the mouth shapes.
    I’ll get an animation test for the job in TV. You suggest us to put mouth shapes in linear for TV specifically I wonder why ? for the blocking pass ? I didn’t understand that part. Would you mind explaining it to me man
    Another question is how’d we master eyebrow animations to get that film quality level they go references this that
    In reality our eyebrows bang, tend to move slow and not every time but everything works accordingly together so is there any tips&tricks to master it ? Other than practice and trial &error ?
    Last Q is I don’t know much secondary controllers for cheek and so on in what cases they should be squeezed or stretched out, and in what cases they move opposite from the other parts
    Thank you in advance I’d greatly appreciate it if you could answer my unanswered questions puzzling in my mind

    • @BrianKouhi
      @BrianKouhi  4 года назад +1

      Hey Dennis, thanks for your questions. The Linear thing is because in TV usually the animation is alot more "POPPY" pose to pose, fast pace.. So all through out the different productions, the Supervisors have all been looking for fast and poppy mouth shapes. I leave my mouthshapes on Linear for kids tv shows, even after splining the body. And regarding your other questions, it's a lot to answer in a post, so I'll think about making a video on a deeper level lip-sync video, or even an Eyebrow one.

  • @BrianLife
    @BrianLife Год назад

    Its great, the part where you say You Tube takes a liking to shorter videos, ok but, why does that matter, meaning if you're trying to Help and teach something. Why not do it for those learning, not for the algorithm or what you RUclips likes?

    • @BrianKouhi
      @BrianKouhi  Год назад

      Well the issue is, longer videos perform awful because less people click on them, and less people take the time commitment to actually watch the whole or even half the video. Making videos isn't easy, as I'm sure you know.
      And so if I'm spending 10-15 hours of my time creating a video, I rather have the highest level of impact on the most amount of people, rather than have 50 people click on the video and most of them not even watch half of it. Hope that clears things up.
